For a short stay this hotel is perfectly adaquate. No frills but very clean both in room and shared bathroom. The hotel also felt very secure with with twentyfour hour front desk managment and double locking entrance doors. There were also shared kitchens on all floors if needed, although there were very good resturants and cafe's all within a block of the hotel. Macy's is just down the road and the Empire State Building is about a five minute walk away. The hotel is very convienient to all the attractions in Manhattan This was my second trip to New York this year and I would certainly stay at this hotel for short trips in the future, but for stopping more than three nights I think I would be looking for a hotel with on-suite room with coffee and tea making facilities which are not available at the Americana. If you are a light sleeper I would recommend that you take some ear plugs or cotton wool as the hotel is on a busy junction and can be a bit noisy .

New York budget hotels are famously mixed in quality, and this is one of the more 'mixed' ones. The location, between Penn Station and Grand Central is pretty convenient, though it's a dull area. However, on entering the hotel lobby (via a lift advertised as 'for goods only'), one's heart sinks; it is very drab and suggests a total lack of interest in attracting guests. My room was small but adequate, with a basin and fairly comfortable single bed. However, it was very, very overheated (I think because the hot pipes ran through it), and there didn't seem to be any way of sorting this out, so it was pretty uncomfortable. Most irritatingly, guests are not allowed to use hotel phones (even for local calls) without leaving a $50 deposit. Since the hotel already had my credit card details, I felt this was inexcusable.

Location goes with price. But this place, so close to Times Square was great! The rooms were very clean, and the many bathrooms(shared), were very clean, all the time. We were very impressed, and will definitely stay there again. One good surprize, we had a sink in our room. My only concern was the front door, while locked for security reasons, when we buzzed, always opened, but they never asked who we were. But at the same time there is no way you can sneak by the front desk anyway.

Great hotel for spending a night right in the center of Manhattan. No bathroom/shower in the room, but that didn't matter to me since the prices are very reasonable considering the location. Go there if you want to save money and if you're not too picky about luxury, I definitely will next time I spend a night in Manhattan.

On a recent trip to NY I stayed at 4 hotels. Three of them were lower rate hotels with the bath separate from the room . All were fine including the Americana but I have to say whatever cleaner they are using has an incredibly strong odor. (On the other hand it left no doubt the room had been cleaned!) I'm sorry but the cleaner odor was absolutely overpowering. The bathroom was very clean though (again with the odor). On the whole the hotel had a rather stark, antiseptic feel (tile floors etc.). The rooms were very small but that's to be expected. I felt the other hotels had a much more welcoming atmosphere for the same price. Also the location is on a rather seedy corner (not dangerous though). Not all of the 3 cheaper hotels had elevators but the Americana did which was nice.

The rooms are small but nice, the only downside I could think of is that there is no shower or toilet in the room, but this didn't bother me very much. It's hard to say anything bad about this hotel, and if anyone does, I would imagine it's because they didn't know what they were getting into. I just needed a locked room to store my stuff and sleep in at an affordable price in the Times Square/Broadway area, and that's exactly what I got. The shared bathrooms aren't dorm-style, they're like the bathroom at your house so they're totally private, and I never had to wait. They were clean, too, as was the room. The room was simple and small, but had everything I needed (sink/mirror, TV, closet with hangers, luggage stand, towels, soap, etc.) There are also mini-kitchens on every floor. The place was easy to get in and out of, and I was able to take a safe two-block walk to Times Square at 2am. Didn't notice any noise (above normal city levels) and slept soundly on a Friday night. This isn't the place to go for a romantic weekend getaway, but if you're roaming around the city (which you should be), this is a great cheap place to base out of.

It's in a good location in the heart of Manhattan, with various attractions close by including the Empire State Building, Macy's and Madison Square Garden. The hotel hade more of a communal focus with shared bathrooms and shared kitchen areas on each floor which is useful if you're wanting to save on food and cook yourself. There's a few restrooms with shower, bath and toilet on each floor which were all very clean. The rooms are cleaned daily like any other hotel and towels are provided. There's a wash basin in every room and a small wall-mounted plasma TV, which was an added bonus. There's a few pizza shops and takeaways just round the corner from the hotels also for those wanting to save a few dollars. You won't struggle to find restaurants and bars serving food near to the hotel with a few just up the road. Internet access is available in the reception area at a cost of $1 for 10 mins, with printing available for free within reason (i.e. boarding cards, maps, etc). The main entrance to the hotel is fairly concealed so be careful not to miss it! The place is secure, you need to be buzzed in at the front door and you have individual keycards for the rooms . The only bad thing I can think of is the lift made quite a weird noise and was really slow. Overall a clean, affordable place in a great location.

This was ideal, so we got rest the first night and were able to share a double bed for the rest of the stay. Sharing a washroom with other guests was not a problem, in fact there are three between about fifteen rooms. We never had to wait for a free washroom and they were all clean and tidy. Its a secure hotel and has the added feature of the elevator always stopping at the second floor, so anyone passing in or out of the hotel is always seen by the reception desk. We were very impressed. Hotel is very central to all the landmarks, shopping district (fifth ave just two hundred metres away) and tourist haunts. Excellent hotel.
