"This is not a five star hotel!"
The refrigerator needs an upgrade. So old and tiny! The water is calm but not that clear. We walked along the trail in the area and saw much better beaches than this one. Service was slow. We asked for slippers. 6 hours later, they still were not there. We had to ask for them again. They gave us water late at night instead of in the afternoon.Genuine Expedia guest review
""Ocean view" rooms and parking"
Beware that the ocean view rooms do not have straight on ocean views- they are angled balcony views at best. Probably best not to spend the extra money and just opt for a garden view room, save your money for a massage!! Also - be prepared to pay big time for parking, both valet and self park are SPENDY!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Overpriced, dirty, bad service, lots of kids"
This place was a big let-down especially since we booked it because of the good reviews. When we checked in, the woman at the desk expressed that we weren't given leis when we walked in, but she never gave us any. Neither of the keys they gave us upon check-in worked, and then when I walked all the way back to the front (it's a big facility) have them […] remade, only one of the two replacements worked. Our balcony was covered in a sticky soda spill from one of the previous occupants, and when we called to ask them to mop it, no one was sent. When we called back, someone came, but he didn't mop the balcony, he swept it (we watched him from the pool), so the sticky stuff was never removed. The man that cleaned it also left the porch door open and let in a cockroach (on the wall) and a gecko that by boyfriend later found in his suitcase. Bad prices on everything and you have to pay $17 p/day to park there (no there aren't other parking options). Lots of kids (sometime unmonitored by parents) and japanese couple on their honeymoons taking pictures of the pool (still can't figure that one out). Also, there seem to be lots of people that never leave the resort. We actually heard someone say "If I could stay in this town my whole life, I would." This place is for rich people that don't care they're overpaying an arm and a leg for poor service and dirty rooms and don't want to actually experience Hawaii. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Our entire stay was fantastic! The resort is surreally beautiful. The hotel staff is genuinely friendly and the hotel is very well run. Eating onsite is very expensive, but there are stores just down the road where you can pick up groceries and snacks.Genuine Expedia guest review
Gorgeous landscaping and beautiful buildings. Nice big pool plus beach front (best of both!). Turtles hang out at one area on the property that they have roped off, so it's nice to see them close up. Staff was terrific and rooms were clean and comfortable. Restaurants on site very expensive ($125 for breakfast buffet for 4), but everyone is friendly […] and hospitable, even the towel person by the pool. Valet personnel were also very friendly and helpful to everyone. We had extra charges on our bill that someone fraudulantly charged to our room, and the front desk person was very pleasant to work with in getting them taken off. Hotel is a good 30 minutes from the airport with pretty much nothing on the road in between. Plan to drive at least 1/2 hr. to get anywhere - definitely need to rent a car here. Overall, beautiful hotel and great service; however, a bit expensive. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Perfect...as always with Fairmont!"
My husband and I just returned from 4 days on the Big Island at the Fairmont Orchid and it was exceptional! All of the staff (especially Gerald, the concierge) went out of their way to ensure a perfect vacation for us! If I have any critiques of the hotel (and trust me, these are minor and more nit-picky than anything) -- they could have used an additional […] waiter taking poolside drink orders, since it did get a bit busy later in the week; and the toiletries provided in the room had a very strong perfume scent that I didnt particularly care for. Dinner at Brown's was good -- the ahi poke wasn't the best we've had, but the surf and turf more than made up for it. Rent a beach or pool cabana for the day, complete with bottled water and snacks. P.S. -- Fairmont Presidents Club members get a discounted price, and joining presidents club is free! Make sure you join before you go! Stop by the grocery store at Shops at Mauna Lani to stock up on snacks, drinks etc (there is an empty mini fridge in each guest room); you can even get fresh sandwiches made if you are going out for the day...maybe to the volcano?? Go off property for dinner at Napua at Mauna Lani Beach Club -- amazing food, and I think the Fairmont shuttle might even take you there (we drove over, so I'm not sure). Fairmont doesn't offer coin-op laundry services, so we went over to a nearby mega-resort that had a coin-op launderette. Most likely reserved for guest use, but it wasn't posted....so we took advantage! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice Hotel, great facility."
