Flagship stores ring Union Square, among the vanguard of West Coast retail. Chinatown begins at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, while Gold Rush-era mansions crown Nob Hill. South of Union Square, the convention center area includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Cable cars turn around at Powell and Market streets to head back to Fisherman’s Wharf.
see all hotels in San Francisco"Old hotel, don't get a room near elevator"
Beware, if the front desk puts you in a room anywhere near the elevator you will be up all night listening to it groan and hum up and down right in your ear. We were right next to it and my daughter and I were up at 3:00 am listening to the ancient elevator. I will not be staying here again. The only benefit is the proximity to Union Square, although […] around the corner is the drug addicted population of San Fran, so you should be street wise if you stay at the Bijou or even the Hilton downtown. "Excellent for the price"
The hotel staff was friendly and helpful, the room was absolutely fine and the location is ideal for venturing all over the city by foot, MUNI, and BART. Great, great hotel for the price point and location. Thank you, Hotel Bijou!
"you get what you pay for"
The stay wasn't the worse but it wasn't the best. The location of this hotel is on the border of the Tenderloin -- which means a lot of homeless people asking you for money or harassing you every half a block. And right next door is a low-income housing apartment building. The room itself was ok, but there was a constant odor throughout the room that […] smelled like moth balls. We had them spray Lysol and it worked for the night, but the smell was back the next day. Even with the window open it was always there. But the price was great for a downtown hotel. Read more
"good inexpensive place downtown"
We enjoyed our stay. Hotel was right downtown in the midst of Union Square and shooping and restaurants.
"Clean room - disappointment on the rest"
Wifi was slow or up and down. Hot water didn't work. After calling maintenance they fixed it, but admitted the WiFi was a challenge. On the fringe of a rough neighborhood. Overall, I wouldn't go back.
"Pleasant Stay"
I enjoyed the free movies (San Francisco classic films) and popcorn. There was also free hot chocalate, coffe and tea offered 24 hrs. Hotel staff was very helpfull answering tourist questions. Pleasant stay.
"Not great but a good value"
Location is very central, the hotel staff is friendly, and the price is right. But the quality of the rooms are just average: old TV (no cable, premium channels), small space, poor furnishing, no A/C. It's fine for the price, but it's not memorable in any other sense.
"Bed Bugs!"
Finding bed bugs in our room was a little bit of a downer!...the worst part is the hotel was aware of their problem and actually thought we would stay in another room! DO NOT STAY HERE!!
"Never again haha"
When gabe taxi driver offers to wait until your inside your hotel you know your in the ghetto. It's in the heart of the tenderloin. They don't have A/C, the hot water in the shower didn't work and the tv was from 1970 I think. We made the best of it, but you couldnt pay me to stay here again.
I found the hotel to be clean, hotel staff courteous and friendly. Hotel lacks amenities. Tremendous noise level outside building resulting in loss of sleep.
"You're paying for location, not perks!"
This is a basic little hotel, no-frills. The desk help was nice enough. The surrounding neighborhood is a little sketchy but close to Union Square and Market St.
"Hotel Bijou SF -- Good Enough for the Price"
Look, this hotel firmly straddles the Union Square area and the Tenderloin. As such, the neighborhood leaves much to be desired. And yes, the street noise is significant and the bed was a little tired and thin. But, the room was clean, the staff friendly, the location great for a night of drinking at Pandora Karaoke, and the price was right. If better […] rooms can be had in this area for the same price, I haven't found them, not in the past 4 years anyway. Read more

