Mercure Manchester Norton Grange Hotel and Spa - Manchester (and vicinity)

Having always used the local DeVere vhotels when i was up on business, i booked to stay at Norton Grange. Whilst it lacks the contempory feel of the DeVere, the rooms were more than adequate clean/comfortable), the bar food good and the staff friendlier. The icing on the cake was the price - a nice saving over DeVere this suits both me and the profit […] share scheme my company operates!!!! Thanks for a nice stay - the only criticism (and its a small one), is that the gym is too warm when on the rowing or running machines, this is more of a personal thing though and it wont stop me using this hotel again. I found the Norton Grange a little tired and in need of an upgrade. The room allocated was at one time a shared or joined room and a poorly insulated door confirmed the neighbouring occupants bathroom on the other side. Everything worked and my bathroom was bang up to date but showed signs of flaking paint. The biggest negative for me was the poor internet […] connection in the room (nneded for business). Fortunately it was ok in the bar but I would have preferred the privacy of working in my room. The biggest plus was the food which was excellent. The Casterbridge steak was the best I have had in years and a morning breakfast spread was excellent with a wide choice of fruit, cereal and pastries together with a cooked buffet with choice of eggs that put some 5* hotels to shame. Me and my girlfriend were amazed at the quality and service we got for the price paid. The staff were friendly, the hotel was amazing... note to all staying here tho, the pool and spa = amazing, but even tho the waitresses at the restaurant did their best to meet our needs, the food was not at the standard I was expecting in comparison to the high standards […] of the rest of the hotel. The hotel is an average hotel, not run down but not deluxe. The condition of room 208 was questionable, the double glazed window didn't seal correctly and delivered an continual breeze into the room along with the sound of traffic from the nearby road. The wardrobe was missing a mirrored door. the shower screen was missing the rubber seal from the bottom […] of the door and as a result the bathroom flooded when you had a shower. I have been staying in this hotel for the best part of two years and it continues to disappoint. This most recent stay was the most depressing of the lot and I'm completely done with the place. If you're on the ground floor you have to endure cleaning staff rattling up and down the corridor from 530am, night staff setting up meeting rooms and cleaning […] function rooms at 2am. On the road side of the hotel with a broken window that won't close you can also guarantee no sleep. Requests only to stay on the third floor on the car park side are ignored and following two nights in the old part of the hotel with paper thin walls I'm done. On the positive side the staff, despite being harried and probably on minimum wage, are never less than polite and some of them exceptionally warm and welcoming (particularly the restaurant staff). The wi-fi is free and the food is always good (especially the burger and chips or the steaks), the wine selection excellent and breakfast well above average...however, I can stay at the budget hotel down the road and pop in for dinner...which is what I shall be doing from now on. The assessable room allocated was difficult to use, wc very close to sink, step in bath and poorly fitted shower was impossible for a disabled person to use. The Spa facility made up for this as the disabled room was very good.

A clean normal hotel. Just a few points though. This hotel does not offer bathrobes or drinks etc as described online. they don't do single duvets so if your in a single bed you either get a double duvet or a folded blanket wrapped in bed sheets. On the other hand breakfast was superb. If I am in the area again will stay there again.

From the outside the hotel looks really great. When you go inside, it's..... not dirty or shabby, bust a bit 'sad' looking. The reception is a bit gloomy; the area isn't inviting, doesn't make you feel welcome - although the staff are very friendly and they do make you feel very welcome. My room was very comfortable - but I had to have the window open […] as there was no air-conditioner, which wouldn't have been a problem except my room overlooked the main road, so was a bit noisey early evening and first thing in the morning. Food was lovely in the evening, can't fault it - breakfast, again was a bit of a let-down. Orange juice had run out, the orange and grapefruit segments had started to ferment and were fizzy when I tasted them. Again, these things were addressed straight away and I received numerous apologies - cannot fault the staff for their helpfulness and friendliness. Would I stay here again? the room was pleasantly spacious and clean, ensuite the same though the shower head could not be raised. One bedside lamp did not work . The room of one of our party was not made up at all on the second day of our stay. Initial service on reception was not welcoming. Very little information was forthcoming and no enquiry as to whether any help with […] luggage etc was required - the manager seemed less accommodating than some of his staff. On our second night in the hotel a fight broke out in the reception area (it would seem that the altercation arose between two women at a wedding reception that was taking place and then escalated to the point where the police being called) and the bar was closed before our order for tea arrived. Eventually, the tea order was reluctantly fulfilled. The breakfasts were good with a wide selection, though no coffee/teas refills were offered, only 3 tiny slabs of butter were provided on a table for four and there were no teaspoons. The final straw was when another couple in our party was charged, above the rate specified on the breakfast menu, for breakfasts which had already been paid for in advance when the room booking was made. Overall therefore, although I can see that it has potential, I would not recommend this hotel except for the Spa which was first class. Read more

For it's 4 star rating this hotel does not meet the expected requirements to meet this grade with overall facilities pretty average. It was however on a number of smaller issues that contributed to an disappointing stay. Establishing that the TV in my room was missing certain channels that were supposed to be there I had to call reception 4 times over […] a period of 45 minutes before someone came to my room to investigate. Clearly with no knowledge of how to solve the problem they returned with another member of staff who had no greater knowledge of how to solve this issue and although they were apologetic and offered me a free drink, they could not meet my request to obtain a different TV in orderr for me to watch the programme I was missing. On the following morning at breakast, myself and other guets had to wait for eggs to arrive at the hot buffet in the middle of service and then when they did arrive, a further wait to obtain glasses for juice. Later at checkout they was a long queue and only one member of staff at peak check out time. For a hotel on a major route into Manchester it was a disappointing experience. Read more

