"Parking a major issue"
Due to a significant flight delay, I checked in at 2:30 am. When I inquired about parking, my only option outside of paying $16 for valet was to park several blocks away in a parking garage. Given the late hr, I had to take valet. Because I had to leave by 8 am, I asked if there could be a break on the cost, and there was no negotiation. The room was […] old, but clean and comfortable. Location is always very important to me, as I don't drive and need to depend on public transit and my own feet. I was visiting a good friend that had just moved to Michigan but worked in Toledo. My flight arrived in Detroit after midnight and had reservations at the Grand Plaza for a 1 king bed suite. The hotel had us stay in a 2 queen bed room, but since it was so late and we were both tired, we didn't mind. The Grand Plaza upgraded us to a 1 king bed suite with huge windows and amazing views of the maumee river and downtown. I even needed to request a late check out and the staff didn't even hesitate. I stayed at Grand Plaza on the night before my marathon. The valet attendant was unfriendly and unhelpful that I decided against using valet altogether and ended up finding a very convenient street parking over night - for free (which worked out better for me). The front desk was friendly enough when I checked in, though the attendant looked visibly […] frustrated with all that was going on in the hotel (it was Saturday night, they had a large group and a wedding reception going on, I think). The room looked fine - until I pulled out my foam roller on the floor to work on my leg muscles and noticed tiny pieces of hair and dust embedded all over the carpet. Bathroom lighting was very poor - it didn't bother me since I wasn't worried about my appearance on marathon morning except to make sure my shirt is not on backward and my hair is up on ponytail, but if I were going to some function, it would have been a concern. Finally, I get a call from another guest at 12:30am (note, I have to get up at 4am and run 26.2 miles starting at 7am) mistaking my room for he and his buddy's room and cursing me out, with profanity, for putting "Do Not Disturb" sign on my door, and hanging up without apologizing when he realized his mistake. Had the front desk attendance asked me how my stay was when I checked out at 5am, I would have relayed this little detail, but he didn't - and at that point, I didn't care enough to take the time. When we checked in there was a single person at the front desk and he seemed frazzled, being that there was more than one person who wanted to check in at the same time. I went to attend a portion of a conference and had booked two rooms with two double beds. Due to late check outs of other guest our rooms were not ready. When we were checked in one room was clean and fresh but the other room was not. They moved my friends to another room that was cleaned appropriately. I expected a wait for my car at checkout since everyone else was checking out as well, but an hour is just a bit unacceptable to me. And then to have to go down the drive to get my car and inch it up to the door in slow moving traffic to load our luggage was more than a notion after waiting so long for the car.
