"Reasonably Good Choice" Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 24, 2013

Since I got a very good hotel rate here in comparison to other hotels, I was generally satisfied with the value for the service provided, although somewhat put off by extremely high charges for internet access (80 NIS/$22 per day) which only covered one computer (so me and my wife were compelled to alternative use of my computer) and high charges for shabbos dinner and lunch ($90 per person). The parking charge was 32 NIS a day ($9 per day) wasn't so bad. I think next time I would just contact the hotel directly and tell them precisely what I wanted (e.g., shabbos dinner for two; internet access for two, parking, etc.) and ask them what price they would offer. Also, the only front desk person worth dealing with is Elliot. He will try his hardest to make you happy.

If you're looking for a place that off the beaten path this is it. Really there is not a lot to do here, if that's what your looking for. You get a free breakfast which is simple, but plenty. There is 1 store on the way to the lodge, get all your stuff there. It comes with a small mid-sized fridge.

The Palatin was my home base during my most recent visit to Israel. When you visit Jerusalem and stay at the Palatin, you are really paying for the location. The prices are cheap compared to many other options in the area, but you get what you pay for. The breakfast left quite a bit to be desired and the maid service was not very thorough. You also […] get small rooms (we had a renovated one away from the main square and had no issues with noise or excessive wear that I read in other reviews). Overall, it was fine for what we needed. Not great, but not horrible. Read more

A very basic hotel, no elevator, there's a nearby parking lot (need to pay - free on Friday and Saturday). The location is very comfortable, but the hotel itself is a bit old and the room was not the cleanest I've ever seen.

The best features of this hostel are: (1) 20-minute walk to the Old City, and (2) free wireless. The staff are not friendly at all; sometimes they act rude as if you bothered them when you ask questions. My room was never cleaned. Only the trash was picked up daily. The floors were not dusted or mopped; not even the bathroom floors. One can see dust […] on the floor along the wall that was there every day. They never changed the sheets (I was there for 5 nights). The trash truck noise and people talking and yellying are heard every night even at 3 or 4 in the morning (forget about a good sleep!). The breakfast is almost OK. The bell one must ring to come in does not work, so one might be 10 minutes ringing the bell that they cannot hear upstairs to let you in. Read more

This hotel is in an excellent location & is very inexpensive. Having said that I would recommend this hotel for only the heartiest backpackers. The room is tiny. The bathroom is even tinier. There were no dressers or drawers. We literally lived out of our suitcases. There was only one useable electric outlet. There was no electric outlet in the bathroom. […] The TV was modern & that was the only modern amenity. The staff was helpful & friendly. The breakfast was adequate & good but not at all equal to the 4 & 5 star hotels. There is no elevator but the staff was very helpful in carrying our bags. If you are roughing it - this is the place. Palatin is a charming small hotel in a very convenient location--easy walk to Ben Yahuda and Jaffa road areas. Reasonably pleasant not long walk to old city (Jaffa Gate side). Pretty close to Mahane Yehuda market as well. Quiet, on a pedestrianized street just off major roads. The rooms are very small but nice and with a bit of charm. Very helpful and […] welcoming staff. Pleasant breakfast roon with prefectly fine food. A homey oasis in a sometimes over-tourist-crowded city. Read more

We absolutely loved this hotel, but have to say that the highlight of our stay was the lady who runs the show, a wonderful lady by the name of Rosa. Rosa not only was incredibly hospitable, but also proactive without being pushy about the tourist attractions and practical tips that one as a tourist always appreciates. As a polyglot she was extremelly […] informative in her many languages and we spent a good time of our in between walking resting moments chatting with her about the culture of the city that the tourist guides fail to illustrate. By the end of our stay we insisted she writes a book about her experiences. The hotel is very charming, nothing beats the breakfast on the beautiful balconies adorned with fresh flowers overlooking the middle of the city center, and the cleanliness and comfort in small rooms are invaluable. Location is perfect as well, very close to the greatest market ever, to the new tram, to new Jerusalem, and a perfect short walk away from the marvels of the old city. We loved it. Thank you, Rosa. Upon arriving, I was amazed that this motel calls itself a hotel. There is no elevator, the lobby is located on the second floor and you have to wait for someone to open the door for you in order to get in. The room keys have a huge key ring which forces you to leave the key at the 'reception' and reclaim it everytime you want to go in your room. The […] room was stinky and filthy. The bed was a single bed but it felt even smaller. The bathroom was beyond small and the walls were covered with mold. I had to buy a bottle of hand soap, because the soap bars were disgusting!!! I wouldn't recommend this motel not even to my enemies. The owner of the motel need to close it for renovation ASAP, and bring it from the early 19th to the 21st century! Read more

Hotel is just as decribe. An excellent no frills hotel in an excellent location. Corner of Jaffa and King George around the corner from all buses and taxis. Fifteen minute walk to Jaffa Gate. Nearby to all shopping and restaurants. The hotel has no elevator which was disclosed ahead of arrival. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast […] was a traditional Israeli breakfast with plenty of options. The room was clean comfortable and most of all safe. The street nose is obvious due to the close proximity to all the attractions. The market place is another 10 minute walk in the opposite directions. I would certainly stay in this hotel again. Address is difficult to drive up because it is in a plaza. You can easily walk the last block. Read more

