"Great hotel for central Edinburgh"
Lovely hotel, although bed not the most comfortable I've ever slept in, but not actually bad. Room, bathroom and dining room excellent.Genuine Expedia guest review
Convenient, clean, friendly knowledgeable staff. In need of some updateing, but nothing to put off stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice hotel but beware at Christmas time!"
A Butlins style party night until 0100hrs was not the best frotherwise pleasant hotel. even on We stayed on the third floor, though may as well have been in the converted dining room/disco. Good service etc, but it would be nice to be warned of the outrageous din during "the party season"Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good friendly hotel, but it has its drawbacks"
Convenient, comfortable, friendly and good food. However, the Internet, wifi access in the room (417) was none existent, a big let down. Also in the morning the shower temperature was tepid at best. The reception was made aware of these facts.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice public areas and not bad pool"
It is the best located for Holyrood (obviously). The rooms are a little dated and they could do with a better standard of cleaning, like most places, they just arent deep cleaned regularly enough. That said, I was surprised how nice the staff were, including a concierge who took a heavy bag, I had asked to store at reception, straight up to my room. […] I get service like this spontaneously about once a year, so kudos. Very helpful front desk staff make a stay for me and a rare 4 star review from me! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice weekend away"
WE had a lovely stay in Edinburgh. The hotel was great although arriving to find a resident playing the piano was a bit strange... not in the centre so quiet but close enough to be able to walk around the city. The concierge service was helpful and very friendly. WE looked at the gym which whilst small looked well equipped but the lure of cocktails […] won so we didnt use it. Cocktails very good. Breakfast was extremely good and plenty of food of high quality not the usual hotel fare. PArking was expensive but secure and if you break it down per hour no more than any other city secure parking Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Friendly Doorman, Receptionist also great......Big stains on chair in room, some sockets not working, Some surfaces not wiped in room...Bathroom not bad..Internet not working in rooms, only avaliable on the last day I was there..20 Pounds to park car....Genuine Expedia guest review
"Convenient and great spa"
Staff were so polite and offered suggestions to make our stay more pleasurable. Room was lovely but bed quite hard and lumpy - pillows however very comfortable. There was a strong smell of mothballs which spoilt the overall experience as I have sensitive sense of smell.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A short walk to City Centre"
We regularly have short breaks in Edinburgh although this was our first stay at the McDonald holyrood . The hotel is situated at the foot of the Royal Mile, right next to the Queen's Park -one of our favourite places for a stroll. A short walk up the royal mile brings you into the City Centre. There is a taxi rank outside the hotel. All staff were very […] helpful. The ambience of the hotel is relaxed and the food of good quality. The spa is comfortable and unhurried, with a direct lift. We will stay at this hotel again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Free Internet is not free for everyone .. Bad beds"
The beds were not comfortable, and the pillows were also lacking. New mattresses (more firm) and new pillows would have increased the plasure of our stay. Free Internet is offered in all rooms, but by cable connection only. Wireless in the rooms must be paid for additionally. With both my wife and I using laptops (like most couples these days), "Free […] Internet" would be more beneficial if it were wireless. So, in the end, the Internet was only "Half-Free Internet", the other half we had to either pay for, or go without. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"McG at McD"
Very nice hotel with well mannered staff and close to where I needed to be. It's a bit away from Princes Street but only a short stroll to Royal Mile, parliament and Holyrood parkGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Swimming pool was exceptionally clean and open early in the morning until late at night - a rare thing these days!!! The staff were extremely helpful also.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very quick visit to Edinburgh and wasn't in hotel much but it was very nice and comfortable and clean.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Comfortable and welcoming"
The hotel was very nice and staff very helpful. Only downside was the room - it was very warm even at night in middle of September and the air conditioning didn't seem to make much difference.Genuine Expedia guest review
the hotel is out of the shopping centre of edinburgh and a walk or taxi is required. The level of service is very good within the hotel and it is very clean. Parking a car can prove priceyGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Visiting friends for 3 nights"
We had a good & prompt welcome at check-in & luggage arrived very quickly. Fourth floor room & bathroom were all OK. The air con. was not working & the hotel was very hot. On contacting reception, a fan was quickly sent to our room & with window open, we had a reasonable temperature, though trying to sleep with the noise of the fan became impossible […] & vehicle noise woke us in the morning. For this reason our rating is reduced to 4. We did consider breakfast expensive, so went out. Close to hop-on, hop-off buses for sightseeing. All in all, a good stay, would return if visiting again. Between 7th to 9th Sept. 2012, I stayed at this hotel. It was very good warm welcoming, reception is good and helping, stewards are too helpful. The room was not that big, but for two it was OK and sufficient, the breakfast was not covered in the booking, but for the money which I paid, they should have included it, it was costing £14 per person. The […] hotel is situated on the north east of old Edinburgh city, which in general looks very pleasant and posh area, not too much crowded with public around. Local buses and stops are nearby, from City railway station approx. 2 kms, if you think of walking from hotel to train station, you have to walk bit of slope road. Shopping center is nearby to train station and bus station. for eating you can find plenty of restaurants around. Overall, it was pleasant stay to us. I recommend this hotel for everybody and I would definitely stay again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location, room & staff and great value!"
