"staff makes you feel like a criminal"
They have zero flexibility in their policies, because they assume that people will want to take advantage or to abuse the hotel's all inclusive feature. The first night one extra guest in the room arrived at 6am and the manager wouldn't let him in unless he would pay for the night. Afterwards, they even REFUSED ACCESS to the lobby's restroom to a friend […] of mine because she wasn't staying at the property. Staff needs to remember they operate in a highly competitive service industry. You can't treat your customers as criminals. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Right place to be if you like to see the ocean"
We felt welcome from the start! Easy checking in. Our first room was on first floor and we asked to be moved away from pool and noise, they accommodated us and we moved to second floor, ocean front, spectacular views. Access to everything!Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel on the beach centrally located."
All inclusive hotel right on the beach and centrally located. They offer a variety of casual dinning choices with good food, something for everyone. The Pescatore requires reservations and for me was the best meal we had. All staff we encountered were friendly and very responsive. My girlfriend and I have never been to Mexico and we were pretty picky on where we wanted to stay. Let me say that Gran Porto Real did not disappoint. "Gran Porto Real is a deal for the money!"
This was my first time staying at an all-inclusive resort, but it won't be my last. The food and drink were all good, and the 24 hour help-yourself bar/snack area is a bonus. No, it's not all top shelf liquors, but everything from the Dos Equis self-pour to the hot dog snacks were enjoyable. We stayed in the least expensive room with two double beds […] and were quite comfortable. The air conditioning in the room was excellent, and easy to control and manage. They tried to up-sell us a larger room or a room with a pool or Gulf of Mexico view, but we resisted and were more than comfortable in the inexpensive location with a view of the hotel across the street. The beach was less than a block from our room, and one of the smaller pools was practically right outside our room with a swim-up bar and sushi chef. You really can't beat that for convenience. The sauna was also just a short walk out and up a few flights, on top of the building. Very nice and very comfortable. Take some time to relax and swing in the hammocks up there as well. "I recommend this all inclusive property"
Everyone is super friendly. But almost eerily friendly. You are greeted with pleasantries to almost suspect level. But they have their systems down. From the entrance greeting, to check in, to the extras they promote on site for excursions offsite. The facilities were kept clean at all hours and food was tasty. Actually missing it a bit. I would stay […] here again. I recommend however booking room at the far east end of the hotel or in one of the direct ocean facing rooms and definitely on floor 2 or higher. If you are too close the lobby area, you will be disturbed by music and noise (unless you are the ones creating it). Take advantage of the onsite free activities, I did a "stretching" session which actually turned into a one-on-one yoga session (beach facing). Bring your own yoga matt though. The location is perfect, walking distance to the bustling shops, restaurants, and bars. It is also safe, which is important, right. But just like any tourist destination, learn to say "no" to any aggressive peddlers. They mean no harm, just trying to make a living. Overall I enjoy the property, the location, the activities, and food. Only issue was being too close to the lobby and on the ground floor the 1st night. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Nice hotel that is very well maintained."
We had a great time at Gran Porto Real, The waiters and entertainment staff are very accommodating and friendly. Property is well kept. Do not let them put you in room 114 if you don't have kids. It is a junior suite, but right in the highest traffic area. Mexican restaurant is very good. Italian is okay, but I was hoping for more seafood selections. […] The buffet has a nice selection but becomes very ordinary as the week goes on. There is also a beach grill and a sushi bar at the roof top tranquil pool. Overall, it was a good experience. The resort is not that big so, it not seem overly crowded, and the location is excellent with only a short walk to 5th avenue where you will find a multitude of shops and restaurants. "Close to downtown!"
