Disappointed in entire stay. Breakfast (?) was a plastic cup of waffle batter (make your own tasteless waffles). Coffee was weak. Maid service was spotty. Never did get coffee pkgs for coffee maker w/o having to go to desk. It was like staying in an empty old hotel w/o staff. No "life" . Huge dining rooms, but no cafe or restaurant. Won't return.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Fun Thanksgiving trip"
The hotel was well located, comfortable and very nice; very comfortable bed. The staff was helpful. The only thing that would have added to the experience was stronger coffee at breakfast. Otherwise it was a really good experience and we had a fun time.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good choice in Mendocino."
Hill House Inn is in a quiet location in Mendocino, walking distance to the village center. Views of the ocean from some rooms. The staff was pleasant. The complimentary breakfast was very good. It is large enough not to be too intimate so that you have to make conversation with the other patrons at breakfast, something we prefer. We really liked it. […] My only very small complaint was that the lighting was rather dim, making it slightly hard to read. We would definitely go back there next time we're in the area. "A hotel on the verge of a nervous breakdown"
Unhelpful, self-absorbed staff; garishly weird "antiquey" gimcracks; no fresh fruit or cereal in the Continental breakfast; and the water completely vanished from the bathroom without explanation or apology. (Something broke.) Practically no other guests in a large hotel. This place is clearly on the way out, and the management has stopped trying. Do […] stay instead at the SUPERB Little River Inn, just two miles away. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Very mediocre for the price. The location close to downtown Mendocino is all this place has going for it.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
For the amount it cost for one night, it was substandard. Beds are extremely hard, room was dirty, service was terrible. It took 20 minutes to check in and then they said they would charge us $50 if anything was ruined in their room. When we entered the room, I laughed at the audacity of such a charge. I'm sure they haven't renovated in many years, […] it was dirty, and the carpet was filthy. I was very unhappy! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"great town thin walls"
The service was adequate, but there was an undo focus on signing disclaimers when we arrived, and an absence of welcome. The location was perfect for walking into Mendocino or onto the Headlands. The big downside was the noise from adjoining rooms--above and on either side. Felt like the couple next door were in the room with us, and that was well after […] midnight. The stay did not take away from the charm and beauty of Mendocino, but it didn't add to it either. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A nice place for a soulful rest"
It has grear triunfa, in a quiet expanse of land with ocean views. It is a two block walk to shows, bars, restaurants, the bluffs of mendocino.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Aging without grace"
Hotel was used in the filming of Murder She Wrote and not sure it has had much updating or maintenance since. Rooms are not well maintained or cleaned. Found lots of dirt. Walls are paper thin as are the floors. Conversations and TV's in adjoining rooms can be heard readily in your room. Heating system is very old and steam, so takes many hours to […] heat up the room and is hard to regulate. So if its cold out ask them to turn up the heat before you arrive. Staff is generally pleasant and its not a bad location. Although its less expensive than others in the area, it still seems expensive for what you get. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Victorian style hotel, full of character"
An amazing place to stay. Our room not only had two comfortable armchairs but also a couch which was a treat. Very comfortable bed. Deck outside with two deck chairs. Was classed as a room with an ocean view but view was only minimal. Plus no chance of any view the day we arrived as lots of fog (and apparently this is common). In summary a great place […] to stay but wouldnt bother paying extra for an ocean view. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice large room that has seen better days."
Lovely lobby and grounds and very courteous friendly reception. Perhaps it was because we had a pet room but I have never seen such horrendous decorating. A miss mash of New England, French Country and French Provincial and maybe Victorian. Really out of date dried flowers and one of those dusty grape vine wreaths with fake flowers over the bed. There […] was also a huge grate in the floor which seemed to serve no purpose. The continental breakfast was fine and served in a beautiful upstairs room with a view all the way around but it was uncomfortably silent. You could hear everyone else chewing almost. It would be nice if they put on some kind of very soft music. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
This is a lovely old hotel that is slighted faded around the edges. It is set at the end of town, and might have a lovely view - we had thick cold fog for our whole stay! There was a nice enough breakfast. It was a nice place to stay. There was a friendly Irish pub nearby which was good for an evening meal.Genuine Expedia guest review

We loved it all, the elegance, the view, the history, the location, the room (#204), the breakfast room and chapel, the service, the setting...Highly recommended! Easy to walk into town to stroll the shops and eateries.
"Choose a renovated room"
08/09/14 CAgirrrl Sacramento, California
Based on reading other reviews, people were complaining about some of the rooms. However, ours had been renovated and was beautiful! The view and setting was quiet, pretty, and peaceful. It is off the main road on a hill so there is no street noise. Their continental breakfast is pathetic, although the dining room and view was beautiful. Choices for breakfast was waffles, hard boiled eggs, and store bought bagels plus coffee, tea, and orange juice. They are re-doing their kitchen so it may improve in the future. But even so, they need to offer more choices of food. The front desk staff seemed to be overwhelmed with phone calls and trying to help guests. It sounds like they need more help. For Murder She Wrote fans, this is the hotel where the cast and crew stayed when they filmed in Mendocino.
"Hill House Inn"