My 8 and 10 years old boys enjoyed the Lagoon the most. We hardly used the pool, since the Lagoon is the major point of interest. Paddle boards, Kyack, sonrkling and quite beach.Genuine Expedia guest review
The hotel is right on the water, and the views are excellent. The Hotel is immaculate, and the staff was incredibly helpful, from driving tips to dining suggestions. The concierge service was excellent as well, and they really knew their stuff and were very helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review
Excellent location. Probably some of the best snorkeling on the island at the resort. Rooms are nice and relatively clean. Housekeeping was adequate but not stellar. Purchased room with partial ocean view which ended up primarily being a view of the golf course on the first floor but minimal if any ocean view. Restaurants are fair. Brown's Restaurant: […] food was fairly good; service one night was good and next time was not very good (including a fairly rude busboy). Sushi restaurant was o.k. Fitness center was very good and spa has a small central location but the various locations for massage (ocean, waterfall or spa center) are really nice (recommend the waterfall area). "Nice Hotel, Great Staff, Excellent Maintenance"
Very Nice experience in Hotel, Excellent Beaches & Views.Genuine Expedia guest review
It was a wonderful time to spend with my husband in paradise.Genuine Expedia guest review
The Fairmont Orchid is right on the ocean with a calm lagoon for snorkeling and paddle boarding. It's clean and offers everything needed and more! The food is delicious and they offer many gluten free options. It is a long walk from your room to the parking area.Genuine Expedia guest review
Overall excellent. Lagoon great for children. Grounds well designed and kept. Staff very attentive. Internet connection subpar.Genuine Expedia guest review
This place is awesome. We loved everything about it. I have read others comment about the expensive food... It's Hawaii people. It's always expensive. My only complaint is the pillows were like rocks. Still loved it here. :)Genuine Expedia guest review

"Beautiful Resort, Hard to get Ocean View from room"
This was the second time I have stayed at the Orchid and the 10th time at a Hawaiian Fairmont hotel. The hotel is very nice and the staff is friendly. The only "problem" is the horseshoe shape of the hotel makes it so that almost all rooms are perpendicular to the ocean so seeing much of the ocean from your room is difficult unless you are on the 5th […] or 6th floor or on a deluxe ocean view room close to the end of the horseshoe. Also, when booking through Expedia or other 3rd party vendors, they do not guarantee the bed type so although we booked a king size bed, we were given a room with 2 queens. "Awesome awesome awesome hotel!"
Can't wait to go back! Loved the turtles and fact that we weren't nickeled and dimed and we could sit in a chair on the beach without being charged.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Beautiful place and people--what's with the Wifi?"
We stayed for five nights and the place and people are great. Although we snorkeled all over the Big Island, we had dinner at the hotel every night because you couldn't beat the view and the food was great. Everything at the Orchid is done with great friendliness and attention to detail, but jeez, what are they thinking about to charge for Wifi BY THE […] DAY? An Idiotic and surprisingly cheap-seeming detail at a place where everything else is so lovely. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

we were there for 14 days and loved it. The staff were friendly and the concierge helped us book a nice fishing trip. We'll definitely stay there again.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel, friendly staff"
This isn't a 5 star hotel, but it's a sold 4. It's clean, has decent prices, a friendly staff, and it's a very pleasant place to be. The overall feel of the hotel is a little dated - feels very '90s - but that's okay.Genuine Expedia guest review
From the bell boy and valet drivers through and including hotel management, no one cares about your hotel "experience." For example, when we arrived, there was no one "available" to unload the 200 lbs of luggage out of our car. Then, after waiting 25 minutes for a bell boy to take our luggage to the room, I started to drag our 7 bags to the room. I […] came across a bell boy with an empty cart and I asked if I could use his cart. His response was to tell me that this resort was "full-service". What a joke. It went downhill from there. Another example is my ordering food from the menu at breakfast (as opposed to the buffet). The food servers were routinely displeased with having to actually take my food order, which was reflected in their taking 25 minutes to meet any request I made (i.e., water, ketchup, etc.). In all, my experience was terribly disappointing. My wife and I stayed at the Mauna Lani last year and their service was far superior; although, the grounds on the Fairmont are nicer. "Very nice hotel to have very good rest with ocean!"
