"Never judge a book by its cover!"
This hotel may not look much from the outside but inside it has been delightfully updated. It is modern, airy and light whilst maintaining the heritage and beauty of the area. It's in a very convenient location but also a very attractive location. The bedrooms although a little on the small size are well decorated, modern and very clean. I did think it was a little pricey, however I flew in from New York early in the morning and arrived at the hotel at around 10:00am and the staff were very helpful in accommodating my exceptionally early arrival. In comparison to the other hotels in the area this is by far the best. I was very happy with my stay.

"Nice hotel, shame about the tray charge"
The public areas of the hotel are lovely, especially the dining room. My room was disappointing as it was so small. The wardrobe wouldn't open fully because the bedside table obstructed the door and the tea making tray was on the floor of the wardrobe, making an approach on hands and knees the best option! The staff were excellent and the breakfast very good indeed. Hot, fresh and tasty. My big beef is the tray charge of £5 for room service. I wanted a sandwich in my room while I was working but refused to have one as I didn't want a £7 sandwich to turn into a £12 sandwich just for the sake of having it delivered. At a gentle stroll, my room was 30 seconds from the restaurant. Let's be generous and say a minute from the kitchen. So - two minutes for delivery and return to the kitchen, say one minute to exchange pleasantries with the guest on delivery and two more minutes to collect the plate. Say 5 minutes in all , and that's being very generous. So at £5 for 5 minutes, the guests are paying £60 an hour to have someone on probably less than £10 per hour to deliver their food. It's irritataing and made me feel that the hotel was money grabbing at every opportunity. A shame because the staff were lovely.

"Beautiful hotel, only spoilt by the aircon!"
A one night stay in a really lovely looking hotel. The hotel decor is lovely, the rooms are really comfortable and I could have stayed a few nights in this place. Not the cheapest in food and drinks and little limited on veggie food, but quite a few places still are unfortunately. Very quiet in the hotel, even though there was a local prom happening so when we turned up we couldn't even get near the place! Only real downside the air conditioning was useless and we had to sleep with the window open on a very warm night.

"Great weekend."
We had the best time. The area is scenic and spectacular but not to far from train station and airport. The service and food was excellent. My room was clean and comfortable although a bit small. I visited my friends rooms and they had a bigger room, and balcony. I would highly recommend a stay at Burford Bridge Hotel for a family, because of the pool, or couples for a getaway.Fantastic walks and bike trails.

"Great for cycling Box Hill"
Recently renovated so was all very smart. Room had everything you need in it and also a balcony. Breakfast was very good and plenty of choice. A bit noisy on the second night due to a wedding downstairs, there were a number of loud drunk guests at 1.00AM. Location brilliant for walking and cyling in the area. There were also a number of local pubs in walking distance, do not drink in hotel unless you have loads of money to throw away!!

"Almost there!"
Potentially a super hotel in a beautiful location - very well stylishly appointed. Just needs to complete some small finishing touches to get 100% marks - examples such as it was obvious room allocation had been manually changed so not surprised that key card didn't open room door and had to be reset; only 1 English teabag on complimentary tray so another visit to Reception; used breakfast room service order card left in room etc.; no controlled access to Breakfast room so long wait for waitress to work out new arrivals to get tea/coffee ordered etc.. Small things but all easily fixed!

"Great surroundings"
A very comfortable stay in lovely green surroundings. The outdoor pool was a delight after our long walk in the hot weather. Just need a sauna and steam. There's room to put one in... The hotel room double bed was huge and comfortable that looked out on to the pleasant Green Garden, the bathroom immaculate with a deep bath. Breakfast was delicious. Variety and looked good in the lightly aired dining room. Restaurant was closed on the Sunday night when we wanted to eat but it wasn't a problem as the bar food was nice and the bar was a nice place to be in. Tasteful and neutral decor throughout newly refurbished hotel. Liked all the furnishings especially the two seater chair in the foyer. A very modern reception. Just thought it was a big old table at first. Check-in took a long time. No queue but staff seemed to find the laptop keyboard tricky. Liked the quietness of the place. Heard the loud music from the wedding party in the Tithe Barn but don't know when that stopped as I fell asleep. Hotel great for visiting Denbies Vineyard and Dorking ton centre as is within walking distance. We had a very enjoyable stay and would love to return again.

"Perfect location for Box Hill and Denbies vineyard"
This is our second stay here, and we were wondering what to expect after the floods and subsequent revamp the hotel had gone through. It only reopened 2 weeks before our stay, so most things looked pristine. The bedroom was comfortable, and the bathroom was big. Unfortunately the shower wasn't really powerful enough, which was a shame as it had a monsoon shower head! The breakfast was really good. Next time we might book two nights so that we had time to use the very inviting pool....

"Location"
Not a good stay, room was very small, and smelling of paint. Bathroom door still had wet paint, which got on our clothes. Considering we booked 3 month in advance, the room was not really aceptable, and in hind sight should have kicked up a fuss. Bathroom was again small, chipped bath, not enough towells, very little bath gel/ shampoo.Window blinds not private, and open to front veiw by passers by, noise from outside. Double bed but room only fit for one person. Wifi no good, TV stations limited. No lifts. Corridoors very tight when carrying bags. Food trays left in corridoors, not collected. Reception very slow.

