The staff was very friendly and helpful. The ample amounts of free parking was a definite plus. It was a tad far from the downtown Reykjavik area but reachable by walk in 15-20 minutes. We had a very pleasant stay, would stay here again.

I'm not sure whether this is common or unusual, but I was nearly knocked out by the overwhelming aroma of sulfur when showering in the hotel's hot water. When I initially brushed my teeth with cold water, I noticed a slight aroma, but then when I later showered I was forced to make it the shortest and fastest shower I've had in my life to avoid suffocation […] by the fumes. I do realize that the island is volcanic and the blue lagoon and other areas spew the hot gas, but I didn't expect it in the hotel plumbing. The hotel is/was under renovations and could have been more tidy. The Elevator on my side of the building was out of service and I needed to navigate the old/new section to figure out how to get to my room. Overall it's a fine business hotel, but not a place to take your wife for a romantic getaway. Read more

Our room was a wonderful mini suite. Stay was very satisfactory except for a couple of things. The lock on our door kept beeping for no reason and we had to keep inserting the card to make it quit. The room was not serviced one of the days.

Good hotel with a very nice breakfast and free parking. Close to downtown and roads to travel out of town. Better than a stay downtown proper as there really isn't that much happeniong in thew winter to bother being central (Oas mentioned it is a 5 minute drive to the center).

Room on the 4th floor, it was quiet. Water has a sulphur taste, but staff brought up pitchers of purified water. They have a large 4th-floor balcony If you want to go out to try & observe the aurora borealis at night. Let them know you are going bec we got locked outside. Luckily we found another door to get inside. That was the excitement of the night […] - but no sighting. They also have big windows on the 14th floor, and a balcony, but they do not want guests upstairs. It is a conference floor. (If you go upstairs, just do it - don't ask. They will lie to you). My friend also lost his computer tablet, and we asked about it for 4 days. Finally, the day of our departure, someone said that they had a security camera & would look to see what happened. Great hotel, if a bit expensive. This is a full-service hotel, not a basic guesthouse. I rented a bike from the hotel for half a day--great way to see the city. It's the little details that make a hotel stay great and this hotel lacks those little details. It's far from downtown and when asked about getting back to the hotel later in the evening they just said walk or take or take a cab. And cabs are really expensive in reykjavik. The internet in the rooms is not free, if you want free WiFi you have to go down […] to the lobby. The rooms look like they are decorated from ikea, and not appealing at all. The food from the free breakfast was not that good, eggs were like rubber, and the room service was no better. For the price of this hotel you have high standards and they just didn't meet them. Although the hotel was clean and comfortable, I would much rather stay in a charming hotel in Reykjavic rather than this larger more business-like hotel. Fortunately, we were able to find parking for our car when we went into the city to restaurants. I would much prefer a smaller boutique hotel to really feel the character of a place you visit.

The folks at the front desk were very professional, courteous and helpful. Took care of our every need, including setting up our tours, without a hitch. We arrived after an over-night flight, but three hours before check-in. The young lady at the front desk saw the jet lag in our faces and had a room ready within 10 minutes of our arrival. And if a 15-20 minute walk is too strenuous, you should probably be visiting your cardiologist instead of Iceland. Overall this hotel was pretty good. The room was very clean. In particular, the bathroom was spotless. The TV only has 7 channels - only 1 channel is in English: Sky TV from the UK. There is a free breakfast every morning....the same variety of foods are offered each morning: eggs, bacon, bread, coffee, juice, cereal, etc. There is free Wi-Fi in the […] lobby area and there are plenty of couches and chairs for you to sit on while you browse the web. There is also a computer room with 3 computers and a printer. I did not have a room in the new tower but my room was still nice and I was lucky to have a room with a window facing outside. Other reviews mentioned that their rooms were noisy b/c their windows faced the lobby/reception area. In terms of location, this is a nice hotel if you're looking to get a good night's sleep. I read many reviews of hotels located downtown and people complained of noise from the bars/clubs. This hotel is not in downtown Rekyjavik and was therefore, more quiet. The downfall of this is that you have to take a taxi anytime you want to go to downtown Reykjavik. The hotel has a free taxi that goes downtown 3 times a day: in the morning, lunchtime, and 5:30 PM. If you will need to get from downtown Reykjavik at any other time, you will have to pay almost $20. Overall, this was a great hotel. Lovely hotel on the outskirts of the downtown area. My only issue would be that I didn't quite realize how far away from downtown it was until my travel agent booked it. However, I also didn't realize how easy it is to get around and that it is within walking distance if you like to walk and have good weather. It is located not far from the main road […] into Reykjavik, and there are sidewalks everywhere so walking is not hazardous. The sea walk on the outside of the city is an easy walk and gets you to the road where the hotel is located. It was a convenient location to be picked up from to go on excursions, but is NOT located in downtown and erquires a short (generally $10-20) cab ride to get downtown for dinner, etc.

