When pulling up, the place looked nothing like the picture on Hotels.com., and not in a good way. The lobby left a bit to be desired, but the staff was VERY helpful, the room was great, and although right next to the L, very quiet. Perfect if you're going to Wrigley Field, only 6 blocks away. They serve a continental b'fast as well. I would stay here […] again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Perfect for what we were there for. Clean and comfy! Yes, I would recommend this hotel! Very pleasant and friendly staff!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
My wife and I recently stayed at the City Suites for a week during our apartment hunt/move to Chicago. We chose the City Suites based on price (much cheaper than staying down in the Loop) and location (on El line with dozens of walkable restaurants). We arrived to find the hotel was under renovation but the staff was very accommodating and moved us […] a couple times as the renovations followed us around (as I noted, it was a long stay). The hotel also offers breakfast, which is limited, but satisfied us. The rooms were very comfortable, with the cheapest mini-bar we had ever seen and better TV selections than most hotels I have stayed in. Our room also came equipped with a fridge. Housekeeping was outstanding and very flexible for our schedule. Biggest drawbacks were noise from the train (literally right outside the window) and problems with the heat - they provided a space heater to compensate. Overall, a great stay and will recommend to visitors in the future. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I needed a place close to the Red line and this place was right there. I also needed a place close to late night events. I had that as well. The room was a little small for the price, but in the heart of the city, what do you expect? And the breakfast could be a little better but hey, overall, it was a great stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great night life area"
The biggest draw for me was the surrounding area, a few stores stayed open late and a 24 hour diner was located across the street. The hotel itself had a nice old Chicago character to it, which appealed to me. The street noise was a bit much, especially around bar closing time, since inebriated patrons would be flocking to the L train in droves. Staff […] was great and very helpful and was available at the front desk for 24 hours. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel was convenient for one night stay."
I and one other guest stayed here for one night. The location was excellent for us because it was literally just around the corner from our venue (The Vic Theater) and had lots of dining options just down the road. The condition of the hotel was... O.K. It was undergoing renovation at the time of our visit so we were smelling paint any time we were […] in the room. But because we were only in town for the one night and left early in the morning (we left at 6:30 and breakfast wasn't served until 7am so we missed out on that) we didn't spend much time in the room. The staff was accommodating and allowed us to check in before the 3pm check-in time, they were also helpful when recommending places to eat and directions to get there. The bed was comfortable enough to sleep on, and I didn't feel as though I would catch any flesh eating bacteria staying here. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Run down but clean"
Beds were comfy, but lots of door slamming heard late at night & early in the morning. Hotel was run down - peeling wall paper, worn carpet, tiny, gross elevator. Location was good & parking was convenient. The view out our window was a brick building & fire escape.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Loud, cold and dirty room"
This was hands-down the worst hotel room I have ever stayed in, to the point that I had to leave and book another hotel to get sleep. There was an a/c unit installed in February letting in cold air. The only heater was in the bathroom. There was no closet. The hand towel and bathmat were damp when I arrived. The mirror was dirty. However, I left because […] my room was so loud I couldn't sleep after lying in bed for three hours: pounding overhead, noise from some sort of machine outside the a/c unit window which let in every sound. The room was right across from the elevator and I could hear everyone. Plus, the door let in light even when closed. I checked out three hours later. What a nightmare.Don't stay here or waste your money! They didn't refund a single dime. What a horrible experience. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Good if you don't mind train noise"
Overall our one-night stay was good, mainly because it was located right where we needed to be for a concert we were attending at the Vic. However, getting sleep was impossible as our room was directly next to the L train, Belmont stop. The management did not warn us ahead of time that this was the case, and only when checking out advised "oh you should've […] asked for a room on the other side where you can't hear it". Well, too little too late for that. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"My best hotel experience. Ever."
