"Cheap and great location"Reviewed by Henriette of "Odense, Denmark" on Apr 1, 2012
We spent 14 night at this hotel and enjoyed it very much. The beds are done and the towels changed every day. Good value for the money. Also we had a kitchen, so we cooked our own breakfast - the dishes were done immediately. The only bad thing was the noise from the garbage trucks starting at 7 a.m. The location is good as well, bus stop is just outside the door and all the shops are a short walk away. The beach is only 10 minutes away.

Tired hotel but clean, quiet and brilliantly located especially if with a car. Breakfast is basic to say the least but it works. Overall we were pleasantly surprised but don't expect anything fancy.
"Aston wikiki beach"Reviewed by Steve M of "London UK" on Nov 13, 2011
Having read the previous reviews on hotels.com, checked all the hotel details, and 'walked' round the location using google streetview, what we found when we arrived was that "it was as it said on the tin". The room was pleasant and in-keeping with the class of hotel, the service was 'good to excellent', and 'everything worked'. The breakfast arrangements are unusual in that rather than having a high cost catering service, there is a buffet-style facility where you collect as much food as you want but then either hunt round for a table to sit at by the pool, take the food back to your room or, as the hotel positions it, "eat it over the road on the beach". However, it does "work" as a solution provided you are not fussed about not having your breakfast served in a normal breakfast room / restaurant. The only drawback we found was that the range of foods available was adequate but probably not as extensive as other places. So do not expect to get a full English or full Continental! What we assume would have been the hotel restaurant is given over to Tiki's Bar and Grill. It is at the front of the hotel on the pool deck over-looking the beach. It does not do breakfast but does do lunch & dinner. Prices are average and quality of food is good. They have live music every evening and atmosphere, ambiance etc is also good. It is open to non-residents and generally does a good trade every evening. Good for both eating and / or just a drink. Currently you can only get wifi access by the pool. In-room Internet is via cable. However the wifi by the pool is free to use and there are sockets for power (and yes, you're right - having power sockets by the poolside would probably not be allowed in the EU!). The pool area is in shade until after 2pm and only in full sun late afternoon. So the beach is generally better for sunbathing. Loungers and sunshades can be hired at the beach. Rooms on the East facing Diamond Head have balconies but not ones that are big enough to sit o
"Last night in Hawaii"Reviewed by Mary R of "Woking, Surrey, Uk" on Nov 7, 2011
This was the perfect hotel choice for a very early departure from our two weeks visiting three of the islands. Clean, convenient, and comfortable. The airport shuttle was on time and the driver helpful with our masses of luggage. We could not have asked for more.

Waikiki established its reputation as a getaway when the Moana Surfrider opened its doors in 1901. Today, more than 30,000 hotel rooms are packed in the skyscrapers along the golden sands of Waikiki Beach. At the end of Waikiki, Diamond Head towers as an enduring landmark. West of Waikiki, Pearl Harbor offers a somber testament to history and the victims of World War II.

"The Royal Hawaiian - on the beach in Waikiki"
From the moment we stepped into the hotel we were extremely impressed with the service, professional and very helpful. The suite was tastefully decorated and being an older hotel the bathroom was small which we were expecting. A little noisy at night especially when a security guard was persistent in requesting a guest turn down their TV, I think he […] woke up half the floor.Overall a memorable hotel to visit. Read more

"over rared"
This is older hotel , beach front location , how ever rating should only be 4 star at the most . Service desk short of help , only one person , and more customers have to wait . When I check in I ask for twin , but they only have king size bed , but he promised to send extra bed . The extra bed never came . Any way knowing all of this I will book another […] hotel . "Great location!!!"
The Royal Hawaiian had the old world feel and architecture I love, not to mention all the shopping you could imagine steps away. It is an iconic location, yet I cant help but feel short changed on the room service. The menu is limited and overpriced! We ordered from room servcie a bottle of vodka listed as 750 ml for $140 instead they gave us a 1 liter […] bottle at a cost of $465 wihtout mentoning the difference in size or price. We then ordered a second bottle and did not notice the difference until we received a room service bill for over $1,000!! Read more

