The location is great. The rooms were average to above average. If you have a pet they put you in an old section of the hotel that is more motel like where you access your room from the ocean side, so your view includes everyone walking on the balcony in front of, and looking into your room. The view made up for the hard beds and lack of efficient cooling system. Windows hardly open and no A/C, but the Oregon Coast doesn't often get 88 degree days! Location is great, breakfast in the Cafe was great.

Our first impression of our room was not good. The decor was severly outdated, the room wasn't as clean as it should be, the TV was smaller than 24" and NOT a flat screen. When i brought this to the attention of the hotel manager he did a very good job of relocating us and upgrading us to a better room in the main hotel building. Knowing that we could have stayed 4 miles down the road at the Best Western for the same price with better quallity rooms we will do that next time. Also when my husband and I wanted to order a few drinks from room service, room service didn't answer, called the front desk they told us room service is booked and transfered us to the bar where the bartender belittled me for wanting to order room service for only drinks and not food........apparently she had never stayed in a hotel before because I've ordered a glass of wine or beer from plenty of hotels I've stayed at. Needless to say that was the nail in the coffin for us and we won't be returning. The positives were the manager did his best to accomodate us with what he had to work with, he didn't hestiate to try to make us happy but the rest of the staff left something to be desired and could use a crash course in basic customer serice. On our way to the coast our 2 year old got sick in the back of the car. We had headed over 4 hours before check in to go play at the beach. The staff got us right into a room so we could clean up. Was so thankful for the flexibility with check in time.

A wonderful time was had at Shilo. Covered everything we needed, had a heated pool, clean room, friendly staff, the works. Very walk friendly, after checking in we didn't need the car for anything! Aquarium was a 20-25 minute walk across a picturesque bridge (the Rogue Brewery was over there too) , the bayside district with little shops was about 15min […] by streets or 25 by the beach walk. It sort of felt like this was an ugly step-child of the Shilo Inn hotels. We arrived last Thursday evening around 7:45p; I was the only one in the office along with the clerk behind the desk. She looked at me once when I walked in and again when I left, no eye contact, no smile, no pleasantries. The hotel itself needed a some updating - one example […] is the phone in our room was from the 1990's. They advertise Sattelite TV, but the channel selection is very limited. Plenty of sports channels, news channesl, regular channels & Showtime (or was it HBO?). Yes, I go to the beach to walk on it & visity the many shops and sightsee, but at night it would be nice to also have the choice of Travel Channel, HGTV & Foodnetwork. Not all women like to watch sports. There was no DVR so if you wanted to watch a movie you had to pay for it. We stayed for two nights at the Shilo in Newport (on Elizabeth). Our building and room were not well maintained and our room was smelly and dirty. I'm sure the fact that we brought our dog has something to do with the quality of the room provided, but we've stayed with him at other hotels and never had the nasty room issue before. Also, the wi-fi didn't […] work in our room, there was no DVD player, and the in-room movies were $16.00 each. I was extremely impressed. As I arrived late which I had told them I would the front counter person knew my name and had everything ready. He called to another employee to fullfill my request of an additional bed to be brought to my room, and employees communicated to each other so well that one employee stated to anoher he could handle that request […] for the first employee as the second was closer and that was impressive in his day and age where people only want t do "what they have to" for their jobs. Also not to get anyone in trouble but the front desk manager had rooms available to be able to upgrade us for the night which was a surprise and very much appreciated. I don't get to go out alot but I have LOTS of family that travel and use hotels/motels and I would highly recommend your Shilo Inn. The room was very nice and me and my friends had a great evening and slept so good. Your front desk manager was very informative about all the surrounding attractions and restaurant which we did have breakfast at the next morning......Now I have to say if they had some training like the hotel breakfast would have been much better but they did not seem to enjoy or want to work. Did not get the oversized queen room I booked so don't pay the extra $30. They will downgrade you. Instead was put in a different building all together surrounded by the 3am drunk crowd. Very old and dingy place. Feels very cheap. Rooms are large, but poorly vacuumed (I booked 2 rooms, and we were on 3rd floor in "deluxe" rooms). Every corner, along every wall, you can litterly see old trails of baked in dust. I felt horrible having my two year old walk on such carpet. The only good thing was the view, and well mannered front desk personnel. […] To start off, our 2006 Acura RL, scraped hard with the bottom going in the parking garage - Sucks. You can hear what's going on in the next room, and people walking upstairs - very squeaky floors. Poorly sound insulated rooms. Old boxy TVs, super old tiny fridge with a huge frost build up inside, and a tiny, tiny, microwave, along with free, but unusable WiFi, gives you an overall "cheap" experience - wouldn't stay again. Overall "dirty" feel to the whole experience. And we were told we're getting nicer rooms! I wonder what the other rooms looked like!! One last thing, for a family of 5 (with 3 kids) I booked two oceanfront rooms with a connecting door. Instead, we got two adjacent, non-connecting rooms. I think that was the reason we were "upgraded" to the "deluxe" rooms, and it scares me to think what the other rooms looked like. We've stayed at the Shilo Newport 3 times. The first time we were in an "extra-large king suite." It was old and smelled weird. The second time I figured the money might as well stay in my pocket and we got a "standard room." It smelled like an animal or possibly a transient and a view of high tide and adjoining roof. Recently, we had a business obligation […] in Newport and we tried an "extra-large double queen." It was cleaner and newer and didn't smell but those were just minor attributes. The bolster pillows on our bed had some odd staining to them and were promptly deposited on the unmanned housekeeping cart parked in the hall. Also, the edges of the vanity could have been wiped down better, so much in fact, that I ran to Wal Mart to get Clorox wipes and did a once-over of the room just to insure things were sanitized. Oh, and there was a bottle left above the closet space which didn't bother me horribly because I just tossed it but I did have a kid in the room so I suppose it could have been a danger if my kid could reach that high or would be inclined to play with anything that boring looking. Also, the pool in the four floor unit is about 3 feet deep. Which is okay, if you are 3.5 feet tall. Read more

When we reserved a room at Shilo Inn, we specifically said we had a dog and when Hotels.com reservation confirmation came back it included, "This is a pet-friendly room." Surpise when we chekcked in, that this was not true and we were scheduled to be in a non-pet friendly room. Since there were no remaining King size bed rooms we had to use a room with […] Queen beds. Since it was a holiday weekend, we did not have much choice but to accept this room. Then there was a large group of university students upstairs who were "up" half the night. Next the free internet had 1 bar signal about half the time in our room (no connectionj the rest of the time). Since we were in the lower level of the building down over the ridge, our cell phone coverage was not good either. TV had limited number of stations (maybe a couple dozen, or so) Overall we were dissappointed, even though it was a reasonably nice place to stay. Read more