The hotel is located about 2 miles fron downtown Reykjavik. The hotel staff were not at all helpful, when asked about ways to get to downtown ,buses etc. The conceirge servives is non exixtenet. The Grand Hotel is a contemporary high-rise hotel with an enormous and very attractive atrium. It is a glassed in area with numerous and striking red leather upholstered couches and chairs, in addition to a cafe/bar in the lobby. Our room was large by European hotel standards; more like the size and layout of a Holiday Inn, which it apparently was […] in the past. The furniture and flooring were made of blond wood. All furniture...including the bed...was comfortable and attractive. The bathroom was adequate, but cramped: not as thoughtfully and attractively designed as the room itself. The hotel desk staff we had contact with during our four-day stay were all very attentive, friendly and helpful. All spoke very good English. Breakfast, included in the room reservation, was served in a large, contemporary-design dining room with comfortable, upholstered chairs. There were several large and striking paintings of Icelandic horses. The buffet breakfast was enormous and varied. Service staff were attentive; not letting used plates pile up on the table. The only problem with the Grand Hotel is its location, in a nondescript suburb of apartments and office buildings, too far from the center of Reykjavik to be walkable and requiring either an expensive taxi or a two-bus connection. The area around the hotel was not one that encouraged strolling. For reasons of location alone, I would prefer to stay at a hotel in the historic center of Reykjavik. Read more

My wife and I stayed at the Grand Hotel Reykjavik for 4 nights (17th - 20th May 2013) to celebrate her Birthday. We noted a few mixed reviews on here and TA before booking, but I'm pleased to say that our experience was almost totally positive. Service in particular was excellent, polite and efficient without being obtrusive. Reception staff spoke perfect […] English and were more than happy to assist with day trip bookings etc. Based on other reviews, we requested a Tower room on a high floor and were given a room on the 13th floor with views to both land and sea all of which were simply stunning. Beds are medium firm and comfortable, showers work well with the option of a hand held head or overhead rain shower (a lever switches between the two). Only negatives we could find were the room has no climate control (although the top windows opened electronically), the TV channels cut out repeatedly during our stay and the minibar fridge was basically inoperative, with hotel maintenance advising 'it is not broken, they are all like it'... In short, don't bother, it was colder on the window sill. Overall, The Grand is a great hotel with great staff. Read more

This is a great hotel with very helpful and friendly staff. The room was immaculate, very comfortable and warm, spacious and quiet, with a very good bathroom. The room mini-bar was expensive but the bar prices (in particular during the two daily happy hours) reasonable as were bar food prices. The temporary breakfast room was ok (restaurant under renovation) […] but a bit gloomy - however, the buffet breakfast is excellent, with lots of fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurts, delicious breads, cheeses and meats and also hot food (English traditional). This kept us going for most of the day! Location within walking distance of the huge recreational area (including geothermally heated outdoor swimming pool and hot pools) is ok. Not a very attractive walk into town centre, so we soon started taking one of the regular buses which stop within a short walking distance on the main road.
