"Big disappointment!!!"
Stayed one night post cruise. First off, the hotel needed $100 deposit for room damage, then the elevator could not accommodate me, my sister and our luggage at the same time. The all blue, scary hallway reeked of smell like a gas station restroom! The door to the room had gaps all around it, not very secure. The next morning the elevator was out of service and we had to walk 3 flights of stairs[ I have bad knees].The only redeeming thing was the nice outdoor restaurant area with good food and service. Miami is VERY costly as they automatically add an 18% gratuity on all food and beverages!

"A Penguin in Miami"
The hotel is a great bargain for the location. The bar/restaurant downstairs serves decent food for a decent price, considering the area. It is right across the street from the beach and on a quieter part of the strip. The rooms are a bit "broken down" (drawers don't close, doors are crooked, etc) but clean and safe. I had no problems sleeping and would definitely stay there again.

"good location, quiet end of the street"
The Penguin Hotel is of course very old, so you can't expect the spacious or luxurious amenities you would get from a Westin for example. The rooms are small, but we only slept and showered there and spent the rest of the time sightseeing and enjoying the nightlife along Ocean. It is very quaint, the staff are friendly and helpful. They offer beach towel service for their guests which is nice, and a continental breakfast. It is the quiet end of Ocean Drive, which we liked because when we were done partying, it was nice to be able to go there and sleep without the crazy loud noise. It is right across from the street from the beach, so the super convenient access was also a huge plus. Not luxury, but it is authentic Art Deco, and I would stay there again.

"Great location, customer service lacking"
This hotel was alright. My wife and I were here for a few days after New Years just to see the city and have fun. It was a great location right on Ocean Drive, the best place to party in South Beach. But the room was really just an open studio and place to sleep, nothing more. The staff weren't that nice, and were rude at times. We definitely got the feeling that we should feel privileged to stay in their establishment, not like guests in a normal hotel. It seemed like they really did the "bare minimum" with everything, room included (having last been updated in 1972 lol). The continental breakfast and welcome drink were cheap at best. On a positive note, the room had a fridge, which was nice, and they did give us 30% off your meal if you ate at the downstairs restaurant (which they didn't tell us until after we had already eaten there waiting for the room to get ready...). The other positive thing was the location because you could really go anywhere within a 10-15 minute walk. Just be advised that in South Beach they charge 18% gratuity on EVERYTHING service-oriented. It was also close to the beach and "beach walk", so that was an added benefit. Overall, stay at this hotel for the price and location, not for customer service or amenities. "Better Than Expected...Staff & Location A+"
The Penguin was just as I expected from the reviews online, however, I found the staff to be much more friendly and helpful than a lot of other reviewers. There are negatives, like the overall cleanliness of the rooms and hotel, the outdated nature of the rooms, and the fact that although I read that it went through some renovation show a few years back, it did not feel renovated at all. The weird tapestry behind the bed was definitely hiding some sort of bad wall, because it was not wall paper and the wall was uneven behind it. The white pleather sitting chair was filthy and I wouldn't even throw my clothes on it, let along sit in it. For what it's worth, a quick night or two, in a great location it was worth it. The breakfast that's included was good, and you can add items from the a la carte menu at a 30% off discount. Beach towels are included, but the chairs at the beach are of course a charge. The blue umbrella right across from hotel are cheapest we found, $12 per chair and $15 for umbrella. House keeping staff was honest an helpful when we left valuables behind and showed up for them hours later. Front desk was accommodating and friendly.

"Great location, terrible service"
The hotel is located in South Beach so neighborhood is great, other than that I wouldnt choose this hotel...the day we arrived we had to wait for an hour to check in because there was nobody in the lobby, everyday they were short of personnel in the restaurant so the service was truly awful, the elevator was out of order for the 5 days we were there. To be fair rooms were cleaned everyday and never felt dirty

"Mediocre Hotel with a Great Location."

