"Passable lodging with small rooms"
Had a brief one night stay. Staff were friendly and the lobby area was nice enough, but everything is small. Our room (one double bed) was tiny. The bathroom was good-sized but had no vanity/counter space to speak of. Not a good choice if you need much space in your hotel room. Also, the facility is dated, and room amenities were limited considering […] the price. Would stay here again only if no better option was available. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The room was clean and cheery with a warm paint color. It was on the small side but typical of downtown hotels and certainly adequate. We got a really good price for this hotel so we were satisfied overall. What we had a hard time getting past was the funky odor of the place - worse than the frequent stale smell you get in hotels. The location was convenient […] but the street just isn't in the greatest area especially for a family. I also was disappointed that it cost money to use the computers. We had phones and a tablet but booking the next phase of our vacation would have been much easier if I could have used a computer. My kids appreciated the complimentary hot chocolate. "Location is good, hotel is just ok"
Hotel is located in downtown Vancouver, walking access to Granville Island, the surrounding blocks along Granville street are home to several Discos, Clubs, Pubs and Bars, so there is loud noise at night , and it could feel a little shady when walking at night. For the price I paid, it was a great deal. Basic hotel amenities, parking is not free, WIFI […] is free, bathroom was clean and plenty of hot water in the shower, no breakfast. Would suggest asking for a room in the top floors to avoid the noise (room was on the first floor, had no problems sleeping, but other people may feel it was too noisy). For parking I used a public parking facility 2 blocks away instead of the hotel parking, I personally felt that the public parking was safer and cheaper. There are several restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops nearby. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Better than its price"
This hotel is pretty good. The location is perfect!! It is right in front of the bus stop, really close to Granville Island and downtown. Rooms are okay. They are small but clean and offer all supplies we need. Most importantly it is really cheap for these advantages!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Vancouver Dear guest, Thank you very much for your review. We are very happy you have enjoyed your stay with us and we hope to see you here soon. Thank you for your business.
Located right on Granville Ave., which means that you're going to have a loud stay on a Saturday night, and only slightly quieter on other nights. Room is quite small, especially the bathroom, where the shelf over the toilet is long enough that you have to lean forward while you're sitting. Water pressure is also quite low in the shower.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Vancouver Dear Kromiumman, Thank you very much for your review. Unfortunately our rooms are on the small side, given the fact that we are 100 year old heritage building. And yes our location right in the heart of entertainmnet district can be somewhat noisy, depending where do you live, in the city or in the suburbs. Thank you for letting us know about water pressure, we will have it adjusted accordingly. Thank you for your business.
"Descent hotel for the price and location"
I was hear for a short weekend stay. The room and bathroom were clean but the decor was very dated. The staff was very friendly and helpful. This place is close to all the clubs and lounges on Granville Street and not too far from English Bay or the marina. Its walking distance from Robson Street.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Response by Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Vancouver Dear Ronnie, Thank you for your review. We are heritage building and unfortunately the size of the room, is something that we can not do much about. However, we do have large suites available, and all is required is for our guests to say something to us, so we know that you are experiencing discomfort in your room, so we can take action and help you right away. I'm sorry to hear you did not feel comfortable to go outside, we are located in very vibrant neighbourhood with restaurants open till 1am and the street is always full with people, Downtown Vancouver is place where people live, just next door to us are three high-rises, so plenty of locals are around.
I was very happy with my stay. And I will return. excellent location great price and staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Vancouver Dear guest, thank you very much for staying with us. We are happy that you were happy. Hope to see you here soon.
Car got broken into. Floor smelt like period blood. Service lady was very rude while we were trying to tape up our broken car window. Reccmending parking that wasn't safe at all. I wouldn't ever stay here againGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Vancouver Dear Jess, Once again, we are very sorry to hear that your car got broken into. Parkade that was given to you as few other choices for parking your car locks up for the night , from 11pm - 6 am, which prevents theft and has staff patrolling it constantly. It is highly recommended not to leave any valuables in the car. I'm sorry to hear that your i-pod was stolen and few other items. I'm also sorry that you feel that our service lady was rude, it is not everyday that she sees guests throwing broken glass all over the parking lot instead of just simply handing it to her, so she can throw it out in proper garbage bin, and this would help other guests also, so they don't get flat tire, or their children don't pick up glass with their bare hands. Once again, I'm sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us.
"Reliable, clean and friendly"
I've stayed here a few times, the rooms are somewhat small and there can be a funny smell in the halls, but the rooms are always very clean, have great amenities and the staff is always extremely friendly and helpful. Parking can add up, but for the central location to Granville St. bars and everything downtown, it's great value for money.Genuine Expedia guest review
Response by Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Vancouver Dear Ryan, Happy to hear that you had a good stay with us and are our repeat guest. Thank you for your business.
"Great location- Terrible parking options!"