This place has good and bad things. The room was huge but the bed was really uncomfortable. The grounds were beautiful and decor lovely but the continental breakfast was lousy. When I'm paying $160 plus fees I expect a little classier breakfast. Love that it was pet friendly but our room smelled like pee when we first opened it. The rooms weren't very sound proof and the upstairs guest were really noisy.
We spent two nights at Hill House and would have been happy to extend had time allowed. We were given an up-graded room with a view of the somewhat distant ocean. Especially beautiful with the fog and overcast. The room was a bit shop-worn around the edges, but extremely clean and comfortable. The desk folks - Menthie and Seyrai - were especially friendly and helpful. The property is a few blocks from the main village, and has the feel of seclusion. Very quiet and restful. The breakfast is standard expanded continental fare with waffles, bagels, juices, coffee/tea/chocolate, boiled eggs and fruit. More than adequate for our needs. We'll definitely consider this Inn for our next trek to the North Coast.
"Not worth the price"

Several good things but several bad about this place. The good: nice location, we had a room with an excellent view for which we paid more. Friendly stall. Easy walk to town. Loved hearing the waves and the sea air always nice The bad. For the price not worth it. We booked via the Internet and paid fill price of $295 plus tax. I noticed others booked and got special deals. The furniture and decor were old and outdated and the place could really use some sprucing up. The bed we had was very uncomfortable. The breakfast was listed as continental but only had bagels, high fat cream cheese, waffles, instant oatmeal and some fruit. There was coffee and tee. No milk only one staff and expected to bus your own table. Would not book again. Look for something in town
"I was assaulted as I entered the room...."
07/04/14 Sarah C Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
......By the old fashioned stripes and patterns combination. Staff didn't know their rooms..it took three attempts for us to find one with access to the garden, which was pleasant to sit in the adironacks and watch the fog drift overhead. Bed gloriously comfy, weird papered over light switches, good shower. Breakfast disappointing (although the make your own waffle is always a winner). We'd go back, even if it's just to visit one of their murder mystery nights, after all this is Jessica Fletcher territory...
"A wonderful escape to the coast"

We stayed at Hill House Inn for two nights and absolutely loved it. Our room was spacious and clean, the bed was super comfortable, and there were beautiful views of the ocean from our balcony. Ashley at the front desk went out of her way to be extremely helpful, she was great.
"Relaxing in Mendocino"
06/28/14 NovtomCalifornia california
Spent two nights on a Travelzoo special and added a third also at special rate (ca $110) and enjoyed an enjoyable time. Room was spacious and very clean. TV is tiny but except for World Cup soccer we weren't into it anyhow. Continental breakfast as advertised - real good coffee and juice but unless you life waffles you do better in town. We spent three days hiking (headlands, van Dam and Russian Gulch) and looking at shops - two fantastic if expensive meals at Baujolais and Wild Fish (2 miles south of town) Mendocino must have a ban on chain motels and is enjoyable for that reason. May come back for music festival. Cant see why Feephee chose to come to Mandocino/
"Comfortable inn within walking distance of shops"
06/11/14 KnowsHowToTravel San Francisco Bay area
This is my second time staying at Hill House. Went on a Travel Zoo voucher. All of the staff were so nice to us. Our room had blue printed wallpaper and it felt cozy, more like an East coast B&B. You can open the tall windows in the room and get a nice ocean breeze (distant ocean views). Their "continental" breakfast is much nicer than most places. There is a waffle station where you pour the batter and make fresh waffles. Different kinds of bagels, fresh fruit, oatmeals. Hard-boiled eggs, nice coffee and teas - all with an expansive ocean view from the dining room! The inn is decorated with some interesting antiques. Beautiful gardens. Overall, a good value for a stay in Mendocino. Oh, and they gave us a bottle of wine, too:)
"Disappointing Hill House"
06/11/14 Feephee Reno, Nevada
We bought a voucher from Travel Zoo because their description made the place sound very nice. We arrived last night and are thoroughly disappointed. I can't find anything I like about the place other than the destination itself. Mendocino is beautiful. The hotel, however, is not. The hotel has obviously not been refurbished in years, if ever. The wallpaper looks like it has been here since the 70s. It is peeling and dingy. There is black mildew in the bathtub. The stairs from the first floor to the second floor are rotted in spots. The beds are hard, lumpy and uncomfortable. The furniture is ancient, marred and ugly. The walls have cracks and holes in them. They are dirty and dingy. The sink itself and the vanity area are tiny. The towels are thin and threadbare. The bed pillows are hard and uncomfortable. The windows are very dirty. One one can hardly make out the ocean that is across the street from the hotel. Breakfast was very disappointing. They advertise a continental breakfast,. They didn't even provide milk for the cereal and fruit I brought from home. All they have are hollow carbs - waffles with high fructose corn syrup, bagels with high fat cream cheese and artificial creamer for coffee. Nothing healthy at all. Unfortunately, we bought a 3 night voucher from TravelZoo,, otherwise we would leave now. Not that the place is inexpensive for what they provide. We paid $341 for the 3 nights including tax. I'll have to think many times over before buying another TravelZoo voucher.