Staff very friendly and helpful once you figured out who actually worked for the hotel. Best Day travel helped us with booking outside excursions. The beach was clean, but sandbagged due to erosion. My complaint on the beach was the people selling massages, fishing boats, etc. You couldn't take a quiet walk without getting bombarded. Don't go to this […] hotel for the food either. All inclusive doesn't mean much here. The one restaurant that took reservations was full every night...The buffet had some real funky food on it too. Drinks were good though!!! Stayed at Gran Porto Real. Very nice hotel right on the beach and in the town of Playa del Carmen. Great food and close access to shopping on the trendy 5th avenue. This hotel has no beach to speak of. Sandbags and cloudy water. Really gross algae that stinks. Tons of boat traffic. If you just want to enjoy the hotel and the pool, then it is a very nice place. "Everything you want all in walking distance"
Everything was wonderful - staff could not have been more pleasant or helpful. Upgraded our room - didn't care for standard we were assigned to. Upgrade was really nice. We did have to stay in a standard our last night, however, that one was fine - it was located on the third floor and the swim up bar/sushi bar was right outside of our room. Would have […] kept that room had it been initially assigned to us. My only real complaint was the beach - there really isn't a beach for swimming and my son had his heart set on that. "Old Charming Hotel"
I recently stayed at this hotel from 4/9 - 4/15. This is a charming little hotel is in a great location within walking distance to 5th Avenue. We were in a small standard room with no view, it was okay, but would not stay there again. They claim to have 6 restaurants but it is really 1 buffet and 2 restaurants - Il Pescatore, Marias and the beach bar. […] I'm from Chicago, so I'm used to great food. The food here was average at best. For some reason, you always had to ask for guacamole and salsa. It was always hidden in the kitchen. Don't understand why? They have lots of activities day/night to keep you busy if you want to. We just wanted to relax. It seems more of a family place and not for couples. I disliked the timeshare sales. Wonderful all-inclusive practically on 5th avenue. Only downside is the beach with lots of sandbags to prevent erosion as well as rocks. If swimming in the ocean is not important to you the rest won't disappoint.Genuine Expedia guest review

First time traveller to Mexico for a vacation, glad we went with this resort. When they say all inclusive they mean it, very few things are an additional charge. When you tip or buy anything they happily except US dollars which was great.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Why is this hotel a 3.5?"
My overall experience was great, super friendly staff but i must condense at some point it gets kinda annoying that everybody either says hi at you or wave at you. But it sure is nice to get that kind of attention the first 3 days.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great Service, Nice Place, Too many smokers"
The employees at The Gran Porto real are absolutely wonderful. Everyone we met was friendly and went out of their way to make our stay better. The Ocean front room with balcony was very nice. The whole property was kept VERY clean. HOWEVER, There are so many smokers at this resort that I did not enjoy my vacation at all. While the inside is designated […] non smoking by law, ALL outside areas including the wide open covered entrance is considered smoking. They could easily make the south end of the pool non smoking. All the kids activities are at this end as well as the kiddie pool. Laying by the pool with smokers on either side smoking everything from cigars to unfiltered cigarettes was terrible. When you go inside, it is no better. The wind blows all the smoke from those smoking in all the covered areas and by the ash trays next to the entrances. You can smell smoke EVERYWHERE in the resort. The management could do more to accommodate the non smokers AND protect the health of kids. When I spoke to several managers, all said there was nothing they could do. They enforce a no eating policy at the pool, it would be VERY easy to do the same with a non smoking section. Smokers are more than welcome to sit there, just not smoke there. I cannot recommend this resort due to the smoking issues and I will not be back Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great location, Great staff, rooms need improvment"