Parking is tough in downtown areas! I was prepared for high cost and few options. The hotel itself does not own a garage or a lot. So you must snag a space in an office building garage nearby or in a surface lot. It took us literally 90 minutes to find a spot that was available. This was in part because we arrived after 10 PM and some garages we found […] nearby were closed, except to exit. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Vancouver Dear guest, Unfortunately the mayor of our city is a bicycle entusiast and every single parking lot around us has been turned into residential building. You ahve probably noticed also all these bike lanes that all of a sudden we have. I'm very sorry about the city parking situation, residents are forced to take transit to work, charges for monthly parking skyrocketed and all we have left are few parkades that residents and visitors share now.
Clean comfortable convienient , I will stay again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"the last time."
Frankly, I didn't enjoy my time there in the least. I had the very last room, on the 2nd floor , in a corner face hydro poles and transformers, the room had a bad odor of urine , it was cold, as they provided a small floor heater to take the chill off the floor area..and the bedding was old, and who knows how often the top blankets were cleaned last. […] the bottom line is just that, YOU GET WHAT YOU BARGAIN FOR.. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Response by Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Vancouver Dear Jay, Thank you for your frank review. If there is anything wrong with anything in our hotel, we would love to know about it, so we can fix it right away for you, and your stay does not ahve to result in a big dissapoitment. Rooms in the back of the hotel are very quiet rooms and many of our business travellers enjoy them more, than the front rooms, that are located on a busy street. You be our boss, you tell us where you would like to be if you don't like a room we pick for you. We have plenty of rooms to chose from and we would like to help you any way possible, to make your stay a happier one. Thank you
"Convenient location, old building. Cant beat price"
For a cheap hotel downtown on Granville you can't really go wrong with this one. The building is a little old but the rooms were clean and everything functioned well.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Beware the parking fee! But otherwise good."
Stayed here for 3 nights whilst travelling and stopping briefly in Vancouver to some sight-seeing. The hotel is very conveniently located and our room was clean with all the basic amenities so no complaints there. The room we were in was pretty small, but for a short stay it wasn't a problem. The TV was slightly fuzzy on some channels sometimes but […] it was no real bother. Staff were also all helpful and certain staff were very friendly as well. HOWEVER, if you have a car bear in mind the $20 a night fee to use their car park! For us that meant an extra $60 we hadn't accounted for! We were trying to travel on a tight budget too so it was irritating. It is not a secure car park either as it's just off the high street with all the cars clear in view and easily accessible to potential thieves (so where does my $20 go?! Clearly not extra security!). There is also no breakfast, and I've stayed at cheaper places that provide a good breakfast so I don't see the lower cost as an excuse. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Vancouver Dear Matt, Thank you for writing your review. Glad you enjoyed your stay. I'm very sorry, but since we were fortunate to host Olympics in 2010, our parking tax went up from 7% to 21%, I guess we have to pay for Olympics somehow. All parking in our area increased in price, now if you put $ 2 in meter, it gives you 20 minutes of parking. We do our best to keep prices as reasonable as possible. Please note, our parking lot is under 24hr surveillance and also at night we have security, whose duties are to keep an eye on our lot. I'm glad overall you enjoyed our nice city. Thank you for staying with us.
"Fair price hotel in good area"
I thought it was a pretty good hotel at a fair price in a fun area of town. I will stay there again for sure. Also the hotel staff were helpful and friendly.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
when I checked in with my 86 year old mother, the rooms had no heat...the wall radiators were not working, they gave us small space heaters, but the rooms were 55 degrees...they were uncooperative and even though we checked out within 30 minutes of arriving, the hotel insisted on charging me for the two rooms for one night....I had to go thru hotels.com […] to make a complaint and explain that i had immediately checked into a much nicer hotel a few bldings down that had heat in every room. I would never consider staying at howard johnsons in downtown. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"No Free Parking is a big down"
We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights, at the first night the receptionist told us the paid ticket has been used up, so we could not park our car in the hotel's parking lots; we had to find another paid parking lot 2 or 3 blocks away which is very inconvenient given that we have a 2 years old child. The second night we got a paid ticket which cost $19. […] This is much worse than another hotel we lived in aother night which was in the same area but got free parking lot (and much better/newer settings). Other than that the facilities are OK, especially there is a cozy dining area in 1.5 floor where you got microwave, hot chocolate/coffee for free and we liked to eat some take-out food there. Another down side is the window is not good in sound-proof, our room is at 4th floor, but the noise on the street was still very loud the first night (many people were having Halloween party there). The good thing is that you got convenience in downtown. But as mentioned before, another hotel we stayed got same location but with much better settings (the price was actually close or even cheaper). So if you could book some other downtown hotels with free parking, better or newer settings, like Comfort Inn, you need to choose the latter. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Location, Small Room"
My room was a little funky. I had someone come up to spray the room with Air Freshner and they gave me the bottle to do the work. I sprayed and it smelled good for a little while, but the room smelled like Bleach and the hallway smelled like Cat litter. Otherwise it was a good place to sleep and close to where I wanted to be.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Ideally located in downtown Vancouver"
The hotel is located in the main entertainment district of downtown Vancouver. There are numerous bars, clubs and restaurants within a 3 km radius. The hotel itself is comfortable, with nice clean beds, but small(ish) rooms. Don't expect luxury but don't expect a dump either.Genuine Expedia guest review
Stayed here on a Friday night with a few friends. Went here because it's on the main strip where all the nightlife is, and it was so convenient. Nice hotel, good room but a little smaller than expected. Excellent service. Parking lot for hotel is $19 a day which isn't too bad. Overall not a bad choice to stay if you don't mind a bar below the rooms […] and the loudness from the nightlife scene :) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Value Hotel on Granville St."