"Onthe edge"
the edge the location was right on the edge of the part of town that locals advise you stay out of so walking back to our room at night was dicey...one block too far could be bad. We drove through that area during the day and it was pretty scary looking. The "themed" rooms were disappointing... It amounted to a plaque on the door and a photo frame containing […] two photos from the movie. The bathroom offered no counter for toiletiries except behind the toilet. There was a weird vanity style window behind the toilet which appeared to be for access to pipes but it allowed sound to travel from rooms above and below...no privacy. Staff was friendly and helpful, the building was very old but taken care of. Read more
"Friendly staff"
The front desk was very friendly, gave us a good deal due to not having a room we booked. Small room but clean bathroom.
"Overall a Good Value in SF"
The hotel is very conveniently located near the Powell BART Station, Market Street and shopping. The hotel staff was wonderful and made us feel welcome. The rooms were quite adequate, clean and had comfortable beds. I've certainly paid more for less in the past. The major downside is the hotel is located at the edge of the Tenderloin area. If you're […] traveling by yourself I wouldn't choose this location. There are drug users, mentally ill people and vagrants walking the streets. We were in a group and never felt threatened. For sure, if you're from out-of-town, take a few minutes to orient yourself -- maybe ask hotel staff for advice, and make sure you walk toward the BART Station and Market Street, and not in the other directions which would take you further into the Tenderloin. The only other downside is that San Francisco is very noisy. The street noise and undesirables yelling may make it difficult to sleep if you're a light sleeper. Overall, I'd say Hotel Bijou is a good value in an expensive hotel marketplace, as long as you aren't expecting luxury and perfection. Read more
"Hotel Bijou"
Hotel was nice,, but area is shadey.
"Tiny treasure"
Sweet room with charm. Staff is very nice! Movie & popcorn theatre!!! Location is very close to everything you need in SF!! Loud in morning, but it IS the middle of the city, so what do you expect?

"Loud smoky sleepless in the slum!"
Miserable corner full of drug addicts. Loud all night. Tired interiors, soft matresses. Look elsewhere.
"Nice hotel close to union square!"
For the price this was a great little hotel!
"Close to Union Square and Bart"
Great location if you are going out with a few friend! Close to nice bars and clubs. Clean and friendly staff!

"Hotel Bijou"
Cute hotel the staff very very accomodating!!! Location rocked as it is in the heart of the city. The only negative I have? Either change the cleaning solutions or detergent... Not good for people that have sensitive allergies. Very over powering.
"Interesting Hotel"
Staff was helpful for the most part. The noise from the street was awful even on the 6th floor. Trash pickup everyday at 5am, people yelling until all hours of the night. Not very restful. Valet parking was extremely slow, suggest self-park if you can manage the walk. Hard to find the hotel as the sign is a bit small. Elevator is old and very noisy. […] My room was right next to the elevator so all I heard all day and night was the sound of it going up and down. Bathroom amenities were nice and the bathroom was clean. Room was a good size and easy to get around in. I was lucky to find a room at such a late booking time so I didn't complain to management. All in all, it was an ok stay and I would recommend the place to others looking for last minute reservations. However, if you can plan ahead, you might want to try someplace a bit more quiet. "Good Value"
The hotel is good value for money. The hotel has an older traction elevator that can be noisy, so ask for a room not next to elevator if groaning sounds bother you. It is on the edge of the Tenderloin district, so there is some riffraff around, but that's the case with SF in general.
"Hotel Bijou in SF"
First time ever to have to use a plunger on a toilet in a hotel. The room was run down. They did wash our truck before they brought it to us when we checked out. All in all it felt dirty and in a bad neighborhood!
"Not a Themed Hotel"
This hotel was advertising itself as a "Themed" Hotel. The theme was that each of the rooms was themed after a movie filmed in San Francisco. The theme in the room consisted of one picture. That was it. Rooms were very small and very outdated.
The rooms were small but clean and neat. The hotel is very well situated but right on the edge of some pretty bad neighborhood. The staff was friendly and helpful.

"Hotel Bijou in San Francisco - Location and noise"
Clean rooms, good price, free internet, friendly service, proximity to Union Square and BART stations are a plus. However, the hotel lies at the intersection of the bustling Union Square (north of Eddy) and the seedy Tenderloin districts (south of Eddy). The streets adjacent to the hotel (Eddy, Taylor & Turk) are dotted with drug addicts and homeless […] folks and you'll hear plenty of police car sirens. The hotel staff helpfully provided ear plugs, but the street noises are overwhelming during the night. Read more
"Is "Bijou" French for "Motel 6"?"
Friendly staff and good location... But the hotel is old and had a lot of street noise, there were cakes of dust in the room, bed was old and lumpy, and the shampoo was a manufacturers free sample (a leftover from someone's magazine?). If it were a youth hostel, and priced and marketed as a youth hostel, I'd give it a good score. But given the price […] and ratings this was a pure disappointment. Would NOT recommend. Read more
"close to union sq but not worth it!"
the hotel was in a great place location wise, but the surrounding area was terrible. there were bums and crazy drug addicts that scream and fight outside the window , the room was tiny and the tv didnt work and there were dirty handprints on the walls. we were supposed to have continental breakfast but when we checked out they charged us 14$, and we […] were supposed to have gotten it on a discounted rate but we paid a lot for the room and it was terrible. just spend a little more and go somewhere safe Read more

