The Rex combines unique and creative with friendly and amazing service. Everyone at the Rex was helpful, friendly, courteous, and willing to go above and beyond for my comfort. I arrived at the Rex at 10:00 a.m. from an early and exhausting trip from the East Coast. I had no expectation that the hotel would allow me to check in at such an early hour […] but arrived and the Rex and asked if it was even remotely possible for a room at such an early hour. The Rex employee smiled, located me a room and checked me in without raising an eyebrow. The interior of the hotel is so creative with quotes from the famous writers of the 1990's written in beautiful cursive on the walls, pictures of the time period of the great authors, the lounge resembling a beautiful, comfortable library that I would imagine one would find in an estate house in the country. The bar tender was wonderful and the food impressive. This is not a hotel for those that want the standard 5 star luxary of the chain hotels. This is a hotel for those that want an experience. A little musty but clean. One tiny but quick elevator with a crunchy wooden floor, glad our room wasn't next to it. Rooms was pretty good sized with a queen sized bed. I am used to a king sized bed but we made due. It isn't the most comfortable bed and the pillows are totally squashed, but there were 4. Apparently new to the hotel is the Dish satellite […] cable TV. They couldn't get 2 of the channels to our room until the last couple of days, and we never did get the channel guide. It was a little run down, but overall a good experience. The Library, the bar downstairs is nice and the room service food is decent. They will let you borrow a bike if you want to. Lots of good restaurants and bars in walking distance. At half the price for the neighborhood, this one's a winner.

nicely situated about few blocks from entrance to Chinatown and a few blocks to Union Square - room was spacious with 18(?) ft ceilings that made it feel even more spacious. Carpet and details were a bit older but still feel clean and nice. Staff was very helpful and pleasant. Would certainly consider it next time in SF

We stayed four (4) nights at Hotel Rex and were very pleased with the location, front desk interactions, facilities in the room (TV, WiFi, Bath, Linens), facilities for arranging tours and transportation, breakfast.

If you like interesting "boutique" hotels, this is for you. A library theme made it very charming. There was a good buffet breakfast and a complimentary wine happy hour. Be aware the elevator is a little cramped though.

Room was nice, good beds and pillows, but hallways smelled of cigarette smoke. Free wifi was a nice touch, but the free version was too slow for video, so you will need to pay for faster wifi.

We had a great stay at Hotel Rex and would probably stay again. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the staff friendly, efficient, and helpful. We were checked in quickly and given early access to our room. (Our first morning I realized I'd forgotten shaving cream, and a nearby maid was happy to supply a can.) Our room was on the quiet side of the […] hotel, which was nice, so ask specifically for it. (Not sure if the other rooms are dramatically noisier.) Comfy bed. Good water pressure in the bathroom. Neat program: If you choose to forgo a room cleaning on any day, you get a voucher for a drink at the hotel bar. The location is OK: It's a hike from the BART station but right next to the cable car line and many rental car companies. There's a fair bit of shopping nearby - mostly chains, not many stylish boutiques. Eating options nearby are plentiful for day and night, though most are only so-so. (Scala's is great, however.) Quaint, immaculate, comfortable and loaded with personality. Very European in feel, small elevator & room but that only adds to the charm. Staff friendly and oh, so accommodating. If you are thinking of renting a car and heading to Muir Woods, Napa or other destination, they are a short walk to various rental car locations where you can pick up a car and avoid the high taxes of renting at an airport location PLUS EZ access to exit SanFran. Location was fine. Happy hour in bar area was excellent. Room was clean and amenities were good. Lighting wasn't bright enough for our taste. Room air conditioner was terribly noisy -- needed ear plugs to sleep. Bed comfort was okay.