Overall excellent experience. I would have to say we underrated the hotel because it is right next to the Royal which from pictures looks much nicer. We were a young couple and were nervous about kids, but did not have any issues and they were all fairly quiet and well behaved. Staff was great and friendly at all the bars. There are two nicer sit down […] restaurants with menus, the first waiter comes out and hands you a wine list with the cheapest bottle being around $40. They lead us to believe this was the only option so we paid for wine. We found out the next night at the other restaurant, all inclusive drinks are still included, they just try to get you on the wine first, so don't fall for it :) Rooms are definitely worth paying for an upgrade, we choose not too and were happy, but two full beds for a couple was not the best choice. Sushi bar was fantastic, people were great, vendors at the hotel were excellent. Overall much happier than we expected for a young couple at a kid friendly resort. This is not a bad hotel, but don't expect a 5 star experience. We felt this hotel has seen it's better days. After our 2nd night, we upgraded to their sister hotel next door called the Royal for only a few additional dollars per night. It's adult only, which didn't matter to us. However, the difference in all around quality went through the roof. The […] all inclusive food was unbelievably better with twice as many restaurant choices. We didn't really care for the food at the Porto Real, but we just thought food must not be that good in the Yucatan, until we changed hotels and started having fantastic gourmet meals. - The rooms were also much more luxurious at the Royal. The beach wasn't full of rocks like the Porto Real and swimming in the ocean became fun again. The hotel staff at the Royal are even more inviting taking better care of us. - Plus, there's not sales people in the lobby harassing you on a daily basis like the Porto Real. They were so aggressive they even called our room at 8:30 am. which we found to be somewhat rude. - I suggest that you stay in each hotel and see for yourself what we're saying. I think you'll agree, lol. - Otherwise, the location is excellent. The beach is beautiful. We look forward to going to Playa Del Carmen again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Very noisy hotel"
For an all inclusive the food was terrible. Three out of four mornings I was awakened by a loud noise outside my room at 6:15am. Our room overlooked the pool where loud music played every night till 10:30. We attended a wedding at the hotel next door which was much nicer.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location for hopping and the beach"
If you are looking for a hotel that has charm and ambience, then this hotel may be for you. We enjoyed our five night all inclusive stay. The hotel is fifty steps from 5th Ave which has live music, shopping, bars and many nice restaurants. It reminded my wife and I of Bourbon St. except not as smelly and more laid back. The hotel staff is exceptional. […] They go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfy. The only negs. are that the beach is not user friendly and the food could use some improvement. The hotel sits right on the beach, but there are sandbags stacked up to keep the sand on the beach. If u don't like to swim and walk in the water then this hotel is perfect for you(my wife). I however, was determined to get my feet wet and flounder about on my back and gaze up at blue skies. Didn't happen like I imagined. Once over the sandbags, I found myself fighting to stay upright as I walked on rocks, bits of coral, and slimy sand. Needless to say, I cut my foot, which bled, on my very first day of vacation!!! I then had to hobble about for the remainder of my stay. It's not the hotels fault, but just beware! It is not a fun relaxing beach if you like to get in the water! Also, if you don't get down and claim a chair either poolside or beachside by about 8:30am, all of the chaise lounges will be taken! Get there early-ask for extra towels a the booth and claim your chairs! The food was ok. It's Mexico! They seemed to undercook the meats and eggs. Ask and they will cook Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The reservation i had was for a standard room, which was below expectations in all regards. The biggest disappointment was that there was no window on this room. All resorts i have visited before and stayed at in the past had rooms with windows that open. This had a built in glass tinny window which i found unacceptable. After complaining to the stuff, […] i got a room which at least had small windows that opened such i could get fresh air (i have not used a/c at all during the stay as i am allergic to it). This room had another issue: the door lock would never work. The stuff made attempts to fix it, but every time we got a new set of keys, the keys would not work and we had to spend 20 min or so until someone can come and open the door for us. One evening my kid had to sleep in my arms for about 1/2 hour before we could get in the room. After this incident, we got moved into a suit which was indeed very nice: big, balcony. So my advice to whomever books this hotel is to book a suit (if they can afford it). The hotel was very clean and the facilities were in great conditions. The beach was clean but eroded, so there were sand bags to help re-built it. Small inconvenience for me who likes the beach more than the pool. Food was great, especially at the restaurants (i.e. not the buffet - i am not a big fan of buffet). The hotel is right on the beach, and it was 2 blocks from 5th which was convenient. "stay away from room 157 if you want to sleep"
