Considering many of the surrounding Santa Monica hotels are very expensive, Marina del Rey was a more affordable option. The hotel staff was very friendly, but the hotel is rather dated. The rooms could definitely use some ambiance. There were no lounge chairs and not much decor. The window in our room was falling apart. The beds were clean and comfortable, and the view of the marina was wonderful. My biggest complaint was the smell in the morning. We were suddenly overwhelmed with an awful smell coming into the room. It smelled like rotten eggs and was coming from the hallway. We never found out what it was. If you are looking for a luxury hotel keep searching. If you want a low price place to stay near Santa Monica this is a great option!

While the physical building is showing signs of its age, MRDH is a great place to "get away" while in LA. The important stuff works - pool, ice maker, sea breeze or a/c - add in great views and quiet location. Close to Venice, Santa Monica if you want action. 10 mins to airport. Not for every one, but I like it - I've been visiting since the mid-80s (when it was in prime). Actually costs less now in actual dollars.

Although the Hotel is old and in need of renovation, this remains one of my select hotels when staying in the Marina del rey area. After receiving our room keys I found that we did not have a room with a view of the marina. I reverfied what I had reserved on Hotels.com, I approached the front desk and was told that all rooms booked through Hotels.com are standard rooms (regardless of Hotels.com listings) with a parkinglot view only. Even with this information I was offered an upgrade to a marina view room at no additional charge. Ontop of this I was provided a $50 dollar gift card for any inconvience this had caused. If you want the best rooms/view, ask for the West Wing. These rooms seem to be more up to date, larger, and provide a better view of the harbor. The staff continues to be very courteous and are always there if you need anything.

I spilled a drop of lotion on the floor and when I wiped it up, the rag I was using was black, like the floor had not been scrubbed in awhile. To turn on the light where the toilet area is, it also turned on the light in the sink area closer to the bedroom, so if you had to go in the night and turn on the light you woke up the others in the room sleeping. We finally got a flashlight to use in the toilet area. Had to ask for a refrigerator, none provided. The bed was very comfortable, the room was roomy, but on the tables where there had been chips or rings, they just painted them over in black where the damage showed through. They encouraged open windows but there was no screen, a person could easily fall out. Loved the view, the people were very nice and helpful.

In our opinion this hotel offered excellent value for money and was only a short cab ride to anywhere of interest. 10 to 15 dollars or so. The one and only critisism i would have would be the really old tv with not perfect reception. But that didnt bother me and i thoroughly enjoyed my stay there. Parking was free. At other hotels i stayed in while in LA was $33 per night plus tax in one and $40 plus tax and tip at the other. Also just remembered. Drinks by the pool include tax and tip. So unlike anything else in the states. when you get your bar bill you dont have to add a tip. The beds here were huge. Californian king. bout 8 feet wide and long. What more can i say. if this hotel is in the ball park of your budget you will we delighted.

Also, upon entering the hotel you are greeted by courteous staff...However, once we checked-in things went downhill. The room appeared outdated and dirty. There were ants in the bathroom, the air conditioner in the room didn't really work and we had to keep sliders open (without screens) for fresh air. The pool heater was broken right up to our last two days so the water was too cold to swim in. It's hit or miss when booking a hotel on the internet...We missed.

I loved this hotel and was really pleased with my choice. Very friendly, scrumptious cookies on arrival, smiling staff, balcony with great view, fresh air, quiet, cooked breakfast buffet included, nearby resturants, close to Venice beach, handy for Hollywood etc. It felt safe and secluded. Fussy (or discerning) guests would moan that room decor is dated and a bit worn out, it is well due for a refurbishment planned soon, but for me the other plusses completely out-weighed this. I thought it was very good value for money. (Make sure they are not refurbishing it when you plan to stay!)

I live here in LA and checked in to have a quick escape and was very disappointed. The price was too high for the style and service. It is very old and outdated and have few amenities. The bar is sad but Carlos was nice. The morning breakfast service was awful as was the buffet. Burned bacon, dry muffins and wet eggs. The bed was ok but the room was totally dated. Bathroom shower door was stuck, no control on the temp of the water or the room, there is a loveseat that is stained and grossly dated, it smelled moldy and looked it too. There was, however a great view from the balcony. Everything sort of half worked in the hotel. The worst was some maintenance or something going on above my room at 7 a.m. which woke me. The floor and walls are paper thin so could hear every step, voice, movement above me. This went on for over an hour until there was a birthday party and singing in that room at 8 a.m.!! I had to get up and call the front desk to get it to stop until a reasonable hour. It sucked. You must take the unpleasant stuff for the rate and being on the marina. Great view but everything else was terrible. Not worth it.
