The room is like home, with a central living area and kitchen/dining attached with either one or two adjacent rooms and baths. We favor the two bedroom (though it can be pricey, especially on special event days at USC) because the living area is larger, given the different arrangement with the kitchen and utility rooms. The 2 BR also has a desk in the living area where the 1BR does not. Cannot beat the location in regard to USC. We had favored the Inn at USC which I still like a lot, but the 2 BR here is bigger and I like it better, even though it's not right on campus like the Inn.

There was urine on the toilet base, and the refridgerator was not clean; there was spilled drink inside and old ketshup packages. The room was not vacummed or dusted during my 5 day stay; Chips (Cheetos) remained in the main doorway. The drapes and furniture were also visibly dirty/soiled and looked like they had not been washed in ages. It was a very unpleasant experience and I had to spray everyting with Lysol, however, they did us refund 2 days of our stay.

We have stayed here 3 times and I was a little hesitant the first time after having read some negative reviews. It is true that the furniture shows wear, the facility needs updating, and this time the lobby area did have a pet odor. Housekeeping could be improved. However, our beds have always been extremely clean and comfortable, bathrooms and kitchens have been clean, our suite was odor-free and the staff is very helpful and friendly. The size of the 2 b.r. suite, (having 2 bathrooms and a kitchen and a l.r., balcony, etc.) the breakfast, the price, and the proximity to U.S.C are our main reasons for staying here. We know what to expect, do not consider it a luxury hotel, (although the potential exists,) and it meets our needs.

We have stayed at The Whitney Hotel twice each year for 3-5 days during the last 6 years. In 2006 and 2007 there was a notable decline in the condition of the elevators, the upkeep of the corridors and rooms, the functioning of the appliances within the one and two bedroom suites, and the operation of the front desk and the service personnel. We are pleased that the management has initiated renovation of the hotel and has hired more responsive staff. For example, during our most recent visit (December 19-December 25) the interior of both elevators was renovated; the elevators themselves were replaced earlier in 2008. Now they both look good and function well. Our two bedroom unit on the fifth floor was newly painted just before we arrived; some mirrors were rehung but no paintings were present. The washer, dryer, refrigerator, etc functioned properly as did the internet service. On the evening of December 20 we were kept awake until 2 am by people partying on one or more balconies on the 7th floor. One of them apparently became sick on the elevator, and some of the remains of that incident were still visible at 10 am on Sunday morning. We were awakened at 6 am on Christmas morning by the fire alarm and had made it down three flights of stairs before the alarm stopped. No explanation was given for the alarm. This hotel is gradually improving its facilities and service. We hope that the rate of renovation of the hotel is maintained, if not increased.

We stayed at the Whitney Hotel while attending my brother's graduation from Army boot camp at nearby Fort Jackson. The suite was absolutely enormous, with two large bedrooms, two full baths, a full kitchen (complete with pots & pans, silverware, and dishes), a nice balcony, a good sized living room, and a WASHER AND DRYER. Breakfast was very nice, with fresh scrambled eggs and bacon or sausage, plus fresh fruit, and the usual suspects: cereal, bagels, etc. The surrounding area was very nice, with several little stores and restaurants right across the street. Just a 5 minute drive to the downtown area. We're from Boston and Columbia is a very driveable city. The front desk always had bottles of water available for the taking, and they keep fresh coffee and tea ready at all hours in the breakfast room. Staff was very polite and bent over backwards to assist with directions. Add to all of this the free limo service from the airport and this hotel went WAY beyond our expectations and was an excellent value for the price. Highly, highly recommended!

One review I read said that the furniture was worn but I didn't see anything different than I would notice in another hotel room and I floor were in good condition. Another review I read said that it was a shady location. That is so not true. It is in a historic part of town and about 5-6 blocks away from 5-points. Highly desirable area to live in. The bed was so comfortable and the 2 bedroom room was so convenient since I was traveling with two small children.
