"Below HIE Standards in My Opinion"
08/25/14 Mark E Burlington, Wisconsin
We recently spent 2 nights at the Holiday Inn Express in Fenton while visiting the St. Louis area. It was on a Monday and Tuesday night. We had already stayed 2 nights at a Hampton Inn in the area, but found ourselves still exploring St. Louis. Unfortunately Hampton was booked, and we were unable to extend our stay there. Staying here was really a step down from staying at Hampton. I am starting to wonder about the HIE chain because after enjoying this chain for many years, 3 of my last 5 times at a HIE location have been below the standards I have become accustomed to. The Fenton location was another HIE that just seemed below the norm of what HIE used to be. We walked in without a reservation, and our check-in process was interesting. There were 2 women at the desk. One of them was new and being trained by the other one. The trainee was very warm and friendly but the one doing the training seemed cranky and in kind of a bad mood. They put us in a standard 2-queen room on the 3rd floor. We enjoy being on the top floor because of not hearing any overhead noise, and the fact that it tends to be quieter. The room was OK, but not great. One of the beds was way too soft. It nearly sunk to the floor if anyone sat on it. This bed clearly needs to be replaced. The room also did not seem to be real clean. There were layers of dust on the table and TV dresser, as if the room had not been used in some time. There was also a used cup on the floor from a previous guest. They need to be doing a better job of cleaning here in my opinion. Our room was also stocked with NO bath towels in the bathroom, and we had to go back down and ask the front desk. The same cranky worker was at the desk and gave me some towels, but she also did not seem to hesitate to degrade the housekeeping staff right to me, which I thought was kind of unprofessional. We used the indoor pool for a while one of the evenings, but found it to be VERY small. In fact the sign states that the maximum pool occupancy is only 10. It is a very small area that seems dingy and old. We were disappointed to see no hot tub, which is unusual if the hotel already has a pool. The pool area needs some updating. We also used the fitness area the next evening and felt that could also use updating. The equipment was very dated in there, with only a stationery bike and a treadmill. The cookies in the evenings were a nice touch! We really enjoy the breakfast at HIE, with the cinnamon rolls and pancake machine, and this location was no exception on that front. We had a hearty breakfast both mornings! The host could do a better job of keeping items stocked, however, and not just standing around. Both mornings he would just stand and watch the news on TV for 5 minutes at a time. It was kind of awkward one morning when he was standing just inches from our table watching the news. We also love the showerheads at HIE! I felt that the business center Internet computer was in a nice location on 2nd floor that offered some privacy. However, the 2nd night when I was using the computer for a few minutes, there was lots of loud talking in the lobby. I just assumed that it was guests, but when I looked down there, it was staff members socializing. I found this kind of unprofessional, as it sounded like they were having a party down there. Overall, our stay was adequate, but it did not stand out as anything great. There are other choices in Fenton and the western part of the St. Louis area, and I think we will be looking elsewhere next time. We would take this HIE over some of the budget hotels in the area, though. As far as I'm concerned, this was just average.

Location is perfect but a tad difficult to maneuver through while finding it. Staff was nice and helpful when tending to the needs of my one year old son. They set up his crib in the room and insisted on asking if I needed anything else. The bed was comfy as usual and the room itself was spotless. Good stay.
"Good location between Six Flags and downtown STL"

My family and I come to St. Louis at least once a year and we decided to stay here based on its location between downtown St. Louis and Six Flags. The Hotel was clean and the staff was helpful. I think we came on a busy weekend for them because the cleaning lady came around at 8:15am and must have not heard me because she called after that asking what time would have be ok to clean the room. Also the breakfast area was very busy the first morning and the staff had a hard time keeping the area stocked with food. We probably won’t stay here again because I have stayed at better Holiday Inns in St. Louis.
"Another Great Holiday Inn Express Stay"

