"A Great Stay"
Overall this was a very satisfying stay. The staff was friendly and the facilities were great. One or two small service glitches (50 minutes to wait for ice) didn't detract from a very nice experience. Our junior suite was virtually on the beach and was perfect for us. Room was large, spacious, bright and clean. The little kitchenette was a great part […] of the room and allowed us to have breakfast, snacks, drinks etc. in our room or the very nice patio. "Beautiful facility setting and beach"
About half the food and beverage staff were disinterested in doing their jobs, very slow, unattentive and aloof, while the other half were very friendly and accomodating. Food and beverages were pricey, but was to be expected. Food was very good, but certainly not exceptional. Office, room service and grounds keepers all friendly and accomodating. I highly recommend La Samanna to all. It is a mere 12 minute drive from the airport and on a private 2-mile beach which is spectacular. The staff couldn't be nicer and the views were breathtaking. The beach is serene and secluded. The water crystal clear and they have plenty of activities right off the beach. The drinks were a bit pricey. We ate at […] local restaurants so can't comment on the food. They supplied one outlet with a built in transformer which was great for charging devices. Free wifi in rooms and on the beach. Only negative was the bed was not the most comfortable and especially the pillows!!! I would definitely recommend they invest in some softer pillows! Overall, such a wonderful trip and I would go back in a heartbeat. Thank you to all the staff! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

La Samanna is a beautiful hotel in a beautiful location . It's quiet and peaceful. Only heard the sound of the ocean in the daytime as well as the night. Beautiful boutique hotel. Staff was friendly enough but did not necessarily go out of their way. Rooms were nice and clean, nice amenities. Pool area and attendants were great probably my fav part. "Excellent St Marteen Hotel"
La Samanna is not too arguably the nicest hotel in St Marteen. It's located in the "Beverly Hills" area of the island, just over the Dutch/French border. Convenient to the airport (just ~10 minute drive), La Samanna is nicely secluded. The hotel has its own secure beachfront. The room we stayed in (a deluxe ocean suite, second story) had an amazing […] view of the water and was also close by to the beach bar/restaurant. The grounds are also beautiful. Pros: Secluded, secure beach with clear, blue waters and fine white sand. Excellent snorkeling right on beach. Waters have plenty of fish and some nice rock formations. Hotel provides gear for free. Water sports (wave running, jet skiing, etc) also available. Excellent beach bar with plenty of food and drink choices. Accommodating, friendly staff all around - desk, bar, restaurant, housekeeping. Onsite fitness center, business center, spa. Beautiful, secure grounds. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"I loved the hotel"
I loved everything the hotel is beautiful, the service is amazing, the food delicious... the view was what I loved the most... Great beaches!!! Friendly people.Genuine Expedia guest review
I loved this resort! We visited to celebrate my birthday and it was just wonderful. The staff was always friendly and over the course of our visit, we had our favorites - some of whom have been mentioned in other reviews. We visited in the "shoulder season" of mid-June which is not the busy/heavy tourist time although the hotel was still fairly full. […] Even with the number of guests onsite, we never felt as though we were on top of others - there was still a feeling of relative privacy. As other reviewers have mentioned, there wasn't a lot of variety in the dining options - especially for dinner - but everything on the menu was fabulous. We were never served anything that wasn't prepared very well - including our private dinner on the beach. My only disappointment was the breakfast - the buffet was the only option and it was rather expensive if you just wanted a small bite and a cup of coffee. I highly recommend Pablo for a bike tour (arranged by the hotel) and visiting Orient Beach's Bikini Beach. My only regret is that we ran out of time to do everything we wanted to do. I could easily see us going back - it was a really special place for a vacation. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Good location, poor service"
