A short guide to Magnificent Mile - River North

Magnificent Mile, a part of Michigan Avenue from the Chicago River to Oak Street, appeals to tourists because of its flashy department stores and fancy restaurants. Several of the Windy City’s architectural wonders are here, including the John Hancock Center and the Old Chicago Water Tower. Just north of the Chicago River, River North is home to the city’s shopping, design, and gallery districts.

Tremont Hotel is in a great location - just by the Hancock Tower and by all the shops, with great links to public transport. No breakfast included and quite pricey for America. Lift was out of order for the whole weekend, so had to use the service lift. Bedroom was large and comfortable and great views

The Tremont was not a dream spot, but a very convenient location for seeing the rest of chicago. The staff were either great and really helpful, or, well, not. But overall no complaints. room: cleaned everyday, we were upgraded to King due to the length of our stay, so not sure about the Queen rooms. Perfectly fine, no frills. There's no room service, so you have to go down to Mike Ditka's restaurant/bar to order food, which, if you're not too precious about, is fine. Did i mention the location? Its slap bang next to the Hancock Observatory, which has easy access to its 94th/95th floor restaurant & bar. 10 mins from Navy Pier & the beach, stacks of restaurants, clubs, bars. Overall, definitely worth it for the location compared to many other places.

We chose the Tremont because it had a low price. When we checked in the staff was friendly and polite. Our room was clean and had an excellent view of the Hancock Center. The only complaint, if you want to call it that, was the hotel did show its age but not that bad. We will be staying here again on our return weekend visit.

My husband and I traveled to Chicago for an extended holiday weekend and to do some downtown Chicago holiday shopping. The location was great...just a few steps from N. Michigan Ave. and all the stores. There were plenty of resturants within walking distance. We made reservations to Ruth's Chris before leaving home, and took a taxi. The room was clean, but small and access to the closet was bit awkward. The TV was very old as the color was mostly pale pink and green. However, since we really only showered, changed clothes and slept there, we did not complain.

The Tremont is located walking distance from Michigan Ave. and the Loyola Chicago campus. It is also within 3 miles of Soldier Field (Go Bears!) and roughly 2 miles from the bean all relatively short distances by car or metro. The staff is helpful and cheery. The lobby boasts a piano that the guest if so inclined may play at their hearts content. There is room service from "Ditkas" a well know eatery. The free wifi came in handy. There is also an ironing board and iron, both in great shape for those last minute touch ups before the meeting. The toiletries soap, shampoo are exceptional. I normally use $35.00 shampoos, I know quality toiletries. The bathroom was clean and neat. The Queen sized bed had the usual linens, bedspread, four regular and one full length pillow. The bedspread was soiled and the full length pillow smelled like a boys locker room. These items I placed far from the sleeping area. Other then that my stay was uneventful and pleasant.

great location. very old european in feeling. if you are looking for new, comtemporary do not come here. relaxed, with reminders of "the Day". really loved the atmosphere. quiet in a busy city and the restaurant was very good.... but sorry, "deanna " at the front desk definitely needs an attitude adjustment. i have stayed at the whitehall for years and this was recommended. the bottom line, she just was not pleasant or welcoming either of the two days i was there.i would definitely return but stay clear if her if possible. the rest of the staff was fabulous!!!!

Hotels.com brought us to a great place for an even greater price. Not a better located hotel in Chicago. A little old, but only adds to the character. Excellent service, always cheerfully offered. Good, free wi-fi. We also liked that it is a completely smoke-free facility, a point we had missed reading in the hotel details. Yes, the elevator is a little slow and the mattress was a little too hard, but all other amenities were way better than expected. Definitely recommend the $5 continental breakfast, basic in some ways but still very good, elegantly served, and convenient in every way. May never get the same price again but this will be the first place we check the next time we're in Chicago. One more thing, we had CTA passes and never used taxis once. The Tremont is only a half block from key bus lines and a very short stroll to the Red Line Chicago Ave. Station.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Tremont hotel. The room was average size and very clean. The bathroom was small but clean. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and also very helpful. The day before we were to leave I went to the front desk to do our online web check in, I was a half hour too early to do it(had to be 24 hrs or less before the flight). The agent at the desk said to leave the information with her and she would do it for us,so we wouldn't have to wait or come back. We really appreciated that as we were on our way out to dinner. She had it all done and ready for us when we returned. We also loved the location of the hotel, just one block over from Michigan Ave, "the magnificent mile". We would definitely stay again!

The staff is super friendly and helpful should you need recommendations, directions, etc. And the price is definitely hard to pass up! An all around GREAT value, I will return the next time we are in the city and highly recommend it to those looking for convenience, comfort, cleanliness, and affordability!

Surroundings were really safe and convinient. I walked around 11:00PM, but there were also business men. In addition, there were lots of restaurants near. I think they are good because every day(I had been in chicago for 5 days) it was crowded. Last, it is easy to access to subway. I recommend the tremont to you.

As one reviewer noted, the smell of cooking from the restaurant downstairs is very strong. Coupled with the fact that I had difficulty with the ac unit until I found that adjusting the temperature alone wasn't enough - also needed the fan set to a minimum speed to work. That cleared out the smell. Other than that, clean, great room for the money because of the excellent location.

The hotel needs a major renovation- the room- and public areas look tired and worn. For the price, it is still a good value. Our room was right next to the elevator... it was noisy at night when guests were going to their room late... I would request a room NOT next to the elevator next time

When I say we weren't happy with the service, it's because there was none. The towels were not replaced, nor were bath toiletries. If clean towels or extra soap/shampoo are desired one must go down to the lobby and pick them up at the front desk. Same with ice, there are no ice machines on individual floors. The bedspreads were of the fabric that is not machine washable, so that really placed cleanliness in question. This hotel is solely counting on its location to fill the rooms. We will never return. Suggestion if anyone does decide to stay at the Tremont, one block up Chestnut is a parking garage where you can self park for less than half of what the Tremont charges.

This is a great older (traditional) hotel in an exceptional location. The rooms are somewhat sparse, not luxury if one is looking for that. The hotel has a classic elegance without the frills and phoniness the chains offer. One feels like they are in old Chicago private club. They also offer free wireless internet in room. The only negative is the continental breakfast offered for $ 5 at Ditka's restaurant next door. The breakfast is one step below a Motel 6 (which has none). They ought to discontinue it, or charge more and make it decent.
