A Hidden Historic Gem
My mom, 11-year-old daughter, and I greatly enjoyed our one-night stay at the historic Santa Maria Inn. We needed a comfortable and family friendly place to stay while driving from San Diego to the San Francisco Bay Area and the Inn was ideally situated along our route. Our quiet Tower room was immaculate and very spacious, with most everything we needed. Our two Queen beds and fluffy duvets were very comfortable and we loved the Sicilian orange-scented bath products. We only missed having a second luggage rack and more artwork on the walls to enhance the room's decor. In addition, we would have appreciated having staff offer to assist us with our luggage upon arrival (no valet/bellboy). We were also disappointed that the acclaimed Wine and Martini Bar closed at 9:00pm on a Saturday evening, as we arrived late due to heavy traffic and missed enjoying a nightcap there. Overall, the Inn is a marvelous, hidden gem with a fascinating history that should not be missed. So much more interesting than staying in a large chain hotel. We look forward to our next visit so we can enjoy the pool, spa, restaurant (prime rib special!), and wine bar. Mahalo!

Great hotel...lots of history
I came to town to meet my wife for a romantic, kid free getaway since we live in different cities. I had stayed here in 2013 with her and two of her children, got put in one of the older rooms, which was a bit cramped. This time I simply booked it for two double beds. Upon check in, they upgraded me to two queen beds in the tower at no additional cost. Now that room was incredible. Great service. Great room. Plan on coming back in two weeks and staying there again. TIP - Try the Patty's Restaurant across the street for a great breakfast.

Spacious and Clean
Half of our group stayed in a junior sweet in the newer tower section of the hotel. We were surprised to how spacious this room was! Two kings fit nicely and then there was a sitting room with a TV. All of our group wanted this room instead of the room in the other room located in the older side of the inn. The two window seats in the bay windows were lovely!

More like Hotel California than a historic inn!
We were very disappointed by the condition of our room, especially for the price. The hotels.com picture of our room was of one in the newer towers, built in 1984, with nice furnishings and a walk out door to a patio. We ended up with a room in the older section of the hotel, built in 1916, with a small window looking outside. The walls were grimy and in need of a good scrub. It looked like maybe 30 years ago, they painted over rippled wallpaper and hadn't washed the walls since then. The furniture, and sinks were scuffed and worn. The counter tops, fixtures, and mirrors were all made of horribly cheep material. I admit, there was potential for a romantic setting, but the dreary and dingy room was in dire need of tasteful restoration and cleaning. It was so bad that we were embarrassed to have anyone else from our group see the state of our room. Jean Harlow stayed here? I'd say our room was fit more for her pet dog rather than a movie star. Moreover, when I called the night before to inquire about our room, the desk clerk was extremely blunt and rude. She seemed annoyed and made me feel as if I was intruding her evening by calling with a question. This should have warned me that our stay would be unpleasant.

Good for Graduation Weekend
This is an affordable alternative for graduation weekend at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. It's about a half hour drive north to campus. I enjoyed the historical photos and artifacts on display recounting the rich history of the hotel and of all the celebrities who have stayed here.
