Overview

Located in Calgary's arts district, Hotel Arts is within six blocks of the Telus Convention Centre and the Pengrowth Saddledome. Also near the Stephan Avenue entertainment district, the hotel is 20 kilometers from Calgary International Airport.

A boutique hotel with an urban-chic motif, Hotel Arts showcases a rotating collection of modern art within its public spaces. The art's bright palette coupled with the warmth of the lobby's fireplace envelope guests at check-in. Grey art-deco furniture and a front desk with a stone façade complete the lobby's elegant look. On the building's second floor, fitness-minded visitors can work out in the hotel gym. For more dedicated athletes, access to nearby Talisman Centre can be arranged for a fee. With rattan chairs, cabanas and large white umbrellas, the hotel's poolside area may trick guests into thinking they're not in Canada anymore. A seasonal poolside patio bar plates snacks and libations, including the chef's special, Piccolo Antipasti. The Raw Bar serves local fare all day and offers an extensive wine list.

Inside the 175 guestrooms, orchid plants extend vertically from the wall alongside flat-screen LCD televisions. Ebony-colored wood furnishings round the décor out. Bathrooms are accented by Carrera marble.

A short guide to Downtown Calgary

Calgary, with a population of more than one million residents, is Alberta’s largest and Canada’s third-largest city. The observation deck at the top of Calgary Tower provides an excellent view over downtown, including Stampede Park, site of the annual Calgary Stampede, and the Saddledome, where the Calgary Flames ice hockey team plays. The nearby Calgary Zoo is home to more than 1,000 animals.

The lobby is nice, but the rooms leave something to be desired. Very dark, makes you wonder what they are trying to hide. Any room that has TWO air purifiers makes you wonder... The TV is great if you like to watch snow. Maintenance came, saw, and couldn't fix. Staff is fabulous and made the stay bearable.

After being treated fairly rudely in a hotel in Toronto we were pleased with this hotel. It is conveniantly located within walking distance of Stephen st with shops, restaurants and street entertainment. There was also a very nice museum on canadian history. The receptionist gave us an excellent recommendation for a restaurant (Catch ) in Clagary, which we really enjoyed. It was some of the best fish we have eaten. The hotel room was very clean, although a little dark. We found the service excellent and the staff extremely friendly and helpful.

First and foremost, I am a business traveler. From all indications, this should be a nice hotel. It does have the foundation to build upon. But, there were a few things I did not like. When I got to my room, I realized that any hall-way noise was really loud in the room. When other patrons were walking by talking at normal levels, the noise seamed amplified in the room. I could also hear someone drumming in another room. I ate breakfast in the restaurant. Service was very slow and the food was not that good. I was under the impression that this hotel was downtown. It was not. It was several blocks from the main downtown business district (the elevated heated walkway system). Rooms were comfortable, but a little cramped. Bathroom was very nice. Overall, given a choice, I would stay somewhere else.

We chose this hotel to stay for our last night in the Calgary/Banff area. After a great stay in Banff, we decided to spend our last day in downtown Calgary to get a feel for city. Our room was on the 2nd floor: Mold and grime in the bathroom, paint peeling off the ceiling, flies in the room, hairs in both bed linens, and a cold water shower before catching our 7AM flight. This is not an exaggeration! Complained to front desk, and they said would call me and refund half of my money. Never heard from them....called them 2 days later and was told it would be taken care of. To this day, no one has contacted me. The ironic thing, for a hotel that calls itself "Hotel Arts" and has a Arts inspired theme.....there was not a single piece of artwork in our room!! The furniture all looked second hand, scratched and damaged! Never bothered with writing a review of a hotel until this experience. I highly discourage anyone from staying here...it was a real let down to an otherwise great week in Alberta.

This hotel amazed me on arrival. I have experienced in 5 star hotels all over the world -- from Shanghai to Tokyo to Los Angeles -- I don't think Hotel Arts is officially in the 5 star catgegory but I would choose this hotel over all of them. It is a hotel of style and exquisite interior design, without the formal chic or pretentiousness that you would experience with the big wealthy chain hotels, say the Belaggio in Vegas or the many Parisian hotels I in which I have stayed. The hotel is simply a pleasure and comfort to hang around in; the staff are mostly young people but 100% efficient and polite; the restaurant and bars are worth regular visits even if you are not staying in the hotel. Perhaps I was simply tired, or jet lagged, but I have rarely experienced such a comfortable bed, and waking up at 3am I could watch multiple channel TV on the super-large plasma screen on the wall. Excellent place -- I would spend a few nights there even if I lived in Calgary.

I was pleased that the staff did not take issue with the fact that we were a male couple sharing a room with 1 bed. The person who checked us in was clearly embarrassed, but every member of staff was friendly. Our room was nicely decorated in a modern style (it was advertised as a "luxury" room), and was very comfortable. The location is not the best if you plan to do a lot of walking. There are regular taxis outside the front of the hotel and Calgary's local train system is only a few blocks to the north. The hotel is also in the centre of Calgary's art district, with lots of good galleries close by. However, the north of downtown is a bit of a trek. The best selling point of this hotel is the quality of its luxury rooms.

Both restaurants were of a very good standard and although I admired the decor of the Raw Bar the service was more personal in the french restaurant. The car service was a pleasant extra.