"Shabby but not chic"
The public areas were fine and the staff were all very helpful and polite. Breakfast was great with loads of choices. Dinner, however, was a disappointment. Overpriced, over seasoned and overcooked. The room could have been ok, but the carpets were grubby and there were crumbs on the floor. The minibar was nt switched on when we arrived and only contained two bottles of water, one of which was opened and some water was gone, the other had a faulty cap and we weren't able to open it. The pool looked good, but we didn't have time to try it. Great location for Denbies vineyard and perfect for Box Hill

"Good venue for a special occasion"
We use this hotel and Restaurant for an annual Reunion Lunch .. This year we got off to a slow start as the Hotel and the Restaurant were both very busy so it was 20 mins before we could order a drink and another 20 mins before we could order our meal . However all went very well after that with an excellent meal , good wine selection and good service . All finished off with coffee in the lovely gardens with stunning views of Box Hill . The blazing sun helped as well

"Good rural location at the bottom of Box Hill"
We have stayed in this hotel in the past, but felt a little disappointed after this visit. It could be excellent with just a little effort. The service at reception was very slow though staff were very friendly, and prices for extras seem to be rather expensive for the level of staffing. Breakfast was very good. There was a disco at the back of the hotel but this did not disturb us in our room.

"Lovely escape for couples"
We had a lovely weekend away at this hotel. Staff were polite and efficient. The room was small but clean and the bed magnificently comfy. The only criticism I had, was the walls were really thin so you could hear other peoples conversations and movements very easily. And there was no free access to wifi in your room. Would definitely stay at this hotel again.

"A deux pas de la M25"
Nous avions choisi cet hotel pour sa proximité aux grands axes comme la M25 près de Londres tout en bénéficiant d'un cadre bucolique et très calme.Le petit déjeuner est correct et copieux (buffet à l'anglaise). Par contre la ville de Dorking à proximité ne présente aucun charme particulier.

"A drink for the kids"
09/02/15 Marconluca London, United Kingdom
Visited here after doing the Boxhill ring walk. Absolutely disgraceful service, you really think they would have tried after being out of business for some time due to a flood of the river that was BBC news highlighted. We came here for a drink with the kids and my wife, only wanted to stay for a short while, approached the bar to order, bartender said its ok he would take my order outside... 30 mins later his colleague arrived( we should of had our drinks and left by now) they were not busy, no lunches and maybe three tables max, drinks only. We really only wanted a pit stop, so a 30 min break turned into an hour and a half, for 2 cokes, 2 lemonades and a lager. To add insult to injury, there sluggish(underestimate) service was compounded by not pay being able to pay for the drinks via card at the table as the connection of there card machine did not reach, so I had to go and pay in the foyer, I had to be escorted to the payment point making me feel that the staff did not trust me, stunning! Appalling service, slow, with inexperienced staff, if you need a drink go to the bar and force them to take your money !!! -1 stars so that makes it 0

"Perfect for wedding"

I had my wedding here in August, and the amazing staff especially Lorna made the day as stress free and as smooth as possible. All the guests commented on how helpful and friendly the staff were. Most guests stayed 2 nights and were very impressed with the rooms, breakfast and beautiful pool. The location was stunning, the food was phenomenal and venue perfectly suited for a wedding. There is nothing I would change about the day. I would recommend the venue for a wedding and the hotel for a stay. And if you are lucky enough to get Lorna as your wedding co-ordinator, she's is fantastic!!

"Not great..."
08/31/15 McFreddie Northamptonshire, United Kingdom
Booked a room here for a family event nearby. It was a long drive, so called ahead to ask if there was somewhere to change into our formal gear before the event if our room wasn't ready. Told we could use the disabled toilet. Nice, thanks. Arrived and told the room price was higher than agreed when booked (should have been £180 which was already ridiculously expensive for this standard - tried to charge £210). We were in a rush so ordered a quick sandwich and asked the waiter if it could be super-quick. 40 minutes later the sandwiches arrived... Later, after the family event we had a late supper and some drinks. The process of paying was horribly difficult, complicated and time consuming (some of our group could add to their room bill, others not, depended on what card you'd used to check in etc ). Most of the staff, although polite, were rather "jobsworth" throughout our stay - the rules is the rules. And the rules is complicated! Doesn't make for a relaxing experience. There was a big wedding going on when we were there - which meant loud music til 1am then rowdy football in the garden outside our room until after 2. Not ideal when your kids are trying to sleep. Fine if they want to host wedding events, but they should really warn other guests when booking that there's likely to be noise until late. All in all, nicely decorated place, good food (but expensive), staff probably badly trained and/or managed meaning the customer experience, for us at least, was very disappointing. Bearing in mind the very high price for the room, I thought we had very poor value. Good points : Breakfast was good (buffet style), the Dutch guy running the restaurant was great, the hotel setting by Box Hill is lovely and the heated outdoor pool looked appealing if you have the time.