"Bed Bugs"
We found a dead bed bug in our room. None of us had any bites but it was terrifying that we may be bringing them with us on the next leg of our journey to LA. Our friend who we were stayed with would not have been very happy, and neither would I. You get what you pay for I guess.
"Cool hotel were it not in the tenderloin."
Very interesting hotel. Each room is themed for a classic movie. Two theaters showing classic films free for guests. The down side is that it is on the edge of a terrible neighborhood with prostitutes and drug dealers pitching their services loudly all night long.
"Cold Shower, Loud traffic, & crappy/costly bkfst"
title says it all. I should note that I travel to this area of San Francisco at least 1/year for the last 16 years. This was the worst experience, by far!

"in the heart of union station"
this hotel was very clean and located very close to pubic transit system, shopping, and restaurants. the price is right and location is perfect. would stay here again
"Hotel Bijou - Very Accomodating"
I stayed at Hotel Bijou for 3 nights with my dog. They were very friendly and accomodating. Room was very nice and smelled fresh, no animal smells or ugly carpets like some "pet rooms". Clean updated bathroom. Had nice elevator which made it convenient for dog and luggage. They had a little theatre in lobby which had coffee, tea, hot cocoa and microwave. […] Close to Union Square and transit. Good restaurants nearby. Would stay again! Read more
Conveniently located near BART station. Not the best of the neighborhoods, especially later in evening. Be aware that they charge a high parking fees. Fortunately we did not have a car. Rooms were clean enough (for the price point). The area is quite noisy but that might be the case with most downtown places. All in all, the pros: near a lot of attractions, […] restaurants, and public transport. Cons: Shady neighborhood. I would recommend it for price conscious travelers (which you are if you are looking at this hotel) as long as you take proper precautions (not walk alone late at night etc...) your should be fine. Not the best place for a family getaway or a romantic break. Read more
"Hotel Bijou--Close enough to Union Square"
The hotel is right on the edge of a rougher section of town which is kind of the way San Francisco can be, as you're SO close to some major sites including Union Square. I had a ritual--walk out of the hotel to the right, and go left to the Powell Station, which is like a block, and you're fine. But don't go in any other direction. Nice bargain if you […] can handle a little roughness in the location. Read more
Very comfortable and convenient place to stay.
"Hotel Bijou is convenient"
Hotel Bijou is convenient to Union Square. If you don't want passing market st riff raff then choose another hotel. If you are the get in get out who cares traveller, then this is your place. Staff is friendly. Don't like the low pressure showers so this brings the rating down mostly.
"Hotel Bijou- Central, Comfortable, & Affordable"
Staff was all very nice and helpful, the room was clean and had just about everything we needed. Central location in San Francisco, we made our way around the Union Square area so this was very convenient. Lots of bars, restaurants, shopping, really everything you could ask for. Will definitely stay again when I'm in San Francisco
"Good for the Price"
Hotel Bijou is a little warn gem of a Hotel located at the edge of the Tenderloin district. I've stayed at this hotel 4 times when I needed to be on a budget but have a great location. The staff is always helpful and the room is clean and spacious for 1 person. I think most people are concerned with the noise from outside. It can be interrupting however […] requesting a room up high away from elevator helps a little. If you're staying in S.F. 3 or more nights, this place is affordable so you can spend your money on the town. Read more
"Hotel Bijou, San Francisco, CA"
The upside - close to Union Square (about 3 blocks) and BART Powell St. station (about 1 block), cheap and clean with friendly service. The downside - the neighborhood is a bit sketchy and there is some street noise in the evening. I would return if travelling alone. If I were travelling with a spouse or SO, I'd want something tonier.
"Not a bad place."
Exceptionally friendly staff. They deserve top marks. Location is fine. The TL is down the block, but the hotel itself is squarely downtown. The hotel itself is a bit old and could use a spruce-up. The room names was cute, but I wish they took it just a wee bit further in the decor.
