The Penguin Hotel

The hotel and its rooms themselves were ok. It's a great location right on the beach with decent rooms. And the staff was nice and friendly. BUT, I specifically requested 2 rooms with 2 beds each in my reservation and I called 1 week in advance and spoke directly with the hotel to confirm. When we got there though, it took them forever to get us a room […] with 2 beds. It was kind of a hassle. And then one of our rooms was DIRECTLY across the hall from the kitchen and our room door was frosted glass, so we could hear EVERYTHING happening in the kitchen which was annoying. Hallways are dark. Elevator broke and we had to use the stairs multiple times. (we were 3 stories up) Bathroom had a bad odor probably due to the lack of ventilation. The only good think about the hotel is that is was on Ocean Dr. If your looking for a hotel based on price only then this may work for you.

I stayed in the room 302, but it was a nightmare for me and my wife because the room 301 made a lot of noise until 5am. I was suprised at how nice the room was. I love the decorations. TV only had like 4 working channels unfortunately. Who cares though, why would you wanna watch TV when you are staying in Miami. Room was very cool looking. Great for couples trying to do something romantic on a budget.

I was very disappointed with my visit to the penguin hotel. Upon our arrival to the hotel I was informed that our reservation was unable to be filled. They had run out of rooms and had to put us in a different room. I had originally reserved a room with two beds and was given a room with one bed. The bed was stiff and two mattresses. It was not a Queen […] bed at all. It became very uncomfortable when the mattresses began to separate in the night. Parking was another ordeal in its self. There is no parking at the hotel. Your two options are to park on the street and pay the toll, or pay the hotel to valet your car at their sister hotel. It cost us an extra sixty dollars to park the car. From the moment we arrived it was an issue. We were told that we had to put a $50.00 per day deposit for what i really still dont know. That was an unexpected expense because it was not written anywhere that you need in addition to what you already paid for the room. Very deceptive. Almost everything in the room was broken...the toilet, the shower head, […] the tv remote, the mattress squeaked like it was 100 years old and was horrible to sleep on. The safe in the room and on the second to last day the air conditioning broke and they moved us to another room where when u took a shower it sounded as if you were going to fall through the floor. The penquin hotel halls needs more light. The hall was dark and dingy. In addition, the walls are very thin. The Penguin has a very good location. It is close to the beach, restaurants e shopping area. Our room was modern and clean. The bed was very noisy but we were able to sleep just fine. Expect very small elevator and hallways. This is an old building so there is nothing to complain about it.

Even after Anthony from Hotel Impossible did his magic, the hotel needs help. I know it's an older building and there's only so much a coat of paint can do. The elevator had some issues. The room, I didn't understand this massive wood top, glass bottom/walled of mirrors, window level structure. It literally went from one end to the corner to the other […] end. Which, I can imagine, covered up something behind it, but why not make it more functional and inviting. Make cabinets or drawers out of it. It did, have a hidden slide out desk top, that extended all the way, to the foot of the bed. But the room needed more outlets. I had a corner room, which was really nice. The Shake Your Penguin Martini, is good, however, for added business marketing, they should've had it for sale. The Penguin shaker is ideal as a gift and souvenier. I would stay again for it's location, specifically. The price was good too. However, the $50.00 deposit for each night, the continental breakfast, that is located at their sister hotel, the valet service or lack of needs vast improvement. Finally, we had to call the hotel, to request them to clean and service our room. And we've been in and out since 9 AM that morning, and the room wasn't cleaned. It was about 4 PM, when we called them. And yes, the bathroom is dated and needs help, especially when the handle of the shower facet came off. Read more

The curtains were stained, the bed was not in really good condition and the hotel overall is a two star hotel. If you only care about the location.. it is the right choice.

Amazing location on Ocean Drive in the Art Deco district across from the beach. Very nice front desk team, The Purple Penguin restaurant in the hotel was also quite good. The flat bread pizza and greek salad my favorites. Love Lola, she was a new employee in the restaurant and made a point to make everyone feel very welcome in the restaurant. My room […] was facing an alley and was very quiet but no actual view. The decor was a bit dated and the room needs some touch up painting and new mattress and bedding. The bed was very hard and the pillows not plush and the linens both for bed and bath very threadbare. The $15 resort fee includes a chair and towel for beach, internet, two small waters,and two comp cocktails at sister hotel and continental breakfast at sister hotel. Not worth the walk for the breakfast. Eat at the Purple Penguin and pay for breakfast/coffee. The shower was difficult to use since the movable hose/head does not stay in place. This results in water all over the floor when you shower since it has a half glass tub enclosure. When stepping in the tub, the entire floor creaks and groans probably due to rotting floor under the tub from excessive water. Read more
