Fairly nice hotel with friendly staff. Basic room a little small but clean. the mattresses were a little lumpy. Lovely grounds and conveniently locatedGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"New owners need to invest fast !!!"
The hotel is in bad shape and desperately needs investment it looks to me like the new owners are first of all chasing the wedding market ,but our rooms 114 & 115 in the " new block" looked as though they haven't seen a lick of paint since they were built ! poss 30 years ago.The hallway was dim and the carpets just a mess. The room cost us £69 plus £10 […] for breakfast and the Magners was £4.40 a pint yet no one could wipe clean an outside table. three things going for the hotel the staff ,the main dining area was bright poss new carpet & furniture bit still needed painted and the cooked breakfast was excellent .There are better hotels not far away,im afraid it wasn't up to the mark they had their chance and blew it i wont be back. "Nice place to stay"
I liked it, room had a carpet stain and the bed was a bit hard. Had an ironing board, but no iron. The room was next to the staff dining room, so there was a light on all night. I'd stay there again though the beer and the food were both excellent!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"One too many coats of Paint."
The food was out of this world, Hotel itself in tip top condition but it has had one too many coats of paint. Stiff doors, slamming doors through the night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Ideal to tour area"
Excellent hotel at a very good price. Bus service and train service to local areas are frequent and affordable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Hotel looks quite grand and the lounges, dining room etc were lovely but our room was disappointing. The bed was so uncomfortable , no extra blankets and the cleanliness wasn't too good. Hotel in General is crying out for TLC. However the staff were so friendly and efficient so I didn't complain!Genuine Expedia guest review

"Has potential - needs some love and investment"
First the positives. Staff where polite and courteous and very helpful, especially after another guest had damaged my car and driven off without reporting it! The negatives :( on entering my bedroom there was a fusty damp smell similiar to a room that had been aired for some time. The bed was hard and where the two matresses had been pushed togher there […] was about 1/2 inch difference in height, great for stopping a partner coming for a late night cuddle! I was awoken about 6am every morning by very noisy heating system. The decore in the hotel is in need of rennovating, it doesnt look or feel old and classic it feels old and run down. Sunday I arrived excellent welcome Wedding reception on no complaints until later when it seemed everybody in the hotel wanted to pass my room (not quietly) Same again Monday lots of banging doors and banging on doors Tuesday had a good nights sleepGenuine Expedia guest review

