"Outstanding Location, Facility, People"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Jul 20, 2012
I could not have been happier with my choice of a place to stay, it was perfectly located, very easy to find, and the owners could not have been more helpful with great advice for some things to see while in the area. I will go back, absolutely, if the opportunity arises to travel into the area again. The breakfast was one of the best I had this trip, extra stars for that.
"Friendly and convenient to downtown Carlisle"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Jun 15, 2012
East View was a gem. It is a comfortable and pretty place to stay when visiting Hadrian Wall country. It is convenient to the AD 122 bus to places on the Wall. Julie, our hostess, welcomed us and we felt at home for our stay. The breakfasts will long be a happy memory. We were "spoiled for choice" as our Engish friends say. I would highly recommend East View.
"A lovely spot in the country"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Jun 13, 2012
thiscountry this is probably the nicest B&B we have visited in England. The room was very comfortable and beautifully decorated. breakfast was individualized and delicious. I wanted to stay longer. It is not convenient to the train station but there is a taxi service at the station.
"Excellent place to stay in a beautiful location"Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Jun 4, 2012
The owners have done an amazing job making your stay a pleasant one. The room was modern and well equipped, and very clean. The location is quiet and stunningly beautiful. The family that run this place are really friendly and helpful. I highly recommend staying here.

"Hotel of yesteryear"
This was just a last minute stop off to avoid the travel disasters of Thursday night. Itnwas cheap for bed and breakfast and close to the station, so on that basis it fit the bill. The hotel itself has seen better days, very run down and shabby, but my bed was clean and comfortable. The false fire alarm at 6am and the noise from the corridor all night […] was not particularly conducive to a great sleep; but the breakfast was good and the staff polite and friendly. Stayed here 4 times already nothing fancy but comfortable and clean, great base for lake district and exploring. Plenty of choice with pubs and restaurants in the town area and shopping too. Leisure facilities are bonus too great to unwind in the steam room after a day out. Bar meals available in hotel if you don't want anything fancy. Enjoyed it again […] and will be back. "Very poor"
CAR PARK VERY POTHOLED, INSIDE RUN DOWN, I ASKED FOR A COFFEE AND WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL EVERY ONE ELSE HAD BEEN SERVED. NOT AT ALL THE STANDARD I EXPECT FROM SWALLOW HOTELS. WOULD I STAY AGAIN. NOT A CHANCE.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Well situated just off M6"
Hotel is "falling apart". Staff are doing good job but hotel urgently needs maintenance. More black tape than carpet, no need for alarm clock as water system will wake up entire hotel as soon as some-one starts to use it.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"tired hotel"
The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room had stains on the carpets, the windows did not close properly and so the sound of the nearby train line and noise and smell of the outside kitchen air conditioning stopped any chance of a full nights sleep. The gym was in need of maintenance to put it politely. If I had been visiting as a break instead […] of with work I would not have stayed. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Carlisw Hotel"
Our stay was comfortable, however, we agree with previous reviews about the hotel needing a little bit of updating where the decor is concerned. The reception staff are very friendly and helped us tremendously with any needs. One gentleman member of staff at breakfast really made us welcome and uplifted the whole atmosphere. however, this was majorly […] let down the next day when he was absent and the staff on duty were very miserable. Overall the hotel was very clean and was enjoyable to stay at. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great hilltop location"
The hotel decor looks a bit tired, especially the carpet, but everything else more than made up for it: especially the friendly staff who, at every occasion, was very helpful and competent. The hilltop location meant the sun shone into the hotel restaurant and lounge till late making it look really welcoming. We arrived just before the restaurant closed […] but were still offered the full range. The food was delicious, well presented, at reasonable prices. We had 2 dogs in the car and were able to park against a wall to keep it in the shade in the morning. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

the hotel was easy to find situated in the prominant place that it is, we received a warm welcome and the room was easily located, the staff were very helpful. however, i thought the hotel looked and felt rather tired, nothing a fresh lick of paint and some bright furnishings would put right. this would surely compliment the warmth and helpfulness of […] the staff, . we enjoyed our stay, and would reccomend it . "nO wIFI"