La Samanna is located about 15 minutes from the airport directly on the beach. However, it is fairly remote from other destinations in St Martin and you'll want to rent a car to get around easily. We had trouble finding the hotel in our car as the staff at the rental car company and several other places we stopped had no idea where the hotel was. The […] hotel's web site does not currently supply driving directions from the airport, and they list a PO Box on their own web site. When we did arrive, the manager at the desk was shocked that we had so much trouble finding them. We should have looked for the small sign on the ground behind a tree and some garbage collection dumpsters indicating the turn. Unfortunately, the service disappointments at this gorgeous hotel and location continued time and again throughout our stay. We were forced to order room service after missing the beach bar on arrival by a couple of minutes. Dinner is only available until 9PM at the main dining room. We cancelled our reservation at Le Cave following this experience. To be clear, we did not expect this hotel to be cheap. However, when you are paying the room rates listed on this site and the costs on their bar and dining menus, you expect a certain level of service to convey. Unfortunately, you'll get much more hospitable service elsewhere on the island. Our concerns were raised to management during our stay, and were not addressed with even a passing concern. Relaxing, peaceful, classy, but very expensive! ($35 breakfast buffet)I was initially put off as we arrived. I booked this trip sight unseen through expedia and relied on others reviews to make my decision. I thought that the facility was in a beautiful location with the most beautiful beach I have ever seen, but felt that the room(wifi problems, lights […] not working, no turndown service our first night( and some outside areas(walk to beach big tube exposed and rock erosion made it a tricky walk from our suite to the beach) were in need of repair. "OUTSTANDING RESORT SUGGESTED BY EXPEDIA!!"
I have never been the type (NOT saying its right) to take the time to write testimonials or post reviews. However having lectured on customer service in my former career and based on my recent stay with my wife to the wonderful LaSamanna resort I have to take a minute to provide you with feedback. My wife and I have been fortunate (after many years […] of hard work) to have traveled all over the world and stay at some of the beautiful hotels/resorts. However I have to tell you that our recent stay at the LaSamanna has to rank in the top spot. Obviously it's in the most beautiful destination in the Caribbean and on the best beach in St. Martin but more and most importantly your people running this resort are second to none. Not sure how much world class training you are doing or what methods but whatever it is Don't stop. What a bunch of wonderful and professional people. Romel (@ the beach Bar) (Leo II - everywhere Ha! - Katlyn @ reception ) Emmanuel, Anis, and SO ON, I can't believe how everyone is so ready to drop everything they are doing to satisfy your guests every need. "Great hotel; food and service disappointing"
The room and beach at La Samanna were outstanding. Unfortunately the restaurant was extremely disappointing - the food was mediocre at best, the prices were very high and the service was poor. La Samanna is not an inexpensive place to stay. I booked it because I wanted a first class experience and was prepared to pay for it. My advice to La Samanna: […] if you want to attract first class customers and charge first class prices, get your act together and upgrade your restaurant and staff training. At these prices, customers don't expect to be compromise or be disappointed in any way. On the bright side, we found many good off-resort restaurants and did have a very enjoyable trip to St. Martin. "La Samanna... paradise in St-mArtin"
I have stayed in many different resorts (well over 10 in the Caribbeans) and I can say, without hesitation, that La Samanna is one of the best resort out there! The service was superb; the staff is extremely attentive! I stopped by every day to ask for help from the concierge (thanks Roberta!), and every time I was received with a smile. Courteous, […] friendly, helpful, are only a few words that described my experience! The restaurant and the selection was excellent. I met the chef while entering the restaurant and he offered to prepare any thing I would like! I was craving steak that night and he prepared it with a piece of "foie gras"... simply excellent! "Wonderful hotel, wonderful location."
