"Needs LOTS of updating!"
We did not like this hotel at all. It was dirty and out of date. Our room was on the back of the building and the sliding doors were frosted so as not to see the trash dump behind the hotel. The staff was not friendly. We requested towels, waited all afternoon and had to request them a second time and still had to wait another hour! There were no beach […] towels available and only 1 person was at the pool. We waited more than 1/2 an hour for a server at breakfast and never got served! Finally just walked out. "nice hotel, walk around town"
Very nice 6 day stay. Older hotel, but room was immaculate and comfortable. Plenty of protected free parking. On the other side of a very busy 4 lane street from the harbor, but easy to cross with convenient controlled crosswalks to stroll along the waterfront. Lots of activity in the harbor, from sea planes landing and taking off, to fabulous yachts […] offloading their ultra rich owners. Easy walking distance (2 minutes) to many restaurants and the shops and the historic district. Texas BBQ sets up right in front Tuesday through Saturday, and a wonderful food truck parks next door with breakfast and lunch. I must confess I was a bit nervous my first night out. It may be the U.S. Virgin Islands, but it is definitely the Caribbean. The hotel backs up to a fairly scary looking neighborhood, which extends to the west. But their is lots of foot traffic along the main road to the east to the Charlotte Amalie downtown area, at least around dinner time. Definitely try Gladys' for local fare, opens for breakfast but it is closed by five while I was there. For a easy good breakfast (didn't try their lunch) with a fabulous view of the harbor try Bumpas. Beware, downtown dinner options are limited Sunday night, especially if their are no cruise ships there. You can find cheaper hotel options if you are willing to drive or be driven every night for dinner, but I really like being where the action is, and being able to stroll home. "Comfortable hotel close to the airport"
We used the hotel for one night before flying back to UK. The reception staff were very helpful as was the barmaid in the terrace bar. Our room was clean and comfortable with good views over the bay. Wifi coverage was good in the room and elsewhere. The only disappointment was breakfast with very poor service. I looked at the reviews, like i always do before encountering a hotel or product. The hotel had mainly bad reviews but i took a chance. I checked in after 5 pm and the room was amazing. I was having trouble carry both suitcases and a gentleman came across the courtyard and helped me. Once inside the room I attempted to order room service but the phone […] did not work. So I took a stroll to the restaurant and met Melvin who took my order. He was very friendly. Upon checkout the lady was not smiling but she was pleasant just the same. I asked for a taxi and within five minutes one was there to transport me back to the airport. My stay was comfortable and yes I would stay again but not for the price. We arrived at 10:30 p.m. after our flight arrived, we took a quick cab ride to the hotel. Which is located across the street from the ferry station. Which we needed to be at the next morning at 8:00 a.m. So needless to say we really only slept there and left. The CRAZY thing is that night when we checked in.... My husband took our 2 boys with him and the luggage and I soon followed to quite a wild situation. When I arrived at the tables, my 13 year old son looked stunned and my 10 year old son was shocked that the waitress ripped my son's box of fruit loops out of his hands and screamed where is your father..... Crazy!!! She screamed it was a private breakfast and that we were interrupting... we had to pay $ 30.00 for the breakfast buffet... my 10 year old son had a piece of bacon and an egg and my husband had a piece of french toast and three pieces of bacon. I had one bite off my husband's plate... wild start to a fun trip. THEN... after our sail trip was over we stayed there our last night - there was music playing LATE.. which you could hear in your room, and after we all fell asleep for an early flight - a car alarm went off in the parking lot for about a half hour! All rooms besides those facing the Ocean are dark, old and smelly. In my first room TV was not working. So I asked to be moved to a different room. Same story there: toilet will not flush, there was no water pressure […] in the shower, temperature of water was changing constantly without touching fossils, safe was not working, all kind of stains on towels and sheets, which at one point were white-now yellow color. Long human hair in he bathroom and on the sheets. No paper to write in the room, no pencil or pen, and I can keep going. I travel a lot for work. Will not ever stay in this place. I am not one to publicly bad mouth anything. But this hotel is not the quality that it is being presented. It is old property, it is in no way worth the rate they charge. The service by the staff/employees is not friendly, and often it felt like they had our money and had no concern for their guests. Water pressure in the room was hit or miss, sometimes […] a shower was a trickle/drip shower. St. Thomas is a beautiful Island however to get a quality stay, you need to spend the money and stay at the Marriott. Food service and the quality of many establishments left much to be desired, and in fact don't go to St. Thomas expecting to be able to dine comparable tastes or pricing to the continental U.S. Very Expensive, and there are no, name brand dinner food restaurants. Now it sounds like I didn't like the island, but it was beautiful. It just needs more clean, modern hotels, name brand restaurants, and an attitude change for service personnel who don't understand in a tourist world, the customer needs to be taken care of. Oh yeah, if you go, be careful on tips, the will add an 18% gratuity in the ticket and still leave an additional blank line for tips. Read your receipts. The hotel is in a great location, right in town and near many shopping centers. There are food trucks that are near by and food locations as well. My only concerns were the laundry and water. We only had 2 face towels in our room and when housekeeping came, they weren't replaced with new ones. The rooms are nice... cold- as they have a big ac unit over the bed but they only provide you with 2 sheets to cover up with. In a tropical place like this, I guess its not necessary to bundle up, but it should be my choice whether or not if i need to use a comforter. Sometimes during showers the water would turn cold for about 10 seconds and when you first turn it on, you have to let it run to ensure you dont see any brown water.... The worst thing about this hotel is the staff followed in a close second to the views. they seem to have a tier system and the rooms rented thru this site are lower tier rooms which command terrible views of a junk yard and abandon buildings. The photos and descriptions from web/travel sites are very deceiving. This place is horrible. First, the front desk person needs to know what customer service means... and it starts with a smile. She barely looked at us when she was checking us in. Not to mention she didnt even explain anything.. she just put the key infront of us and we had to ask […] if that was it. She didnt tell us where anything was... NOTHING! To make matters worse we asked for a possible upgrade and her attitude was sour "we have nothing, check tomorrow"... then she put us in a room with a view of a garage or some sort (see photos) and the room smelled like soaked dirty clothes! The bathroom floor smelled liked urine and everything from the outdated furniture to the tube tv was horrible! Not to mention the "free internet" was ridiculous to get into and they had the nerve to ask for $75 deposit to use their golf materials. What?!?!
