Quite the poorest hotel I've stayed in for a long time. Appearing as 4* on the Expedia website, it would be lucky to rate 2*. Small, basic rooms with a faintly unappealing smell. Staff member most unwelcoming when we checked in, saying (at 16:00) that our room (we had booked 2 rooms) wasn't ready (in fact they were). We booked the shuttle service to the airport only to be left sitting at reception as we had been wrongly booked on to a later bus - this could have made us miss our flight. They did eventually call us a taxi at a preferential rate, but this kind of hassle you can do without.

I was expecting much worse after reading reviews. But our stay was pleasent, hotel was charming, view was stunning. Room was small but cozy. Receptionist was nice. Location was amazing. Would come back!

I booked a room for three adults for four nights. On arrival was shown to a room with two single beds. Two hours later a fold up bed was provided. The room wasn't really large enough to take it. I was told this was their normal practice. I complained and was told by two reception staff that no other rooms were available because the hotel was fully booked for the rest of the week. After complaining to the manager they then found an additional room with a proper bed - for an extra charge. Not exactly 4* service!

We've stayed in this hotel many times - the location is excellent within walking distance of the shopping centre and local bars and cafes. The hotel is historic, the rooms are large, comfortable and airy, most have a view of the canal in some shape or form, the breakfast is excellent,

Notice in room stated that it was 100% fresh, but it certainly smelled strongly of smoke. Hotel decor was tired! Lovely building, but needs tlc. Staff were friendly and helpful!

Upon checking in I was informed that a 50 euro deposit was necessary as I had booked via Expedia and they are considered a third party company. I declined to pay that as it hadn't been mentioned when the booking was made and the manager was cold and dismissive and informed me that she would send someone to my room to empty my minibar. I was also asked to pay the city hotel tax (3.25 euro) immediately - which was fine. If there is a deposit required upon check-in then this should be mentioned

We arrived 6 hours before check in, was told we could go and have breakfast while they made the room ready for us. A good start to the stay. Unfortunately the guests in the hotel were extremely noisy during the night so much so that the Night Manager was called and she put a guest out. We had a very disturbed night.

The location of this hotel is excellent. Within walking distance to most city centre attractions. Based on overall condition, It is not a 4 stars hotel, it should be rated 3 star. The hotel is quite dated, but the bathroom has been renovated. The mattress is too soft, not quite comfortable. We had paid $20 per day upgraged to a Canal view room. The view is excellent, but it is very noisy until mid-night until the bar/restaurant on the ground level next door close for business.

Never a 4 star small room toilet had musky smell,Plug socket on wall had selotape holding it together, small old TV? When leaving had to pay a Tax Charge for nothing also tried to charge me for Mineral Water packet of M&Ms and a third thing I cant remember. Hotel was quite run down, room overlooked a very noisy street, friendly staff but didn't have a standard smoking room so we had to upgrade to a superior room & pay extra, if house keeping arrived & you had a "do not disturb" sign on the door they left a goodie bag with a note outside your door which was very nice.

The hotel is in a good location, not far from the city centre and in a quiet place. However, the room is outdated and not well maintained. The lift has stopped working for a while and we had to use the stairs to climb up and down to the 4th floor as there is only one lift.

I booked this hotel as a few days away with one of my friends. It was on offer at the time with Expedia and I guess it is what you pay for. I wouldn't have been pleased had I paid full price. Hotel is rather run down but the staff were fantastic, very helpful and friendly. The room we stayed in was very run down and not due as many stars as suggested, it was comfortable. Just needs a refurbishment to achieve that status again. Location was great and the hotel easy to find.

Hotel elegant and well appointed with friendly and efficient staff. Found the room comfortable although on the small side. The area was good and convenient, though the hotel is tired and with the room we had, noisy. However the staff were great, and knowledgeble, especially when we required directions to the Supper Club! Plus it had great bars and cafe's attatched. We would book again but would request a canal facing room. The area has a lot to offer.