"4 THUMBS DOWN!!!!"
The room is run down. Room 401 shower is clogged. We still feel dirty after our shower. This hotel is not sanitary. Esteban was the only person who made us feel welcome and told us about the local and tourist area.

I would stay again at this Boutique hotel absolutely..Loved it..clean, quiet ,suave rooms and good food and good bar drinks and walk to all the clubs like Mangos and The Mansion,Versace's Villa etc etc..there's a 24hr Walgreens around the block and it looks like a yacht!

"Miami isnt for us!"
I actually didnt stay even though we had paid reservations.Arrived later in the evening,there was people running everywhere,no were to park,people drunk at the outside tables, did go up and check room ,small and could hear all the noise from outside. After discussing we decided not to stay and would rather loose our money than stay at this hotel!

"Close to beach"
Although we had to wait for several hours for a room the staff was very good. It's a Great location right across from a park and the beach. It's an older hotel and decent in shape. Loud air conditioner. The employees are the best thing going for the hotel.

"Misleading, Lobby Bedroom and Dirty"
We arrived around 12p and the front desk lady offered us a room "on the first floor that's just down the hall" and she wasn't going to charge us an early check in fee. I signed all the paper works and got our keys. Our room was right behind the lobby's elevator and across from the kitchen's door?!!? We can constantly hear the kitchen door slamming and people walking in and out. We immediately went back to ask for a different room. Her response was that she told us exactly where the room was and we accept the condition, which wasn't true. We thought it was down the hall behind another door where the rest of the rooms are. She claim all the rooms are booked and we can't switch to another one. Not to mention, the bathroom wasn't very clean. We wore our flip flops when we showered. I wouldn't recommend this place. They charge too much for the room that we got, wasn't clean, misleading information and poor service.

Check in was easy. The AC was a built in to the side window so whomever slept to that side, was freezing! Bfast was ok. They didn't allow any outside food at the patio. I ordered bunch of things on my girlfriend was on a special diet due to her health condition the manager said she cannot have any outside food at the premises due to some policy. Hotel also charges you for some resort fee which was not stated in the hotels.com

Very clean, however, bathroom too small, also the window blinds were not working properly and my window was facing the next door hotel room had to turn the light off in order to change my clothes. If I had to stay longer than one night this would've been a bigger issue.

Small hotel with small room wihtout a desk or a chair. Bathroom confortable and complete. pleasant staff.. Morning coffee limited selection, included in your room rate, however you have to pay U$ 20 daily resort fee which include morning coffe (included in your room rate, side orders U$ 10), complimentary drink and wáter and one small towel for the beach. . Beach umbrella and confortable chairs U$ 35. Add to this parking fee of U$ 20.

"Overall OK"
We booked this hotel just for a night and loved the location because it was right across the street from the beach. The front desk was not very pleasant when we first arrived. Nothing I take personal, but just made a little mental note about it. The 2 complimentary drinks at check in were great.. probably would have been better if the bartender didn't look like she hated her job... but again, nothing we took too personal. The room was a little small, but bearable I guess. The bathroom was tiny. Overall the hotel is good for just a night, 2 at max, but could definitely get a little uncomfortable beyond that.

"Great Location for a brief stay"
I'd like to put a disclaimer on this review. I am a penguin fanatic. So I may be biased. But, we very much enjoyed the stay. They give you free welcome drinks during happy hour the first night you are there and you get free breakfast on certain items or discounted rates on other meals. The food was good for being such a small kitchen. The room is not large so for an extended stay I might have wanted something bigger. But for the two of us it was great. Within walking distance to most restaurants, both shopping locations on Lincoln and Collins and SO close to the beach. We would definitely consider coming here again.

"Ocean front view."
I visited South beach for the first time, and I found the penguin hotel on expedia for a really good price. I bought it, and decided to stay for my 24th birthday weekend. It was the best visit I've ever had on vacation. Staff were friendly & social, drinks/food was great, the room cleaner cleaned the room every day; it was an automatic great four day stay.