"Beautiful hotel, but disappointing service."
08/30/15 DevonshireMike Devon, UK
The hotel itself - clearly an historic building, has been cleverly and sympathetically modernised throughout to offer all modern conveniencies in a clean and uncluttered style. However, the standard of service was sadly disappointing, and appeared to pervade every level, which spoilt the overall experience. We arrived weary from a long and tedious journey on a hot afternoon, booked into our third floor room, and discovered there is no lift. We're a generally fit couple, and carrying heavy bags up three flights of stairs was within our capability, but in a four star hotel I would expect an offer of help with the task - which would have been very welcome in the circumstances. At breakfast the first morning we were cheerfully greeted by a calm and efficient maître d'. Sadly she appeared to be off duty the second and third mornings - when we had to wait for a table to be laid, and seek out waiting staff so we could order hot food. On our last afternoon we ordered a cream tea in our room, which was duly delivered once the kitchen had finished with lunch. The tea itself was fine, but the resultant tray of dirty plates I placed outside the room door was still cluttering up the corridor looking slovenly and unpleasant when we checked out the next morning - 20 hours later. In summary - a beautiful hotel, but run in a disappointing and slovenly fashion. A shame - with better management it could easily be so much nicer.

"Afternoon tea experience"
08/28/15 dillyeastsx east sussex
Was treated to an afternoon tea. Arrived in heavy rain and the car park was flooded as was the road nearby. On arrival we had to ask if there was somewhere to leave our coats and umbrellas. We went through the first room and I thought we had arrived in a hostel. Jackets and rucksacks strewn across the settees. It looked as though some sort of filming was going on but staff failed to mention this or to apologise. We were taken to our table which was in the bar area - more like a corridor. We had the full tea. Finger sandwiches, cakes, scones etc. This was served on what looked like a drawer with the back taken out! The sandwiches had hardly any filling in them. We assumed one had a scraping of egg in but it was hard to tell. Another had a scraping of what looked like cream cheese with the smallest slither of cucumber I have ever seen. The others were smoked salmon and ham. Cakes and pastries were good. Scones were dry - definitely not fresh. We were asked what tea we wanted but had no description of the choice. We had to go to the bar and ask for more hot water. When we came to leave we had to ask for our coats and these were brought all scrunched up with the still soaking wet umbrellas. It is clear that this hotel is not geared up for afternoon tea and that the staff are not well trained even in the basic customer service.

"Gorgeous Setting for a wedding reception"
08/24/15 NFribbs Walton-On-Thames, United Kingdom
The location was marvelous, the sun shone and the food was delightful. However, this was marred by the surly bar staff, who were not at all welcoming in fact down right grumpy. However, it was the customers who had reason to be grumpy, with a bottle of beer at the unreasonable and yes extortionate price of £5.80!!! This is beer that can be bought in Sainsburys at 3 for £5.00. A mark up is expected, but not over 200%! Other drinks were priced in a similar vein. Definitely extortionate

"weddings take precedence to visitors"
08/18/15 DouglasMidlands Derbyshire, United Kingdom
I stayed to visit friends and then ready for work on the Monday in a visit to our nearby Dorking offices. The Saturday visit to the Eastbourne airshow meant quite a late arrival and the carpark was ram full. The reason was soon clear, two or more wedding functions going on. Could I book a table for dinner? No, that won't be possible the restaurant is closed ... (Thanks for not telling me in advance). Oh well. Can I book a table for 4 on the Sunday evening? No, that's not possible, we never open on a Sunday. (Thanks again. This was going well for someone who has never been to Dorking before). My room was nice enough, what they call a Privilege room upstairs over the garden with a fridge and some goodies thrown in. The music downstairs faded quietly away and it was a peaceful place to rest. Except that I was wakened by slamming doors (and the doors really do slam when they open and close!) at some time after 2 am. I didn't appreciate that too much. The bar staff were only really busy rushing about for the wedding drinks orders on Saturday and the service for other visitors was absolutely detached (I was able to stand back and just watch, while I waited.. and waited). I didn't eat there and I didn't enjoy the bar much either. Breakfast is ok, albeit busy with the wedding people all busying themselves and stretching the staff to serve everyone. They did a good job though and the breakfast room is very pleasant and good food. Sunday evening was much quieter and after eating out again I did sleep very comfortably like a log. Overall, it's probably a good hotel. But if they insist on just becoming a wedding venue at weekends why don't they just say so. I didn't feel very welcome if I'm honest and the next time I visit our business in Dorking I will be staying elsewhere. Try it by all means, you might be lucky but you might not. I thought Mercure could be better than this.

"Superior double room with fabulously comfortable bed!"
08/17/15 dencatLondon London
Stayed Friday night/Saturday B&B - was great! We'd booked a superior "balcony" double room located in the garden block of rooms opposite the main block so, despite a wedding reception in full swing, we heard nil noise! The bed was high quality and room super clean. The bar staff were lovely and made delicious rum cocktails on request! Breakfast was one of the best we've had (lovely being able to choose well cooked bacon and sausages if you so wished, which to me is a big plus point!). We both think this hotel is beyond excellent - full size swimming pool with mini changing chalets too? Fab! Thank you to all the staff!
