"Convenient location, old building. Cant beat price"
For a cheap hotel downtown on Granville you can't really go wrong with this one. The building is a little old but the rooms were clean and everything functioned well.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Beware the parking fee! But otherwise good."
Stayed here for 3 nights whilst travelling and stopping briefly in Vancouver to some sight-seeing. The hotel is very conveniently located and our room was clean with all the basic amenities so no complaints there. The room we were in was pretty small, but for a short stay it wasn't a problem. The TV was slightly fuzzy on some channels sometimes but […] it was no real bother. Staff were also all helpful and certain staff were very friendly as well. HOWEVER, if you have a car bear in mind the $20 a night fee to use their car park! For us that meant an extra $60 we hadn't accounted for! We were trying to travel on a tight budget too so it was irritating. It is not a secure car park either as it's just off the high street with all the cars clear in view and easily accessible to potential thieves (so where does my $20 go?! Clearly not extra security!). There is also no breakfast, and I've stayed at cheaper places that provide a good breakfast so I don't see the lower cost as an excuse. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Response by Howard Johnson Hotel Downtown Vancouver Dear Matt, Thank you for writing your review. Glad you enjoyed your stay. I'm very sorry, but since we were fortunate to host Olympics in 2010, our parking tax went up from 7% to 21%, I guess we have to pay for Olympics somehow. All parking in our area increased in price, now if you put $ 2 in meter, it gives you 20 minutes of parking. We do our best to keep prices as reasonable as possible. Please note, our parking lot is under 24hr surveillance and also at night we have security, whose duties are to keep an eye on our lot. I'm glad overall you enjoyed our nice city. Thank you for staying with us.
"Fair price hotel in good area"
I thought it was a pretty good hotel at a fair price in a fun area of town. I will stay there again for sure. Also the hotel staff were helpful and friendly.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
when I checked in with my 86 year old mother, the rooms had no heat...the wall radiators were not working, they gave us small space heaters, but the rooms were 55 degrees...they were uncooperative and even though we checked out within 30 minutes of arriving, the hotel insisted on charging me for the two rooms for one night....I had to go thru hotels.com […] to make a complaint and explain that i had immediately checked into a much nicer hotel a few bldings down that had heat in every room. I would never consider staying at howard johnsons in downtown. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"No Free Parking is a big down"
We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights, at the first night the receptionist told us the paid ticket has been used up, so we could not park our car in the hotel's parking lots; we had to find another paid parking lot 2 or 3 blocks away which is very inconvenient given that we have a 2 years old child. The second night we got a paid ticket which cost $19. […] This is much worse than another hotel we lived in aother night which was in the same area but got free parking lot (and much better/newer settings). Other than that the facilities are OK, especially there is a cozy dining area in 1.5 floor where you got microwave, hot chocolate/coffee for free and we liked to eat some take-out food there. Another down side is the window is not good in sound-proof, our room is at 4th floor, but the noise on the street was still very loud the first night (many people were having Halloween party there). The good thing is that you got convenience in downtown. But as mentioned before, another hotel we stayed got same location but with much better settings (the price was actually close or even cheaper). So if you could book some other downtown hotels with free parking, better or newer settings, like Comfort Inn, you need to choose the latter. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Location, Small Room"
My room was a little funky. I had someone come up to spray the room with Air Freshner and they gave me the bottle to do the work. I sprayed and it smelled good for a little while, but the room smelled like Bleach and the hallway smelled like Cat litter. Otherwise it was a good place to sleep and close to where I wanted to be.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Location and Value"
Very nice moderate hotel- prime location. Well maintained and comfortable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Ideally located in downtown Vancouver"
The hotel is located in the main entertainment district of downtown Vancouver. There are numerous bars, clubs and restaurants within a 3 km radius. The hotel itself is comfortable, with nice clean beds, but small(ish) rooms. Don't expect luxury but don't expect a dump either.Genuine Expedia guest review
Stayed here on a Friday night with a few friends. Went here because it's on the main strip where all the nightlife is, and it was so convenient. Nice hotel, good room but a little smaller than expected. Excellent service. Parking lot for hotel is $19 a day which isn't too bad. Overall not a bad choice to stay if you don't mind a bar below the rooms […] and the loudness from the nightlife scene :) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Value Hotel on Granville St."
The Howard Johnson was the cheapest hotel on Granville Street the night we went to Vancouver. Restaurants, fast food, bars, clubs are all right there on the same street. English Bay Beach and Granville Island are within comfortable walking distance as well. Considering what we paid, the hotel was very nice. No regrets on this stay.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Don't be surprised by the parking charge!"
The stay was average as you can see from my mostly 3 ratings. I was super upset that I was charged $19 for parking (not disclosed prior to booking) Please contact me if you have any questions. I'm at 360-933-1109. I also thought the lady that checked us in was rude. Not horribly, but not polite considering we're her guests!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
It was extremely loud at night because of the bar and clubs right outside, and I was unable to move during my 3 night stay because "everything was full." The floor was dirty and the comforter was disgusting. The wifi didn't work the first night, and the passwords change every night and only work on one device (like phone only or computer only, otherwise […] you get locked out). Neighborhood was pretty sketchy too. Not worth the money I paid. The only good thing was the closeness to my friends. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Practical Stop For Short Stay"
Friendly staff made our stay pleasant and comfy. The room was clean. The hotel is near the club scene, so there was some minor noise after dark.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Reasonable room semi rough area."