I guess I'm about 35 years too old for this hotel. It's in a great location--Ben Yehuda St. neighborhood--and has two balconies overlooking the street that appear charming, but the hotel itself is seedy and depressing. Hotel front desk service varied from cursory to helpful. Room itself was a motivation to get out of it and tour. The first night my […] a/c literally went on and off every 15 seconds and kept me awake all night. The cleaner did go up to the room and made some adjustment to the a/c. The room was tiny and furniture was old. Bed linen was okay. Bathroom shower tiny. Read more

Palatin is located in a great area of Jerusalem. It is next to the lively streets of Ben Yehuda and King George filled with restaurants, shops, and night-life. Just a 5-minute stroll to the market and a 15ish- minute walk to the Old City at Jaffa Gate. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. There were some surprises, though not necessarily bad […] surprises. The hotel is three-stories high and does not have an elevator. A kind man who worked at Palatin carried our luggage up to our room; so this was clearly not a problem. There was only a shower, no bath-tub. We turned in our room key to the receptionist before leaving the hotel and picked it up from them when we returned to our room. The reception area is 24-hours. We did not have any issues because of this. On some nights, we got back to the room around 2am. The double bed was actually two twin mattresses placed together in some form. However, it was EXTREMELY comfortable. Palatin provided two very puffy and soft comforters and many extra pillows and a blanket. Breakfast was included and was yummy. Tea and coffee is free and available 24-hours. The hotel arranged for our ride to the airport and allowed us to leave our luggage at the hotel after we checked out. We spent four wonderful nights at Palatin. Read more

A good, affordable hotel smack in the middle of the most interesting area of New/West Jerusalem, with both the Old City and even the Bus Station within reasonable walking distance. The rooms are not exceptional, but fine by European standards, and the WiFi is free, unlike fancier Jerursalem hotels that really rip you off. What really impressed me was […] the very kind and helpful staff. They put an amazing amount of effort they put into helping me orient myself and with my tour and travel arrangements, even when they weren't getting commisions. The service is truly exceptional, even among much ritzier classes of hotel. Read more

The good points, it is a bed and breakfast and the breakfast was decent, they had several spreads, like tuna salad, egg salad, a couple of different cream cheeses, jam, hard boiled eggs, Israeli salad (chopped cucumber & tomatoes), herring, yogurt, cold cereal and bread. A toaster and drinks included 2 or 3 choices of juice, water, milk, coffee and […] tea. The coffee and tea are available 24 hours/day. The guy at the front desk was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Giving us directions and such as we asked. The guy that was there the 3rd day a bit less friendly but still answered questions. The rooms were small but we basically were there to sleep and shower. The bathroom had showers only no tubs, but that was fine with me. The room was clean the heater worked and the windows open. There is TV and they supply you with wi-fi access if you have your own computer, but there were several internet cafe near by (didn't use). Also, no elevator just stairs, we were on the 2nd floor and didn't have a problem with that, I just didn't know till I got there. The location was great, (though we got lost getting there, called the hotel and he gave us step by step directions). It was in walking distance of shops and restaurants. We took a taxi to "the wall" as I thought it too far for me to walk and then walk around there and back. Read more

Location was great, but room was smoky, one of my pet peeves of staying at a hotel. Generally, for the price, everything else was alright. Breakfast was good and the staff was helpful, especially when helping me set up a tour. Rooms are worn, so don't expect luxury - just the bare basics. Hotel is near a good shopping area, but Israelis apparently like […] to stay up late and can be loud, so hotels get a lot of noise from the street. The only reason I wouldn't go back is the cigarette smoke that infiltrates the rooms. Read more

This location is great. Right in the middle of all the action. Only ten minutes from the old city. The room was solid, but not spectacular. There were 4 different people behind the desk while I was there and two were very helpful and two were not. Overall it was a pleasant experience.

Pros: - Great service. The staff were all very nice and accommodating, which is difficult to find in Israel. - Great location. Right in Jerusalem, convenient to most attractions. - Has air conditioning. Cons: - The standard room looked like it hadn't been updated in at least 50 years. Very old shower, hair dryer that barely worked, old and tired walls, […] carpet and furniture. Need renovation and updating desperately! - Room was extremely small. I felt like I was staying in a hostel but paying twice as much. - The breakfast is terrible and minimal. - No fridge in the room or ice machine. Read more

