For some odd reason the room was a bit warm. We had to run the fan all night long and even then, it was still warm in the room. Otherwise, all of the other amenties and services were outstanding.

Room is clean, well decorated and maintained but the centralized heating system made the room too hot, so we borrowed an electric fan to cool the room down. Location is good with shuttle bus services to Kyoto station every 15 minutes. Staff is polite and they speak English. They provided excellent service. Mr. Tamura at Front Desk is a responsible staff […] and he handled all our requests promptly (i.e. arranged to change the room, helped us to make reservation for dinner and local tour, etc). The hotel is OK. The location is good if you want to be close to the train station but it is far from the main turist areas, in particular if you want to go out at night this is not the place to stay.

Stayed here in Sept./Oct. 2012 for 7 nights. Reserved a junior suite through Hotels.com. Was given a room on the 7th floor but asked for a room on a higher floor and was upgraded to a suite on the 10th floor (highest floor). The room was nice since the living room as Japanese style and the bed was Western style. Room was clean and spacious. The bathroom […] was huge with the tub in the shower area which made bathing the little ones nice. The hotel is shaped like a 'T' where the top of the 'T' is parallel with the railroad tracks. I would suggest getting a room away from the tracks as it might be noisy. Also, although our room was a non-smoking room, it was on a smoking floor so from time to time, I could smell some second hand smoke. A towel at the door stopped the problem. There is nothing great around the area but they do have a free shuttle to Kyoto station where you can catch a train to your destination. The shuttle runs every 15 minutes. There is also a super market in the mall nearby (10 min. walk) where you can buy some breakfast items if needed. Breakfast buffet walk o.k. but didn't eat there twice. Tried both Japanese restaurants in the basement and they were good but overpriced in my opinion (probably because the Yen is strong compared to the USD). Also tried the pool with my daughter and that was nice since we were the only ones as they charge for each use. Read more

Very good hotel, minutes away from Kyoto station by foot or free regular shuttle bus: drop-off/pick-up at station is adjacent to Shinkasen entry for ease with bags, drop-off/pick-up is also adjacent to mall of restaurants in the railway station. Hotel staff keen to please. Rooms very good. An easy, convenient, and satisfying stay.

We initially had an 'issue' with a blinking light in the ceiling that wouldn't allow us to sleep. At 2:30 AM my husband stood on a chair and removed the defective bulb. In the AM I tactfully spoke to the manager about our lack of sleep and he upgraded us to a fabulously huge two room suite. Way to go! That's how you treat your customers.

We had a triple room, and it had plenty of room for the three of us. The restaurants in the hotel is expensive. Take the 3-5 minute shuttle bus or 7 minute walk back to Kyoto station for cheap eats and shopping. Even though they have a pool, it costs 2,000 yen to use it. Hotel room and staff was great.

Close to Kyoto Station, the hotel is quite large. The rooms were larger than our hotel in Tokyo, and the beds very comfortable. We stayed 4 nights at the Righa Royal. It is clean, convenient, and well maintained. Typically, the beds are not ultra comfortable, although in our stay in Japan we learned to expect this. We had 3 in the room (2 double beds and one sleeper sofa bed) and it was not cramped. The bathroom is very spacious for a Japanese hotel. We stayed at this hotel with our 16 and 13 year olds for two nights in April 2012. Typical of the Japanese, the room was very clean and well appointed. It was spacious with a nice sized bathroom---especially for Japan! Tea was included, but in-room coffee cost extra. The restaurant for breakfast was very crowded with tour groups, and very expensive […] if you didnt have the breakfast included in your room charge. It was probably a questionable version of Western breakfast at best. Much better to go to Kyoto Station where the quality of choices was huge and best quality. Walking there is fine if you are in good health and not carrying suitcases. (It involves some stairs on bridges) The hotel does provide a free shuttle to the station every 15 min.. The biggest downside to this hotel, actually was the location. Aside from Kyoto station and a couple of temples (not on the must-see list), it was a $20 taxi ride to the Gion/Kiyomizu Temple/Pontocho areas which we discovered is where you want to be when you are touring & shopping. This inconvenience was underscored by the fact that we had just spent two nights in a very well located hotel--the Kyoto Royal. All other amenities were very similar otherwise. Read more

Big hotel with all facilities about a 5-10 min walk from main Kiyoto train/subway station in a mostly commercial area. Very clean, very well equipped rooms, rooms decent sized for a Japanese tourist/business hotel. This is a lovely hotel. Location is excellent, very close to JR train line. They offer a free shuttle from the train station. Deluxe Rooms are clean and spacious. Walking distance to Higashi Honwangji Temple. Also walking distance to great shopping plaza Aeon.

The room we stayed is newly renovated and is very clean. Lots of restaurants are near the Kyoto JR station, which means ~5 -10 minutes of walk! Hotel shuttle is until 9pm.

The hotel was excellent except that there was no WiFi access in the hotel room or lobby. I only travel with an iPad now so the wired internet connection in the room was of no use. It isn't an issue of cost, it's really just access.

This hotel was a short walk to Kyoto Station where we could conveniently catch a train, bus or taxi to the various tourist spots. This hotel even has a shuttle bus to/from the station so if you have luggage or lots of purchases it is a convenient way to get to the hotel. They need free WI FI! The Rihga Royal treated us well and has very nice rooms, esp. compared to some of the other places I've stayed at while in Japan. The staff was fairly good about our odd-hours laundry requests and currency exchange, but are pretty strict about their rules and hours. We enjoyed our stay here. 1) We were able to check in as early as 12. 2) We are used to Japanese rooms being small. This was my 4th stay at the Rihga Royal Kyoto since 2004, but my first time using their internet service (more on that at the end). The public areas are well maintained, if somewhat dated; my room was worn looking - the wood finishes were wearing off, the furniture was "well-used". Cleanliness standards are still high throughout the hotel, although […] the housekeeping staff is slower than in the past, taking most of the day to complete the part of the floor I was on. The location is convenient to Kyoto Station - it's a 7 minute walk or a five minute ride on the complimentary shuttle, which lets you off on the side of the station nearest the Shinkansen bullet train tracks (there's also a subway entrance there, if you know where to look). The hotel's internet service is poor. Not only do they charge you for internet, their system is balky and user-unfriendly. Often I had to restart my laptop several times before the server would recognize I was still within the 24 hour period I'd paid for. Keep a record of when your 24 hours begins - otherwise you could end up being billed twice for the same period, simply because the system often defaults to the "purchase" screen when it shouldn't. Also, the system is "optimized" for internet Explorer and Netscape; I've a Mac - I could not access the system directly using Safari. I had to launch Firefox first, then when it was accepted by the system, I could launch Safari. Quite a waste of time and effort, especially given the price they charge. Read more

Nice hotel, good location near Kyoto station. It's a 5-8 minute walk or you can take the free shuttle that departs every 15 minutes. Rooms are nice, comfortable and clean. We got a good discount due to a sale, if we had payed full price it would have been a little disappointing but Kyoto is not cheap.

The Rihga Royal is very well situated if you arrive by train, a eight-minute walk from the station (there is a courtesy bus though if you can't walk eight minutes Kyoto is hardly the place to be visiting, let alone nearby Nara). This was made much easier with their shuttle which makes a round trip every 15 minutes. Bathroom was small. Decor outdated. The room was hot, the air-con did not seem to cool the room. The air-con was turned off by staff when we went out during the day and we then returned to a very hot room to sleep in.
