There wasn't much going on during off season, but the hotel's location was perfect. Renovations seemed to be nearly complete, and the hotel was beautifully appointed.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Stay in Asbury Park"
We played all day at the Pinball museum and were thrilled to be a short walk away from the hotel. The staff was extremely friendly the room nice and clean and well appointed. No hotel restaurant but coffee service in the lobby and a GREAT Irish restaurant out the back door. Enjoyed our stay! Thanks.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cool part of town"
I like this hotel a lot. I wish it had a bar or a little cafe, but I think one might be in the works, and there are others nearby. Overall. really cool. Oh, one thing that is problematic is that there are very few outlets accessible to guests in the rooms (I stayed in three different rooms, too). Not the end of the world, but obviously a little inconvenient […] these days. Internet access is way too expensive, too. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful and getting there"
Every time I stay at the Berkely I see where they are making every effort to make it more enjoyable. Growing pains can be difficult. My room was fantastic and for the price...unheard of. The front desk was so nice, welcoming and helpful. My ONLY disappointment was that the restaurant was closed and that there was no coffee in the lobby. Other than that […] it was beautiful. "Could use some improvements"
.This is the 2nd year in a row that we have stayed at this hotel for the NJ 1/2 Marathon. We checked in at 3 pm, and were the 2nd ones on line- after about a 20+ minute check-in (approx. 5 rooms had to be inspected before 1 was located that was clean and ready for guests to check in), we were advised that only 1 of the 3 elevators was working and that […] they were trying to get them fixed. The inside of the hotel (second floor especially) is gorgeous, and I could see why people want to hold their weddings and other events there, but if I were having my wedding there I would be a little upset about the conditions that day. There is only a small lot for parking, and you have to pay $20/night for a parking pass- or else you have to use a metered spot which runs you "about $1/hr" according to the hotel front desk staff. Meters are enforced from 9am-12am. Last year we checked into the hotel and had an issue with the room card key not working. We had to be given a hard copy of the key- not a problem…but this year, the same problem-and apparently it was ALL of the hotel rooms (computer problem) (once I understand-twice-I don't know). We check into our room (521) and the A/C was not working properly, the dresser in the room had its leather handles ripped off & the top drawer had a piece of cardboard shoved into the side of it to keep the drawer closed. We were also missing the swing door lock part that should be attached to the door...the other part of the lock was on the frame. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"This hotel almost ruined my best friend's wedding"
We stayed at this hotel for my best friends wedding. They gave away the bridal suite before she checked in and which they fixed but cause more drama than needed for my best friend the groom. This hotel is under construction which we understand but many things had nothing to do with the construction. Their entire system went down so people had to wait […] in line for over an hour to get checked in. And on top of it they had only 1 or 2 people working the front desk this entire time when they needed at least 4 people to help move the process along. Keys didn't work even when the system came back up.The elevators stopped working multiple times throughout out our stay. The bar and restaurant was not open even though that part of the hotel was not under construction. The night before they had sold out the hotel for people running in a marathon and the rooms we re not ready in time for our group to get checked in. The bathrooms are superficially nice but water pressure sucks and is need of full renovations not just the surface changes that they have made. The beds may have been the most uncomfortable hotel beds I have ever slept on. The rooms have been redone nicely and have great views but that does not make up for the terrible experience we had at this hotel. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I stayed at the hotel before the NJ Half Marathon - the hotel had a wedding and the guest for the race. They only had 2 people working the front-desk - when they knew they would be packed. Also there was no breakfast, even worse - no coffee-maker in the room and no place in the hotel to even buy a cup of coffee???Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Berkeley's Oceanside Hotel experience didn't live up to the impression their website gives. While the furniture is new & modern photos give the "spa" or "resort" like in the photos hides the fact that the building is old & needing many cosmetic repairs. While they charge "resort" prices there are not "resort" amenities one might expect: - no Resturant […] on site - no spa on site - no valet & limited 1st come 1st serve $10 assigned parking spots in the lot behind the building so be prepared to walk a block to get your car. Otherwise metered parking $14 a day - no in & out - so can't move ur car or have to go out every hour to feed the meter beast. - bath towels are rough in texture - no mini bar or frig in room - no coffee maker - while under staffed, the staff at the front desk were very helpful & under the burden of being understaffed to help run such a large facility. Expect a wait in line to check in if busy season. - gift shop is on an archaic system cannot charge purchases to room. - turned on the tv the first 4 channels I flipped thru were snow covered What I did enjoy: - friendly, helpful staff - walk across the street to the ocean - the modern furniture - ocean view - slept good in the King size bed If they'd lower the price I'd stay again or when they raise their standards to match their current "spa / resort" pricing I'd revisit. "Great place in a fun town"
