A tad too expensive for regular vacations but what a place to enjoy St John! 7 beautiful beaches to enjoy almost to yourself with exclusive service and to 5 mins to Cruz Bay to get entertained with local scene. St John is a paradise in a small package and Caneel Bay resort is one of the great ways to enjoy it.

This resort is beautiful! The water is a gorgeous blue and is warm and clean. They have 5 main separate beaches...so you can pick which is your favorite. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful and most guests seem to go there for just that. There were a few families there, but it was mostly couples. Caneel Bay was incredible. The beaches (there are 7 on the 170 acre property), were crystal clear, all white sand and beautiful. We stayed right on the beach. We could walk off our front patio, and within 20 steps we were in the water. If you are going on vacation to relax this is the place. If you are planning to watch TV and play video games go somewhere […] else because there are no TV's in the room. The rooms themselves are nice, but basic. The bed was very comfortable. I would give Caneel an "A". We stayed at the resort and had a memorable vacation. Everything was organized and easy. The staff was always friendly and extremely accommodating for everything, I was quite impressed. We were escorted to our room and given a quick brief from the staff as soon as we arrived. We enjoyed our room and proximity to beach - close! What makes Caneel different is that it has 7 beaches, very quiet, very low-key - tons of spectacular snorkeling! We took a jeep into town and drove around the island...from what we saw on St. Thomas and the rest of St. John, Caneel (to us) stands out as the best hotel there was, hands down. We enjoyed everything, the wildlife, scenery, water, resort services and the list goes on. We really did luck out based on all of my research and comparing nearby places including the Westin. We are glad we didn't go to a hotel, the resort was such a better experience. We could've done more, like visited BVI, St. Croix, but decided to relax more. Also, there were a handful of children/infants and we didn't feel out of place whatsoever. All of the other guests were also extremely friendly, we met several people that were returning to Caneel and have been vacationing there for awhile. Everyone is focused on the guests having a wonderful experience and we did. We loved the seven beautiful beaches. We snorkeled every data. Every beach has wonderful snorkeling. We especially liked the tour given by the grounds manager, Chaka, who has worked there for over 30 years. Unbelievable service from the time we stepped off the plane from the time we left on the ferry. There are always activities to do there from kayaking to snorkeling to tennis and everyone was helpful and friendly. If you are looking for an eco-luxury resort, in St. John USVI, look no further. If you want a casino or wild nightlife...go to St. Thomas. Having said that, I hope they polish the furniture and get the shades straightened out when they close for the hurricane season. Children of all ages share this beautiful island respectfully, graciously and with a certain élan that comes of leaving your problems at the dock! A straight shot from Boston to St. Thomas on Jet Blue was a bonus. A private ferry brings you to 'Paradise Rediscovered'. If you need TV and loud music or gambling, this is not for you. Everything else you need is here, including wild donkeys that roam the property and many deer who share the grasses with them. Ask the hostess for a rum painkiller and put on your flip flops. My husband and I took a much needed vacation to Caneel Bay in July 2012. This was our second trip to St. John and our first to Caneel. We will return to Caneel again. I would call Caneel rustic luxury. It is located within Virgin Islands National Park with gorgeous views from nearly everywhere. It includes: 7 beaches; hiking trails; kayaks, sailboats, […] rafts, snorkeling equip. (all inc. in the room price). This is a place for people who love the great outdoors, but wish to have the amenities of a nice hotel. Caneel balances this wonderfully. The rooms are unobtrusive and disbursed throughout the large resort. It is done so well, that you don't need to spend time with other guests unless you wish to. Since we spend little time in our room on vacation, we choose a less expensive room in the "garden view" area. It was a two minute walk to the beach and offered beautiful mountain vistas right outside our door. There are many donkeys and deer roaming the property as well as beautiful reefs, tropical fish and sea turtles in the bays. Hiking through the jungle was majestic. There are 3 restaurants which were only okay, however, the breakfast buffet (w/ tons of fruit, eggs benedict & belgian waffles made to order, etc.) was superb. They have bed & breakfast packages available which was what we had. I am glad that we didn't spring for any of meal plans though. There are plenty of good dining options for all budgets in town. Taxi's to Cruz Bay are readily available for $5 per person. ZoZo's (at Gallows Point) was our favorite restaurant in Cruz Bay. Caneel has a courtesy office at the St. Thomas airport where they collect your luggage, provide you w/ taxi service and ferry rides on their private ferry. Having visited other places in St. John in the past, this was wonderfully convenient by comparison. The beaches are just as beautiful and serene as they look in the pictures. The staff are very helpful and the rooms are cool and comfortable. But be prepared to feel a little like a prisoner on the resort unless you have unlimited funds to get around. Although they claim to have 4 restaurants on the resort at any given time no more than 2 are open (often […] it's just one). The food prices are OUTRAGEOUS and the food's only okay -- not worth it. We got tired of eating the same overpriced meals every day. If you want to leave the resort you can rent a jeep at $100 a day or take cab ($10 to town for one person roundtrip). So as a couple we had to add $20 for each meal in town and you need to know where you are going before you head off because walking around town is difficult and dangerous with few sidewalks. If the hotel offered a shuttle once or twice a day off the resort it would be a huge improvement. Also watch out for their ferry -- if you're trying to save a few dollars a ferry from town is $6 a person vs. the $55 per person for the resort's ferry. No phones in the rooms mean a walk anytime you need something. That said it is a quiet and relaxing vacation. Read more

We were met at the resort by the staff with cool towels in hand. We were given a quick tour of the offerings as we were escorted to our rooms. Ours was a beach front which was spectaculur.
