"A two-night Birthday getaway with my Hubby!"
After a few little snafu's and a misunderstanding about the amenities of our room...(which were quickly resolved as soon as we checked in!), we truly enjoyed our stay at the Hill House Inn! The staff was very helpful and friendly! I will admit that having to spend extra money every night to rent a fridge for a suite was a bit much, but again...they […] corrected a problem with my billing immediately...so really no complaints about fridge pricing...lol! The suite was very beautiful and spacious with a fireplace, and a slider door to a deck....I originally wanted an ocean view suite with a "jet tub", but unfortunately the hotel could not accommodate because of our dog...(which we really appreciate them accepting pets!). Here's some of the drawbacks to the hotel...there are no air conditioners(not in our room anyways!) It was the middle of Sept., and they said usually it doesn't get up to 80 degrees or over , so they're not needed...well, on this particular day, t was over 80, and we had spent a few hours hiking and walking on the coast. We then came back to shower for dinner...it was a bit warm getting dressed. The sliders didn't have screens on them, so we couldn't open them very wide because of our dog! also, the breakfast is VERY limited...if you like pouring your own waffles onto a waffle cooker or having bagels, coffee, and juice...then it's your kind of breakfast! It's a beautiful place in the quaint village of Mendocino. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
This hotel was once a gem. Now it is more tired than modern. It was clean and fine. The bed was like sleeping on the floor. The free breakfast was not worth the visit. I would rather camp next time.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We were very disappointed in this hotel. We were of the impression (from photos on web) that it was fairly close to the beach, when in fact it is probably a mile away. The 'gardens' (landscaping) were not maintained at all, and the lawn was all dead. We were told our king room would have a fireplace and a "furnished" balcony. They gave us a room without […] a fireplace OR a balcony, but let us move to another room after we complained. The rooms are clean, but run-down and definitely need a facelift, as well as a decorator; however, the main building (lobby and restaurant) are beautifully renovated. We found out that the hotel is for sale, so it appears that the owner has no interest in maintaining it. The staff at the desk were friendly and wanting to help, but we would never stay there again unless a new owner fixed it up. It has a lot of potential! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"rundown hotel and its for sale"
The hotel is clean but very outdated. Upholstery and fabrics are shabby. Bed is rock hard. Musty odor because there is no air circulation in the rooms.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel on its last legs"
Probably the worst hotel for the price I have ever stayed in. Water went off for a while in the evening while in the middle of a shower. No real apology from management. The breakfast buffet was very poor; not even any cereal, granola, or yogurt. Unbelievable for Mendocino. Furnishings might be antique but kind of creepy. Of course, the "for sale" sign […] in front of the property might explain a lot. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"A bit dated and shabby."
While famous as the setting for Murder She Wrote in the 1990's, the hotel has aged and there are fewer amenities since our previous stay 10 years ago. There no longer is a restaurant on the property, although they offered us a 15% meal discount at their "sister property", the Mendocino Hotel, several long, dark (at night) blocks away. A fair continental […] breakfast (complementary) was provided on site in the morning. Our room was cozy and homey. The staff were very nice, and the peaceful setting on the hill above town was a plus. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Would not stay here again"
For the price, this hotel was very disappointing. Staff continually tried to charge my credit card when I had already paid via Expedia. There was no air conditioning. There was a wedding at the hotel and the noise was very loud through-out the night. The cable connection was not working and my husband had to fix it. The continental breakfast was merely […] fruit and some "Costco-style" bagels. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nostalgic, but not in a good way."
We just needed a place for one night, and most places in Mendocino were requiring a two night minimum due to the Music Festival, so the Hill House served our purpose. The location to town is a nice walk, but there are so many nicer places to stay in the area, that I would not make this a repeat stay.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great hotel that allows dogs"
We had a wonderful stay and were welcomed with our large Lab (90lbs) Room was very comfortable with a fireplace and close to the picnic area with nice places for the dog to roam in. I will definitely be going back to this hotel when we visit in MendocinoGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Rundown and dirty"
Rundown with a bunch of chintz flounces and bric-a-brac that wasn't cleaned. Loud AC that woke us up during night and mildew in bathroom. A Best Western or similar would be a better option. This isn't an old inn. an old inn -- it's really a highway motel.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Not inspired to go back"
Beautiful setting and convenient to town. Problems: mattresses too firm for us, couldn't get really comfortable. Also, the complimentary breakfast is ridiculous. No pastries, no bread except bagels, no cereal. Never had so little at such a place. I think they want people to spend at the Mendocino Hotel, which has an excellent breakfast for those who […] want to pay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

You can tell that the hotel was really nice back in the late 80's....Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice location but not worth the price."