This is a small hotel with no elevator. That being said, they are very helpful at getting your bags to and from your room and the entry level. The owners are very nice and very accommodating. The breakfast is small, but, has everything you need to have a great start to your day. The hotel is an easy downhill walk to the old city (about 15-20 minutes). […] A little tiring on the way home at the end of the day, but, still very doable. There are great walking-only streets all around the hotel with shopping and dining. The rooms are small but very clean and very comfortable. I would recommend this hotel and would stay here again for the location and hospitality were great. For those of you that are driving into the city, you must know that arriving here by car can be challenging. If you are relying on a map alone, just going down Agripas street won't get you there. Just where Agripas dead-ends into a walking section, is where the hotel is. If you are approaching Agripas via Mordechai Aliash, turn into the pay parking lot at the shopping center just before Agripas (NOT the indoor structure, but, the one past it, outdoors). This is the parking for the hotel, but, parking is not included, you must pay extra. It is worth it to park here and leave your car for the duration and not try to drive in Jerusalem again until you leave. It is a bit pricey, but, easier to park and pay than to drive in this city! My 19-yr. old daughter and I stayed at the Palatin Hotel for 7 nights in June 2010. It was an absolutely delightful experience and we would definitely stay there again. We enjoyed the 8-10 minute walk to the Jaffa Gate, as well as all the little shops and restaurants all along the way. The hotel staff were so friendly and helpful, no matter what it […] was we needed: directions, suggestions on where to eat, an airport shuttle, etc. We paid a little extra and stayed on the newly-renovated (updated 2 yrs. ago) first floor. This is no five-star hotel by any means and the room was somewhat cramped for space, but there was a nice sized double sliding door closet, and the beds were comfortable and very clean (my 6'1" son would have found the beds to be short). The flooring throughout was a very attractive grey stone (no carpeting anywhere). The bathroom was small, yet very functional, with a nice large sink, and the shower had the best water pressure and fixtures of any hotel I have ever stayed in. The upper floors in the hotel have carpeting and were not renovated when they did our floor. Breakfast was good---we had a choice of 2 cereals, hard boiled eggs, tuna salad, tomatoes, cheese, some sort of sliced meat, cottage cheese, orange juice, milk, lemonade, coffee, tea, fresh bread, jams, etc. We very much enjoyed staying at the Palatin, and we found it to be an excellent value. For a country which does not usually excel at customer service, we found the staff to be superb; friendly, helpful and with excellent English. Even the cleaner stopped to say hello. The other guests were also very friendly and a conversation is easy to strike up during breakfast. The hotel was well located near to Ben Yehudah street for shopping, eating […] and drinking. The old city was about 20 minutes walk away down Jaffa street or alternatively the tram can be taken in just a few minutes. Central bus station is also both walkable and accessible by tram. Breakfast was quite good but did get a bit boring after a few days. Everything was replenished by the friendly staff member on a regular basis. Tea and coffee is available throughout the day. There is free wifi in the room. The room itself was small, even for two people traveling light but the bathroom was recently refurbished and was pleasant. All in all, this is a very good budget hotel for a couple or lone traveler. It should be noted that there are a lot of stairs and no elevator so not suitable for older or less-able guests. Read more

This was a good modest hotel, no whistles and bells. The staff was very helpful and accomodating. The hotel is located in the center of action in Western Jerusalem. The breakfast was not all that great in terms of choices. The room was clean and quiet.

Great hotel, great location (10 minutes walk to the old city, 5 minutes from the local market). Nice balconies to sit on and relax in the evenings. Staff friendly and helpful. Only 2 very minor complaints - a kebab shop near the hotel open until the early hours - loads of noisy teenagers (same all over the world!) and a shower head that insisted on […] sliding down its rail and hitting you on the head while you were trying to wash. Would recommend this hotel to anyone - really enjoyed our stay. Read more

A nice little hotel in a quiet corner in the center of everything. Many restaurants and snackbars a few hundred yards away. TV and airconditioning. Rich breakfast. About 15 minutes walk to the Old city Good conditions at a low price.

To start off, this is a small, family owned place. My wife and I came in at around 1:00 AM on a Sunday night and the man behind the counter helped us carry all of our heavy luggage up to our room and then proceeded to surprise us with an EXTRA LARGE ROOM FOR NO EXTRA CHARGE so we could fit all of it comfortably. There's fresh coffee in the breakfast […] room all day and all night long and fresh milk in the fridge. The people who work there are VERY kind and helpful. We were there the week of our 1st Wedding Anniversary and I wanted to make a special dinner for my wife. My wife had just been sick and we couldn't go out anywhere, so I wanted to make something special in the Hotel. The woman who works in the office was extremely happy to help get me the poles they use to make their Sukka so I could use them to make a Chuppah for my wife and I to eat under. Then she had her worker Salach help me for 2 HOURS make it look beautiful with flowers and white drapes and a table and 2 chairs...our Anniversary dinner was beautiful and it was ALL BECAUSE OF THE HOTEL PALATIN! I posted the pictures on facebook and everyone thought we were at a 5 Star Villa/Resort! Read more

The hotel isn't much to look at from the outside is actually fairly pleasant on the interior, although I heard from another fellow staying there that the rooms aren't as nice on the upper floors. I was staying on the first floor of rooms (effectively the third floor) which were fairly nice, my room was tiny and quite Spartan but fairly comfortable. […] The location is perfect, however, you're right in the main shopping area around Ben yehuda street, and only a short walk to the Jaffa gate of the old city. If you're traveling on a budget and can get a room on the lower floor it's a great place to stay. Read more
