Hanbury Manor is a splendid old building with great character which has been extended in a very sympathetic way. It stands in lovely grounds within walking distance (under 2 miles) of the town of Ware and onward rail connections to London. There is a golf course (closed due to snowy conditions) and a health club which we did not use but will appeal […] to many. Our room in the modern wing was bright, clean, big and quiet. It was also handily placed for the Oakes restaurant. The highlight of the the hotel is the old hall itself and the comfortable Oak room and bar. The only thing to note is that things - especially alcohol - come at quite a price, but that may be expected in this class of hotel. It snowed heavily during our stay which made for ideal photography opportunities. Unfortunately it also meant that some of the corridors and public areas were rather cold, but the log fire was the perfect antidote to this. Read more

Another great stay. A few minor quibbles: no semi-skimmed milk at breakfast, the bar maid wasn't attentive enough - there were only a few guests in the bar but I had to go and find her everytime I wanted a drink, the steam room an sauna rooms need to be updated as does the jacuzzi. We spent a wonderful night at the Hanbury Manor, the facitilites are fantastic - from the Oak Hill restaurant (lunch and breakfast were delicious!!!!) to the spa, snooker room and various ornate rooms throughout the building - We had a lovely afternoon tea on the Sunday and the waitress was very accommodating at providing us with afternoon cakes at […] 12pm before the opening time at 2pm - greatly appreciated! The only slight problem was as the pool is not supervised children do get a bit out of hand jumping and splashing - 7pm+ is adults only but it does ruin the atmosphere - would recommend maybe one watchful eye to keep an order on things. Couldn't fault this hotel. Pricey but worth it from the quality of the food & wine to the attentive service. It is a beautiful hotel with plenty of space to have a quiet drink. For a special occasion, we will definitely be back.

The price was amazing for the romance package at this grand manor. It was quite beautiful among the changing leaves sitting far off the beaten path. We decided to stay an extra night because of the atmosphere. We stayed in a deluxe room in the main manor house and were very comfortable. The fresh flowers in the room were beautiful. The concierge was […] very helpful in advising us with maps and ideas. The food in the grill was less than adequate--steaks were gristley and tough--service was very slow as well. However, in the upscale restaurant in the library, service and atmosphere was quite lovely and food was chef prepared quality--but pricey! This the 2nd time we have stayed at hanbury manor. All the staff are well presented and extremly polite the courtyard an surrounding are beautiful as is the actual hotel. We also had a lovely relaxing day in the spa which you have free use of it includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna. There are chairs around the pool if you just wish […] to relax and also a quiet area where you can sit an have a coffee from the machine etc. We didn't take our gym things with us but there is also a gym. Breakfast was delicious with lots to choose from. We will return every year to celebrate out wedding anniversary. Read more

We expected a five star hotel for a romantic getaway. What we got was much more. The staff where exceptional, very helpful and friendly. The room was very spacious and so comfortable, we didn't want to leave. The service, including room service was spot on. Everyone connected to the hotel made sure our stay was a pleasant one.

A stunning setting, this hotel is set in beautiful grounds, the health club is impressive (although avoid after school hours when the pool was full of noisy children) and the room we had (Deluxe) was very comfortable and quiet with a huge bed. Whenever I go to a hotel there is a certain amount of excitement especially if it is supposed to be a quiet night away. If that's what you want this is not the hotel for you. It was mobbed with families ( nothing wrong there ) but it was not a quiet getaway. The swimming pool was more like a pool at an overcrowded public pool on a hot afternoon in the […] middle of school holidays. The breakfast area was like one or two eating areas after plane delays at Heathrow. The overall service was poor. Our nights sleep was terrible because we were put on a main route through to the "spa" and family restaurant/breakfast area. So the best we got was about 5 hours sleep. And at 9am house keeping decided to vacuum outside our room ( on a national holiday btw ). And so on..... Told the management who obviously had the same lack of authority and interest as the staff who worked for them. So if you want a nice break at a quiet hotel in the country DO NOT CHOOSE THIS ONE! This Marriott is beautiful, and even has it's own chapel which is something to see. Very old and grand, clean and friendly staff. Dog friendly, but there is nowhere to sit inside with the dogs if you want a drink. But they did welcome us and the dogs and made us feel very welcome and even showed us a choice of rooms. My only annoyance was when I wanted […] to take a coffee upstairs and the late night reception staff told me they would bring it up, when I said I'd wait they said no, they would bring it up, so I let them, and they literally followed me up, and then charged me £3.50 on top of my coffee charge for the privilege. Small amount but a little annoying when I was there waiting for it. The hotel itself is relatively expensive, but it is beautiful, and boasts wonderful scenery, and the little pub at the end of the road does wonderful meals. Would definitely visit again. Read more

My wife and I stayed at this lovely hotel last weekend and had a really fantastic stay. The staff were incredibly helpful and warm (even if the weather wasn't - it snowed!) and went out of their way to accomodate our requests. In particular, we asked for a variation to the vegetarian option at the main restuarant which was happily met (including the […] chef coming out to chat to us about our preferences!). The food in the Zodiac restuarant was really delicious and beautifully presented with the staff extremely attentive. We had a great table just by the fire in the restuarant and continued our evening in front of the roaring log fire in the Oak Hall over a cup of tea. The spa was everything we had hoped for although the jacuzzi was a bit small with not very powerful jets! We liked the relaxation area with free tea/coffee etc and a good selection of papers/magazines. The grounds are very pretty and we were lucky enough to be able to wander across the golf course as it was too cold for anyone to be playing (but please note if the weather is better there is less area for a wander, although in the Summer months we are sure the walled garden would be very pretty). Our room was very comfortable and generally met our request for a quiet room in terms of distance from the function rooms etc - however, the walls are far from soundproof as we heard every squeal and shriek from the family with three children in the room next door. We had dinner in the Oak Grill on the second night which was okay but not up to the standard of the Zodiac, but I guess you get what you pay for (it was less than half the price!). This is a great place to visit and just under an hour from North London where we live - highly recommended! By the way, we got a special offer on the price as it was a winter promotion - we expect it may be a bit more pricey in the Summer months! Read more

This is not exactly the most convenient location as you will need a car to get anywhere so unless you have one, you will be captive to the restaurants in the hotel. that being said, the food at the hotel restaurants were pretty decent, especially the buffet breakfast which has a huge spread and decent quality. No complimentary bottled water or internet […] so that works if you really want a getaway. The health club is complimentary with a decent gym and a nice heated pool and separate heated jacuzzi. This lovely old manor-house hotel has lots of character in the central building. The newer wing is fairly bland, but this only contains the bedrooms, and once inside our room, it was pleasantly decorated. But why was it arranged so the TV couldn't be seen from the bed? And why do they have to provide a dumbed-down remote for the TV? There were plenty […] of aux inputs round the back, but no way of selecting them.. so rather than plugging your laptop in and watching your own film, you'd have to pay to watch one of theirs.. The cost to use the internet is more than I pay for a month at home. Why isn't free these days? You wouldn't expect to pay for water or electricity usage! The request for a slightly later check-out was met with flat refusal. The grounds are lovely, but your enjoyment of them will be limited as the paths are "for golfers only". These tiny little things just added up to tarnish the sort of welcoming, warm feeling I've had from the really great hotels I've stayed at. Read more