This place would have 5 stars if it was not under construction during our visit. The room was great. The staff was amazing! Stay was OK but will not likely stay there again. For the price there was no coffee either in the room or lobby no breakfast or anything to eat not even restaurant facilites and no microwave in room. Also parking was not free as with most other accommodations in the area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not a good value"
The place was under construction and the restaurant was not open- but none of this was mentioned on the site. No coffee maker, Internet and parking had fees and the ocean view rooms barely had an ocean view- you had to look at a certain angle! "Everything Was New"
We just came back from a lovely weekend stay at the Berkeley Hotel. The area is a little on the quiet side but it is the off season in Asbury Park so it is understandable. It was easy to walk around and follow the boardwalk to the shopping area where there are great restaurants and cute shops! The pluses to the hotel was that it was all renovated and […] they were still in the process of doing work. Everyone that worked there was nice, however it seemed like it was everyone's first day on the job and checking in and out took a little time and people seemed confused. Our room was clean and cute but the bed was lumpy and I was unable to sleep on it. My partner had no problem passing right out so it might just be me. Over all it was good for the price and might stay again if they did something about the beds. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great view of the beach..... ends there."
I paid premium price for a beach front room for the weekend. I wanted it to be special. The view was very nice BUT the comfort ended there. There was not enough lighting in the room nor outlets. The heat and cooling could not be regulated. There was no coffee pot in the room, nor a restaurant or cafe on the premises. Parking was inconvenient and oversold […] so one wasn't guaranteed a space. The vending machines ran out of water. The elevators quit working. But by far the worst was that there were loud and obnoxious guests on the floor partying into early morning hours, slamming doors and arguing with one another. Three calls to the front desk produced no lasting results and we were unable to sleep until 4 AM. I asked the hotel to comp the room for that night and the hotel manager has not followed through with a call for two days now. The hotel was also hosting a Comicon convention and it was overrun with people. We asked for IDs at the door just to get inside to our room! Really?!! The experience was not worth the price! "Ok, clean but dated, nice view"
Room is clean and comfortable but the decor is very dated and the hotel feels like an part meant building rather than a resort. If you get the ocean view it's beautiful.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Good hotel. One of the best of the NJ shore hotel"
Right next to beach. Good hotel. Gets expensive in the summer but always good deals off peak. I think a lot of people have high expecations for a hotel. Compare it to NJ Shore hotels - Berkley is an A+. Compare it to a New York hotel, you might find they lack the 'beck and cal' service perhaps. Wish they had coffee in the rooms, wish they had more parking […] because street parking is tough (AP Police starts ticketing overnights as early as 8:30 if you park across the street). Wish the wonderful restaurant and bar would open again, but they are trying. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not Oceanfront. Bad parking. Ok hotel."
It's not oceanfront, in spite of their name. I knew this and of course booked anyway. I am not dinging them for that - except they really should not have oceanfront in their name. The parking was awful - behind the building, yet the back entrance was locked - they told us. The alternative was street parking with meters, but there was a wedding with […] 400 guests. We were lucky to get the very last spot in the lot, which is unpaved. In torrential rain, it is awful. We had to walk through giant puddles to get out of the parking lot then walk around the very large building to get indoors. HORRIBLE. The hotel is ok. The bathroom was very small and poorly laid out - the sink was next to the toilet. You couldn't stand in front of the sink! The staff was nice. They took care of the lack of heat very quickly. There is really no other choice in Asbury Park. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"We stay there because we have to."