"The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Waikiki"
Beautiful old world charm, right in the middle of Waikiki. It stands alone in a lush oasis of immaculately maintained tropical gardens when all around are high rise hotels. Minutes to the beach and stores on Kalakaua Avenue. Stayed in the old section of the hotel (not the tower), lovely room with a walk in wardrobe, sensational view of Diamond Head, […] partial view of the beach and the lush gardens. Top class service and very friendly staff, from management to housekeeping. I loved coming "home" after full days of sightseeing and shopping and enjoying a coffee on the verandah. Also has a spa, expensive, but worth it if you need a little pampering. Spoil yourself and stay at The Royal Hawaiian and enjoy the luxury. Read more
"Luxurious"
This was our second visit to the Royal Hawaiian. We again stayed in a Garden View Room, located in the original building. We considered ‘upgrading’ (at an additional cost) to an ocean view room in an adjacent building, but it lacked the ambiance and luxurious feel of the classic older building, so we reverted to our original Garden View booking. The […] staff at the Royal Hawaiian have a way of making guests feel special. Whether it’s their greeting, making an outside reservation or a special request in the restaurant (the maitre’d reviewed his records and established of his own accord that we’d dined there two years ago). We wanted to conclude our four week holiday in the United States in style and we were not disappointed. Read more

"Great Honolulu Experience"
Spent over a week with family at this hotel and it was great. Location is brilliant, walk to everything, beach setup is good, and the hotel building/ambience is supurb. No access to wi-fi at beach restuarant and beach itself was the biggest drawback, and very annoying.
"The Royal Hawaiian Resort...too Expensive!!"
The hotel was way tooooo expensive for its quality.. We had ants in the room, and the service response to come spray for it was too slow ...Also, we had to pay a mandatory $20 per day for services we did not use, like parking, breakfast for kids and internet...You think with the high rate per day we would have gotten all this for free anyway!!!

"THE place to stay in Waikiki"
Fantastic hotel in all respects - a peaceful and beautiful oasis in otherwise overly-busy Waikiki that oozes Hawaiian tradition without being stuffy. Stayed a week in a junior suite in the original building and loved it. Be sure to get breakfast included. Outstanding food, wide selection, lovely setting and a great value. Have lived in Hawaii and visited […] many times, but this was my first time in RH - compares very favorablty to the also terrific but more expensive Halekulani. We enjoyed the stay even tho it rained the entire week. Can't wait to go back. Read more
"Royal Hawaiian - Return visit disappointed us."
We had a great 10 day stay last year at the Royal and were keen to get back, however we were disappointed this time around. The room we were given was not up to standard of 5 STAR property. We had a smell from bathroom drains, an ant inferstation around the bedside tables and very meager housekeeping service. After 2 nights we were moved to another […] room which was much better including the housekeeping service. Its disappointing to have to request bottled water when it should be provided and bed turn down service also had to be repeatedly requested?? If i wanted 3 star service I would not stay and pay for a % star hotel. Sorry to say that the second visit to R. Hawaiian was disappointing. Read more

"The Royal Hawaiian Hotel - DO NOT STAY HERE!!!"
The hotel didn't live up to my expectation. They overcharge people for the hotel that they actually are. DO NOT GO HERE, YOU WILL WASTE YOUR MONEY! I had to change rooms twice during my stay because I was VERY unhappy with them. The first room was dark and with the layout I couldn't even watch tv from my bed. I upgraded (had to pay ALOT more than I […] already had paid) and didn't even get what I asked for and then had to change yet again. This hotel does have great restaurants, but don't let the beachfront fool you. It is super crowded all the time and if you want to relax and enjoy a LUXURY hotel-do not come here. Read more

