If you are visiting a relative at Carlton College as I was or wanting to see the site of the James brothers great Northfield raid, this is the place to stay. It is not a five star hotel by any means, but it was much more than I expected. The rooms are basic, but with the usual amenities - shampoo, hair dryer, etc. The surprises were amenities not seen […] in many five star hotels. Local calls and wifi access were free; the longest list of TV channesl, including HBO, I have ever seen - all free; an extensive free breakfast- a variety of cereals, french toast, grits, hash browns, scrambled eggs and fresh waffles, as well as the usual toast, bagels, muffins and donuts. a hotel under renovation should be closed. no one wants to stay in a construction area. our room had been completed but the woodwork was dusty and the floor looked like it hadn't been really vacuumed. 2 doors down the hall the hallway was covered in cardboard construction covering. we had hoped to check in for a nap as we were up at 3am for our flight. […] the breakfast buffet area was being retiled and had the smell of glue and you were sitting in area's of unfinished floor. the staff was pleasant but i found it offensive to be paying for a construction site room. The hotel has several marks in the hallway, looks shoddy. The bathrooms are a bit dated and the tile looked rough. The breakfast was below standard for Country Inn - very few choices, no yogurt or skim milk. Eggs were dry and tasteless and the ham didn't smell right. The room was OK. Beds comfortable. Everyone was great and the facility clean, attractive. Only problem was that our room was the closest to the railroad tracks... maybe 60 or 70' away. I heard two trains each night but they weren't long or disturbing... my wife says there were four the first night but I didn't hear all of them... and I'm not a real heavy sleeper.

The people were very nice, but this was the most rudimentary of hotels. Not even two nightstands with a king bedded room. However it was clean and close to our daughter's college. But we decided to drive 6 hours at night rather than stay another evening. Purely a place to sleep.

I booked a room for our family for a few days prior to our daughter's first day of college. We had some travel problems and had to communicate with the front desk via phone several times and found them to be professional and friendly. Yes, it's on a highway and train tracks behind the hotel, but found it to be clean and very convenient. I must say if you don't like the sound of trains close by(we do) you should ask for a room in the front. We didn't use the pool but saw people swimming daily. I had the eggs at breakfast and I have to say they were pretty bad. Sadly, I had to toss them out. The coffee, although not good, was not any worse than that served at restaurants around town. The entire staff were friendly and attentive. We will return to Northfield within the year and plan to stay here again. Read more

My husband & I had driven 700 miles, and it was just after 12 AM when we arrived in Northfield, MN, from North Carolina to attend his mothers 90th Birthday. We were so tired. Everything was so surreal. When we moved our things in, the room was very lovely. The two queen-size beds were plump with beautiful, white sheets covered by a deep red bedspread […] on a red carpet. All the towels were clean. The bathroom shower curtain was pulled back giving an airy invitation to shower before bed. The soap was a milled soap (all other hotels we stayed in were just ordinary). The continental breakfast had many choices. The suites are even more roomy and luxurious. There was an indoor pool, but we didn't have time to try it out. When we asked if we could use the breakfast room as a prep area and to hang out together the staff was more than willing to let us do so. Hotel was mostly clean, grout was in need of cleaning. Previous guest in our room decided not to leave and all rooms in town were full. Housekeeper came in and prepped the room for us after a short delay, the room was ready for us and the manager made it well worth the wait.

We felt fortunate to have gotten a room on a very busy weekend in Northfield. We had a room with a king bed which was comfortable. Unfortunately, there was a nightstand and reading light only on one side of the bed. Very strange! When I mentioned it at checkout, our very young desk attendant didn't even offer so much as a "I'm sorry" in response. I […] got the impression that the room should have had one and ours was missing. The hotel rooms have been nicely updated since my last visit - nice mattress pads, updated decor, fridge in room. Breakfast was pretty dreary - the only fresh fruit was a bowl of green apples, the milk dispenser was broken, and the potatoes and eggs were dried out and tasteless. However the waffles made in the waffle iron were good.

We stayed here while visiting a Carleton College. While not especially new, this hotel is perfectly nice, and restaurants and a drugstore are close by. A predictable continental breakfast was included in the price. Friendly staff, very pleasant room, and very comfortable beds.

There was some type of party in the pool area on the Sunday evening of our stay with maybe 35-40 kids in the pool. (May have been non-guests) Went to use the pool on Monday morning and the pool water was disscusting, dirty and cloudy. I would not go in. The hot tube was fine... But other than that, the hotel was very comfortable and quiet.

We booked on expedia but had trouble checking in and then the key cards weren't activated so we had to go up and down the stairs again to get that sorted out. When we were able to access our room, we opened the door and found the room was not ready for us. The bed was taken apart and we had to go get another room assignment. Hallways and common areas […] needed vacuuming, there was alot of little particles all over the hall way. We found our room very easy to access from the downtown area where we went to a wedding, reception and dance. The staff was very courteous and helpful, sometimes going out of their way to make us feel comfortable and enjoy our stay. The only complaint I would have is that the toilet was running, then flushing by itself - keeping us awake through the […] night....small maintenance problem which happens with all bathrooms. Otherwise, we felt comfy cozy...the bed was soft, yet supported our backs, the table was perfect for two to work on laptops...and we thoroughly enjoyed how easy it was to access the wireless connection and how strong it was. The breakfasts were awesome. We also enjoyed that we could sit on a veranda at a nice outside table with plenty of chairs for several to sit at with out coffee and chat. I have no complaints. The room was clean and comfortable. Hot tub and pool area was nice. The only issue we had was a Luke warm shower on a very busy Monday morning, but there was no problem the following morning.
