"Affordable by European High Price Standards"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Feb 26, 2013
Nice place. Walking distance to metro. If you do not have heavy suitcases then take the metro from Airport instead of cabs. Great spread for Breakfast buffet. We had a suite. Only one bathroom. An extra half bath would be prefect or at least an extra sink (instead of a lot of cupboard space). Friendly and helpful staff.

"Great location-Hotel was mediocre"
The hotel location is perfect. However, as soon as we saw the room we realized that it wasn't anything close to what is portrayed on the online pictures. We complained and they upgraded our room. The second day, they forgot to change two of the bathroom towels. They left the used towels there. The breakfast buffet, the staff and the location were really […] good and I would stay there if I could get a better rate.. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Terrific location; excellent value"
This hotel is close to the Prado and to the Atocha train station--a simple bus ride to/from the airport. What more could one ask for? Hotel is clean and pleasant; staff is helpful and attentive. Many rooms overlook the park. Surrounding area has many restaurants, cafes, bars, small convenience stores. etc.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A good choice"
Great location, helpful staff, exceptional breakfast buffet. A great choice if you are taking the train to or from Atocha Station.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"NH Nacional Hotel - at the center of Madrid"
Excellent location with 3-5 minutes walking to the Metro, train station. Bus stops and Madrid Vision Tourist bus stop is right at the front door of the hotel. Rooms are of Adequate size but some of the furnitures are showing the age (the chair unhosltery and the cushions can certainly get some help !) Room had wooden floor but no area rugs or carpets. Bathroom […] are big and well equiped. No coffe or tea in the room and don't expect the iron/ironing board ! The lobby furnitures were really shabby and definitely needs some uplifting. Lobby has free wifi for 30 minutes. Front desk staff helpful and speaks managable English. However overall good value for money. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Fully Suitable inexpensive hotel & location"
First of all, one cannot book a 4* hotel and expect the Ritz! That won´t happen anywhere. You always get what you pay for! The place was surely once fancier, but it still has some sort of charm. Rooms are rather small and the only quiet ones have no view, but are surely quieter than the ones leading to the street. Sheets, towels and bathroom were all […] very clean! The location is FABULOUS if you want to be at walking distance to ALL major museums. The Reina Sofia is just across the street and the Caixa Forum-which always has good & free exhibitions is just half a block up the Paseo del Prado (by the way...the terrace restaurant is beautiful and has an excellent cook)!. The Thyssen Bornamiza is just 8-10 minutes and also the Prado. If you want to do the tourist hop on and off bus tours, those are great offers at just around €20 for 2 days, and those over 60, pay as little as €11!!!!!!!!!!! The stop is smack in front of the hotel! Free internet at reception for 30 minutes daily. If you aren´t fussy, the Museo del Jamon...has inexpensive breakfasts, but otherwise there aren´t many nice places to eat at nearby. The ONLY other place we quite enjoyed on the square before Reina Sofía (left)...called, Restaurante El Tres. Excellent FRESH FISH at only €20/ or menus at just around €12. Good service and good food. All in all, we certainly recommend this NH as a suitable, inexpensive, decent and well located place. Sure, it ain´t the Ritz, but you also ain´t paying it! GO and ENJOY Madrid! "Seven Stars"
Seven fives out of five should say it all. I really liked everything about this hotel. Even down to the room design with its double bathroom arrangement plus double doors to eliminate all corridor noise. Gold for that architect. Falling out of bed into the Prado and the Reina Sofia was okay too.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Large, comfortable rooms and friendly, helpful staff. Walking distance to all the art galleries and straight across from the park. Easy access to metro and the 'hop on' bus stops outside. Reception can get busy.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice Hotel, but you should know . . ."
This hotel is close to the beautiful Retiro Park and the Prado and other museums. The rooms are clean, beds comfortable and the staff is pleasant and attentive. There is a buffet style breakfast that is good. But if you like to sleep at night, make sure to get a room that does not face the street and especially not on the lower floors. The level of […] noise (traffic, sirens, people yelling, etc.) is unbelievable and it goes on throughout the night with no let up. The free wifi is so slow that it is pretty much unusable. The premium wifi service worked well enough but is way too expensive. The login is complicated (you have to get codes from the front desk for each device for each 24 hr period) and the system logs you off after any short period of inactivity. There could be better air circulation in the rooms, especially in the ones that don't face the street. The water temperature in the showers was hard to control and water pressure was not so great. There is no real restaurant in the hotel--at least we couldn't find it. I think they have a dining room for large groups or for meetings but it is open only by special request. This is a real drawback. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Good central hotel"
Nice hotel - void of some personality though. Lifts VERY slow given the hotel was catering to a number of large groups so for work I probably would not choose to stay there again. Entry/exit out of main doors difficult due to the set up with opposing doors opened - made worse when large groups going in and out as there was only one door and thus a big […] queue. "Great place to stay in Madrid"
The location (opposite Atocha Station) was fantastic. There are many restaurants in the area and the transport connections are excellent. The hotel was a bit noisy with all the traffic and the window open, but closed it was fine. Wi fi is now free in the rooms too.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Why lie?"
