The Royal York is a charming, well-maintained hotel conveniently located immediately next to the main York train station and within a ten or fifteen minute walk from downtown, the Minster, the National Train Museum, and other sightseeing destinations. Pro: - Hotel staff were pleasant and efficient. - Rooms were clean, relatively quiet, and quickly […] serviced. - Nicely maintained facilities, and very convenient to downtown. Con: - Packages booked through Expedia list "Free High-Speed Internet", but this is incorrect. There is (wired only) limited internet access via Ethernet cables in the rooms. It's available in half-hour increments with limited bandwidth (or you can pay extra - about $25/day for a single device - for unlimited access). There is no wireless access. This would have been a deal-breaker for us had we known about it ahead of time on our week-long business trip. - The rooms were exceptionally warm, even in fall weather when it was about 70F in the warmest part of the day. Windows would not open more than 4 inches, and the supplied fan ran on a timer that maxed out at 120 minutes. - Hotel restaurant was vastly overpriced compared to surrounding locations. Breakfast is not included in packages booked through Expedia. - Some rooms face the hotel supply and loading area for taxis located next to the train station. They come and start taking out recycling and doing deliveries around 6:00am. You *will* we woken up if you are placed on this side of the hotel. Read more

My only real complaint about this hotel is that it has no air conditioning (which is typical), but there were no fans provided and the only bedding was a sheet/comforter combination that just made things worse. The Royal York Hotel is in a great location, within walking distance to many York sights. York Minster is only a 15 minute walk across the river and the Shambles is also nearby. It's fair to say that this Victorian hotel in terms of building condition has probably seen better days. Yet I think it's an absolutely beautiful hotel in a superb location with beautiful grounds, right next to the station. The rooms are large and good value for money though some of the furniture is a little chipped. We stayed on a friday night for a romantic get away. I wanted it to be special, but can honestly say that the hotel wasn't special in the slightest. dissapointed about the parking fees that were not included or mentioned when booking! The hotel is a bit outdated and shabby around the edges and doesn't live up to the name ROYAL hotel! However the beds are so comfy, the manner and service of the staff especially Barr staff were very good! The turn around and small details in the house keeping service […] I.e towels, bed, and to the point of toilet paper folding. Hotel beautiful, room lovely and clean but we couldn't believe there was NO HEATING in our room. The garden wing, room 5308. We had to ask for a heater which we had to keep on all night to keep warm as it was a really cold night. Also the first hotel that didn't have an extra blanket in the wardrobe. Good location, helpful staff. On the down side we should have selected a garden view room since our room had only one small corner window and overlooked a derelict railway roof. Bar area smelled of chlorine (from swimming pool beneath) and drinks were overpriced. Excellent breakfast. Super place to stay if you are sightseeing.

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and so we could spend a bit of quality time together, I asked for a Victorian style room but for some reason they gave us a modern one (despite me emailing and calling on the morning of our stay) however, the lady there couldn't have been more helpful, she apologised for the mix up and sorted us a beautiful […] room very quickly and gave us some complimentary drinks whilst it was being prepared. The bar staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for us, especially Andrew who was bright and friendly throughout our stay. Every morning we were greeted with a smile at breakfast and staff couldn't do enough to help. The hotel itself is really beautiful and has spa facilities too. The location couldn't be any more perfect (right next to the train station) and is close to all attractions, we walked everywhere quite easily. I'd highly recommend this hotel and will visit again! very disappointing, cold / non heated haulways, the last room at the wing (5210 with a shocking view). Sauna and Pool Area very dirty, check out took a very long time and the person at the bar on day of check in was apparently in a bad mood. Empty glasses on our Bar table etc ! Hotel photos very impressive. Foyer, Reception really nice. Restaurant for breakfast could be really impressive, but needs a revamp. Breakfast itself was quite good value. The hotel was somewhat tired and the bed seemed to have been in use since well before the turn of the century ( the 21st rather than the 20th, probably). When we booked this hotel we were lead to believe we had booked a room in a four star hotel, a beautiful old building with wonderful period features...what we actually got was a room in the 'garden wing'. This building also housed the events/conference hall was on a par with a newly built Premier Inn. We were so far away from the main hotel that the […] trek to the hotel's facilities hardly seemed worth it. Not only that but our particular room was on a -1 level which meant our 'garden room' was below the street level and all that we could see was the Royal Mail sorting office. The room was dark and there was a strong smell of sewage. I am so disappointed to have payed that amount of money to get the equivalent of a room in a Premier Inn. I would have actually preferred to have stayed there. The rest of the hotel seemed much in need of a serious upgrade. The swimming pool did not look enticing and the smell of chlorine was overpowering. The hotel staff were pleasant enough but young and not what I expect from a four star hotel. The only saving grace was the hotels position which was excellent. In future I will be extremely careful when booking a four star room on a website like this. Read more

The spa area will now be nice and fresh as it was refurbished whilst we were there. At the time of booking we weren't told that it would be closed, so the two days parking charge (£12) was waived. The staff were very helpful.
