Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa - Honolulu

Not only did we find the hotel first rate but its' location made it easy to get around without having to drive. Most everything we wanted to see or visit was within walking distance. We had a very enjoyable stay and will be sure to recommend it to our friends and family.

This hotel rates as one of the best in Waikiki, quaint, classy and the most central location of any hotel on the beach. We had a Banyan room with a beach view and birds chirping. Total relaxing. I highly recommend this hotel to travelers.

I have stayed at many hotel in Waikiki as I travel there for business regularlly. I have to say the Westin Moana Surfrider is by far one of the nicest and I highly recommend it! The building is absolutely beautiful as is the enormous Banyon tree in the courtyard. This hotel is all about location, location, location. Rooms are nice, but very small. The rooms in the historical part of the building (not the new towers) are like Manhattan sized rooms. Thee was mold in the bathroom, no fan in the bathroom. The tiny TV was so far fom the bed. The maid service was a different time everyday, on one day 2pm, the next 12noon, the next 4pm. The building was extremely old, there was so much street noise unable to block out from doors/windows because of gaps in frame.

Pros: The Moana Surfrider is ideally located in Waikiki. We were more than pleased with our 'partial ocean view' room and enjoyed mornings and evenings on the lanai. The hotel is beautiful!!!! I love the open lobby and the back courtyard and beach area is amazing. I can't say enough good things about the employees and their service too! However, my friend and I were traveling together and for the first two nights we were put in a historic room with a kind size bed. It was the smallest hotel room I have ever seen! […] Opening the front door touched the edge of the bed, and that's the extent of space surrounding the bed. I think if you want to keep the room historic size you need to keep smaller furniture since it was hard to walk around. Then they moved us to a double bed room after two nights, but it was right over the top of the valet facing the noisy street. That street is so noisy at night with crowds and street performers, and then starting around 4:30 am we could hear valet talking and wheeling luggage racks. It didn't seem like the windows were sound proof at all. We kept thinking "are the windows open?" because it was so loud. I think its crazy you can stay in Manhattan and not hear a sound but here they obviously haven't sound proofed the front windows. Needless to say I didn't get very much restful sleep on my supposed to be relaxing vacation :( Everything else was great except for the comfort of the room. Read more

We stayed at the double deluxe ocean front. it was so close to the beach. The view was gorgeous. We could see the aura of morning sun rise over the diamond head from the balcony and watched the sun set every evening. Staffs are very friendly and helpful, especially the house keepers.

Right on the beach in Waikiki. Nice hotel. Great architecture. Rooms were nice, but nothing special. Restaurants (both of them) in the hotel were way overpriced (even for Waikiki), had horrible service and very mediocre to poor food.

This hotel is situated within the busiest section of Waikiki. If you are just staying in Waikiki, there is no need to rent a car as there are numerous shops around the hotel and you can take the trolley to get to Ala Moana mall. It is a beautiful hotel which is a factor in our selection. However, the rooms are small.Also, some improvement on housekeeping - I found nuts when I opened the drawer where the outlets are and one of the towels have a permanent stain on them. I do like that the rooms have robes and slippers. The front desk was difficult to get a hold of. When you call, they will call you back and there is always a line. They need more than 3 clerks. The only restaurant we went to was the Beach Bar. I had Loco Moco - it was OK,my husband had a salad and he liked it. We were very satisfied with our drinks. Our attendant was also very efficient. My daughter dropped a fork and he replaced it in a second. There is a resort fee which includes parking (at Sheraton), wi-fi, free kids meal with a paying adult, etc. If you are after location, I would recommend it. Personally, as there are numerous hotels in the area, I would most likely try others. Read more