My partner and I went to the hotel to celebrate our anniversary weekend. The hotel itself is in a stunning location with the most amazing views, by far one of the most beautiful parts of the island. Everything in the hotel was 5 star quality. The only complaint I would make is the staff in the beach bar which we used for lunch on 2 occasions. I am in […] service myself and therefore when paying that much for a 5 star accommodation my expectations are high. I was disappointed with the food and service at the beach restaurant and feel a little bit more training of the staff wouldn't go amiss. I also treated my partner to a private Caligula dinner. The setting was phenomanal and the waiter we had was excellent, the only qualm was the food. Paying that much for a dinner I expected the food to be amazing. The platters were shockingly huge and very wow factor, however all were cold and not really the quality i would expect. In my opinion they should make the platters much smaller but better quality, or serve food to order that way it could be completely fresh. All in all the hotel was wonderful and i would definitely love to go back, there are just a few little issues they need to brush up on and they would be 100% 5 star. The resort is absolutely gorgeous. Rent a car from the hotel and did our little day trips around the island, there is no need to rent from the airport. The hotel has a ton of amenities. My fiance and i enjoy traveling and the hotel exceeded our needs all around. The villas looked amazing and we might consider going with a large group and staying on the cliff side.

We recently stayed at La Samanna for 3 nights in a 1 bedroom beachfront suite. From the minute you arrive in the beautiful entry lobby, you know what to expect from your stay, and La Samanna and the great people that work there do not disappoint. If you're going to stay in St Martin, there is no place else to stay. We are very much looking forward to another return trip to La Samanna.
"Pretty much paradise"
I stayed on the Dutch side for 3 days at villas with a large group of girls and decided to extend my trip for 2 days for some relaxation before heading home. It was completely worth it. The views are the best I had seen on the entire island with calm waters (private beach), no seaweed (this was an issue on most beaches), good snorkeling (free and better than creole rock) and excellent staff. I received attentive service without it feeling intrusive and the rooms are luxurious and on the beach. The food was mediocre (though I enjoyed the lobster), but everything else was superb. As someone who stays in a variety of upscale hotels for work, this place blew me away and I highly recommend staying here. Treat yourself.

We stayed at La Samanna for three nights in one of the 1 bedroom beachfront suites. Room B10 to be exact. The room was amazing. The patio opened onto the beach, which was about 50 feet awaas outstanding. Approximately 650 sq feet. The living room had comfortable sofas and a large flat screen TV. There was a small kitchen which had necessary amenities:(including pots/pans), large refrigerator, and an espresso maker. The bed was was soft, but comfortably firm. The bathroom had double sink vanity, large closet, and large rain shower. FInished all with light marble. We did have a problem with the sink drains. Had to call the front desk twice about it, the issue was never really fixed. The patio opened onto the beach, which was about 50 feet away. Each morning, we ate the breakfast buffet, which was above average. The selections varied little, but there was more than enough choice. There was a limited a la carte menu option which included crepes, waffles, pancakes, or eggs to order. We did eat dinner at the terrace overlooking the alcove (Trellis). The food was at underwhelming however the foie gras was notably delicious. The beach is beautiful however has a serious flaw. There are large rocks for the first 6 feet of the ocean, which can make getting into the rather a challenge for some. I did snorkel about the beach and saw a large variety of fish species. But this beach is not the calm, tranquil water you would imagine for a Caribbean island. Service: Generally was good. We didn't have to rely on the front desk or concierge for much though. As mentioned above, they could not fix the draining problem in the sinks. Value: We went during the off season and got a packaged deal through a travel agent. We were able to get the ocean front room with free daily breakfast for about $500/night. During peak season, the price is substantially higher. In summary, La Samanna is a very nice hotel, perhaps even one of the best on the island. However I do think it's a bit overpriced for what you get. We also stayed at the Westin Dawn Beach, which was not as nice but considerably cheaper.
"Beautiful resort but could use some TLC"
08/25/14 Mike4281 Litchfield, Connecticut
We stayed at the La Samanna during our honeymoon last August. It was a beautiful property. Lobby and entrance was fairly new and gorgeous. Our room was ocean front and just steps away from the beach (white sand and gorgeous water), which was very convenient. Very friendly staff and the grounds were well care for. Saw a few macaws which were beautiful. The infinity pool however was a bit outdated but maybe not so fair since we stayed at the viceroy in Anguilla days prior to this stay where everything was new and luxurious. Nice hotel but not quite a 5 star property to me.