We stayed here for 4 nights on a week long vacation. While staying here we visited Six Flags (15 minutes straight down the interstate) several days. The hotel both in and out is clean and in good appearance. The lobby has fresh baked cookies and fruit in the evening. The pool though not large is clean and warm and was never crowded during our stay. The kids enjoyed the swimming. The breakfast area isn't huge but other than the 8:30 rush we found it to be not over crowded most other times. Ample seating, tv with the morning news and is clean. The breakfast here along with all Holiday Inn Express' are great- eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits & gravy, hot & cold cereals, pancakes, pastries/breads, fruit, milk, coffee, tea, and juices, yogurt. The staff was constantly cleaning and refilling and we always left the hotel in the morning stuffed. The staff was always nice and helpful. Our room (we had a family jr suite) was large and always clean. The beds and pillows were a godsend on the tail end of a long vacation- best sleep we all had all week! We never had trouble with housekeeping coming too early- we would just use the do not disturb sign every morning until we left for Six Flags and not once were bothered and always came back to a clean room. The location and the proximity to Six Flags and other St. Louis attractions, and nearby restaurants is great. We have plans for another St. Louis vacation next year and will definitely stay here!
"Just an average stay"

Went to Holiday inn express and asked for early check-in and they were very accommodating in doing so. The staff was very nice and helpful. Room was clean and roomy. Problems I see with this place is they are trying to get rooms cleaned starting at about 8:30 am, a little early if you ask me. As for the morning breakfast it is your typical hotel breakfast. I did find the taste quality was lacking from other breakfast's I have had. The breakfast area got real crowded and many people just grab food and went to their rooms. Finally someone came around and told people they could go to the conference room but that was too late for some. We have stayed at this hotel before and I forgot how hard the bed was. Not good for me as I had a very poor sleep, the wife did not mind it. Will not be going back to this hotel because of the bed and food.

Stayed one night the staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms where clean, and one thing you really don't read in reviews is water pressure which mean alot to me, and yes the shower had plenty of pressure. I would suggest to go out for breakfast though, my experience was after taking a bite of my breakfast only to follow up with a big drank of spoiled milk. But it happens should have check before I took a drank. Other than that our experience was nothing but great.
"Very Nice Hotel"

Check in and check service was professional and quick. Note, no AAA or AARP discount unless you use the Internet to book your room. We picked them out of the AAA book and arrived without a reservation. Sad no discount. Condition of hotel was very good, modern, and clean. Beds were good and you get two pillows; hard and soft. Good parking, well lit. Room AC was not that good. Had a hard time keeping the room around 70 degrees. It was either too warm or too cold. My only real complaint. We did not sleep well and I attribute it to the room temperature. The TV was good and they use Charter. But the TV comes on in analog mode and using the analog channels. If you pay attention and hit the enter button when the dialog box is telling you what show your watching, the set switches to the high definition channels. Bathroom size is adequate in size but not big. The shower was terrific. No problem with hot water. Excellent water flow from the toilet. The complimentary breakfast selection is excellent. Three or four hot items and you can make your own pancakes. Good selection of other items and the orange juice is not diluted. I would return again but only if I booked online to get my AAA discount.

This hotel is right off interstate 44. Not that easy to get to, but worth the effort. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The shower spray was wonderful. Breakfast the next day was better than good. And the wait staff was very attentive. An interesting feature is that the hotel offers a breakfast to go bag. Nice touch. My only complaint is that the walls are thin. We must have had some little ones running around all night because the pounding of little feet make it difficult to fall asleep.
When we checked in it seemed ok...until we got to our room. It smelled like a zoo when we opened the door and then, it was the wrong room, not what we reserved. They had nothing else available except offering us a roll away bed for the kids. We left and went to best western at Kirkwood which was great!
"Okay. Improvements needed."

This is a smaller hotel that seems to show it's wear around the edges. The carpet needs to be replaced in the rooms. The toilet took several times to flush a piece of toilet paper. My husband said it's just an older style that takes more water to flush. The water leaked all the way to the carpet from the bathroom. We figure there is a lot of mold under the carpet. The pool is very small and my husband saw poop at the bottom of the pool. The breakfast in the morning was good, BUT they were very overwhelmed with the amount of people eating this specific morning, and the front desk person was running back and forth trying to help stock food. The food was never fully refilled, and we could see where they were trying to warm up food in a microwave as fast as they could. My child never got bacon because they didn't refill it. They do serve chobani yogurt! I also noticed they have soy milk as an alternative to regular milk. The beds were very comfortable! Overall, this is a smaller, older, Holiday Inn Express. If they would do a major renovation, I would probably stay again. Everyone was very nice.