Definitely geared toward a younger audience who's interested in Chicago night-life. Easy access via CTA: it's located adjacent to the Belmont subway stop. It's in a part of town where most of the cars on the streets are taxi cabs, so getting around is easy. Contrary to what other reviews mentioned, I barely noticed any train noise. My two friends did […] not either. The rooms themselves are phenomenal and the beds were comfortable, with beefy sheets. Perfect place to recover after a night on the town. There were some small touches that added to the experience: bottles of scented hand lotion and heated spots on the bathroom floor. This is the only place that I will stay in Chicago if I visit again. "Good place to stay on Chicago's north side"
We were looking for a place to stay near the Briar Street Theater to see Blue Man Group. City Suites had mixed reviews but it was within easy walking distance of Blue Man so we took a shot. We were very pleased with our stay. This is NOT a new hotel. It's an old brownstone in a neighborhood of old brownstones. It has character, including the room layout. […] Some reviews mentioned noise due to the proximity of the CTA hub, but we never heard a thing all night. We also did not hear the guy next door getting up for his shower in the morning - something I can't say about modern hotels. ComedySportz Theater is practically next door, innumerable eating establishments and shops are within easy walking distance, and Wrigley Field is right in the neighborhood. Yes, they charge for parking, but so does every other hotel in the city. I don't like it, but it's not like City Suites is gouging you in some way that no one else does. The parking is not AT the hotel; it is in a deck about 3/4 of a block away. You can pull up right to the front door of the hotel to unload/load, so parking is not really a big deal, even on a snowy Feb. night. The "4" rating mainly comes from the provided toiletries (shampoo, body wash) which has a menthol smell; I felt like I was bathing in Vapo Rub. If you want a modern box with all the amenities, head to the 'burbs. If you want a nice place to stay in the middle of what Chicago has to offer, City Suites has a lot to offer; just bring your own soap. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
The hotel is very old, which itself is not an issue... architecture, historical significance, etc. But it also means the hotel is very smelly and cramped. The rooms have radiator heat, which is quaint, but it's also impossible to regulate. Our room was about 85 degrees and we alternated opening and closing the window to the 20 degree weather (thank […] god the window opened) all night long. Adding to the window problem is that the Belmont station was next door. Open window + El train = sleepless night. Aside from the room issue, the price was decent for Chicago and the hotel provided an edible continental breakfast. We won't be staying there again, though. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

We didn't have a stay...we arrived at the Hotel only to be informed that a pipe burst near our room and no more rooms were available. We were placed in a hotel 3-4 blocks away and had to walk to our venue that eve which would have only been around the corner from the original Suite. This was a huge disappointment and inconvenience! They tried to charge […] us more money than was the internet price and in the end took off a little of the price and parking fee.At the Willows hotel, a man was in our room we assume was staff and said he was "checking the TV out", he promptly left.I just don't know what to say! If you are looking for an old-fashioned kind of place, this is it. There is nothing outstanding about the hotel, but it served its purpose for the price. The rooms are radiator heated and temp is difficult to control. We kept windows open but then you have to be willing to deal with the noise from the el. There was a lot of people noise from the streets […] throughout the night. The breakfast was very so-so, the staff was ok and the price was also acceptable considering the fact that the room was booked mainly for the sleeping accommodation it provided. "Finally - a wonderful, low priced Hotel in Chicago"
We picked City Suites Hotel because of it's proximity to the Theater Wit and it could not have worked out better. The room was very nice and for those with small children, the sleeper sofa would be a huge advantage. Breakfast was very nice and the ambiance was perfect. The Red Line is right next door but the noise from the train was not a problem at […] all for us - in fact my wife said it was like listening to the waves at the beach (OK, maybe that is going too far, but the noise was not an issue to us as it was for some others in reviews I have seen). Parking was 2 blocks away and unlimited in/out privileges for $22/day. Of course you can park on the street as well. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. We will DEFINITELY return. "Good for out of downtown"
We were away from home for emergency repairs and needed a place close enough to check on the house and get to work so didn't want to be all the way downtown or in a suburb. This was recommended by a friend and I was pleased. The rooms are clean and I found the beds very comfortable. Extra room in the shower, unexpected pleasure. This was winter and […] the heat was great I had no need to turn on the extra space heater (provided in wall if you need more than the radiator gives). I didn't realize at booking there was breakfast. It isn't elaborate but a great grab & go, cereal, danishes, yogurt, etc. Need cocoa at midnight? Just run down to the lobby. You will notice noise from the el so you might request a room facing another direction if you can. If you are looking for spacious and lavish, no. But for this location for the price was great. "Great place to stay!!"