the outside of the hotel looks very clean but once you get into the hotel and walk to your room is not the same, we stayed at room 157 which was the end of the hall, because of the structure of the building, it echo every sounds into our room, it was very loud so we didn't get that much sleep, also the cleaning supplies closet it was also near by so […] everytime someone opened the door we can hear it, the bed sheet wasn't clean, I found a stain on it, food was ok, overall we don't think we'll be back Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Inedible food and Useless beach"
The only rationalization for the positive reviews on the food is that they are employees leaving them. The food in every restaurant was worse than any hospital food. It was so bad at points that we just skipped meals. My wife and I had to eat off the resort (When we already paid for an all inclusive) because we were starving. I find it insulting to […] think that they feel this food is worth paying for. The beach is basically useless. There is no swimable area where you can be more then 2 feet submerged. You also can not go out far at all as it is all rock formations. Understand that this place is literally All inclusive by the virtue that its gross food and drink are included and that is it! Everything was an extra fee...every employee is trying to sell you on something. Pool: The pool areas are tiny (there are only 2) and if you love having screaming kids splashing next to you then your in for a treat Overall: If you can get this place cheap and are looking for a bare bones place to stay with no regard for food quality this is the place for you. As far as I am concerned I would rather of stayed home. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Another Amazing Girls' Trip at Gran Porto Real!"
We're a group of friends who met mainly through work. It all started with the plan of celebrating our 50th birthdays in Mexico together. 10 years later we still make this an annual trip - to Playa del Carmen and to Gran Porto Real! From the moment we step into the lobby to check-in to the moment we step back on our grand transport after a week of sun/fun, […] we are treated like "queens" as Ivan in the dining room would say. This year was no different. Any issues with things in the rooms were handled quickly, leaving us plenty of time to sit poolside or oceanside, take long walks on the beach, participate in the water aerobics, spanish & salsa lessons and volleyball. Shopping on 5th is a must as well as taking in the lights in the evening and visiting the various cantinas. The food at Maria's, Il Pescatore and the Albatross is equally elegant and good at any of these restaurants. This trip is one that we look forward to all year long and it goes by much too quickly! Let's see...we're only 348 days away from leaving on next years' trip! Our favorite staff this year was: David & Miguel from the Tiki bar, Verlaine, Arturo, Michelle, Angie, Oswaldo, Deborah & Omar from the activities staff, Theresa, Jose, Pablo, Jesus, & Calis from the pool/ocean wait staff and Ivan & Mateo from the dining room. We are always well-taken care of by these friendly hardworking staff. We so appreciate it and we can't wait to see you all next year! Feliz Navidad! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
When we got to the resort they did not have our reservation. We got an excellent room the first night then had to move to "what I define" as a substandard room for the rest of the vacation. "Love this place"
I have stayed at the grand Porto Real many times and it never disappoints. The over all experience was wonderful. If you are expecting a United States hotel however you will likely be disappointed. The flavor and hospitality in Mexico are unique but folks at the Grand Porto Real have it down to an art. This resort offers a big surprise from a culinary […] point of view. I was not expecting to eat great sushi in Mexico but the swim up bar at the pool on the fourth floor offers incredible sushi and it's all-you-can-eat. I think I must have eaten 2 pounds of smoked salmon in the three days I was there. The sushi chef is amazing and willing to get creative we had a blast hanging out at that pool bar stuffing our faces with sushi and drinking great tequila. The grounds and setting around the resort are amazing offering a diverse array of fabulous views and delicious eye candy. We have traveled all inclusive in the past and have always found the food to be good and satisfying; we have also travelled in Mexico and always enjoyed fresh and authentic Mexican fare but this was not the case during this stay. Many of the dishes in the buffet were disappointing, bland and lacked the usual fresh Mexican style and flavor. Many of the […] snack foods involved 'hot dogs' (in tacos, mini buns, tortillas). The fresh fruit was abundant and great. The beach water is beautiful but the many sandbags and often overwhelming odor put a damper on the overall experience. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
