I read a few reviews just before heading out on our trip and frankly was a bit nervous after reading them. Altough the area did have its fair share of homeless people, it is downtown SF afterall! They were perfectly harmless and we never felt threatened when walking with 3 children to Union Square in the evening. The hotel itself was completely charming with its 60's vintage atmosphere and decor. It was light, bright, clean, and extremely well maintained. It was SO cute! Even though it was December the rooftop pool was well heated and inviting, the workout facility had new equipment (with TV's on the treadmill and bike), and the courtyards were beautiful with water features, seating all around, etc. There was even a game room with board games, and fireplace for families to have game night! We also took advantage of the cute lounge for happy hour. I dare anyone to beat this hotel for anywhere near the price! It was a steal! I would definiltely go there again in a heartbeat... any I am not easy to please... trust me.

The room was nice and clean. My bathroom was remodeled so I didn't run into the same problems some people had regarding their run-down bathrooms. The people at the front desk were very accommodating. The only thing that was odd was that our key kept not working (demagnetized?). I'm not sure but that was kind of annoying. Lastly, it was like a party there at the hotel. Definitely not recommended for families.

The hotel has an old modern contemporary feel. The beds were comfy. The room was clean and had a flat screen tv. There is internet access in the lobby as well as an attached cafe. The staff was very helpful and friendly. It was a great price for this type of hotel! The location: it is 2-3 blocks from the civic center Bart station, which is a plus if you are coming from the airport and want to take public transportation. My only hesitation is the neighborhood where this hotel is located in. It's in SOMA - south of market and there are some seedy areas that you have to walk through (or a good handful of homeless). We didn't walk around here at night (short stay) and felt safer walking back to the hotel in a group. It is pretty close to union square and the metreon, which is good.

The hotel itself is fine for the price. I'd be willing to give it another try. The people were nice and tried to accommodate, but seemed unaware of the noisy nature of the second floor. The location of my room (second floor - off the water-feature patio) was very loud when people walked right by the door or laundry carts rolled across the tile making a horrifically loud noise. I just wanted to sleep. And it was impossible. But, having said that, if I'd been given a quiet room, as I requested (3rd floor or off the other 2nd floor inner patio), I'm sure my stay would have felt a lot different. The hotel staff knew that I needed to sleep during the afternoon, so I wonder why they didn't put me in a quieter room. Maybe they don't know the carts make so much noise or that the street noise travels up to the second floor. Maybe this is the first they've heard of it. Hope it will be better next time. I didn't try the hotel food, but enjoyed a cafe down the street and a restaurant within a short walk. Be sure not to go to 6th street - a bit seedy and many street people. Not an area to take children.

This hotel is cute and refurbished on the surface, as the photos indicate. Certain things like the windows are old and barely work. The rooms have no air conditioning but since I went at the beginning of October, this was okay because they did have a ceiling fan. In the summer I can only imagine the heat would quite difficult to deal with. The on-site restaurant was hardly open, over priced, and the food nothing special. Overall the staff was friendly and considerate, although I did have trouble getting an extra washcloth from housekeeping. The location is fairly convenient to Market street ad public transport, but the neighborhood has a lot of homeless people and vagrants. They never bothered us, but if I had had children with me I might have thought twice about walking around. I probably would not stay their again but only because there are so many other hotels in San Francisco to choose from that are in better neighborhoods, even closer to public transport, an that have air conditioning.

We did have to pay for parking...although it wasn't nearly as expensive to park here as it was to park down by Fisherman's Wharf. I didn't care for the location of the hotel. It was not nearby any attractions. I walked around for 2 hours and didn't get near anything. The two restaurants they have nearby that deliver food are not good at all. We paid way too much at the Custom Burger for breakfast that was awful, and the pizza from Good Pizza was the worst I've ever eaten. So I do not suggest eating at the facilities they recommend.

The furnishings were great quality, not cheap retro pieces, and they were well coordinated in theme and color. It addeda fun flair to our trip. Not a boring, drap room at all. The location, like all of SF, has homeless people sleeping around. Though they sem creepy, they were inoccuous, never approached us, and didn't inhibit our walking around for late night meals around the hotel. Two sugestions: Mel's Diner on Mission, and ask for a break on parking. We asked and the guy at the desk who checked us in, gladly cut the parking price in half. We'd stay there again.

There were only a few things that I didn't like but it wouldn't stop me from staying there again. 1) the noise barrier could have been better. By 8 or 9 am there was constant rolling of bins, you could hear footsteps upstairs, and in the courtyard you could hear plates and silverware clanking. 2) the bed was supposed to be queen size but it was definitely more like a full. 3) There was no full length mirror. The area lets the hotel down which is a shame, because the hotel itself is good. Union Square or Fishermans Wharf hotels are in better areas.
