we came to this hoste for a cheap stay in new york, we planned to be out and about so we wouldnt be at the hostel much. it was shabby, being painted, the corridors were narrow so was hard to keep away from the paint. our room wasnt numbered so we had to guess what door to open when we arrived. we came back on our second night to find our room had flooded, ruining my girlfriends suit case and some of her clothes. we moved to the albert hotel two blocks away and the the rooms actually had furniture in, not just a battered old bed, and they also had blindes, this was a real treat compared to the last hostel, and it was cheaper.

Anything that you want done must be asked for or you have to do it yourself. Want towels? Go down 4 floors to get them. Want your bed made or new sheets? Go down 4 floors and tell them, or do it yourself. Remember that the shower/bathroom is shared with other guests as well as your room so you have to wait in line if you need to use the bathroom. There are plenty of places to eat near by on Broadway and the redline subway is only a block away.

I stayed at both single rooms and dorm rooms at this place. The dorm rooms either smell like cigaretes or greasy food. When I stayed at the single room for a couple nights, a very rude staff member tried to kick me out as if I were an intruder even though a very kind staff member told me I could stay in that room for two nights. The only good thing about this place is cheap rate. Don't expect anything else.

'Hotel rooms' are dirty and noisy, military style room, you can feel the springs of the mattress of the twin bunk beds. I am sure they never wash the carpet, the sheets had holes and were suspicious (hairs on the pillow). The Bathroom in the corridor was not cleaned in two days, the trash was not emptied. The friendliness of the guy at the front desk made you want to run away, it's a really expensive place for the service you get. We stayed there 2 nights (satruday and sunday nights).

Maybe it's cleaned just once each day. It should be more than that since they are shared and it tends to get dirty very fast. Bedding doesnt look clean, really worn out and white pillow covers and sheets are turning yellowish.

The hotel staff were polite and friendly, but the building was old and seemed poorly maintained. I found my bed to be somewhat lumpy and wondered how often bathrooms and hallways were cleaned. Overall, however, I was outside enjoying New York and attending a conference, so the hotel served its purpose: i.e., giving me a safe place to sleep at night. But don't expect great comfort. The room was bare: no desk, no chair, only a bed, bedside lamps, and a TV that didn't work. Nevertheless, I'd stay at this place again if I couldn't find a cheaper place. It is close to the subway (line 1, 103rd st) and only a short walk to Central Park.

This is a hostel and you get what you pay for. A sink, fridge, and tv in the room with a bathroom down the hall. It's small with old furnishings, but the hotel staff is friendly, helpful, and patient. The luggage lockers in the basement require payment (not your own lock) and are a bit pricey if used everyday. It's near central park and a short walk to the subway. Overall it's worth a small price, but not much more than that. If you want your own bathroom and housekeeping each day, stay at a hotel.

When we first showed up, they said they were doing renovations and made me and my friend walk ten blocks to another hostel at 9 p.m. down dark alleys by ourselves. They sent us to the candy hostel which fortunately was much better than the West End Studios hostel we had originally booked. I recommend this for only one night and if u are extremely broke college kids like ourselves who just needed a one night stay to sleep. The bed sheets were dirty at the candy hostel and their really is absolutely nothing in the room except a bed, one mirror and a picture frame. I asked room service for fresh sheets and they said not 'til morning. However, we were only staying one night so we slept on our shower towels. It did have a cool lobby where a lot of college kids were hanging out on their laptops and watching a flat screen tv. West End Studios however, was disgusting and run down. Than k god they transferred us to candy hostel. There are holes in the walls and the doors are broken. Bathrooms are nasty and scary looking people were sitting outside their window sills smoking. It was gross. I recommend candy hostel even though that was not too clean either, but way better than West end studios.