Good location , good service, good restaurants, very professional landscape , waterfalls, very good without wall SPA, no smocking hotel and beach and Island!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great staff, totally relaxing"
We spent 7 nights and barely left the resort. It was perfect for our family with our 3 year old. the food was good and the kids menu had healthy options. The pool was a great temperature. the little lagoon was perfect for swimming with a small child. Even though we saw lots of families it was quiet.Genuine Expedia guest review
This is a very nice hotel with excellent service for the most part. When we booked we didn't know that the 1/2 Ironman was going on at the hotel. It was very crowded, but did not make us uncomfortable in any way. It actually made our stay there more interesting. I liked this hotel better than others that I have stayed in Hawaii because it was more secluded. […] I would stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Facelift for Fairmont"
The hotel is in need of a face lift. The rooms are mediocre, walking through dark carpeted halls and entering into a generic room that could be anywhere in America is disheartening. There are very few rooms that are full ocean view because the way the the buildings are placed on the property it perpendicular to the beach. There is no straight line […] to get to anything on the property. But the grounds are nice, closed in a bit. Food was expensive and mediocre except for sushi bar Noriko's. Service and staff wonderful! Beach is lovely, luckily we were there when it was not full, I imagine it would feel crowded if there were lots of people. Snorkeled there, turtles and fish most days. Water calm and clear. Beach is sandy but there is a rocky bottom in the water walking out about 20 ft, wear water shoes! Pool was lovely and large, lots of space to swim or bask. Bar close, yummy drinks. The spas services are exemplary, the physical set up is nothing to look at - but the staff and quality of the services although pricey, are incredible. I had a pedi/mani, massage, and an out of this world Lomi-lomi 80 minute massage by the waterfalls ( man made). All in all - we had a fabulous, resftful vacation, despite the room disappointment and few annoyances of the pricey add ons at the hotel, wifi, parking ... would not return to this hotel unless I had a bigger, ocean view room, my husband and I agree that the layout and the Hawaii vibe at the Mauna Kea is better! Great property! One of the nicest I have ever stayed in which is saying a lot. A meal package, if available, would be worth it.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Excellent location, though slightly flawed."
Wonderful location and exceptional hotel. Good rooms and service. Only negative is car parking charges and ridiculous cost of buffet breakfast, which slightly spoils an otherwise perfect hotel.Genuine Expedia guest review
The hotel certainly lives up to the Fairmont name. The property is beautiful. Snorkeling right off the hotel beach was fun. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet, casual dining at the restaurant by the pool as well as the fine dining restaurant: Browns Beach House. The only thing leaving a bitter after-taste is a feeling of being 'nickel & dimed'. It's not […] cheap to stay here by any means, so why the $17 daily parking charge? And why, in this day and age, is Wi-fi, at such a luxurious establishment, not complimentary? Other hotels in the area also charge for parking, some more than this one, but please somebody stop the madness! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Amazing hotel for relaxation!!!"
I stayed at this hotel with my friend as a graduation present to myself. I wanted to get away and relax. This hotel was perfect for that. I loved the private beach and all of the amazing sea turtles that swap around us. I absolutely loved the staff, especially Jose, who worked at the bar by the water. All the guys that rented out the gear by the beach […] were also super nice and very cute! We had a mishap while we visited, on our first night our server accidentally knocked over a bottle of wine all over my friend and of course she was wearing white! The hotel more than compensated for this mess especially since they could not remove the stains. This hotel is the most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed at with a fantastic staff. I would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone. It is far away from everything though, so if you are looking for fun night life, this is not a hotel for you. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Excellent hotel, but absolutely no view!!!"
I purchased Ocean View room, but I got a garden view. They call it an ocean view room, but it is a complete lie. I had to get out on my lanai and look out of corner to see the ocean. I've stayed in many luxury hotels in Hawaii, and this had the worst view with a premium price that I had to pay. If you stay here do not purchase any upgrade in view because […] you will not get it. I think they give the worst view rooms to expedia customers. Expedia should investigate this. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great anniversary trip!"