I really loved my stay here. The location is great, really close to Arthur's Seat if you feel like a morning walk, but equally close to the Royal Mile. There's also a great little cafe next door (right beside the BBC studios, which makes it perfect for people watching). The room was clean and comfortable and the facilities were fantastic given the price […] (full gym, pool etc.). The best part however was the staff in the hotel. No matter when or where I passed them, they without fail said hello with a big smile on their face and were very helpful. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Top notch service and comfort"
Located in the Old Town of Edinburgh location is excellent for visiting the sights or the Scottish parliament. My husband also enjoyed his early morning run in Holyrood Park. We were met at the door and our luggage taken care of and car parked for us. (There is a chargefor parking but worth it) Hotel very comfortable and rooms are big. There was a fridge […] in the room with fresh milk available from room service. We did find the rooms too hot and the air con. wasn't very effective. Staff were very appraochable, responsive and nothing was too much trouble. They were interested in ensuring all our needs were met and because we were staying for a family wedding we made a few extra demands which were all met without any fuss or question Use of Spa facilities and Gym were an excellent bonus to the stay Service exceeded our expectations even for a 4 star Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Nice hotel in great location with super spa facilities. Just one criticism - room was far too hot and air conditioning couldn't cope. Otherwise would definitely recommend.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good overall hotel. Friendly staff"
Lovely hotel , excellent staff but our room was just average. They wer a bit outdated it was like a sauna in there day and night despite the air con. I would say the best part of this hotel would be the restaurant and it's gym. The city centre, princes street and haymarket areas are al about a 15 min walk away which isn't so bad really although it takes […] it's toll after a few days site seeing. Good overall hotel! "Family for Fringe"
+ conceierge, location - skimping on breakfast, airco and wifi Had 2 rooms for family. Both rooms very hot as aircon didn't work and whole hotel felt stuffy. Heard others complaining about this at reception. Breakfast 18 pounds and 20 if you wanted kippers, yet service and food poor in stuffy, busy, cafe. Better value next door where Scottish breakfast […] is half the price and better quality in nicer surroundings. Internet not free and had to buy BT credits - this is such a huge inconvenience I can't believe hotels still do this when WiFi is more importent than having a flat screen TV in my opinion. The Fringe venues have free, easy, wifi so why cant hotels! Saving grace was the location of the hotel, the friendly conceirge and the fact the beds were comfy. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
We had to change rooms, because air condition wasn`t working, also no free WiFi in rooms. Breakfast wasn`t all that great, not alot of choices in hot breakfast. When we went to lobby for free WiFi, it wasn`t working for a couple of days! Quite a walk or had to take taxi to main area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good value hotel next to the Scottish Paliment"
Friendly and efficient Reception and Concierge. Rooms good size and spotless condition. Full breakfast very reasonably priced and good quality. It seemed the best deal while we were there was only to book the night before. Room costs were slightly less than nearby Travelodge and Premier Inn and this is a proper 4* hotel. Parking expensive anywhere in […] Edinburgh so £20 overnight parking charge was good value. "Hotel excellent, restaurant horrible."