If there was a view, maybe it was one of those "if you stand in this spot and stretch you can see..." kind of things. I put out my room service card for breakfast about 10pm because I had to catch an early flight. About a half hour after they were supposed to have delivered my breakfast, I happened to look outside and the room service card was still hanging from the door. When I commented on this to the front desk person on checking out he said "Isn't that odd considering that room service is right below that room?" But he never apologized. Such a disappointment. Booked this hotel as we had stayed in Waikiki before and it looked great. Booked early and went for an upgraded room so we could have a special experience over Thanksgiving. The hotel had other ideas though. On arrival we waited 10 minutes to check in then another 10 while the check in staff scuttled about going in and out of […] the back office. We should have known this was not a good sign. They had overbooked the grade of room we had booked and so they downgraded us to a smelly, cramped room overlooking the street - which would struggle to get 3 stars let alone 4. They offered us hotel credit as compensation but they were missing the point. If we wanted to save money we would have booked a lower category of room. We talked to the duty manager who was totally ineffectual and just kept saying 'I apologise on behalf of my organisation'. What does that even mean? A 'I'm sorry' would have been nice. There were so many other things they could have done to soften the blow (at minimal cost) - champagne, flowers, chocolates, a personal note from the manager - but they did nothing. The food and service in the restaurants was good but the hotel was so crowded with wedding parties (we saw 6 over a 4 day period) the staff seemed very stretched. There are plenty of other 4 star hotels in Waikiki so I'd say - go somewhere else! Read more

We just got home and truly enjoyed our stay. The location is very convienent, beach bar is outstanding (Marnie and Cheryl are awesome like always). The location is one of the best you can get in the Waikiki stretch, with direct access to the beach and minutes from all the shopping center. Downside to our stay was the noise level. Our room was located on the fourth floor of the historical […] building facing Kalakaua Avenue, and the noise level especially at night time with traffic and street performers and people in general was very very disturbing and unresting. We had very difficult time falling asleep and staying asleep. We would suggest the hotel management to consider upgrading the windows. If anyone is considering lodging at Moana Surfrider, I suggest either booking a room facing the ocean, or in one of the adjacent newer buildings. Ocean view would cost you extra fee, but what is a vacation when you can't get rested! And if you are driving, self- parking is located a bit far adjacent to Princess Kaiulani, about 5-10 minute walk depending on which floor you parked. You could use hotel Valet service for extra fee, but the daily self-parking fee is included in the Resort Fee that you would have to pay anyways, so I suggest you get the best out of your money! The air conditioner would cool to 79 degrees if set for 65, meaning it had to be on full blast 24/7. The toilet seat was deeply scratched and dirty- this was th only thing they addressed by replacement. We wrote an email asking for items to be addressed and were sent a response a manager would be in touch - they never were. They did not offer us our […] breakfast coupons, we had to ask. It turns out we were one short. WHen this was reported they felt they 'could not give that kind of money away' and did not replace it, nor apologize. Again, they said a manager would contact us, but nothing happened. The staff were wonderful and kind and rather surprised our stay was so sub par. Finally, NEVER stay in the Diamond Wing: It is old, our wallpaper was coming off the walls, there was a paper thin door connecting us to another room from which we heard everything, the bathroom was just a sink hanging from the wall with toilet - no counters! - and the furniture tired and scuffed. The view was lovely, but this they cannot ruin through poor service. Please think twice before using this hotel and their others at Waikiki - they own every hotel save the Outrigger series, so be careful of awarding bad service with your hard earned pay. Lastly, our package stated we would forfeit the entire weeks stay if we left the hotel. This turned out to be sad because we would have left upon seeing it if we could. They had our reservation and money for 5 weeks and we got stuck in a dump. Read more

The only thing that resembled a Westin was the bed. The bathroom was so small I had to straddle the toilet to put on my makeup and when you sat on it your back hit the counter, and the sink was old and stained. The room was tiny and had no balcony. Our room was in the older part of the hotel facing Kalakaua Ave. There was a lot of street noise that even the air conditioner couldn't drown out. There was also a lot of rattling from the a/c until. I contacted the concierge to have maintenance fix it. Nothing was done after the first request. When I followed up the next day I was told that the issue […] was fixed which, of course, it was not. After the second request, the maintenance staff did fix the problem. Also, requested 2x that the loose & wobbly bathroom outlet (not switch plate) be fixed. That was never addressed/fixed. Charging $50 per day for 2 chairs & an umbrella on the beach is outrageous. Guests are charged a resort fee of $25 per day, which should include the price of beachside chairs. Also felt that the hotel was geared to attracting and catering to foreign guests (i.e., Japanese tourists/ weddings). It would of been nice to know about the $25/d hotel charge ahead of getting there. Pool area is too small for this size hotel, otherwise very nice. You should definitely get an ocean view room. There were 2 bums sleeping on the ground outside window, so don't get on ground floor either.