The Howard Johnson was the cheapest hotel on Granville Street the night we went to Vancouver. Restaurants, fast food, bars, clubs are all right there on the same street. English Bay Beach and Granville Island are within comfortable walking distance as well. Considering what we paid, the hotel was very nice. No regrets on this stay.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Don't be surprised by the parking charge!"
The stay was average as you can see from my mostly 3 ratings. I was super upset that I was charged $19 for parking (not disclosed prior to booking) Please contact me if you have any questions. I'm at 360-933-1109. I also thought the lady that checked us in was rude. Not horribly, but not polite considering we're her guests!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It was extremely loud at night because of the bar and clubs right outside, and I was unable to move during my 3 night stay because "everything was full." The floor was dirty and the comforter was disgusting. The wifi didn't work the first night, and the passwords change every night and only work on one device (like phone only or computer only, otherwise […] you get locked out). "Decent hotel in bad location"
Hotel is nice, and price was mid-range. I liked the free, no-hassle wifi. However, I wouldn't stay there again due to Granville Street being one with tattoo shops, peep shows, dive bars, and bums sleeping in doorways for a couple blocks in either direction. Also, the distance to where I needed to be was a little too far. This location isn't as convenient […] to shopping, restaurants, and waterfront as other downtown hotels. There is also no shuttle to get to/from hotel, train, or other places one might need to visit. For the price, I didn't quite get the value I hoped for. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Trouble with Front desk"
It was a nice location in downtown. We loved Vancouver, but the my wife had a lot of trouble with the front desk lady. She was really rude to her and talked down to her. We wouldn't stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
When we arrived at Howard Johnson on July 23, 2013 around 12noon, the young lady behind the counter was not too pleasant to us. This is our first time for our family to visit Vancouver. She seems in a hurry to answer our question so she can move on to do something else. Also, when we saw her the next day, we asked about public transportation to Grouse […] Mountain. She said something really fast as if someone from overseas can grasp everything she said in a hurry. We ended up walking the entire way because we feel it is too difficult to ask her to explain again. In the evening, there was another lady and gentleman working, she was very nice to us and took the time to go out of her way to explain things to us.(She wears glasses and slightly older than the other receptionist). I can tell she cares about her job and the people who stays there. She actually pays attention to us. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

Very costly experience. "Good location, but kind of uncomfortable"
Pros: - good location, close to downtown and Yaletown; bus stop literally in front of the hotel's door. - bar/restaurant on the first floor. Cons: - the main concern is the room cleanness. "Great Location, But Not For Parking At The Hotel"
The hotel is decent overall; the location is very central to everything and the neighborhood is not as bad a other reviewers make it out to be. Granville Street is very busy, so if you have a room facing the street, expect noise. Otherwise, our room was decent and relatively quiet. We didn't spend much time in the room so it was a good deal for us. Our […] low rating comes from the parking situation at the hotel. The hotel only has a small outdoor lot next to it and it is first come, first serve. When we booked, the amenities mentioned that parking was available. When we arrived, however, the front desk said that no spots were available for the weekend and that we had to find parking elsewhere in the city. The worst part about it was that the hotel and the staff did not have a backup option to recommend to us. We felt this was very poor customer service and would recommend avoiding this hotel if you have a car. If you must stay here and need overnight parking, the parking structure on Seymour just past Nelson by the Starbucks has covered parking for a reasonable daily rate. "A place to sleep only"
The location was perfect to attend the Vancouver Film Festival. It was also convenient (within a couple blocks) of the Hop-on, Hop-off bus tour. We were able to park our car and get around the city using the bus. The Howard Johnson is not a place to spend time in your room. The rooms are small and old fashioned window airconditioners kept me up most […] of the night. The staff was friendly and helpful in finding us a quiet room, so it could have been worse if we were on the street side with noise from the Pub downstairs. We were careful not to leave anything in view through the windows of our parked car. There was a car prowler in the lot when we left. It is not a nice neighborhood but convenience made up for it. The room cost was too high for what it was and we paid an additional $20 to park in the lot overnight. Very limited parking available, so check in early. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