Pretentious, Noisey and expensive. And which 'quality' hotels still charge for internet? WE were given a room which backed on to the construction of the extension. Work began at about 8am and the pile drivers were busy from then. There wrere workmen walking across the flat roof directly outside our room - It meant we couldn't enjoy the balcony. My biggest gripe was a $10+ charge for internet access. Even Super8's provide this for free. There is no excuse in this day and age to charge - I was told free wifi was provided in the lobby and bar - I explained that my bed was not in the lobby. The hotel is only 4 blocks from 8th avenue but it's a threatening 4 blocks; We felt particularly nervous going under the rail bridge returning after dinner. On the positive side the bed was comfortable and the in-room toiletries excellent. But there are hundreds of better hotels in town ... so don't stay here - ever.

We stayed in luxury rooms - it was in the 12 story tower part which may have been better than the 3 story wings. The rooms were a nice size, but darkly decorated. Needed more lamps! Sliding glass doors to the street were quite sound proof. Staff was SO polite and helpful! Restaurants were amazing and highly rated locally. Decor was cool - kind of W-hotel-ish. Negatives: no fridge nor safe in the room, but the front desk had safes. Valet parking was a steal for Calgary $15 a day, when people pay up to $30 a day to park for work there! Only 4 blocks from great shopping and restaurants. Fabulous after work gathering around the pool/social scene. Construction on the property is building 7000 sq ft of retail/ballroom space - will be nice!

Hotel Arts is a makeover of an old Holiday Inn. Room was extremely clean and European in feel, great bed, tad bit on the dark side. The common areas felt like they needed a good spring cleaning. Had limited A/C in room which unfortunately wasn't able to be fixed. Hotel is sort of on the edge of downtown but within easy walking distance. On the whole property didn't deliver enough bang for the rate demanded.

The Hotel Arts is a remodeling of a prior hotel. Construction is going on for a new addition (should be done before year's end). One bar was good, but the poolside extension of the other restaurant seemed to have a lack of wait staff to support it. Personally, I appreciate being able to order breakfast via leaving a checklist card on the door before I go to bed - this was available the first night I was there, but not the second or third nights. Music was playing by the pool past midnight my first night there, but it was halted the moment I spoke with the front desk. The chandeliers were very artistic and funky. The lobby was artistic and funky as well. Each room was different - I stayed there with members of my family in all different rooms. The bathtub in my room was difficult to step into - it was "tall", and required me to lift my leg high to get into it. This was not a major problem for me, but for someone with leg problems (like, say, my mom) it would require a change of room. The water in the shower - at 11 am on a Friday - went completely away. Not sure why that was, and it only happened once. So in that, I have mixed reviews about this hotel. For the price I paid, I would have rather stayed at a different downtown hotel. I will not stay there again.

Interesting art pieces throughout the hotel -- thankgoodness the art wasn't IN our room. It was soooo dimly lit that we wouldn't have been able to see art in our room! VERY comfortable bed and bedding, nice bathroom.

Reviewed by Star of Houston on May 11, 2008

The actual room was so beautiful, just like the pictures. It was clean and the staff did their job well. Unfortunately, this particular hotel is around the corner from a HOMELESS SHELTER and, for a city where many people walk, I wasn't thrilled about walking alone due to the questionable neighbors. Also, I had to stay for a week for business, and for the price I paid I was surprised the rooms had no fridge or "bar" situation with overpriced snacks. After work, I was hungry! Finally, the business center was NOT AVAILABLE when I was there due to some construction. Hello, I am a BUSINESS TRAVELER. The staff was a bit confused when I asked where I could print out some web documents and it took a good 15 minutes to get that done at the front desk. Then, I needed to fax that item, but opted not to ask the staff because these tasks seemed like such a challenge. Oh, and can I get internet included in my price? Ooh, sorry, no, that'll be an extra $10.45 a night. Sheesh. Not business-friendly. I also needed a bottle of water, which I ended up paying $13 to room service for. First time I saw a bottle of water for more than $5 at a hotel. Too pricy.

My wife and I picked Hotel Arts because it was downtown and close to the Saddledome where the hockey game we flew to Calgary for was played. We stayed Friday through Monday and had an outstanding time. Members of the hotel staff went out of there way to make us feel comfortable - the valet staff was always pleasant and helped us with directions each time we asked - the front desk was especially helpful in making recommendations for a really great resturaunt in the city and for a super hockey bar - pints before the game! The Raw Bar hostess, Meghan, was wonderful. She made us feel welcome immediately with her great smile, cheerful greeting and a recommendation for the fantastic Crab - Mango rolls with our martinins - and the food and table service was outstanding (Pad Thai and Alaskan Sablefish). Our next visit to Calgary will definately include a stay at the Hotel Arts!

Hotel Arts is a great place to stay. They're still doing renevations so it's not entirely complete, but the part that is finished is beautiful. The Raw Bar restaurant is pricy, but very good. The pool area is immaculate...very trendy. The rooms are also trendy and elegant. My only complaint is the noise that was heard throughout the night coming from a bar on the street adjacent to the hotel. Also, it would have been good to know that valet parking (which is the only type of parking they currently have) was $14 for one night.

Only thing this hotel lacks is a free coffee/tea cart in the lobby. Other than that, it has it all: great location, cleanest room I've ever had in a hotel, nicely furnished, bend-over-backward helpful friendly staff, and a comfy bed.

Upon arrival the staff was friendly and competent. On site parking [valet or self park both for a charge] was a plus, and the staff provided a good recommendation for late-night dining. The neighborhood around the hotel needs a little revitalization, and a 10$ per day charge for wired internet in the rooms did not cater to business travelers or those looking for activities in the city. Easy distances to other Calgary neighborhoods, and easy walks around the city. One gripe--music was piped into the concrete [and empty] pool area at 4 in the morning, and was an unwelcome sound to awake to. The issue was resolved quickly with a telephone call to the front desk. Would recommend the hotel for those who look for a local non-chain city stay. It was lovely.