The hotel is nice looking, the room clean, the bathroom/shower spacious, and the staff are attentive, BUT I would warn anyone staying here to avoid the restaurant. It's surprising that the food is so bad because the ambiance is lovely, the leather chairs comfy, and the service excellent. This was just setting us up for disappointment as the cooking […] is horrendous. First of all, I know my sirloin steak and what we got was definitely not sirloin steak but I chose not to be negative and we didn't have much time to eat. Also, I asked for it to be cooked medium and it was cooked medium rare. The "homemade fries" were soaked in oil and barely resembled fries. The meal was the biggest letdown of our stay. "Quality" is what Macdonald hotels aspire to so I would recommend that those running the restaurant eat at for example the Rutland Bar off Princes Street -- a place I ate a few days earlier and the steak there was simply sublime -- and do a little research in terms of what "quality" means. They should fire their chef as he/she cannot cook. The gentleman at the table next to ours actually sent his food back and asked for bread. We ate our food because we were starving and had no time to go elsewhere before heading to the theatre. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel but could maybe use a bit of refurb"
Room was nice and comfortable but was looking slightly worn in places. A little bit out of the way in terms of getting back into the centre (probably 10/15 minutes from South Bridge). Breakfast was a bit on the expensive side but was mostly pretty good. Watch out for credit card fees when checking out though.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We like McDonalds Hotels, you get a consistent standard. This remains a good value 4star hotel, with excellent service, breakfast and gym. Only issue is that decor now a little dated, but all hotels have renewal cycles.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The Macdonals Holyrood hotel is in an excellent location if you want to see the sites of Edinburgh, being right next to the Scottish Parliament buildings and a few hundred yards from Holyrood Palace. The hotel is very comfortable and well maintained. I found the staff on reception to be very friendly. The food in the restaurant was better than expected, […] if not stunning. The leisure facilties, gym and pool are very good for a city hotel. The only problem is that it is not that easy to find when driving and the parking is very limited. £20 for an overnight valet only service is very expensive for a UK hotel, but putting it in some context, parking in this part of Edinburgh seems to be universally a form of very high taxation! Must be all the politicians with their expense accounts nearby! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not a four star hotel"
Interior furnishings shabby, as with the service, put in smoking room, charged £50 to my credit card ("per authorisation"), bought breakfast vouchers which were lost and was nearly made to pay full price for breakfast, even bedroom bottled water was not complimentary (£4.50 - pretty excessive!). Condition like well maintained bed and breakfast, not […] four star hotel. Beds are standard double and uncomfortable. leisure centre good though. It isn't really value for money since it is not a four star hotel, how they reached that rating is beyond me.... Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Good hotel for Sightseeing."
We had a twin room on the 1st floor. Beds weren't great neither were the pillows, but they brought us foam pillows when we asked. The pool area was very nice and the main reason we booked this hotel. Around 15 minutes walk from the train station, Pizza Express and Tesco next door, very convenient. Expensive Breakfast so we decided to eat out.Genuine Expedia guest review

Dated hotel - rooms need a refurbGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Stayed at Macdonald Hoolyrood during a two night sightseeing trip. A twenty minute walk through the old town from Edinburgh Waverly station and in a great location. Upon arrival the room wasn't ready but staff happily took our bags as we ate lunch nearby. When we entered the room bags were already there and the room was clean and comfortable. Towels, […] soaps, shampoo, tea, biscuits and safe were all included. Beds were comfortable and the room had plenty of space. TV was easily operated. Location was incredible, a twenty minute walk from the amazing old town and a ten minute walk to the picturesque Hoolyrood park. Use of the pool and other facilities was included, although a children's swimming class was happening when we entered but swimming was still possible. Pool was shallow but acceptable for light swimming. The staff at the front desk were always pleasant and more than willing help us with our trip. The concierge desk was always manned with some one who would offer advice and tell you exactly where to go and how to get there. This made our stay so much more enjoyable with their help! "the best hotel"
This was a lovely hotel, 2 minutes from the royal mile and 5 minutes from the hubbub of the city, but importantly the rooms were quiet and very comfortable. The staff were friendly and very helpful . We didn't eat in the resturants as there were so many in close walking distanve.Genuine Expedia guest review
Central location - only 5 mins from main section of Royal mile however at the bottom of the hill therefore uphill walk in centre can be a struggle for older people. Needed to get taxi which cost about £4 - £5.Service excellent and quieter. Near university student flats.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Had a great night in the holyrood hotel! Very relaxing! Very nice people, clean room and a peaceful quiet hotelGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The hotel was very comfortable with good size bedrooms and ensuites. It was well placed for the "Hop on/Hop-off' bus and Holyrod Castle, but it was difficult to locate, as the street runs under South Bridge and not off it, as is indicated on Google.
