"Not a good experience."
This hotel has a lot of negatives for a hotel of this price. 1. The room had a musty smell. 2. They charge a $10 fee for parking a day. It's not something they tell you until you check in and it's too late to cancel. The staff gives you as a reason for the parking charge that you have to pay for parking anywhere in downtown, which isn't true because […] we found free parking on the street downtown when we went out to eat. 3. I will NEVER book this hotel again! It's shabby and in need of a customer service overhaul. My cab driver explained that the hotel has been under new management about 4 or 5 times in the last couple of years. "False Advertising + TERRIBLE Service = AVOID"
Avoid this hotel at all costs. Originally booked for Saturday night through Tuesday morning, but plans changed so I contacted Hotels.com to update my stay to have check-in be Sunday night and check-out still be on Tuesday...FOUR DAYS IN ADVANCE. Received change confirmation email from Hotels.com and thought all was well. Was very surprised on Saturday […] when I saw my card had been charged when we hadn't checked into the hotel. Upon arrival I immediately asked the concierge why I was charged and I was informed their system had not been updated to show that our check in was now Sunday, not Saturday. I showed him the confirmation email from Hotels.com AND called Hotels.com to verify the change had been made (it had), but he refused to offer me a refund or apply the amount that was charged to my bill. He was unsympathetic and uncaring and offered no solutions whatsoever. I asked to speak to the manager, but he was out for the day. Came back the next morning, and there was a girl behind the desk that I spoke to and she immediately fixed the problem, saying she would apply the amount I was charged to my bill at checkout. Five days after checkout though, my account was showing a refund plus a charge, and the original amount I was billing was erased from my account. "Nice hotel, but interesting first impression"
I had an interesting stay. It wasn't bad, but different. After parking my car, it took me a while to find an entrance to the building. I think I entered in a side door and it seemed a little sketchy with people smoking and drinking there. After walking into the lobby I was very surprised to see fancy decorations and a beautiful lobby. I was then surprised again to find out that I was the guest of the day, which meant I got a free upgrade to a suite and my $10 parking fee was waived. When I got to my suite they had a very nice letter and goodie bag waiting for me. I also had towels in the shape of a swan on my bed--so fancy! After leaving Norfolk State University's homecoming activities and returning to the room around 11:00 pm, i was shocked to see people yelling, opening and slamming doors, and running through the hallways. Before, we settled into our room, we were met with an undesirable experience--a broken elevator. We were requested to take the service elevator. This was the 4th or 5th stay at the Norfolk Plaza and since the first time the friendliness of the staff, the fun atmosphere at the bar and the tasty food has remained the same. There don't seem to be any bad view rooms in this place ... I have experienced the sun rise over the ocean, the sun set over the harbor, the city lights ... What I most appreciate at the Norfolk Plaza is the diverse and multi-cultural clientel ... "TERRIBLE for my 8/13/14 stay"
My stay was horrible. I called prior to arrival to let them know I would be driving in from NY and wouldn't arrive until 3-4am. When I arrived at 4am they couldn't find me in the system. When the manager was called I was found in a "no show list" and they were trying to charge me fees. I get to the "non smoking room" it smelled worse then what I think […] a smoking room would smell like. The bathroom had mold all around everything. The carpetting was old. EVERYTHING was unplugged, so to find the cause of, nothing working, Im moving around furniture to gain access to the the outlets. The garbadge and floor had ashes from smoking, even found a cigar leftover on the floor near the desk. They have a sleep number bed tho, nice right? Nope it was set to the hardest level and was like a slab of rock, and it didn't work. Once I figured out I had to plug it in and play with the remote that worked for like 3 seconds then froze, i had to unplug and plug it back in to work for another 3 seconds, I got a chance to lie down, did I say it was 4am when i arrived and I just drove 8hrs in the rain from NY. The bar staff was very nice and fast for a cheap breakfast the next morning. I checked out and they had the nerve to charge an extra $10 on top of the hotel.com price for parking. Which is a captive charge because their is nowhere else to park. I will NEVER stay here again. I travel to Norfolk once a month for 1 night only. I will take my chances ANYWHERE ELSE.. "Place is falling apart"
First thing- the parking is down a flight of steps, and confusing to get to from the front. You have to take your luggage up a weird flight of steps just to get in the front door. Bad first impression. Our room on the 12th floor showed signs of water damage- the ceiling and window were dirty and stained. There was loose plaster on the floor. When we got back to the hotel after dinner, all other rooms had been sold, and they didn't reserve one for us. The next morning I spoke to the head of customer relations, who was very nice. I feel bad b/c they're obviously dealing with a hotel w/ problems and ownership that doesn't care. He moved us to a room on the 9th floor, which was clean, but the toilet ran the entire time we were there. Didn't just run, it flushed non-stop for the entire time. Also, our room on the 12 floor had no comforter. I just assumed they didn't have comforters at this hotel. But when we moved our new room did have comforters. So weird. If they took half the money they spent on remodeling the lobby, and put it towards fixing their rooms, they'd be in much better shape. The lobby being so nice is ridiculous. "Didn't feel safe"
I generally have no issue with checking in early with hotels. However, not only did the staff tell me they were not willing to accommodate my request, but they insulted me for even asking. The next strike was realizing the hotel was located in a very unsafe area. We found a few reviews after seeing the location which suggested that theft was huge in […] both the parking lot and within the rooms themselves. Next came the flickering power over the course of a half hour and an outdoor pool overlooking a main roadway. Our hotel room didn't have a deadbolt on it (just the screw holes where it should be) either, making us feel even less safe. Our shower head faced the center of the bathroom, where if you put the water to warm - the room would flood, so we had to take a cold shower. The beds were sleep by number - ours didn't work, so we tossed and turned on the hard mattress all night while attempting to sleep. Finally, they charge you $10 per car. There were 4 of us in 1 car and stayed in 2 rooms. Despite us informing the hotel we only had 1 vehicle, they still charged us for 2. To avoid a very stressful evening - do not stay in this hotel!!
