We were given a room that was scheduled to be renovated. We stayed they in Nov 2013 and had a worse room. Expedia did not indicate that the room and hotel was under a major renovation and a change of hotel name/ownership. In the past this hotel is very close to where we like to stay. This was the perfect hotel for a quick weekend getaway. Our room was clean and comfortable. The staff were very friendly. The front desk clerk was chatty and nice and the maids said "hello" to us as we passed them in the morning. I really enjoyed my stay at the Phoenix Inn. We had to stay somewhere before an early morning event in Vancouver and this hotel was close enough to it but for a great price. We are a non-smoking hotel but unfortunately some people don't care and smoke in the room anyway. We do our very best to get rid of the smell. (Did you know coffee grounds on the carpet can help soak up smell?) Sadly sometimes the smoke can get in the wall vinyl. With the renovation that we've just started we're getting new wall vinyl and carpet in all our guest rooms so I hope you'll have a chance to come back and "smell" a brand new product! I was really happy with the hotel staff and the room size and lay out. However, the carpet was quite stained and there was mold on the ceiling above the showerhead. The bed was as hard as sleeping on concrete! In fact, I was SO uncomfortable, I woke up every 2 hours, finally giving up and getting up an hour and a half earlier than I had planned. Have stayed here many times in the past visiting relatives. Cannot beat the price for the service here, and close proximity to restaurants. It is back off of the highway so it is not noisy. We just had our pool deck resurfaced and had to drain the pool and hot tub in order to do that. I'm happy to report the hot tub is up and running and we have a new deck as well! As far as the room, I'm very sorry it smelled like smoke. Unfortunately even though we are a non-smoking hotel some people just don't care. We do our best to remove the smell (deep clean, steam the carpets) but a lot of times the smoke gets into the walls. I'm happy to report when we start renovations on Monday one of the things they'll be doing in addition to the carpet is changing out the wallpaper. The reviews on the site were all fairly accurate. In general, the hotel was clean and quiet, staff friendly, breakfast good, etc. However, the carpets are definitely very stained and in need of replacement. This was the only issue.