"Not all that it should have been"
Kept awake by noisy guest in adjoining bedroom that ran a bath at midnight every night. Then woke up again at 4am by the noisy heating coming on. Did change rooms to avoid the noisy neighbour but second room much smaller. Spa not available at begining of stay and football not available on main tv despite it saying it was in the hotel brochure. "Run down and shoddy!"
Checked into a excecutive room, to be shown to a shoebox sized room with most uncomfortable lumpy old bed I have I felt. Sat on bed waiting for receptionist to come to our room with a key to another room to discover a big toenail on the carpet next to the bed. Hotel reception very scruffy and un inviting, also the area below the staircase where you […] are supposed to chill and have a drink very shoddy and dark. "In Desperate Need Of New Beds!"
I stayed one night in this hotel and was unable to sleep due to the bed. It was like sleeping on a bag of coals. When I asked if I could move rooms, I was told there wasn't any others free. The staff were relatively friendly, but nothing to write home about! The hotel was in a bad state of repair. "A Tired Hotel, in need of some TLC"
Sadly the reviews are right about this hotel. It really is a 3 out of 5. It could be amazing but is in need of a hotel inspector makeover session. The building and grounds are lovey but sadly the hotel is stuck in 1985 and needs a serious re-furb. Also the breakfast was very poor quality and looked as if the eggs had been sitting around of days! The […] evening meal was pretty good but expensive. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Tired, but comfortable with good service"
The hotel looks grand until you walk too far from reception. The rooms are a bit tired, but comfortable enough. Food was ok, but a bit pricey. Swimming pool is tiny - 3 strokes and you'd smack your head on the other side. Located about 1 1/2 mile from the station. Easy walk, however plenty of taxi's in the station rank. "Comfortable hotel in an easy access position."
All staff very helpful. The restaurant was clean and service was good. Easy access to car parks. Delighted that our dog could stay as well. We may return next year.Genuine Expedia guest review
Hotel was a great location for my business needs and the rooms were clean and tidy but I did think it was a bit expensive for what you got and breakfast was not included and very expensive for a buffet style and I'm afraid my dinner was very poor standard and tasteless.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
2 star at best, don't be fooled by the long drive and Georgian appended if the main building. The majority of the hotel is tired and in need of a revamp. The staff are not welcoming and seem uninterested. My suggestion would be to find another hotel, thus just doesn't hit the mark.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location, exceptional value"
Lovely hotel, located within a 15/20 minute walk into Darlington town centre and close to A1. Well equiped rooms, although carpets could do with a clean. Another slight bug-bare is that rooms are serviced daily and there doesn't appear to be a "do not disturb/ clean" option. Haven't eaten in the restaurant or bar, but it always looks busy.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Fish for breakfast?"
Hotel looks grander from the outside than the reality of the interior, however the staff are very friendly and make the most of what they have on offer. The natives must prefer a fry-up in the morning since neither the haddock nor the kippers on the breakfast menu were available. That said, the black pudding was very good and I'd certainly use this […] hotel again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Fantastic service and excellent rooms"
Fantastic hotel! We had read so many poor reviews about the hotel on trip advisor about the hotel being tired and worn out and so were apprehensive about our forthcoming stay. But it is not at all! Ok, so the food was not great (apart from breakfast, which was very good), and neither were the public toilets, BUT our rooms were clean, service was fantastic […] and they were so kind to quickly let us have two interlinking executive rooms as soon as they saw that we had children who could not stay in separate rooms all by themselves (we had booked only one executive and one standard room). Great rooms as well. Nothing tatty or leaking or mouldy. Good, plush decor throughout. We will definitely be returning in Summer. Really good value for money. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Could be really good!"
Nice hotel in golf course setting. Good area. Exec rooms good. Although breakfast was good, the hotel was let down by inconsistent quality of food at dinner . Lack of attention to detail as part of the wedding reception was held in grounds and although grass had been cut, the cuttings had not been cleared.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Fine for overnight stay"
I booked this while down to attend an event, and it was perfectly reasonable for a one nighter. One point - although not far from the centre, it does feel like it is in the middle of the countryside, making it quite difficult to find in the dark!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Room Quality varies too much"
for the 1st night I was given a cheap room which was in a smelly corridor. I did not want to stay in it another night & was shown another through a labyrinth of passages that reeked of undefined smells, which I pointed out to the room clerk. I finally got the room at the front of the Hotel which was really beautiful. So the management should (1) smarten […] up the sub-standard cheaper rooms or (2) make the prices differences absolutely clear to the guest.(I would ahve expected since I smpent 1 nt in the smelly part NOT to have been charged extra for the new room. Of course for the nicer room I had to pay more. But that's not the point. If your hotel professes a certain standard the difference should not be that you get a room cheap in a smelly part of the hotel or pay more and stay in a non smelly part. I am an ex Hilton International Hotel Sales Director with world wide travel experiance & really KNOW what I'm on about. This should not happen. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"A Groupon Offer"
07/08/14 sue1812 Stroud, United Kingdom
We had a Bed, Breakfast and Dinner package through a Groupn Offer which was a fantastic deal and we felt that it was good value for the money. The hotel is dated and in need of some TLC but our room was excellent and also the bathroom. All the staff that we encountered were extremely friendly and helpful. As another reviwer has stated, the menus are limited ,even the a la carte. We had the seabass with curly kale. The seabass and potatoes were perfect but the kale was deep fried and to our taste, full of oil. We were pleased that we ordered extra vegetables There was plenty of choice for breakfast. It provided us with a good base enabling us to explore the area and there are some beautiful walks along the Tees Valley from the hotel. Barnard Castle and the museum there are well worth a visit and like Durham it is not too far away. Beautiful countryside within easy reach, as well as the East coast. A bonus is the Spa facilities with extremely reasonable rates for a wide variety of treatments. Sadly the Massage Therapist was on holiday but if it had been available we certainly would have had a massage.
"A weekend at Blackwell Grange"

Blackwell Grange was all we wanted it to be and served our weekend well. Every question on their survey we rated excellent. Everything really was excellent. Arrival at reception you felt welcomed the room was what was wanted large and airy bathroom clean. We will certainly return and would recommend Blackwell Grange for a stay.

Stayed one night. Rooms were clean but dated. Both menu's given had limited choice although food was nice. All the staff were friendly and helpful. I doubt I would make a return visit. Hotel needs a lot of love and attention, which would bring it back to its former glory.

