A very small place, but comfortable and cute. Staff was extremely helpful. Only a 5-minute walk from Subway. In a nice neighborhood, with lots of interesting activities at night (street vendors, food stalls, etc.). Most tourists will probably never see the poverty-stricken living conditions of people off the alleyways behind the main streets, but it's there if you look for it.

This hotel was very roomy and clean. Close to the Olympic Park. Easy to get to from the Airport. Well located to see many of the tourist spots in Beijing.

The staff at Sha Tan hotel is exceptional. I had no trouble adjusting my reservations and tours by phone in advance and even received a personal note from the day staff when I arrived late. I didn't have any meals so I can't comment on that, it is difficult for Taxis to find but I usually stay in that area so I anticipated that. If you aren't familiar with the area you might want to request that the hotel send you instructions on how to reach their location from the North end of the Forbidden City in Chinese so the taxi driver can read them. The pillow top mattresses were an amazing change from the usual hotel beds in China, my only complaint about the hotel is that they can't do foreign exchange but the nearby ICBC can take care of that. Along the main road that crosses the North gate of the Forbidden City (walk the opposite direction) you'll find a string of art supply stores, a great art museum and a little shop with fantastic wool and other yarns to bring home for your knitting friends. The small street the hotel is on has a lot of local flavor.

The hotel was beautiful nicely decorated, giving a sense of the "hutongs" but with more comfort. It had an elegant courtyard, and the rooms were very comfortable. It was located down a narrow alley way, but that provided authenticity to the experience since the hutongs are all built off of similar roads.

Traditional Chinese pagoda gates mark the entrance to The Peninsula Beijing, located in Beijing, China. This luxury hotel stands within the Forbidden City cultural district and is positioned adjacent to the Wangfujing shopping district.
Hotel Features.
The hotel's marble-clad lobby is bathed in subtle natural light that illuminates a central fountain. Hotel dining options include Jing which is connected to the lobby by a glass-enclosed circular staircase. Three open kitchens serve European and Asian fare. A glass cellar holds 1,400 bottles of fine wines. Huang Ting displays 200-year-old stone posts recovered from a former Suzhou nobleman's courtyard. This dining venue features Cantonese fare and dim sum specialties. The Lobby bar hosts afternoon teas, presents live music, and serves a selection of cocktails. A 427-square-meter fitness center contains treadmills, a stair machine and elliptical bicycles, all outfitted with LCD televisions. Jing - Connected to the lobby by glass-enclosed circular staircase. Three open kitchens serve Western and Asian food amid a contemporary backdrop generated by orange pillars, dark brown furnishings, and circular curtain of red-glass Chinese lanterns. Glass wine cellar holds 1,400 bottles. Buffet spreads for breakfast, lunch, and dinner complement à la carte menu. Three semi-private rooms are cordoned by curtains, and one private room is available for up to 10. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Huang Ting - Stone posts from a 200-year-old Suzhou mansion set the stage for this Cantonese restaurant fashioned after a Chinese noble courtyard. Antique wooden lattice screens and hanging Chinese lanterns match the Ming dynasty-style chairs. Separate tea area with three tables, traditional Chinese tea pots in a 250-year-old stand, and antique bird cages. Dim sum specialties offered during lunch and on weekends. Three private rooms and three semi-private rooms are available. Open for lunch and dinner.
The Lobby - Lobby lounge has selection of cocktail drinks, coffee, and tea. Afternoon tea served daily from mid-afternoon till evening. Live evening music. Clusters of coffee tables and upholstered chairs complemented by bar with several additional seats. Open from early morning till past midnight.
The 427-square-meter (4,600-square-foot) fitness center has treadmills, stair machine, elliptical bicycle, and free-weights area. The machines have individual LCD TVs. Three personal trainers are on site, and additional instructors can be outsourced upon request for aerobics, Pilates, and yoga. Locker, steam, and sauna rooms are also available. Two massage rooms offer several treatments such as therapeutic aroma massage, sports massage, Chinese pressure point, head and shoulder massage, foot reflexology, and therapeutic back scraping and cupping. The heated 18-meter rectangular pool on the third floor is encased by full-length glass windows, letting in natural light all around. Deck chairs surround the pool, and a bar counter serves drinks to pool users.

An historical district, Dongcheng is home to a concentration of major sights and treasures including Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City (Palace Museum). To the south, discover Wangfujing Street, a famous shopping boulevard that sees mostly foot traffic only. Here, more than 200 old Beijing brands still reign supreme including the Wuyutai Tea House and Shengxifu hat store.