We stay there while attending Home For The Holidays concerts at The Stone Pony. For the second year, we were evacuated in the middle of the night, out onto the cold sidewalk. Why? Who knows? The year before everyone was evacuated and sent to different hotels, I understood the hotel had been damaged by Hurricane Sandy, but why did they book it if it […] was not ready. This time it was impossible to get any towels I called and called then finally found the laundry room on my own out of desperation. This place is not cheap, the room are small but nice but the nightly fire drills are getting old. Hopefully, next year I can afford The Empress. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Stayed at the Berkeley for the 2014 Light of Day"
This is a truly unique hotel - "mature" structure dating back to the turn of the last century. The hotel itself has all the modern features you'd expect and its located right in the heart of the oceanfront section of Asbury Park NJ - only yards (not blocks) from some of the East Coast's, certainly NJ's, most storied music venues - The Stone Pony, The […] Wonder Bar, Paramount Theatre and Tim McCloone's Supper Club & Restaurant. "Off season and out of synch"
I know Asbury Park was hit hard by the storm and that it is January but the Berkeley was still a disappointing experience. The facility shows some signs of wear and tear. The room is very ordinary and a little worn--thin towels and non-working ice machines, for example. The restaurant did not open for breakfast--and there is nothing else all that close. […] Oddly, the place was full of revelers packing the bar and partying until late at night. I even had to sign a "party policy," a first ever, so I guess it draws a "fun-loving" crowd. Other minor complaints--a $10 a night charge for parking in an open lot that was about a two block walk from the entrance and a $10 charge for internet that worked very sporadically. The food in the restaurant matched the decor and overall feel--ordinary. This may not be an accurate shot since it really is off season. It is right on the beach and the staff was nice enough. "Decent place to stay in Asbury"
I've stayed at the Berkeley before, but never did the review. We came down for SantaCon and the weather was terrible (snow/ice & high winds) - as a result I think a lot of people cancelled their trips. Front desk informed us upon arrival that we had been upgraded to a suite for free which was great. The room was nice, but a little drafty. The heat kept […] kicking on to counter the draft, but not it kept it pretty comfortable. My only complaint on cleanliness was the bathroom floor had some hair on it, but otherwise the room was clean and maintained. We got in late that night and there were a bunch of 20 somethings fighting in the hall right outside our door. I called the front desk and eventually it all calmed down. Upon check out the next day I found my bill was less than what I booked online for.. Not sure if they discounted me for the inconvenience of the hallway fight or not, but I'll take it either way. lol - All in all this is a nice hotel with a lot of amenities, nice staff and a lot of atmosphere. The room was newly renovated and updated. It was strange the shower only has a half glass door on it so you actually had to get in the shower to turn it on. "It's my happy place"
This is my favorite hotel. Went to check in and they gave us a complementary upgrade. Unfortunately when we went to our room the door was already open. It seemed someone was using the room. Called the main desk and went back down stairs. They apologized for the situation and put us in a different room on the same floor. Not a great way to start but […] the second room was even better then the first so it totally made up for it. You could see the ocean and the city from the bed. "Better than a chain"
The rooms look like they were remodeled about 10 years ago and are getting worn. Also, Parking is a big problem - the city charges $10 a day no "in&out" privilege. "Nice hotel with spotty upgrades"
A nice hotel with lots if history. Lobby and ballrooms are very nice. The room I was in was redone but was not worth the $250 a night off season. No matter how much make-up they put on this Grand Dame does not cover up the flaws. "Beware cancellation policy"
Hotel location is nice but that is about all that is positive about it. Bed very uncomfortable, ice machines did not have ice, takes forever to check in and to get an elevator. They have a 7 day cancellation policy which they are not willing to make an exception on. I had a medical emergency in the family and tried to cancel within 48 hours. They refused […] to accomodate my request. During my stay someone pulled the fire alarm at 2AM. Had to evacuate room and stand in lobby for 30 minutes. Turned out to be a drunk guest pulling alarm. They refused to give any of the guests any kind of discount or credit towards there room. While advertised as beachfront there is a boarded up building between ocean front rooms and the beach. Hotel parking is double per day as street parking. Hotel is pricey for the value received. I stayed here for two nights with three of my friends. The room was very spacious, and the beds were very comfortable. Parking was ridiculous. $20/night to park, unless […] you want to find street parking for an hourly fee. There was a herb/vegetable garden in the back of the hotel (ocean side).