"Very Good Service and Lovely Property But Value Proposition Lacking"
08/24/14 WeloveCarib New York
La Samanna is a lovely place with excellent service from a carribean perspective. However, being priced to perfection, when the service or room quality disappoints, it can really sting. Room Quality: we booked an ocean view suite under the "suite sensations" offer and ended up changing rooms. Both rooms were well appointed. Our first suite had sliding doors with slats that separated the living and bedroom area similar to a junior suite in many hotels, with no noise insulation from one room to another. The room was large, however, and as indicated on the accomodation section of the website had a large updated bathroom with a separate shower and bath. When we asked for a room with a real door separating the living room and bedroom we were first told there were none, and that if we wanted a door that closes we'd need to upgrade to a 2 bedroom suite at close to twice our room rate. Ultimately the hotel accommodated us and moved us to another 1 bedroom ocean view suite with a separate door (then why did they tell us there were none?) . The second suite was nicely decorated with a lovely terrace overlooking the ocean. i would note however that the second suite was approx 45 square meters (versus the 70-75 meters of the first room indicated on the website for an ocean view suite). Additionally the second suite had a compact bathroom with a combined bath shower that was difficult to access (versus the promised separate shower as per the website). Also drawers were scarce with two small drawers in the bedroom and one in the bathroom (we used the nightstand drawers for clothes as well). For purposes of truth in advertising (and to avoid disappointment) Belmond would best be served by changing the website language to indicate a range of sizes and bathroom quality for any given room category. Service: everyone tries very hard and there is genuine warmth. Service is very attentive. However, the policies upon which the staff is acting are muddled (this may be due to 10 or 15 different managers who have managed the hotel in the last 25 years). A few examples: first I was told by the concierge via email that the only breakfast available was a $35 buffet (excluding tip and tax), and if we just wanted a la carte coffee and yogurt we'd have to order room service and could not eat in the dining area. Management reinforced this upon check-in. For a family of three to spend $120 on yogurt and cereal is ridiculous. Like most of the families we met, we prefer to go to breakfast. Also like the other families we met, we dont' want to feel "had". When we arrived at breakfast the first day maitre d at breakfast indicated there is a small menu where one could order eggs, wafflles, or pancakes for $16. Get your act together folks and have the right information available (it would also help to have an a la carte breakfast menu). Additionally outside our room on the beach in the middle of our stay a couple started to use a boom box blasting Van Morrison all day and rendering our terrace (and the part of the beach where we usually parked ourselves) un-usable. when i called and complained i was told that hotel policy permitted this. when i called the manager she said they'd be asked to turn it down. when they weren't asked to turn it down, i complained at the front desk and the concierge said boom boxes are permitted. subsequently the senior concierge said music must be on quietly enough so that the person at the next umbrella can't hear. We were very surprised (as were the other neighbors who were quite upset about the noise) that La Samanna would permit this, but at any rate the hotel needs a clear policy. Location: as of this writing part of this lovely beach has floated away and there is a steep 45 degree incline that separates the water from the beach....its not a gentle place to bring your baby or toddler to play...but still a nice beach. Management indicated the beach will correct itself by November...and we saw the far part of the beach start to look better toward the end of our stay. Value: the week before we came we stayed at a Relais and Chateau hotel. Very expensive but unbelieveable service. La Samanna room rates decline during the summer but all other prices (eg food and services ) remain the same. So a diet coke at the beach is $7 plus a $1 tip, ie $8. Additioanally we were given two or three regular coffee pods for the coffee maker in our room for our 1 week stay. Each additional coffee pod is $4.00. I have never been charged before for the use of an in-room coffee maker. At the very least the hotel should not deviate from standard US guest policy (free coffee in room) as it services primarily a US customer base. Finally an extra cot in the room for a child cost $75 per night (free at the Relais and chateau resort and a max of $25 per night in other fine hotels). The pricing of these types of items is excessive, so the value component is weak. Despite the capable wallets of most of the guests, no one wants to feel like a sucker. So we consider the value proposition to be weak. Reply, Reply All or Forward | More
"Beautiful resort but not what we expected"
08/20/14 Deanna R Mesa, Arizona
We spent the last 2 days of our St. Maarten vacation here. Our room was fabulous, ocean front 1 bedroom. We were very disappointed in the food here. We felt it was VERY overpriced ($35pp for standard buffet breakfast of premade eggs, pancakes, meats, pastries, etc..Lunch - $24 hamburger, $17 hotdog, $9 bottled water) We felt the staff at the beach pool should ask the people in the lounge chairs if they needed any drinks/food. We had to walk to the bar and order drinks. We waited 1 hour for our ribs and hot dog to arrive and once we finally got it, the ribs were not great and the hot dog cold. Really?! The manager quickly took my cold plate and I ordered the bolognese in it's place. I expected it to be phenomenal and it was just ok. I can't recommend this hotel based on the poor value.
