Everything is pretty clean and big. Not satisfied with the assorment of food to chose during breakfast and night buffe, very few to chose from and the breakfast were pretty much the same all day during my 4 nights visit. Although this were the only downside with the resort, especially for that cheap price.
- Good value
- ok breakfast
- nice room with balcony
- very tasty buffet dinner
- beautiful garden view and nice lake around
- far from the beach
- lack of the sunbeds
- far from restaurants
- we booked an extra-bed and they gave us twin room.
- lack of food in the breakfasts and crowds of locals
This place is catered for Chinese tourists, I'm not complaining, just stating a fact. The room was decent and clean, although the bath tub / shower leaked and caused the bath mat to soak upon use.
I was probably the only guest not holding either a Chinese or Russian passport. Not in itself a bad thing, just expect the food to be catered to a mainly Chinese pallet and the rules at the breakfast bar to be non-existent / unenforceable. If, like myself, you live in or have experienced much of China this isn't an issue, simply stating a fact.
The pool was large and not very busy, but the beach area reserved for the hotel was small and uncomfortably busy. Nothing like having a whole entourage of Chinese tourists following one around trying to snap a photo of a foreign couple whilst trying to enjoy a romantic swim with one's girlfriend to spoil any mood whatsoever. That said - the beach is completely devoid of patrons at night, although I would not recommend swimming if one is not familiar with the tides. There is no help here.
Lack of amenities: We arrived on a Friday evening at 9:45pm and were hungry after the travelling so we looked up the room service menu and called the provided number. They told us that they were closed, and when we mentioned that the information sheet says that they were open until 10pm, they just repeated 'closed' and offered no other explanation or help. At this point, we headed out of our room in search of the bar lounge and restaurants that we saw signs for (and are currently listed in their hotel website). We followed signs down long hallways and it led us to locked doors to empty rooms. I asked front desk and they said that the bar lounge and restaurants were all closed, as in not open for business at all. They falsely advertise amenities that do not exist, and I'm very perplexed as to why they are getting the high reviews on tripadvisor... We ended up having to get instant noodles in their little convenience mart in the lobby area. Not a great way to start our relaxing vacation.
Dirty room: Our room was incredibly disappointing. We had disgusting, stained rugs and floors, and MOLD on the bed skirt and around the entire rim of the sink. Pictures as shown. These were the most notably bad areas, but the entire room was old. The only plus was that the air conditioning thankfully worked.
Pool: The pool area was decent, though they didn't provide any beach towels in the room or pool area, so that was an inconvenience.
Restaurants: We did enjoy the all-you-can-eat buffet (I think it was ~$30/person) that was offered in the main lobby/restaurant area. The BBQ was delish, the free flow beer was a nice surprise. Desserts were very so-so. The restaurant on the ground level was very good as well. The hotel advertised 3-4 more restaurants that did not exist.
Location: Not directly on the beach, but there was golf cart transportation offered to get to the beach. This was confusing and not well advertised. The first cart dropped you off around a small bay, at another hotel's property, then one had to walk through their pool area and to the front hotel entrance, and then find the second hotel golf cart across the street which took you the rest of the way to the hotel beach private area. The beach is walkable (probably 15-20 minutes) if one did not want to figure out the golf cart system.
Transportation: We tried to go to downtown Sanya one night and we waited in front of the hotel for about 25 minutes and no cabs came. There were many staff people there but they only helped those arriving. In my broken Mandarin, I tried to tell one person we needed a cab, and he asked where we were going, and walked away like he was going to help, but then he didn't. So we decided to walk to the main strip (20 min) to find a cab there. After 4 cab refusals, we finally found one to take us after an hour or so. Very frustrating.
All in all, I do not recommend this hotel. Unless you are on serious budget, consider spending another ~$50+ night for a better hotel... I was misled by the high reviews on tripadvisor and am baffled at the suspiciously good comments, based on our own hotel experience.
This is so far the best hotel for budget traveller. This hotel has decent rooms, nice pool, good food, and only like a few minutes walk to the beach. At night, they have entertainers that will sing while you have your BBQ. If you would like to reach the beach faster, they have free transportation. The only complain I have is that their rooms and utilities need to be improved. I especially didn't like the bathroom. But didn't really care 'coz I spent most of my time at the beach with my wife. Overall, recommended for budget travellers.
Cactus resort I didn't expect good hotel when I selected this hotel. But hotel room, breakfast and facility were better than my expectation. And this would be the cheapest resort in Yalong bay. This hotel is very close from famous island and forest park. Staff with poor English skills and purely Chinese menu, but with clean rooms and good value for money at the location. The room was large and comfortable with very nice beach near hotel. Swimming pool was excellent and restaurant average. The beach bar (Can be Better) , which faces the ocean, can offer you comfort environment with gentle sea breeze. They also have a Spa that give you the spa massage, which can give you the feeling of home. The mini water park can give your children happy games on water, with safe and interesting equipment. I liked the
The fish massage can make you feel the movement of the small fish, which offers you the different massage feeling is 30 mins for 38 RMB. The swimming bar offers you a place to rest and enjoy your swimming time. This resort offer the biggest swimming pool in Yalong Bay ,gives you perfect feeling with large area and green water.
"Anyway my stay was great one"
I really didn't expect much from this hotel/resort and I was happy to realize that it was actually very good! The rooms are clean and have comfortable beds, the staff can speak decent English (compared to the other hotels in Sanya), the resort is big, green and with a nice pool. The SPA is quite good as well. They have a good private beach that isn't crowded (for China).
I would just not recommend the food (at least the western). We tried the breakfast one morning and didn't like it. The restaurant was also not good. I would recommend to eat outside the resort.
We enjoyed a lovely 2-night stay on New Year day and the next day. Surprisingly it was not crowded. The bedroom was clean. We liked the huge bed they provided. We found the hotel staff to be very helpful, especially in helping us to negotiate a good price for taxi to go to various locations of interest. We did not eat at the hotel as there were many eating places (within walking distance of 500m) down the road at La Floriet.
Wao what a wonderful stay, back in 2005, as couple. spent 4 days, enjoyed themed swim pool, near white sand beach, dedicated area for hotel guest. In Jan temp was 28C, lovely... sun. Rooms were average, certainly selected the cheapest one from Elong, so got what we paid. Noisy nights. Food in buffet was awesome. Had a coach service for city. enjoyed our trip.
There are many reasons why this hotel is excellent and why me and my wife had such a great stay.
The swimming pool is a massive highlight with its opening hours and cleanliness and bar. Next you have the golf cart to the beach which is great too. The location is also amazing, being tucked into a corner of Yalong bay making it very relaxing and a welcome treat to enjoy the fresh sea air in China.
However let's look at the facts - this is a reasonably expensive hotel for China and is aiming to compete with other major resorts not only in Sanya but also south east Asia. The amenities inside the hotel need a bit more thought in my opinion. Restaurants with a wider and more reasonably priced menu for one - be aware that with a lack of restaurants nearby you are very restricted. Maybe more in the way of evening entertainment - being in Yalong bay after about 10pm your options are limited unless you want to pay for taxis, or a courtesy car service to another overpriced bar or restaurant. In my opinion Yalong bay and Cactus Resort are beautiful and worth a visit but the area needs to be more prepared to offer entertainment to tourists who on arrival are without many options, and therefore have no choice but to pay way over the odds for average food and service, that anywhere else in China or in Hainan would cost under half the price. I have been to resorts in Fiji, Australia, South America and Europe and this still has a way to come before competing with the big boys.