Hill House is in a nice location overlooking the Pacific. The booking promised an ocean view with balcony. No balcony and just a small dirty window overlooking a row of trees with only the ocean and no shoreline to view. The room was clean and large. The grounds are not well kept. Gardens were overgrown with weeds. The breakfast was a dissappiontment. […] Worse than you'ld get at Holiday Inn Express; do it yourself waffels, bagels and a bit of fruit. Bus your own dishes. This property is OK, but definitely not worth the premium price. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Property is tired and needs an update. Location is good. Walked to town. Breakfast is good. Poor wi-fi function. Overall satisfactoryGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A very nice stay"
Hill house is located on the hill overlooking the town of Mendocino but its only a short (5 min.) walk to the main part of town. Parking is no problem. It has a charming lobby and restaurant/bar. This was the setting for the TV show "Murder, she wrote". The rooms are quite adequate but not what you would call fancy. My only complaint is that the pillows […] were not comfortable. The staff were very helpful and polite. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great value for Mendocino!"
I was surprised to find a large lovely room, lovely grounds and a good breakfast at a "hotel" rather than a B & B in the tourist mecca of Mendocino.Genuine Expedia guest review
Disappointed in entire stay. Breakfast (?) was a plastic cup of waffle batter (make your own tasteless waffles). Coffee was weak. Maid service was spotty. Never did get coffee pkgs for coffee maker w/o having to go to desk. It was like staying in an empty old hotel w/o staff. No "life" . Huge dining rooms, but no cafe or restaurant. Won't return.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Fun Thanksgiving trip"
The hotel was well located, comfortable and very nice; very comfortable bed. The staff was helpful. The only thing that would have added to the experience was stronger coffee at breakfast. Otherwise it was a really good experience and we had a fun time.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good choice in Mendocino."
Hill House Inn is in a quiet location in Mendocino, walking distance to the village center. Views of the ocean from some rooms. The staff was pleasant. The complimentary breakfast was very good. It is large enough not to be too intimate so that you have to make conversation with the other patrons at breakfast, something we prefer. We really liked it. […] My only very small complaint was that the lighting was rather dim, making it slightly hard to read. We would definitely go back there next time we're in the area. "A hotel on the verge of a nervous breakdown"
Unhelpful, self-absorbed staff; garishly weird "antiquey" gimcracks; no fresh fruit or cereal in the Continental breakfast; and the water completely vanished from the bathroom without explanation or apology. (Something broke.) Practically no other guests in a large hotel. This place is clearly on the way out, and the management has stopped trying. Do […] stay instead at the SUPERB Little River Inn, just two miles away. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Very mediocre for the price. The location close to downtown Mendocino is all this place has going for it.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
For the amount it cost for one night, it was substandard. Beds are extremely hard, room was dirty, service was terrible. It took 20 minutes to check in and then they said they would charge us $50 if anything was ruined in their room. When we entered the room, I laughed at the audacity of such a charge. I'm sure they haven't renovated in many years, […] it was dirty, and the carpet was filthy. I was very unhappy! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"great town thin walls"
The service was adequate, but there was an undo focus on signing disclaimers when we arrived, and an absence of welcome. The location was perfect for walking into Mendocino or onto the Headlands. The big downside was the noise from adjoining rooms--above and on either side. Felt like the couple next door were in the room with us, and that was well after […] midnight. The stay did not take away from the charm and beauty of Mendocino, but it didn't add to it either. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Aging without grace"
Hotel was used in the filming of Murder She Wrote and not sure it has had much updating or maintenance since. Rooms are not well maintained or cleaned. Found lots of dirt. Walls are paper thin as are the floors. Conversations and TV's in adjoining rooms can be heard readily in your room. Heating system is very old and steam, so takes many hours to […] heat up the room and is hard to regulate. So if its cold out ask them to turn up the heat before you arrive. Staff is generally pleasant and its not a bad location. Although its less expensive than others in the area, it still seems expensive for what you get. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Victorian style hotel, full of character"
An amazing place to stay. Our room not only had two comfortable armchairs but also a couch which was a treat. Very comfortable bed. Deck outside with two deck chairs. Was classed as a room with an ocean view but view was only minimal. Plus no chance of any view the day we arrived as lots of fog (and apparently this is common). In summary a great place […] to stay but wouldnt bother paying extra for an ocean view. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice large room that has seen better days."
Lovely lobby and grounds and very courteous friendly reception. Perhaps it was because we had a pet room but I have never seen such horrendous decorating. A miss mash of New England, French Country and French Provincial and maybe Victorian. Really out of date dried flowers and one of those dusty grape vine wreaths with fake flowers over the bed. There […] was also a huge grate in the floor which seemed to serve no purpose. The continental breakfast was fine and served in a beautiful upstairs room with a view all the way around but it was uncomfortably silent. You could hear everyone else chewing almost. It would be nice if they put on some kind of very soft music. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
This is a lovely old hotel that is slighted faded around the edges. It is set at the end of town, and might have a lovely view - we had thick cold fog for our whole stay! There was a nice enough breakfast. It was a nice place to stay. There was a friendly Irish pub nearby which was good for an evening meal.Genuine Expedia guest review