Similar to other reviews, this hotel feels pretty dated - the decor is in need of refreshing throughout - in the communal areas and in the rooms. My room had damage along the bottom of the wardrobe (probably from bashings from suitcases!), small tears in the wallpaper, chipped paint on the window frame. In terms of cleanliness, generally good - the bathroom was spotless. However, the net curtains in the room looked dirty, were missing some hooks so didn't hang straight and weren't big enough for the window - I was on the 3rd floor and it would have been nicer not to have had them at all! Also, there was a stain on the carpet in front of the wardrobe - probably from someone trying to make a cup of tea or coffee as the only place to plug in the kettle was a socket inside the wardrobe! Otherwise, the facilities were good with a trouser press, kettle & teas/coffees (only powdered milk in sachets), over-priced mini bar, fixed hair dryer in the bathroom. Of particular note was an excellent shower - brilliant pressure and a great way to wake up. Excellent location for everything central, but surprisingly quiet for such a central location. My room did face onto the canal, but I didn't have any problems with noise as mentioned by other reviews - maybe I'm just a heavy sleeper!

The hotel is centrally located with easy walking distance to all the tourist places we wanted to see.The staff was helpful and friendly. The room was clean, reasonable size, but the shower was not that good. The water temperature varied quite a lot. The breakfast was excellent as was the dining room overlooking a canal. This would once have been a very grand and opulent building so it is sad to see it has been allowed to deteriorate. I booked this hotel on one of the mystery hotel deals for a 4 star hotel and was a little disappointed. I would not describe it as 4 star. The staff were excellent , attentive. I was offered an upgraded room on check in and thought , ok let's treat myself. Comfortable but shabby. Wallpaper peeling, scuffs, unattractive and old fashioned. Breakfast buffet, excellent if a little expensive. Overall a pleasant stay but the hotel could be so much better. Problem is Amsterdam is expensive and I suppose upgrading the facilities to a true 4 star hotel would push up the price considerably.

Hotel was in a great location, no more than 10/15 minutes walk to all the main points of interest. Rooms could probably do with a bit of modernisation but they were very comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast is pretty pricey at €20 each or €15 if you book a day in advance but there are plenty of places near the hotel to choose from. Wifi was pretty temperamental.

Location is very good. Close to major shopping street. Rooms are a bit spartan but extremely clean. Don't bother eating breakfast in the hotel - instead head next door to the very cool airy 2 level Cafe de Jarden. In summer, they open the patio right on the canal. Also the cafe attached to the hotel lobby is not too bad either for quick latte.

Booked a superior room which was then upgraded to what was called a junior suite. Nothing like a suite, just a larger room. Dread to think how small the regular rooms must be! Was worth the fabulous view though...beautiful. The hotel has original period features in reception and fantastic stairwell...however looks as if the rooms were last upgraded in the sixties and forgotten since then...peeling paint....grubby decor...creeking floors. Customer service inconsistent...ranging from very good to very poor. In theory had wi fi in room but connection impossible most of the time. Double bed turned out to be two joined up single mattresses.

The hotel was very tired in appearance and had seen better days. It is badly in need of renovation. The bed was uncomfortably soft with little in the way of springs. It is a 20 minute walk to the central rail station. It is central to the museums, shopping and the red light district. The room was suprisingly clean as were the linen. I would rate it as a 3 star but not the four advertised. Not value for money.

Hotel in a lovely location overlooking river Amstel. The hotel looks a little jaded and could do with a refurbishment. That said they were replacing carpets on the stairs ,so maybe it is the start of some improvements. Nice central position with plenty of bars and cafe's in the location. Easy to walk to any of the major attractions in 15-20 mins.

Yes a bit faded, but clean, comfortable and in an excellent position - at the edge of the city centre but easily within walking distance of the museums and markets. I read the comments before I went and felt a bit concerned however these were unfounded. If you're used to staying in character, slightly shabby (but clean) hotels in Europe this will not disappoint. Comfortable bed, white linen and clean towels. Just a tip though - the internet is free but you need to ask at the desk where they will give you the id and code, if you try to connect from your room it says that there is a cost. Go to the Doelen, don't expect shiny luxury, but enjoy none the less.