The hotel was cool, great area, lots to see. My room was near the elevator and was a bit noisy but not bad, its really my only complaint and its very minor. This was our second stay at the City Suites, and I was surprised to see that the building is still under renovation. We had a small electrical issue in our room, perhaps do to the work being done. The staff is friendly, the continental breakfast is good, but what really sells us on City Suites is the location: right next to the Belmont stop.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Outstanding hotel stay"
I had to make a last minute booking of a hotel because of a cancelled flight, and found a great deal at City Suites. Given the price I didn't expect much, but everything was of the highest quality. The room was clean, and very unique/interesting in appearance--not your usual sterile hotel room. It was in a really fun neighborhood with great bars/restaurants […] around. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. The coffee was good and available 24 hrs a day (along with coffee and cookies). Plus, there was a great gym around the corner that you get to use for free. I highly, highly recommend it. At the price, it's pretty amazing. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great location but felt a bit sketchy"
I chose this hotel because of its location--it's in the heart of the Lakeview neighborhood / Boys Town. The weather was freezing, and the location paid off. I didn't have to walk more than a mile to get tons of good food and hit some great bars. The room itself was fine. It was quite charming. It's an old building, and the rooms have great character. […] The bathroom was spacious and clean. The hotel itself, though, felt sketchy. The hallways are dingy, and there were often people hanging around outside their rooms. At one point I came out of my room to find a guy sitting in the hallway floor charging his phone. I don't think he was a guest at the hotel. So, stay here for the location and some charm. Just don't expect a 3 star hotel experience. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
When driving up to the hotel I was slightly concerned. The entrance door was not exactly what I would expect for a nice hotel. However, upon entering, my viewpoint changed 180 degrees. Walk down the hallway to a beautifully appointed lobby....cozy and quaint. The front desk people couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating. There is not valet service […] but the instructions were simple to their parking facility. Close by and our luggage was taken to the room while I parked the car. The room was spotless. For just over 100.00 the room had two beds in an adjacent room from the "living area." The sofa was comfy and although the quarters were small; it was great for two people. The beds were extremely comforable...great linens and I snuggled in with great relief after a long day of fun in their great neighborhood. The shower was terrific...a real window was a great surprise for me...I hate hot humid bathrooms after taking a shower and the discreet window slats that can be opened as much or as little as you like made the bathroom "fogless" after my shower. I truly enjoyed my stay here and would recommend it highly to friends who want to stay in a little gem off the beaten path but close enough to get anywhere in Chicago via cab...or feet. "Great place, great staff!"
I'm on my 3rd stay at this hotel and I love it. The location is great for access anywhere on the North Side and you can easily jump on the train into the loop. I haven't stayed on the west side (which faces the trains) but the noise I experienced is to be expected in the city and with such close proximity to the trains. The suites are nice sized and […] the single rooms aren't bad either. The hotel staff has been great, I can't stress this enough, GREAT! The property is in the last phases of an update and it's clean, classy and nicely appointed for the price. My only suggestion to make it a better business hotel would be on-site laundry. "Small, Nice, but Unlucky"
The room is simliar to a hotel I stayed at near Times Square -- small, neat, and at the heart of where I needed to be. It's not new, it's not updated, but it has what you need. Nice, clean room, with a cute little bathroom. Unfortunately we were in a room facing the L train, which didn't cause any issue with my wife and I during our sleep since we're […] used to a little white noise/TV, however, our stay was interrupted by about a half-dozen drunk coeds who were doing something at 3-430 AM in the halls of the hotel. The walls are pretty thin and we were near the elevator so we caught most of their drunken stupor (they called the front desk who came up to their room because they wanted to know where to go to eat). Other than that, the hotel had everything we needed and the staff was accommodating. Would stay again and just cross our fingers we didn't get dominated by drunk dummies again... Hotel is in a great area but next door to elevated rapid transit railroad tracks, so it's noisy, but the noise from the roadway in front of the building is even noisier - yelling, laughing, and screaming all night long from area party goers.