Stayed here for 3 nights, the staff were rude, the pipes kept us awake all night. We had travelled for 5 hours to get here, so to say we were bitterly disappointed was an understatement. We complained & the manager called & said next time we were passing through we could have a free drink?! Would not recommend and won't be travelling here anytime soon.
"Nice peaceful location"

I stayed one night at this hotel and thought it was a very pleasant and peaceful place. The room was clean and more than adequate in size. The staff were pleasant and helpful. Unfortunately I was not able to try the restaurant nor the breakfast but I enjoyed my one night stay.
"Bit Tired But Staff Are Excellent"
07/03/14 Simon M Cambridgeshire
Stayed here one night and was put in one of the cottages. Tucked away from the main hotel it had its own courtyard for parking in. My room was upstairs and to my surprise had a bedroom, bathroom and a small living area with a sofa and an armchair plus a small desk. It had its own YV in there too. The bedroom area was large with lots of closet space. The bathroom, to be honest, looked like it had been tiled by me. And I'm NOT a tiler! Which leads me on to the overall impression of the place. It feels a little old, the carpets have clearly been down a while, not grubby, just outdated. The bar area is dark wood and frilly curtains. They are working on it, you can tell that by the smell of gloss paint and the tell-tale signs of not finished off painted surfaces. Although credit is due for the work being done it gives an impression of not finished all over. The staff were great, check in was painless (although I didn't get my newspaper - not an uncommon problem these days in any hotel). The bar could've done with more than more one person but she did her best. The restaurant staff were really great both in the morning and at breakfast (again, very acceptable even if it was under hot lamps rather than cooked to order). In the evening they had at least two coach parties on top of the regular guests and although we had to wait to get a table reservation, when we were seated the service was first class. The food was pleasantly good for a hotel, well cooked and a good choice. You can mix and match off the room service/bar menu and the full restaurant menu which was very welcome. I have to say I would probably pick a chain over this place if I didn't know what it was going to be like (you know 100% with a chain what you'll get be that good or bad). But now I know this is here, hopefully once the decorating is complete it will earn four stars from me based on its amenities rather than getting bumped up due to the excellent staff.
"Mildew and Poorly Furnished"
07/02/14 Tirpat Ottawa, Canada
We stayed here for one night as part of a Trafalgar tour and I was very disappointed with the room. It smelled of mildew, had no air conditioning, and no toiletries in the bathroom. A call to reception confirmed they did not even have a box of tissues. There was no clock radio and the bathroom had zero counter space. If I had a choice we would have stayed elsewhere. I just don't understand how a hotel like this can earn a 4 star rating. However we had no problem with the very courteous staff or the check in process. As well the WiFi in the room was fair.

This was a last minute booking - a break that included B&B and a two course evening meal. The hotel is in fantastic grounds (two weddings there during our stay) The reception areas are clean and well laid out. Our bedroom was spacious and had everything we needed. We visited the spa/swimming pool and the staff were excellent (this again was included in cost) The evening meal was exceptional as was the service. Breakfast was good but could have been hotter. Fantastic value for money. easy 15 minute work to town centre One disappointing moment - whilst checking out a manager was arguing with a cleaner about a door that had been left open (surely this should be done away from guests) It will not stop us staying again but not acceptable.
"Great rooms, fantastic location, good food but it's the staff that make it!"
06/30/14 Knightwalker2014 Manchester, United Kingdom
I've been using Blackwell Grange in Darlington for business trips for 2 years and I'll continue to do so (hopefully) for many more. The hotel is a ridiculously short drive or walk from the city centre and very close to Durham too. Ideally located the hotel is also set in wonderful grounds and as such is always very quiet whenever I stay. The breakfasts and dinners are delicious, whether it's bar snacks, three course meals or a morning buffet it's always cooked to perfection. The beds and rooms are clean, extremely comfortable and the showers are warm and powerful. But the main reason I keep coming back is how genuine, friendly and professional all the staff are. Nothing is too much trouble and I am always welcomed and assisted with a smile. 11 out of 10!
"Don't believe everything you read"

Just had 3 nights at Blackwell Grange for a wedding. We were very apprehensive after reading some of the reviews. Yes, it is a bit tired and in need of an injection of cash. Yes, our refurbished room had a cracked sink. However, the staff are friendly and welcoming, the gym and pool were absolutely fine, the grounds are stunning and we had an excellent time. The wedding reception was held at the hotel and staff were efficient and accommodating. There were no problems with the bar or staff and the breakfast was lovely and plentiful. Our executive room (240) was spacious and had excellent views of the garden. Our son had a standard room in the hotel annexe (336) and this was perfect for him. Our only suggestions would be better pillows, a mini bar/fridge in the room and ensuring consistent wifi. Without hesitation, we would stay here again, so don't be put off by some of the bad reviews.