Our stay at The Fairmont Orchid was extremely pleasurable. The hotel is beautiful, and the staff was very responsive and accommodating. We had wanted a more luxurious vacation than we usually take, and the Fairmont Orchid did not disappoint. Although a bit pricey (what you would expect at this type of resort), the food was superb, and there were at […] lot of choices on site. From very upscale dining to a more casual beach-side cafe, to a deli with more reasonably-priced sandwiches, what ever the fare was, it was high quality. The staff generously put a bottle of champagne in our room when they found out it was our anniversary. The only glitch was they were demolishing a whirlpool for a few days next to the large, beautiful pool, but we just went to the resort next door and hung out there. The Fairmont offered free sea kayak and snorkeling rentals during the construction time, and ended up comping our parking for our whole stay. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Hotel staff were very accommodating. Our room was clean and very comfortable. Beautiful place all around!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The Fairmont Orchid is a great hotel on the Big Island. Comfortable rooms, lots of restaurant options, great pool and view of the ocean. It's fairly isolated, so renting a car is a good idea if you want to see the island (and car rentals are cheap). We tried a few restaurants in Kailau and were very pleased, especially Jackie Rey's and Kona Brewery. […] If you want to relax, enjoy the weather and take it easy you cannot go wrong here. "Nice Hotel but not Beautiful or Luxurious"
Overall my husband and I enjoyed our stay at the Fairmont. But I have to say this is not as well kept as other Fairmont locations I have stayed at. This hotel use to be a Ritz Carlton. Aside from changing the signs I am not sure The Fairmont has done anything since taking over the property. There has been very little attention paid to the details in […] terms of cleanliness and needed updates. There was A LOT of bird poop on all of the window and balcony ledges around the property. The grounds need some attention. There were a lot of dead patches of grass throughout the grounds. The carpets...particularly in the common areas were very worn and reminded me of an old Vegas hotel. The areas where the carpet meets the wall, and all of the corners, were black from the build up of ground in dirt. The furniture and walls in all of the common areas were badly nicked and scraped. But if you are less concerned about the hotel and plan to spend most of your time on the beach this is where The Fairmont scores some points. The beach is ideal for snorkeling. There is a manmade lagoon where the water stays very calm and clear. The giant sea turtles and schools of beautiful fish were amazing to swim with. The employees that worked on the beach were very attentive and kept the drinks and food coming. The only downside is what they call a "cabana"! For $65 a day you get wooden lawn chairs with a shade that ties down with a rope. So if you want any shade you have to pay for it. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Resort for All Age Groups"
A great place for family stays from Grandparents to toddlers due to close proximity of beach lagoon, pool and food.Genuine Expedia guest review
My husband and I island hopped here for our honeymoon... There is not much to do on the Big Island, so this resort hotel offers great amenities to enjoy. The hotel restaurant is very pricey and requires nighty reservations, we enjoyed Tommy Bahamas less than a mile away as another option and it was delicious!! The resort is absolutely stunning and HUGE!! […] The picture attached is the ire from our room at subset, live music was played at the beach and it was extremely picturesque. The Fairmont Orchid was exactly what our family needed. It was relaxed, beautiful, perfect for my 8 and 10 year old. It is pricey, but worth it. The grounds are great. "Great Hotel for All!"
This was our third trip to the Big Island in 5 years. We have always stayed on the Fairmont Orchid's Gold Floor. We are a family of four, with two girls, 11 and 13. The extra perks on the Gold Floor are worth the time and money for us. You can check in and out on the Gold Floor. They have a great breakfast spread in the morning, Wifi, three computers […] available if you need one, and a concierge right on the floor to help you with anything you might need. They also offer an afternoon tea and some light appetizers early evening. We always purchase a weekly activity pass for each of us at $75 per adult. I think it was a little less for kids. It is inexpensive and well worth the money if your kids like to stay active. This includes unlimited use of paddle boards, snorkeling equipment, surfboards, and kayaks. They have life vests available should you require any of these. Cabanas are available for an additional charge. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Wonderful resort experience. Our room had a partial ocean view overlooking the beautiful golf course and was tranquil and quiet - just what we were looking for. The room was spotless and very recently updated including a fresh coat of paint without a single mar or scratch on the walls. The rooms have refrigerators which was convenient. Self park costs […] nearly as much as valet so we used the valet. Good exercise facility and yoga classes including "FloYo" which takes place in their beach lagoon on paddleboards for those who might enjoy this (my wife enjoyed it immensely).
