Howard Johnson Salinas

Room was decent, clean and fairly comfortable. However, parking was full both nights we stayed there and had to park across the street, which was pretty scary. I still can't explain why I paid more for this hotel than for a beach-side, 3.5 star hotel in Monterey! Who knew that Salinas was this expensive!

It was very comfortable. I just did not like that check in time was 3:00. When I initailly called Hotel.com. I was told it was 12:00 noon check in time. Because of this we were un able to attend a very special event that took place at 1:00. If check in time would have been 12. It was have been great.

We stayed here at this hotel with 2 small children and within only a few minutes my crawler had dark spot on hands and knees from the carpet floor which had clearly not been cleaned in a long time. Okay...not the worst I've stayed at. They were nice at the front desk, they got me my room..nothing fancy. The bed was comfy..shower was just ok. I enjoyed my stay while I was there. they could upgrade the rooms a bit more, but I didn't even stay in the room long enough to care.

The neighborhood was questionable but the hotel seemed to border decent areas and shady ones. The room was clean and quiet and the front desk attendant was also professionally dressed and friendly. Overall I would stay there again any time.

This hotel is within walking distance to a quaint old town area. There are many good restaurants. The hotel is manager is very accommodating. I arrived early and he checked me in with no questions.

I realize that rooms here are cheaper than most hotels in the Monterey area, but the room was nothing to write home about either. The hotel and the furniture are quite old, the A/C in the room had no thermostat (just an on/off for hot/cold), the TV was ancient and very round, the bathroom area was poorly laid out and space was tight, etc. On the plus […] side, the room had a mini-fridge and microwave, and the included breakfast and Internet were nice. My wife and I did a last minute weekend trip to Carmel and Monterey. Unfortunately, all the remaining hotels in the Monterey area were well over $300 per night. We ended up booking at the HoJo in Salinas for about 1/4th the price. We got a bigger room than we would have gotten in Monterey, along with a nice king bed and free breakfast. It only took […] us about 25 minutes to get back into the Monterey area and we saved a bundle. Check in was quick and painless, and our king room was clean and comfortable, and surprisingly roomy. My only small complaint is there was some street noise overnight, so we turned on the fan to drown it out a little. I am a VERY light sleeper so this probably wouldn't bother most people. But the bed was comfortable and I got a good night's sleep. The free breakfast was good. They have cold/hot cereal, a waffle maker, mini pastries, toast, and juices/coffee/hot chocolate. We stayed for 2 nights in the hotel in order to do some trips to the Monterey and Big Sur area. Took over two hours to make room temperature comfortable. This is a good low- to -moderate cost hotel that is located near some "iffy" neighborhoods in Salinas. This was not a problem however. Checkin was fast and easy. Room was comfortable and condition of room was fair. Not really dirty but just worn abit. Surrounding area is a bit poor but it is what Salinas has to offer. Location was great as we went to the annual airshow and close enough to Monterrey Bay. I would stay again at the same rate but not much more

There is a balcony-style hallway which is mildly charming. The hotel is relatively centrally located to bthe downtown and much is within walking distance.

We needed something close to Monterey and found this hotel in Salinas. It was outrageously priced due to the major events in the area but not much else was available. I don't know how they got a AAA rating! The room was in significant disrepair and absolutely filthy. Never again!

room is tiny and outdated. No vending/ice machine on second floor, can only get ice on the main floor, sigh~). Elevator only operate during certain hours. Late check-in (after 10pm) can only access through the stairs.

The room looked okay upon entering. However, it was filthy. Walls were grimey. Dirt around handles, light switches. Toilet...I have seen cleaner toilets at gas stations. Soda spray all over wall. Sticky gunk on counter and in tub. Tub was visibly dirty. Hair in sink, counters and in tub. Side of tub looked liked it had not ever been wiped down. Found […] a dirty bra by the bed...NOT MINE! Floors gross...they vaccumed like my sons did when they were children...(only where the vaccum sat). Called front desk to complain and ask for a clean room. No answer. Doors to office locked. Very very disappointed. Slept with clothes on fearing that we may get something from the bedding. Didn't leave the room and hotel only because it was after 11 pm when we arrived. Terrible terrible room. Never ever would I reccomend to anyone. Read more

Not the best place. Kinda shabby and rundown. The staff was helpful, but the place wasn't the most comfortable. We only stayed one night, so no big deal. But, I wouldn't stay here for more than one night.

The hotel is older but the rooms have been renovated so they aren't as bad as we expected. Nothing fantastic. However, the room service was terrible. We stayed 3 nights and the bathroom was never cleaned, only towels replaced. The carpet was also not vacuumed so our baby could not crawl around. The rooms were clean and the bathrooms were in serious need of remodeling. They were as clean as possible, but toilet and shower both needed updating. They had stains that couldn't been cleaned.
