We got to the hotel after a long drive from Key West around 9:30 PM after over 30 minutes of waiting to get checked-in we were given a smoking room although our reservation was for a non-smoking room. When complained about the room smell, we were told that the entire floor is a smoking floor. Then why were we checked-in on that floor???? After another […] hour of going up and down on the single available elevator for the entire hotel (during their busiest week of the year - Christmas - New Year) we were given what can be classified the worst available room on the floor - next to the elevator, snack machine, ducked in a corner with the day light barely coming through. By midnight I was exhausted and my husband was running with fever and I gave up dealing with the front desk and finding a decent non-smoking room. We wanted to have a hot shower and an aspirin and rest for the night. I am not a picky person and I am very forgiving when I travel, but this was one of the worst and unpleasant experiences - hair all over the room - bed sheets , bathroom; paint peeling off the doors; only 2 face towels, 2 hand towels and 3 bath towels. Next morning people were waiting 15-20 minutes to take the elevator, only one working elevator to the entire full hotel. We used the stairs (very dirty and unclean) for the entire stay. We had worst night in our life with no sorry at all!!! When we were going to our room all the rooms on the way to our room on 10th floor were open, empty and under major renovation ours was last. It felt very wierd & unsafe passing all the construction guys and tools and mess! "Very bad experience"
We showed up to the hotel after booking online early and we thought they we so nice by letting us check in early due to our long trip and we were so ready for a shower an a nap. Once checked in and paying for the valet parking we realized we left an item in the car. Make a note: you are NOT allowed access to your car in te garage. You will have to pay […] valet again to have them bring your car to you at the front to get the item and then pay again to have them park the vehicle back in the garage. Upon enterin the room we noticed it was very dirty and moldy. They had true to update it but only the beds looked the clean. The bathtub was brown from use with huge (what I can only describe as burn spots) spots all over the bottom. We proceeded to unpack and when my husband went to get in the shower only a trickle of water came out and the toilet would not flush. I immediately calle the front desk and they said they were performing routine maintenance on the plumbing in the hotel and it should be going better soon. We decided we could deal with the trickle just to get somewhat if a shower in. Well, when I went to take a trickle shower all of a sudden there was absolutely no water. When I made another call to the front desk the informed me there would e no water until 4 pm (3 hours from that time) and we should be grateful they let us check in early. So my husband decided to go get some bottled water or something for us to drink and when e asked the front desk where he could get some they let him know he could walk three blocks to a concur menace store to get something as they have nothing at the hotel. What???? She said "it is not that far to walk sir." So when my husband comes back upstairs to let me know we needed to go somewhere, he walks in the door and water started pouring through te ceiling. As someone who has also stayed at the ritz in sobe and paid dearly for it I can tell you the riu for the price I paid was a steal... This time traveling with kids the pool and the beach were the biggest draw... Not so good experience the first day but the problem was resolved. We were given a room , ocean view on the 10th floor, were major building improvements were in process. major work on several rooms in such a way that the corridor was half blocked and in the morning the noise started around 8AM. in addition, the smell of paint or other toxic-appearing […] product was very evident. I complained to the front desk personnel and we were change to the seventh floor, away from more work that was going on also on this floor. There was not noise or smell on the new room. One small detail if you park the car with the hotel, the only way to get the car is to go to the front door to request it and wait for the car. Other hotels you call the valet service to bring the car and no waiting on the lobby is necessary. > Be aware of construction, call before booking to make sure you get a room away from that. We stayed at the Riu before and after our Cruise vacation. The first night we stayed there we were upgraded to a balcony room that looked right out to the ocean. Nice and quiet. The second night not so great. They were remodeling some rooms on the 7th floor and we were put right next them and our room looked right out to some major construction. I originally booked my hotel expecting to have a room with 2 double beds in it, when I arrived to my destination, I only had 1 bed in a very small room, which was a very big inconvenience. I contacted customer service, and when going through the trouble of telling my story about the false advertisement, a rep hung up on me. I wouldn't listen to an negative reviews about this place. We stayed here for six nights and found it to be an excellent hotel. I would recommend an ocean view. I'm sure the standard view rooms are fine, but the ocean view definitely added a lot to the room. I can't stress that enough. The room itself was nice. The people at the front desk were extremely nice and the valet service were also a bunch of friendly people despite being pretty busy. Venturing outside the hotel, the pool area is very nice. There are palm trees surrounding it, there's a bar next to the pool. Everything about the set up is great. And when you walk by the pool, you're right on the start of the boardwalk, which is right on the beach and the turquoise water. The beach isn't crowded either near the hotel, which is nice. It is about a 30 minute walk from the hotel to the main strip on Ocean Drive. We did that each of the six nights though. It's not that bad if you don't mind walking. It's not the craziest walk and it's even nice when the sun firs goes down and you get the breeze from the water. Just stayed for 4 nights in late September. No parking lot which was very disappointing, so if you rent a car you will have to valet for $22/day or park at this beach parking lot two blocks away, which you'll have to go to every 3 hours to pay $2 to park for 3 hours due to a maximum amount of time allowed. Although after 6pm is free until the morning. […] Hotel is nice, clean, could use a paint job. More of a couple spot than a younger crowd place. There is much construction going on each hotel on either side which didn't cause too much noise, but lack of people around. The main night spots are located in South Beach (6th to 14th street and Ocean Dr) which is a 10 minute cab ride, however there are several cabs right on the corner next door waiting for people, which was convenient. My stay was wonderful. I only had one problem. I really want to know why the hotel do not have a shuttle bus to pick-up guest from the Airport and take them back when they leave.
