We loved the location (right next to the Winchester Cathedral) and the staff. While the hotel itself is very nice, the room was okay, but not great.

Very convenient location. A short walking distance to nearby shops and restaurants. Good counter service. Room is neat, but not spacious enough. The light of the room is too dim. Bed and pillows are just acceptable. Food at the hotel restaurant is nice. Overall satisfied.

Stayed here for one night prior to an event nearby the next day.. Hotel is in a good location near the cathedral and the high street so easy to pop out for a bite to eat Check in was painless, reception and bar are uninteresting but do the job. The hotel is situated next to the cathedral so we did not use our car for the three days we were there, everything we wanted to see was within walking distance of the hotel. A city well worth visiting.

The hotel was lovely, we knew that the parking at the hotel was first come first served after I rung the hotel. When we arrived at the hotel at first we could not find a space so I asked where we can park. They said over at public car park you had to pay till 6pm then free till 07am the following morning and then you had run down and get a ticket before […] you got a parking ticket, so if you were planning on having a lie in forget it the alarm clock had to go on. I was disappointed that the parking for residents was a substantial charge per night and was not aware until the question was asked that all other parking was free in the area. For an executive room, the bed was made up of two single beds, therefore, it was apparent a twin room had been converted into our executive room. Checking in was smooth, appearance of room was fine but toilet flush was useless would flush after having to wait about 30 minutes and only then after having to fiddle with the flush lever, we reported this to reception and was offered an upgrade at £10 a night, as we were staying for two nights we first thought this was ok but after some consideration […] thought no why should we, after a further discussion with reception we were given an upgrade for free and ended up in the honeymon suite, so it pays to hold your ground. Did not use the bar or hotel resturant as there are ample resturants nearby in the local High Street and adjoining streets. Only other thing that is not mentioned on the hotels web site is that there is a £9 charge per night to use their car park. Other than this we enjoyed our stay at the Mercure hotel as it is a clean and freindly hotel and central to the town. Read more

Functional in outward appearance, yet inside this hotel is smart, warm, and relaxing. Service was excellent, from reception staff to chamber maids, very professional. Our ensuite bedroom was a very good size; large TV, comfortable Kingsize bed (2 singles joined seamlessly), 2 armchairs, fridge, iron, assorted teas and coffee etc., and the bathroom […] was clean, with all the amenities you would expect, including a powerful shower. The decor and some of the furniture was slightly dated, and the armchairs weren't the most comfortable in the world, but any little niggles we had were made up for by the view from the huge bedroom window. We overlooked the Cathedral and grounds, side on, which was absolutely beautiful, and adding to this, as we arrived on a Sunday, were the peeling of the Cathedral bells. (I would say that I am not sure whether all the hotels rooms overlook he Cathedral.# Our 3 night stay was fantastic throughout, but we can't comment on food, as we did not eat in the hotel at all. We had a drink in the bar, which along with the restaurant, also overlooked the Cathedral, but found the drinks prices slightly more expensive than we were used to #I guess you pay a bit of a premium for the view). The hotel is also situated very close to the main shopping and tourist areas. Bearing in mind our stay was at a special rate, we found it to be excellent value, and would definitely stay here again. We stayed here overnight, and it was conveniently located for us. The staff were excellent in their service and the room was clean and tidy. Ask for a room looking away from the church if you enjoy your sleep in's. The bell's go of early. Nevertheless, we would stay here again.

Very high standard of hotel in the best location in Winchester. Very comfortable beds and very quiet rooms. The restaurant has huge windows looking out upon the floodlit cathedral. A pity that breakfast was not included in the room rate and parking was £9 extra.

it took us a long time to find the hotel as the roads were a one way system, on arriving we found no spaces in the car park so paid £4 to park in the car park across the road, looking at the hotel from the outside it looked like a brick building on stilts with a street full of rubbish bins next to it, double yellow lines everywhere so no where else […] to park, we started to regret going there after nearly 2hours of trying to find it, but hey when we entered the hotel, wow ! it was great ! the staff were very friendly, the hotel is much bigger than it looks from the outside, got to our room number 247, it was lovely and comfy, telly, mini fridge so we could go and by our own beer and keep it cool !! the bed was comfy, plenty of room to put our belongings, it was warm, the shower/toilet was clean and spacious and we had a lovely view of winchester cathedral from our window, the breakfast was very nice and a good variety for different appetites,we didnt have an evening meal there so can't comment on the resteraunt, we stayed for 7nights, and would do so again, lovely area, so much history and places to visit. Arrived to a warm welcome, and asked if we would like to upgrade to a catherderal view executive room for £10 per night . This was worth every penny as the view and room were superb. Breakfast was well organised, and plenty of choice hot and cold buffet, with staff to help if needed. Overall a very pleasant stay and would do it again tomorrow.

On our previous visit we booked a standard double room which was extremely disappointing in terms of a small room, very dated and noisy, but this time we upgraded to an executive room which was well worth the extra cost. Our room was clean, modern and comfortable. Although it was still a little small it was quiet as we requested. The bathroom was clean […] and adequate but the shower is over the bath so the shower is not quite as powerful. Furniture for storing your clothes is limited to a wardrobe only - presumably space was an issue to include any chest of drawers which wouldn't be a problem if you were only staying for one night. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful on arrival although when we asked about parking arrangements they didn't mention that to park your car in their car park the fee is £8.00 per night (as we stayed on a Sunday you could park for free in the public car park opposite!) but they did remove this from our bill when we explained we were unaware of any charges. This hotel is in a wonderful location - steps away from the cathedral, river & the many excellant restaurants,coffee shops, shops & other tourist attractions. I would definately stay here again in an executive room as the facilities & room rates were great for a short leisure break. Read more

Great location and smart feel to the place. However, we were roasting at night. No up-to-date air conditioning system in the room led to quite an uncomfortable nights sleep. Add to that the road sweeper, bin men and deliver lorries arriving between 6-8am and hey presto...a couple of grumpy people! The Wessex Mercure is a perfectly good city centre hotel, but parking can be a nightmare. We arrived at 2.30pm on a Saturday to find that the hotel car park was full and the short-term pay and display car park opposite was also full with shoppers cars. Great hotel, very clean and comfortable. Did not use hotel services as we found them expensive.
