"Better than Expected"
My friends and I just stayed 6/20-6/22/14 for a girl's weekend. I had some hesitation about staying here because of some prior bad reviews I read both here and on Yelp, so I went to the Berkeley Oceanfront expecting...I don' t know what, but hoping for the best. Any time we had to call down to the front desk (which wasn't often) our requests were answered in a timely fashion. The location is ideal, as it's just a short walk to the Boardwalk and the beach. We didn't encounter any problems with cleanliness, things falling apart, or a slow elevator (some of the things I saw mentioned online). Parking is nearby and is $20 a day, and the hotel valets your car. We didn't get a chance to check out the pool, so I can't comment on that. Everything outside my room, itself, looks great, and my room looked fine at first but when I needed the AC to be turned down they had to send someone to my room to unscrew something on the wall and do it there, and to adjust it again would have required the same action again. And the water pressure in the shower twice dropped from perfectly good to […] absolute zero for about 8-10 sec and then came back up to normal again. And the windows were very heavy and difficult to open because they were older and off of their track, wouldn't stay open. These three things tell me that the behind-the scenes infrastructure is either weak, old or in the middle of being upgraded. Having said all of this, overall I was very happy to be there because the price was fair, I love Asbury Park, the hotel looks really nice (due to recent construction upgrades, I was told), and it is a handsome place, generally. And it is very near the water, being on Ocean Ave, which is great. My only serious point to them is that when I came in to check in at midnight it seemed like no one was around. There was someone at the front desk but with pillars and walls between the front door and the front desk, it seemed to me that a non-guest could EASILY enter the hotel and not be seen, as I had done. "Excellent service made up for any negatives"
My friends & I stayed for Memorial Day weekend- obviously the first weekend of the season. It's not unexpected for there to be some kinks in a hotel room that has probably not been used in a few months, but there were lots of small bugs dead/dying on the windowsills. The rest of the room was bright & clean so it seems that housekeeping just neglected […] to clean near the windows. As it was just a quick swipe of toilet paper to clean the windowsills, I did not report it. Also, our AC was not functioning properly- despite setting the thermostat to 69, the vent was blowing hot air & the temperature in the room continued to climb. After calling the front desk, a maintenance person was in the room in less than 10 minutes & was even joined by a supervisor-type a few minutes later. The issue was fully resolved with 30 minutes & we even received a call back from the front desk to make sure it was being fixed. Once those issues were resolved, the rest of our weekend was fantastic. The room was large (2 Queens & a pull-out sofa on the other side of the room- plenty of room for 4 people), well-furnished, & clean. Check-in was absolutely seamless (granted, we had arrived before the rush). Key resets, check-out, bag storage, & taxi requests were all handled perfectly. I'd read other reviews that the elevators can be very slow, but we did not find that to be an issue- all 4 were running. The grounds were in great condition, & the location can't be beat. Our shower kept turn off & on on it own.. maintenance came and "fixed it" the next morning when I got in the shower it wasn't fixed.. when we left I left a sweater in the room.. i called the next day once I realized I forgot it.. they had housekeeping check and they said there […] was nothing I'm the room. Stayed for Memorial Day weekend and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Easy check-in/out with friendly and fast valet. I booked an ocean view King and was surprised at the beautiful unobstructed view of the Atlantic and AP Boardwalk. "Boardwalk is great"
The rooms were very updated with nice finishes and the beds were extremely comfortable. The boardwalk is very nice and has everything from the pinball hall of fame to the Stone Pony where Springsteen started. The hotel is still undergoing renovations from the aftermath of the hurricane so don't expect to enjoy the hotel bar or restaurant. The area of […] Asbury is also undergoing some renovations as there are still some rougher neighborhoods outside of the boardwalk area but all in all very up and coming. Also had some of the best Cuban food on the boardwalk. That being said the negatives of the hotel were that my room had very little shower pressure to the point that I was worried I wouldn't be able to finish without having shampoo still left in my hair. Also when I tried to use the in room A/C to cool my room it cranked the heat up to 80. This wasn't too much an issue for me as the weather was cool and rainy most days but it could be an issue for those wanting a bit of respite from the hot NJ summer. Have stayed here in the past and keep trying in the hopes that it will improve. The location is good and the rooms, once you get to them are adequate. Two major issues on this trip: First - check in was a nightmare, the queue was long mostly because the keystone cops appeared to be working the desk. "Don't go there when it still gets cold at night."