"HORRIBLE AIR!"
The worst thing about this hotel is the most significant reason NOT to stay there: terrible air! Though we were on a non smoking floor the air in our room almost constantly smelled of cigarette smoke. In retrospect we should have changed hotels once we detected the problem. OR we should have heeded the comments of previous guests who complained of the […] same problem and not reserved there to begin with. We detected cig smell in our first room, which we had to switch due to a different malfunction in the room, but we thought the cig smell was specific to that room. Our 2nd room happened to smell fine when we moved into it, but that was temporary. Especially with the pollution outside in Beijing you EXPECT a top hotel to provide air filtration inside. Not so with the Peninsula. Steer clear if you're not a smoker. Read more

"Disappointed"
Does not live up to the brand - Peninsula. Service not up to par with other Peninsula hotels and hotel is dated. Still 4+, but not 5+ as most Peninsula properties are.
"Good Hotel for Business, very central"
Stayed 9 days for Business. Good room, well maintained. The hotel itself is not as new as other places in Beijing but the condition of everything is excellent. Very good restaurant, quite an Oasis when you get tired of Chinese food. Only issue was undergoing construction in one of the boutiques downstairs, which was bothersome. (Noise, smell). The […] hotel did never mention the inconvenience and mostly pretended it was not happening. It was not too bad, though and they did try to contain the construction site well. "Peninsula Hotel Beijing"
My favorite hotel in Beijng. Close to Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Wangfuging shopping street. Excellent service to detail by a staff fluent in English. An example of detail--I left a book on the nighttable and after my room was cleaned they left a bookmark on the book. Not a big deal, but indicative of the attention they pay to your comfort. We just spent four wonderful days at this hotel. The hotel was gorgeous, the room very comfortable and beautiful and clean. The staff was very friendly and extremely accomodating and helpful. And the surrounding shopping area was very convenient. We spent one day walking to Tiennamen Square and shopping, so this was well appreciated. "Did not meet expectation"
We flew directly from US to Beijing and were exhausted by the time we got there around 4pm. We couldn't check into our hotel room until 6pm. The reason given to us was that the guests stayed in our hotel room checked out really late and the room wasn't ready. They told us to hang out at the bar but didn't offer to pay for anything. Plus, everything […] was over-priced. Breakfast is $50 per person per meal. All the drinks were expensive. Additionally, the air inside the hotel was nasty (more like moldy smell). We got non-smoking room yet we still can smell smoke. The room size was smaller than expected although they are all functional. "Difficult to get Taxi from this location."
Peninsula Beijing is not as grant as I hoped. It is no better than a Renaissance or a Hilton. I am not impressed by the lobby or the pool. The ground floor is filled with lux brand stores with few customers. There are only a few chairs available to sit if you don't buy a drink in the lobby area. Theorectically, it is a good location, close to Forbidden […] City and Wangfujing (shopping center). But getting a taxi is difficult because lots of taxi drivers do not like the traffic congestions in the area. Some staff struggle with English, but there are Indian staff on-site during daytime to help. Overall, I will not give a 5 star. I think the hotel will have trouble competing in the future because a Waldoff is being built down the street. Read more

The Peninsula is a beautiful hotel and we had a spacious suite, however, we requested a nonsmoking room and even though we were on a non-smoking floor, the HVAC system brought in very strong cigarette fumes -- it was like living in an ashtray -- they did not have a comparable room to move us too, so we had to change hotels. But check your bill---they will put local phone calls on the bill and then refuse to take them off until you show them the Winter rate special includes them. "Peninsula Beijing--Ideal location & great staff"
I knew little of travel in Beijing and spoke no Chinese so the Peninsula was an fantastic choice for my travel. The location close to Tiananmen Square was ideal and the hotel staff spoke impeccable English. Additionally the concierge staff went above and beyond with my every need including booking flights on future travel throughout China. Additionally […] the availability of private tours through the hotel made my trip far more enjoyable than had I booked more traditional group tours. The restaurants in the hotel were also first rate which provided excellent alternatives to dining out after a long day. For travel to Beijing, the Peninsula lived up to its rating and I would definitely stay here again on a return to China. Read more

Spent 3 days at this hotel after a business trip and found it to be top notch in every way. Everyone is very professional, service is cordial and make you feel they are sincerly happy you are staying at the Peninsula. A bit pricy but well worth the addtional cost.

Service outstanding, room beautiful and comfortable, free internet. I would not spend the extra $45 per person for buffet breakfast -- nothing special. The cantonese restaurant in the hotel, Huang Ting is extraordinary. The dim sum weekend brunch is exquisite and affordable.

"Beautiful hotel, mediocre service"
If this is your first time in Beijing, this could be a good choice. It is close to the Forbidden City and other sights. The service is nowhere near what I have come to expect from 5 star hotels.

We stayed 3 nights at the hotel and enjoyed every minute of our stay. Its very convenient, close to numerous sights, easy to get around. The overall facilities were top notch.