08/18/14 Brent H St. Martin
I am utmost stunned as to what makes this hotel 5 stars? The ice front suite was nice. That's it. It has nice rooms. When we ate at the restaurant, the food was mediocre. We asked for a high chair for our 1 year old and there was none. My one year old subsequently fell out of the chair and bruised his head. When we would go to the pool, I wondered if people had taken the day off? Nobody would come to ask if we wanted towels or refreshments. One day we found someone to asked for towels and they were hesitant because it started to sprinkle a light rain, which stopped 3 minutes later. We had better service, for that matter, service at all when we went to Orient Bay. When we did order lunch poolside, it was what I would consider on par with Applebee's or TGI Fridays in the USA. I don't mind paying top dollar for great food, but I find paying high prices for terrible food a simple theft. I've stayed in many 5 stars..Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton's and can't understand how this is 5 star. If you are truly interested in understanding what a five star accommodations look like, the principle manager at this hotel needs to do some research on other 5 star hotels. They should spend a weekend at the Ritz-Carlton in St Thomas or Grand Cayman. The staff could even learn from Frenchman's Reaf (marriot) on St Thomas or the Hyatt in Grand Cayman. Additionally, the hotel is about $300 per night overpriced considering this is a 3 to 4 star hotel, and nowhere near a 5 star. Additionally, beach is rocky and there is a 10 foot cliff of sand that you must climb up on your hands and knees to get off the beach.

This was our first trip to St. Martin and La Samanna was our first choice for our stay. We arrived by about 1pm and our room wasn't ready yet. Rudolph provided us with a few complimentary glasses of wine and an upgrade to the ocen view suite with the upstairs terrace. All staff was very helpful and so nice. Our room was fantastic and the rental car was easy to arrange on property. I was a bit surprised by the number of families with multiple children under the age of 7 or 8. I would hesitate to bring such young children to a resort that is really geared towards older kids and definitely adults. Plus many women were topless on the beach even though it is not legal on the island. Not offensive to me personally but quite a surprise to young families. There are several cats on property that are unobtrusive and generally not afraid of people and quite well behaved. We opted out of the breakfast buffet and meal plan but we tried it once and It was very good. It was the best choice for those that wanted some of everything. The food at the restaurants on property was very good and beach service was great. Beds were fantastic and housekeeping was very accommodating. We felt safe on property (security was top notch) and the view was fantastic!!
"One my best hotel experiences ever! Want to go back soon."
08/06/14 Scott69 West Palm Beach, Florida
We arrived late at night, hadn't had dinner yet and planned to just go to bed, wake up early for breakfast. No need! The hotel knew we were arriving late and had a large plater of food waiting for us, free! The room which was a one bedroom suite with roof top terrace was fabulous. It had a gorgeous view, great shower, clean, stylish and large. The service at the hotel was one of the best we have ever experienced. Buffet breakfast which was included in our rate was very good. The beach had been eroded a bit but that often happens most places in the Caribbean at some point, usually they are temporary but you may want to inquire before booking. The sea was calm with a beautiful light blue color. We liked it so much we had hoped to come back in a month but unfortunately we couldn't. We will be back soon.