"Royal Hawaiian Hotel"
The rooms are too dark - not enough lamps and light in the room for reading. Also the color is too dark - not tropical and light like Hawaii should be. Brown is not a color that I associate with frowers and beautiful Hawaii landscapes.
"Royal Hawaiian - The Good and Bad"
The "grande dame" has had a facelift but not all the rooms. Skip the Tower Rooms which are not renovated and head right to the historic rooms which have been refurbished. But you will sacrifice room size, bathroom size and lanai (in most cases). However, The Royal Hawaiian provides excellent service with twice daily room cleaning, outstanding breakfast […] - do opt to include this luxurious meal at the Oceanfront Lanai - and a sandy beach with plenty of lounges, umbrellas and staff to place them exactly where you want them. After seeing all the hotels in Wakikii Beach, I'm glad I chose The Royal Hawaiian for our 7-day stay despite my initial disappointment with the room size. We were subsequently relocated and upgraded after a bit of a runaround which the staff apologized for with a complimentary bottle of wine. They do know the meaning of customer service! Read more
"Royal Hawaiian Waikiki"
This Hotel has huge potential, good size rooms, brilliant location, bathroom too small, friendly staff. Breakfast is not buffet type so I went to the nearby Sheraton which is part of the group and could be charged back to our room. I think this could be a true 5 star with some minor improvements. Hotel not cheap, but I guess it is the location
"no place to get cover"
the pools were amazing...but if you have any idea that you may need or want to get out of the sun while spending the day at the pools... cough up $350.00 for a cabanna. I was so disappointed in this. The adult pool has no umbrellas to use. As we are all told to protect against over exposure to the sun at this place you will need to retreat to your hotel […] room. Hawaii...spent indoors... I don't think so. Read more
"Lovely experience"
We traveled to Honolulu with our daughter, son-in-law and 5 month old grandson. The Royal Hawaiian was a perfect choice for our stay. The location, a calm oasis in the hubbub of Waikiki, was wonderful. We stayed in the older, historic section of the hotel and loved the high ceilings, woodwork, etc. The bathroom was on the small side, but beautifully […] appointed. We didn't spend too much time in the room with the gardens and beach beconing! The beach was beautiful and access to the Sheraton pool next door was helpful with an infant. The entire staff was courteous and helpful. We booked our rooms with breakfast included and that was an EXCELLENT choice. We were able to eat individually or in various groupings, depending on individual schedules, in a beautiful setting looking out toward Diamond Head. We only regret that we didn't stay long enough to try all the tempting offerings. We also ate at the restaurant in the hotel and at the bar and enjoyed the meals there. It was also easy to walk to nearby options. The Mai Tai Bar was wonderful at sunset - but during the day we enjoyed visiting and snacking at the bar even more. All in all, just a lovely experience. "Amazing time and well worth it!"
The hotel was amazing, the staff was wonderful and so kind. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. The location is great for Waikiki and very central to the attractions that make Waikiki special. I am from Hawaii and it had been a long time since I had stayed in the area becuase it was very commercial but the location of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel is […] not right on the busy street so it is very peaceful. We enjoy walking and everything we wanted to do was in close proximity to the hotel which made it that much nicer. Read more

"The Royal Hawaiian"
Perhaps the nicest hotel we have ever stayed in. Romantic, Comfortable, Nostalgic, great staff in the heart of a beautiful area. What more is there?
My wife and I loved this hotel. We booked an Ocean View Junior Suite in the recently remodeled old section of the hotel. We had a great view of Diamond Head and Waikiki beach. The included breakfasts were fantastic. The entertainment at the Mai Tai bar was wonderful. The gardens were beautiful and very Tropical and to top it all off was the Royal's […] private beach on Waikiki with their own Umbrellas and lounge chairs. We'll be back again soon. Read more
"Too expensive for the small rooms"
in comparision to a Banyan Tree Hotel or a Four Seasons Hotel, or Sangri La or Mandarin or Raffles Hotel they are far away to be called a 5 star. The rooms are too small, the bathrooms are a joke how small they are. Food was outstanding. Service hit or miss, Pool way too small for a big Hotel,
"Outstanding hotel, terrible location"
This place is gem. Recently remodeled, fantastic staff, and beautiful rooms. Azure, the best restaurant on the island, is there with meals worth every penny they charge! The beach is the best I've ever seen. Unfortunately the "neighbors" have overbuilt, or are overbuilding, to the point it's very difficult to find the place let alone find a parking […] spot. To make matters worse a nearby parking ramp is called the "royal hawaiian." Guess what - they don't validate parking for the royal hawaiian hotel! You have to leave your car in the nearby Sheraton hotel! Go figure. Management should have bought more land. Read more

outstanding hotel, very old style which we really liked.
"Ultimate Hawaiian landmark"
Great place to stay and experience one of the original Hawaiian landmarks.
"LUXURIOUS!"
Everything from check-in to check-out was great! All of the staff were extremely helpful and very nice! A lot of "ALOHA SPIRIT"! Would definitely recommend this hotel!
"Honeymoon haven"
We came here for our honeymoon. It has an old world charm with modern amenities. We stayed at the ocean towers room. It had a beautiful view of Waikiki beach. The service was exceptional. We got a complimentary bottle of pink champagne and free valet because we were on our honeymoon. I would defiantly recommend this place.

"Amazing Hotel"
Nice view, kind staff, convinient shopping
"Great Hotel!"
The best classic hotel, in the best location. Exemplary service and comfort. Easy to get everywhere, but no need to leave the property. Highly recommend.
"excellent service and beautiful hotel"
Had a wonderful time at this hotel and the staff were friendly and very helpful. Even though the hotel is in the middle of Waikiki it feels like you are secluded.
"Great Hotel Overall"
Although very expensive, this was lovely and historic. We upgraded for a suite since we were travelling with our 2 sons. The tower rooms have spectacular views of Waikiki beach and Diamond Head and the beds were very comfortable. Tower room guests also have access to continental breakfast and afternoon snacks daily. The wallpaper and carpet looked a […] bit worn for the price. The pool area was very nice and Royal Hawaiian guests have access to the pool next door also which has water slides for the kids. Watch when you are booking so that there is not an "extra person" charge. Read more