Just a little too far away to be really close to Yaletown.......just across the bridge from Island.....not so bad.....tattoo parlor across street if you want something to remember your stay.....helpful staff.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Close to lots of restaurants"
Hojo was clean. There was a window unit in the room which was a little noisy. Overall, not a bad place to stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
I enjoyed my stay at the Howard Johnson hotel however next time I will be more careful not to choose a room at the main street due to the noise.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Decent hotel in bad location"
Hotel is nice, and price was mid-range. I liked the free, no-hassle wifi. However, I wouldn't stay there again due to Granville Street being one with tattoo shops, peep shows, dive bars, and bums sleeping in doorways for a couple blocks in either direction. Also, the distance to where I needed to be was a little too far. This location isn't as convenient […] to shopping, restaurants, and waterfront as other downtown hotels. There is also no shuttle to get to/from hotel, train, or other places one might need to visit. For the price, I didn't quite get the value I hoped for. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Trouble with Front desk"
It was a nice location in downtown. We loved Vancouver, but the my wife had a lot of trouble with the front desk lady. She was really rude to her and talked down to her. We wouldn't stay there again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
When we arrived at Howard Johnson on July 23, 2013 around 12noon, the young lady behind the counter was not too pleasant to us. This is our first time for our family to visit Vancouver. She seems in a hurry to answer our question so she can move on to do something else. Also, when we saw her the next day, we asked about public transportation to Grouse […] Mountain. She said something really fast as if someone from overseas can grasp everything she said in a hurry. We ended up walking the entire way because we feel it is too difficult to ask her to explain again. In the evening, there was another lady and gentleman working, she was very nice to us and took the time to go out of her way to explain things to us.(She wears glasses and slightly older than the other receptionist). I can tell she cares about her job and the people who stays there. She actually pays attention to us. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
A dance club was next to my room, I learned all the current rap songs but I only got to sleep from 3am - 6am, my go to work time…what else can I say…I loved it - NOT.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Very costly experience. The clerk showed the map and where parking is available but did not elaborate the parking rules on that particular street or at least give a warning that at a certain time I have to move my vehicle. My vehicle ended up being towed towed the next morning. The recommended street is a main thoroughfare and as such prohibits parking […] between 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM, other streets nearby doesn't have the same rules. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Good location, but kind of uncomfortable"
Pros: - good location, close to downtown and Yaletown; bus stop literally in front of the hotel's door. - bar/restaurant on the first floor. Cons: - the main concern is the room cleanness. We had a great stay at this HoJo! It was a great value. The room was pretty small, but very comfortable and clean. The bed was particularly comfortable as well. Very central location in Vancouver. "Great Location, But Not For Parking At The Hotel"
The hotel is decent overall; the location is very central to everything and the neighborhood is not as bad a other reviewers make it out to be. Granville Street is very busy, so if you have a room facing the street, expect noise. Otherwise, our room was decent and relatively quiet. We didn't spend much time in the room so it was a good deal for us. Our […] low rating comes from the parking situation at the hotel. The hotel only has a small outdoor lot next to it and it is first come, first serve. When we booked, the amenities mentioned that parking was available. When we arrived, however, the front desk said that no spots were available for the weekend and that we had to find parking elsewhere in the city. The worst part about it was that the hotel and the staff did not have a backup option to recommend to us. We felt this was very poor customer service and would recommend avoiding this hotel if you have a car. If you must stay here and need overnight parking, the parking structure on Seymour just past Nelson by the Starbucks has covered parking for a reasonable daily rate. "poorly maintained hotel"
Needs some urgent renovations & maintenance. Everything is of low quality not worth the price you payGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I was told by my Hotels.com booking agent that parking was included in the booking charge and there would be no extra fee. "A place to sleep only"
The location was perfect to attend the Vancouver Film Festival. It was also convenient (within a couple blocks) of the Hop-on, Hop-off bus tour. We were able to park our car and get around the city using the bus. The Howard Johnson is not a place to spend time in your room. The rooms are small and old fashioned window airconditioners kept me up most […] of the night. The staff was friendly and helpful in finding us a quiet room, so it could have been worse if we were on the street side with noise from the Pub downstairs. We were careful not to leave anything in view through the windows of our parked car. There was a car prowler in the lot when we left. It is not a nice neighborhood but convenience made up for it. The room cost was too high for what it was and we paid an additional $20 to park in the lot overnight. Very limited parking available, so check in early. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Howard Johnson-on Granville- has an exceptionally friendly and helpful staff! They were always helpful with information, help, and friendly words! The rooms are "big-city" compact, but were always serviced and clean. This location is wonderfully central. Enjoyed our Vancouver stay with HoJo!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Quite an unpleasant stay"
The friendly desk clerk got me checked in quickly and easily. As we walked up the stairs though, my impression of the hotel dropped. A horrible smell of ammonia and other cleaning supplies saturated the air in the hallway and to a lesser extent, my room. The bathroom seemed in disrepair and after feeling a breeze and clear noises from outside, I went […] to close the window, only to realize they were already closed, just useless. Sleeping was hard because the sounds of the street came in clearly through the window and the music from the adjacent nightclub shook my bed on every pulse of the bass. A decent location compromise between Yaletown to the east and shopping to the north, but not on a particularly good location itself. I recommend finding another hotel. We got a room on the 1st floor and apparently it was directly over a restaurant/club. We could hear the music all night, following by people in the alley throwing away glass bottles afterwards. "Worst Vancouver Stay to date."
DO NOT stay at the HoJo. The quality of service was the worst I have ever recieved while staying in Vancouver, and I frequent hotels in Vancouver, let's just say I will never be returning to this one. The employees at the front desk were rude and did not pay attention to us during our check in, we were not even told what room number we were staying […] in before we were shoved our keys with a quick abrupt "BYE" from the employee checking us in. "No sleep due to noise from disco next door"
Outdoor parking lot is conveniently next door to entrance, costing $15/night. Couldn't sleep due to noise from disco (stereo system and people talking).