The breakfast was the best thing about my stay! The first room they gave me had a brick wall as the view from the window. Having asked for a better view I got the sound of the main roads & M62 as a background track to my stay. There's more ... Towels that were aged and therefore gave you a good exfoliation , a shower that had v little flow and a lift […] that went clunk clunk clunk. However the views outside were good and the location handy for business. But as my other half said - 'we won't be returning for a leisure trip then?' The answer was a most definite 'NO.' Read more

Third time I have stopped here. First time was when it was a Macdonald hotel and it was fantastic. Returned when it had first been taken over by Accor. A very friendly hotel the reception staff, restaurant staff were extremely friendly and polite as were the Spa staff. We were disappointed on arrive at the limited swim time for children that really did not fit in with our visit/stay. Saying that the staff allowed my son and his two cousins with an adult to have an hour swim between 10.00 & 11.00am. […] The childrens swim time restrictions are pretty random either really earlier or right in the middle of the afternoon, but only one session a day I think the afternoon swim is weekends and the early swim weekdays or the other way round. The Hot tub area was ideal and plenty big enough what a treat. My overall opinion is it is certainly not a hotel for children, but great for a relaxing getaway without children. The only complaint I had and raised was that a breakfast tray was left right by the lift all day, that evening I did reluctantly raise it with reception after being tempted to bring it down myself! Unfortunately the tray was still there when we left at 10.50am the following day some 24 hours later, with a nice black over ripe banana. All said a nice clean hotel (generally) with friendly staff and a pleasant atmosphere. Little bit on the noisy side with the room doors. Read more

We went to the hotel to celebrate my brother's 50th birthday because if it's position near but not next to the M62. The rooms are very confortable and the leisure facilites and food are great. Best of all though is the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.

The Mercure is a good 4* hotel, with ample size bedrooms and good facilities, just outside Rochdale centre. The spa and swimming pool is a bonus too. I ate in the bistro/bar most evenings as I was travelling by myself, and the food was very good. Some of the staff, though, need training in customer service. A perfectly acceptable hotel - good food, nice bar but distinctly average service and just smacks of being a bit tired in places. Speaker in the dining room struggling to churn out dated piano music during evening meal and staff in the bar more interested in discussing their personal lives than serving customers. The room was immaculately tidy, the shower worked well and the presence of an iron and ironing board in the room is always handy when away working. The food was good - OK steak and ale pie one night and fantastic lamb shank the next. Mecure Norton Grange The information given on the booking sheet (address wise) was incorrect We were here for 1 night for work, after hotel hopping every day you just want to get to your hotel with no problems. The postcode was wrong, I tried to find the hotel info on my phone internet, where I saw a review (someone had the same problem) and they […] wrote the correct postcode down ….. This was wrong... Eventually after driving round miles away from the hotel we got through over the phone and given the correct (this was correct) postcode. It was so far from any of the postcodes we had seen on the review or the one given by hotels.com It was such a hot day and long day we made it. The staff we pleasant and helpful , the meal in the hotel was nice but a little over priced for what it was, quiet hotel in the country side , room was very impressive , clean , up to date , infact the whole hotel was immaculate. In the morning we woke to get ready and rush off to work to find the kettle in the room didn’t work. We called reception they sent one up 20 mins later as we were leaving so we told the lady thanks but we haven’t time now. We explained this to reception who offered for the restaurant to fill our flask with coffee. If we were having a lazy day there would have been no issue with waiting for the kettle but when you have to get to work little things like this hinder and start the day off badly Oh the correct postcode we used for our sat nav was actually M24 2UV Read more

We enjoyed our stay at the hotel, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was very good. The location of the hotel was key for us as you were just off of the motorway network giving you quick access to Manchester and the surrounding areas. I would definitely stay there again.

Dieses Hotel bietet ehemaligen Luxus zum Standarthotelpreis. Ein sehr schönes großes Zimmer mit Dusche und Badewanne und guten Betten. Leider konnten wir nicht im Hotel zu Abend essen, da das Restaurant ausgebucht war und in der Bar wurden nur Snacks gereicht. Wir hatten eine Art Antipasti-Teller, der schön hergerichtet war. Die Bar war sehr gemütlich, […] EIn weiterer Nachteil war, dass ich extra bei Hotels.com angerufen habe, um nachzufragen, ob für den Wellnessbereich eine Gebühr entrichten ist und unter welchen Konditionen er benutzbar ist, da ich entsprechende Bemerkungen in den Bewertungen gelesen hatte. Die Mitarbeiterin informierte sich und erzählte mir dann, der Wellnessbereich sei für meinen Aufenthalt kostenlos und nutzbar. leider war dem nicht so. Denn um 19:00 Uhr schloss der Wellnessbereich. Mir wurde eine Nutzung ab 7 Uhr morgens angeboten, doch konnte ich nur den Pool benutzen, da die Sauna um 8:30 Uhr noch nicht heiß war.
