The hotel provides free wi-fi and has finally upgraded to LCD TV's! If you do have a room that overlooks Wabash Ave, you will hear the "L" train, which sounds like thunder. I was very happy. The hotel was near the Lyric Opera, the Lake Front, and shopping. What's not to like. At first I was worried about El noise, but my room on the 10th. floor was very quiet. Perfect place to stay in downtown Chicago. Plenty of attractions, stores, and restaurants within walking distance. The only regret I have is bringing my car. I paid well over $200 over the weekend for parking. Next time I visit downtown Chicago, I'm taking the train.

Overall the stay was quite pleasant. The CTA Train was literally outside our window so at times it was a bit noisy however once we adjusted it wasn't very noticeable. The hotel clerk was very nice! We met our son in Chicago to see a show and enjoy Chicago for the weekend. Reserved an 'executive suite' on the backside of the hotel away from the el so he could have sofa bed while we had king bed. Disappointed that the hotel (knew three would be staying in room and that the sofa bed would be used) did not make up the sofa bed ahead of time (we made […] it up from sheets in the closet). Also not enough towels for three people. King mattress needed replaced (sloop to middle), ice bucket had one handle broken, TV cabinet had missing pull and cracked door. My wife and I had a good experience at the Silversmith Hotel. It's a small, old hotel on the same street as the elevated train, which we thought would be a problem. We had a room in the back of the hotel, so we never heard the train at all, but it's handy if you need to travel that way. The hotel is a historic landmark and has been well preserved and […] updated with all the current amenities. Our room was larger than we expected for an older Chicago hotel and was complete with a large flat screen tv and a refrigerator. Also, they have free wifi in the rooms and throughout the hotel. We had a few "issues" during our stay, but the hotel staff was more than responsive and solved everything very quickly. The parking is expensive and more than the nearby public lots, but if you need your car during your stay, it's the only way to go (public lots/garages don't have in and out privileges). The hotel is only a block off of all the shopping on Michigan Ave and there are many name brand stores within a block or two walk. We would definitely stay at the Silversmith again. Read more

This is not what I expected. I was supposed to get a suite. They called it suite, but it was a dark single room with a bed, a desk, and a sofa. Window curtain was hanging on one corner. Although they say that this building was designed to have rooms with lots of light for the silversmiths who worked there, it was dark, even with all 3 table-lamps on. Reception […] was friendly. Rooms were clean. Bathroom looked like a hospital bathroom. They had 3 guys leaning on their desk at the front door, the 3 days I was there. No-one offered any help to open the front door, which was very heavy and difficult to open. You had to lay down what you were holding in your hands and stem your entire body in it. Parking fees were outrageous, exceeding $ 50.00. I have never before heard of this hotel, and found that I was in good company with every local I spoke to and with taxi-drivers. Forget the in-house restaurant that they promote. Location is excellent if you have business in the loop, or are there as a tourist. All Theatres are in walking distance. Orange line to Midway is just in front of the hotel, blue line to O Hare is 2 blocks behind Hotel. Again, if you expect a suite when they offer a suite, make sure to call before and ask how many rooms your suite has. Read more

We had a wonderful time at this hotel. I went with a girl friend, but this place is perfect for a romantic weekend. Its conveniently located to stores, restaurants, and Millennium Park, and we were even able to walk to Navy Pier! The L runs right outside, but you could hardly hear it from our room. Conveniently located, comfortable, clean. Nice tall ceilings, and was quiet on the 10th floor considering the El was close by.....didn't bother us at all. However we were on the opposite side and the view was a large brick building. Nothing to look at, but the quiet was well worth it.

The location is great as an EL station is right outside the front door, State Street shopping is around the corner, and the Kriskindermarket is less than three blocks away. The Silversmith is located right by the EL and although we could hear it - think about hearing a train off in the distance. No effect on sleep at all. Wonderful big rooms. As other reviews have stated. Our only issue was the room temp is toasty even after turning off the thermostat. Luckily you can open the windows to cool down the room.
