We have visited Kyoto 2-3 times a year for business in the last fifteen years and stayed in a few different 4-5 star hotels. We would rank this hotel on the top one or two - the best service and great location. The only downside is the cost of food at the hotel.

I really enjoyed the hotel. The service is great, bilingual, friendly and people are always at your service. They don't accept tips but they do more than anyone working at an American hotel. The hotel is very roomy and close to convenient hot spots like the outdoor mall area and great eating establishments. Taxi cabs are always waiting so you can hop in one if you need to go far. We took the bus once too and the stop is about 5 min from the hotel. I definitely like this hotel and glad I found it. It was the only one available in Kyoto for the dates I needed. It's close to the train station too...like a 10-15min cab ride. You can also book tours at the info desk.

Concierge and other services were excellent; always available and happy to help. Location was good, though a little bit away from some of the main tourist attractions (we biked and it was fine). Only downside of the hotel was that there was a hefty charge to use the gym.

This is a very beautiful, modern hotel in an excellent location. Our room looked out at the river and foothills. We were walking distance from the castle and palace as well as many stores and restaurants. The subway and a large underground shopping mall are directly connected to the hotel. Service was excellent. The staff was completely attentive. Free internet in the lobby. If you want a family room (for four people) book early. We had to book two doubles for our family. The Kyoto Okura is an exceptionally fine hotel. The rooms are clean, comfortable, well appointed. The staff is energetic and helpful. The location is outstanding. For travelers, access to the hotel from the Kyoto train station is either via a cab ride of about 1100 yen, or the trip can be made in a single bus trip or by subway. The lobby of the hotel is calm, sedate, dark. Our room was one of the larger doubles, and it was split into two sections by a small wall filled with storage spaces. Outside of the sleeping area is a sitting area, with a couch, an easy chair and two desks. A free and very fast wired Internet connection was at one of the desks. The other desk has a very helpful socket that can accept British, European or American plugs. The bathroom is very well appointed as well: it has a large vanity, a walk-in shower and a large bathtub. There is a high definition television in both the sitting area and the bedroom area. The hotel has two concierges on duty during the busy hours. They are very well acquainted both with local restaurants and with the details of how to get to any place one might wish to visit. The local area has many restaurants within easy walking distance covering a broad range of price and type. There is a multi-block covered shopping area two blocks away, and the marvelous Pontocho, street of restaurants and bars, is also only a few minutes away on foot. Kyoto is a wonderful city to stay in, and the Hotel Okura is a great place to stay in Kyoto.

My wife and I stayed at the Kyoto Hotel Okura for four nights in late March/early April 2009 and were very happy with our stay there. The hotel is very modern with nice rooms. The staff was great. Everyone was so helpful and they all spoke good English. As for the location, we thought it was very good. The central shopping and dining area starts just south of the hotel, about a 5-minute walk away. (The prime "main & main" interstection of Kawaramchi & shijo was about a 15 to 20-minute walk away straight down Kawaramachi). Plus from the hotel, you could easily walk to Pontocho Alley (which is parallel to Kawaramchi. The Gion district (Geisha Quarter and more shopping/dining) is on the other side of the river, another 5-10 minutes after you get to the prime shopping corner I mentioned, and also very walkable--we walked to/from Gion several times. By the way, there's also a subway station directly under the hotel. Anyway, we thought this location was infinitely better than the cluster of hotels around the train station where you can't walk to much at all. The Kyoto Hotel Okura is also the tallest building in the city with great views from the upper floors. There was a restaurant on the top floor where we had breakfast buffet a couple times. It wasn't cheap, but it wasn't outragous and it was good if you are in a hurry.

This hotel exceeded our expectations in every way. The staff are the best I have encountered anywhere. Upon check-in, I discovered I had made an unfortunate mistake in the type of room I had booked. They resolved it most graciously and to our overwhelming satisfaction. The staff were so attentive every time we entered the lobby, but not in an overdone or stuffy way. They were professional and knowledgeable, yet warm and friendly. The concierge and bell service were particularly helpful, and everyone spoke English (a huge help). The room was spacious, comfortable, and full of nice touches, like overlapping draperies, dimmer switches on the bedside lights, and a second clock in the bathroom. Housekeeping was impeccable. We basically felt really pampered here; it was a great place to relax, and there were plenty of eating and shopping options below the hotel, high end to quite modest in the subway mall. Centrally located, but also right atop a subway station. Loved it.

Hotel Okura is one of the popular hotels guarantee the best service you can get in Japan. It has been in the hotel business longest in Japan. You will be amazed by the services you get from every staff works there. They are well trained and there for you to provide the best services you can imagine. I actually paid half of what normally Japanese pay for this hotel by booking through Hotel.com. In addition, they somehow upgraded our room. Our room was spacious and very comfortable. The design is contemporary and modern, yet it has Japanese flare. Location is near Ponto-cho. Ponto-cho is where Geisha entertains the clients at night every night. There are many cozy and intimate atmosphere restaurants and bars in that area. I have no doubt to recommend this hotel to anyone seeks best services and comfortable pleasant stay.

Everything in the hotel was clean and very upscale. The service staff went out of their way to address any concerns we had. This hotel was one of the highlights of our stay in Japan. The location was great. It was within a short walk from all the sight seeing locations (Gion, Imperial Palace, Nijo Castle). The subway was in the basement of the hotel. The hotel also had many restaurants to choose from. Even our Goodwill Kyoto guide was very impressed. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Kyoto.

Kyoto Hotel Okura benefits from a central location, with its basement communicating directly with a subway station; so very convenient for transport. Imperial palace and Nijo Castle are close by. Eastern Kyoto, with its temples and other attractions, is just a short walk across the river. The hotel is superbly maintained, the rooms are equipped to high specificaton and the service is excellent, making this a highly recommended first class (4 to 5 star) hotel. The room and restaurant prices are quite high by Japanese standards, but probably what you would expect to pay for something of this standard (and actually good value compared to the equivalent in the UK or Europe).

Rommet var fantastiskt! Det var kjempestort, hadde 2 dobbelsenger, et kjempestort bad med både dusj og badekar. Det var også 2 lenestoler og et lite bord, slik at du ikke trengte ligge i senga da man var på rommet. Rommet hadde fin utsikt over byen og elva.Det var flere restauranter på hotellet, men jeg benyttet meg ikke av dem. Hotellet har perfekt beliggenhet til det meste.
