We read many reviews about The Berkeley before deciding to book a room. We were a little apprehension but the hotel was gorgeous. They were in the middle of renovating so there were some little quirks like problems with elevators and the cable being out. But we didn't mind. The room was beautiful and so close to the beach. Also the price at the time was unbeatable.

The hotel leaves much to be desired. No coffee in the rooms (biggest failing), decor was a nightmare, parking is a BIG problem, have to walk sideways between tub and toilet in order to step into shower, faucet in sink so low that there's no room to soap up and rinse face cloth, continental breakfast really lacking in quality. For the price this place was extremely disappointing.

I've stayed at the Berkeley twice. The first time, we had a huge room that had a table, chairs and a couch in it. The second time was a much smaller room, but still nice. The hotel is renovated and is a great choice. Hotel is clean, staff is friendly. Our remote was dead and we went to the front desk and they sent someone up immediately. The beds are really hard but that's about the only negative thing. Location is up and coming, but there isn't much to do around there otherwise. Great if you're seeing a concert at the Stone Pony or Wonderbar as they are literally feet away from the hotel. That's the only reason I go to Asbury Park, but I will continue to stay at the Berkeley whenever I go there.

The location is outstanding. The hotel is trying to be hip, but not quite making it. There was supposed to be free parking, but none was available and the staff provided incorrect info aboutv the meters. The room design is poorly planned - for example you have to step over the toilet to get in the shower. Staff service is motel quality and the free breakfast is only for the desperate. Could be a great hotel, but it has a long way to go. That said, the location can't be beat.

First of all, let me say we loved our room! It was much bigger than expected with two queen size beds and decorated in a very hip style. The price was right too! I thought the lobby was decorated nicely as well. The two complaints I have were the free breakfast and the level of service at the hotel. To be honest, I would rather not have the breakfast and pay a bit less. All it was was coffee and lame danish and bagels. Not good at all! I found the front desk staff not helpful and extremely slow. One person was on the computer and the line was very long. They never even looked up or noticed that the line was forming and people were disgusted with the slow service. Our friends had ordered us champagne which was never delivered to the room! We called and asked several times and they finally brought it up with no glasses!!! I guess if we never called we never would have gotten the champagne. The people at the front desk also told us the pool was open when it wasn't.

In an effort to save the client a few bucks I found what I thought was an affordable hotel, right near the beach, luck me, right? No. Having no familiarity with NJ I had no idea what Ashbury Park was like. Driving through the neighborhood to get to the hotel is shady. Definitely not a place for a woman traveling alone. Everyone told me not to walk around by myself after dark. This can be difficult because the only parking lot is in the back of the hotel with no entrance to the hotel, so you have to walk all the way around to the front. The heaters hadn't been turned on yet, so I asked for an extra blanket. They told me there was only one person working that night, so I had to come down and get it myself. It felt like a Motel rather than a HOTEL. I wouldn't stay there again.

THe pool was not available, which is a common theme in the reviews we read. We had no problems with the elevators as others have stated. There is a beach walking distance and a great boardwalk however the area/neighborhood is not desirable. THis is a fine place to sleep/shower after a day at the beach...nothing else to do in hotel. If you bring kids, make sure you bring enough to keep them occupied if you are not planning on going to the beach! Some suggestions, maybe a gameroom, complimentary beach pass with 2 night stay? Snack machines. It is old, and true, you can see they are trying, however it seems like a "practice" place for students in the hotel industry.

The Berkeley is a wonderful place to stay! except for the following-the pool is closed until further notice, the pool table is missing over half of the pool balls, one out of the three elevators are broken, the TV is fuzzy, and there are no keys to the safe in your room (I asked the front desk if i could have a key and they told me that they no longer did that-however they did offer to do a baggage claim). Other than these things the hotel is wonderful! if you can ask for a room ending in 42, for instance 442 -the 4th floor- or 542 -on the 5th- but no lower than the 4th floor, these rooms are placed in just the right spot for a romantic view of the beach (all the rooms have the same rate so go ahead and ask ;) ). the bathrooms are all new and very clean, and the soap provided smells like mint! The rest of the living/sleeping area feels welcoming and is well kept. Overall I would recommend this hotel very highly. For the price you can't beet it!! P.S. Asbury has gotten better over the past few years :) P.P.S There are fire works on the beach in front of the hotel every Wednesday at 9 PM! Until September!

The Berkeley is a great hotel for the price. Just a short walk to the boardwalk and beach. The staff were friendly and always smiling! Our room was clean and comfortable. The air conditioning worked great! Our needs were met in a timely manner. You can't expect staff to rush to your room with towels or what not immediately. They all work very hard and have alot to do. Yes, there is not adequate "free parking" but the paid parking is only 50 cents an hour from 9am to 9pm. That's only $3!!! It's free 9pm to 9am, and it is right in front of the hotel. We gladly paid the parking fee, no big deal. Yes, the elevators were slow, but hey.. we are on vaction.. we all need to slow down and relax a little. If anything needs improving, it would be the complimentary breakfast. The staff should be more educated on determining the quality and freshness of the food before making it available to the guests. We will stay at the Berkley again. The hotel was clean , comfortable and safe with a great price!! We almost cancelled our reservations because of all the bad reviews. I'm glad we didn't. Through out the hotel there were improvements related to those reviews. Like a snack shop.... soda machines etc. It seems that the hotel management does read these reviews and attempts to improve on what guests have complained about. Yes, the community is a little run down, but the city is rebuilding. The improvements are evident.

We were at this hotel with four other families for a sporting event our children were participating in. We decided to travel the 25 minutes to be near the ocean. The ocean did not disappoint and our children did enjoy over an hour in the surf the night we arrived. Other situations at this hotel made it very uncomfortable to enjoy with young children. Apparently, it was DIVA Dodgeball weekend, and the behavior of the DIVA's was both inappropriate and disrupting. We could not take our children to the outdoor pool because of the behavior and foul language of the DIVAS. We ordered from a local restaurant and all ate inside one of the rooms instead of enjoying the outdoors. Our air conditioner worked but one of the other families did not. We called for sheets and blankets for our pullout and had to keep calling after 2 hours had passed and they still were not delivered. Our families had 6am wake up calls because we had to be up and out for early games. The noise and disruption in the hallways continued until after 2:30 am. Security was called several times, they seemed to have a hard time controlling the unruly crowd. The front desk seemed clueless from the check in. Really a horrible experience, couldn't wait to getout of there.

There is no secure parking; you park your car in an unattended lot behind the hotel and then you walk your own bags around the building to the front door. The ladies at the front desk were very nice but charged us for the room upon checkout (even though we had already paid online via hotels.com). The room itself was nicely decorated with a modern theme. Beds were hard and the carpet was soaking wet for some mysterious reason. It seemed relatively quiet for a Friday night. We just needed a cheap, no frills place to crash so if that's what you're looking for, give The Berkeley a try.