Let's see, the carpet by the bathroom was soaking wet when I got there, I guess they had a bathtub flood or something and didn't bother drying it out. I couldn't adjust the thermostat when it got cold at night because starting May 1 they shut the heat to the building, of course they don't tell you that when you book your reservation. They charge you $10/day for internet connection thru a third party billing then after you pay you find out that the hotel doesn't have very good connection location at all, my internet worked for a total of 11 minutes out of the 24 hours I paid for. Good luck trying to get your money back. They have an ocean view but there is a very large building between your view to the ocean which is really a big eye sore. The check-in was horrendous. We waited over an hour to check in. There was a wedding taking place that evening and most guests were having a problem checking in to their room and be on time for the wedding. "Could use some improvements"
.This is the 2nd year in a row that we have stayed at this hotel for the NJ 1/2 Marathon. We checked in at 3 pm, and were the 2nd ones on line- after about a 20+ minute check-in (approx. 5 rooms had to be inspected before 1 was located that was clean and ready for guests to check in), we were advised that only 1 of the 3 elevators was working and that […] they were trying to get them fixed. The inside of the hotel (second floor especially) is gorgeous, and I could see why people want to hold their weddings and other events there, but if I were having my wedding there I would be a little upset about the conditions that day. There is only a small lot for parking, and you have to pay $20/night for a parking pass- or else you have to use a metered spot which runs you "about $1/hr" according to the hotel front desk staff. Meters are enforced from 9am-12am. Last year we checked into the hotel and had an issue with the room card key not working. We had to be given a hard copy of the key- not a problem…but this year, the same problem-and apparently it was ALL of the hotel rooms (computer problem) (once I understand-twice-I don't know). We check into our room (521) and the A/C was not working properly, the dresser in the room had its leather handles ripped off & the top drawer had a piece of cardboard shoved into the side of it to keep the drawer closed. "This hotel almost ruined my best friend's wedding"
We stayed at this hotel for my best friends wedding. They gave away the bridal suite before she checked in and which they fixed but cause more drama than needed for my best friend the groom. This hotel is under construction which we understand but many things had nothing to do with the construction. Their entire system went down so people had to wait […] in line for over an hour to get checked in. And on top of it they had only 1 or 2 people working the front desk this entire time when they needed at least 4 people to help move the process along. Keys didn't work even when the system came back up.The elevators stopped working multiple times throughout out our stay. The bar and restaurant was not open even though that part of the hotel was not under construction. The night before they had sold out the hotel for people running in a marathon and the rooms we re not ready in time for our group to get checked in. The bathrooms are superficially nice but water pressure sucks and is need of full renovations not just the surface changes that they have made. The beds may have been the most uncomfortable hotel beds I have ever slept on. While the furniture is new & modern photos give the "spa" or "resort" like in the photos hides the fact that the building is old & needing many cosmetic repairs. While they charge "resort" prices there are not "resort" amenities one might expect: - no Resturant […] on site - no spa on site - no valet & limited 1st come 1st serve $10 assigned parking spots in the lot behind the building so be prepared to walk a block to get your car. Otherwise metered parking $14 a day - no in & out - so can't move ur car or have to go out every hour to feed the meter beast. - bath towels are rough in texture - no mini bar or frig in room - no coffee maker - while under staffed, the staff at the front desk were very helpful & under the burden of being understaffed to help run such a large facility.