Good location and nice rooms, BUT, we were given a room on the second floor and there was very loud music until 6am! We complained and the receptionist told us that, "groups of boys were staying at the hotel and having parties." We then realised there is a nightclub under the hotel open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from midnight until 5.30-6am so […] any room above this we be really noisey with the base booming through the ceiling. We were moved to a room on the fifth floor which was quiet, but did not like being lied to by the staff. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great location"
The staff at this hotel were very friendly and accommodating. The person checking me in actually noticed that I had booked a smoking room and asked me if I would like that changed. Was very thankful for that. I think when booking with Expedia you often get put in a smoking room as it has happened before. The only problem I have with this hotel is the […] fact it was filled with teenaged girls staying there with a tour. They overtook the lobby and slammed hotel doors all night. Also would like to say if want a quiet night don't go to Madrid! People are partying in the streets until about 6 am. This hotel is on a busy street and listened to people all night. This isn't a fault of the hotel but it will keep you awake. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Excellent value for money in central Madrid."
Couldn't fault this hotel. We have stayed in many places in Madrid and other NH hotels here and elsewhere in Spain. It is perfectly functional, clean and comfortable. The most important thing when assessing rooms in Spanish cities is soundproofing. Given that we facing onto one of Madrid's busiest roads (Paseo del Prado), double glazing and automated […] shutters allowed us peaceful nights' sleeping ~ even over the weekend. Location is fabulous for those who are in transit (metro or Atocha station). All galleries are within 10 minutes walking distance and Retiro Park is on your doorstep. Highly recommended! As is normal in Madrid you are never far from excellent places to eat and drink. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Hotel NH Nacional"
We spent 6 nights in NH Nacional, the service is very good, excellent breakfast, clean facilities, friendly staff and good location. The hotel is between two busy streets and next to a roundabout, so there is street noise even during the night, this might be problem for light sleepers. The hotel is quite near the metro so it is easy to get around […] Madrid. Atocha train station is in easy walking distance, with excellent connection to Barajas Airport for less than €3/person. The botanical garden is on the other side of the street, Parque Del Retiro one block away, museums like Reina Sofia, Prado and Thyssen and all close by. If something is to be improved, the WiFi was too expensive, with three digit room price, it could be included. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Would stay here again"
I have been to Madrid a lot, and I have always got a hotel near Sol. This time I chose Nh Nacional near Atocha. This proved to be a good move. First, location: literally around the corner from the Prado museum, Reina Sofia museum, and the Atocha train/metro stations. The bus stop outside the front door of the hotel is also a bus turistico stop. It […] is a short walk to c/ Huertas (5 min), Thyssen-Bornemisza museum (10 min),pl Santa Ana (15 min), and just a little further to Sol and Plaza Mayor (20 min). I loved the location of this hotel. The hotel itself was clean and comfortable. The only downside is that only the lobby had free wifi. If you wanted wifi in your room you had to pay, a lot. We were give then choice of an inside or outside room, and chose inside as Paseo del Prado is a major thoroughfare and there is a lot of traffic. There was no noise from the street or other guests that we could hear in our room. The breakfast was typical of Spanish hotels: cereals, pastries, fresh juices (pear-mango was delicious), meats, cheeses, etc., AND eggs to order. Good quality, great variety. I would definitely stay here again, and I would reccomend it to others without reservation. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Noise level"
We face the problem of noise from the downstair particularly at night. Apparently the hotel staff told us that hotel aircondition system was not working. It was too hot and stuffy unless the window was opened.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Ideally located for visiting Madrid's main art galleries"
The Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia galleries are all a few minutes walk away, but do not miss the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, which is a few stops on the Metro. The city sightseeing bus stops outside the hotel, but our experience of this was poor. The shady Real Jardin Botanico is right across the paseo, the splendid Parque del Retiro is nearby, and the […] Estacion de Atocha with its high speed trains to the medieval hill town of Toledo is across the square opposite the hotel. This hotel is adequate rather than luxurious or stylish. The staff are helpful enough, but the atmosphere is rather impersonal. Breakfast is very good but expensive - try for an inclusive B&B rate. The hotel's Internet is also expensive - to check in online use the agency 200m up Avenida de Atocha. Local eateries are rather mixed but local branches of Museo del Jamon and Faborit are great for a snack. The hotel does not serve dinner, so cut up through the side street towards Puerta del Sol for a fixed price deal. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