The hotel states Wifi, it was not working. The room s bathroom jad 1 small bar of soap and a very small bath oil, I thought it was a joke pack!! The resturant menu had 3 items on it and they said they were full that night when the large room was empty at the time of asking. Breakfast was OK if you likey very chewy bacon. "Swallow Hilltop Newcastle"
Nice friendly, pleasent place to stay, comfortable bed, clean tidy rooms, good value for money including breakfast. Only downside a good 15-20 minute walk away from the train station through a bit of a rough area. Taxi into town around £5 so not completely unreasonable. Overall would consider staying again gym and pool facilites v handy..Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"you get what you pay for"
Have a sense of humour when you come to this place. I wasn't expecting luxury and I didn't get it which, at the price you pay, is fine. The room was clean and bedding and towels were fine. The hotel scrimp a bit on the toiletries so it was lucky we'd brought most of our own. The shower was a joke - it was never any more than a dribble and it didn't […] heat up at all. Breakfast - well, it's a good thing I was in a good mood that morning. The service was absolutely shocking. Not a smile in sight. The room next to the breakfast room was full of people waiting to be seated but no word was given of how long we'd all have to wait and coffee and tea were only provided after we'd been there for 20 minutes (others had been there much longer). The food was fine for the price but if you're fussy about the quality of your food in any way you should avoid the breakfast at all costs. Oily, lukewarm, low quality. Was ignored several times as I tried to ask for tea - the waitresses "couldn't hear me" but the people at the surrounding tables could and we all had a good laugh at how "Fawlty Towers" the experience was. If it was any more expensive I wouldn't go back but for the price - half of what anywhere else was asking - I guess you can't really complain. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Swallow Hotel 'paradise for sight seeing'"
Cheep cheerful place to stay if all your doing is sight seeing in Cumbria! Smack bang in the middle of it all... Lake District - Hadrians wall - Scotland & Yorkshire Dales all covered in our four day escape! Service was great and friendly... Always coffee and Tea in the room when we got back... Cosy bed and eat as much as you like buffet breakfast... […] Complete with 60's music whilst you eat... Simply perfect... It had its faults, if your a fussy person! Interesting noises from the plumbing and Carpets looking worse for wear... We will definately use the Swallow again :) Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great value hotel, need to change the heating"
Great value hotel, a little walk into carlisle (although not on the nice side of town), but really good facilities (including free gym and pool), friendly staff and good breakfast. Only issue was the hotel was always ridiculously warm. They need to fix the heating, it's not possible to turn off one room. We complained but they said they could not do […] anything. Made the stay a lot worse than it could otherwise have been. If you like your room really warm, it'd be great! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Second stay here and as previously had a good time. Hotel is in dire need of an update but on the whole it was clean, most of the staff were friendly and the pool was a bonus for us with 3 children to amuse on a wet Saturday afternoon. Would stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Swallow Hotel, Carlisle, in terminal decline"
I booked 2 rooms at the Swallow Hotel which we used as a stop over on the way to Scotland. It was fairly easy to find, but apart from that this hotel has little to recommend it. It is a typical 1960/70s flat roofed, long, low, brick and concrete hotel. No problem with that, but sadly it looks as if very little has been done to maintain the structure […] since it was built. The decor is very 80s, carpets worn, patched with duck tape and overall very dingy. Both bedrooms were similarly dated and the beds not very comfortable. My son's bathroom ceiling was covered in mould, while the bath sealant in our room also seemed to be supporting a rich, black ecosystem. Both bathrooms were very grubby. The towels were grey and small. The temperature control for the shower in our bathroom was broken. I think that providing a toilet roll that was almost completely finished is rather shabby to say the least. I have never seen such a small bar of soap or shampoo bottle. By the end of the stay we all felt rather grubby also. As another reviewer has commented, this hotel is in the hands of receivers and it really shows. One the plus side, the staff were friendly, if rather poorly trained and everything was very slapdash. The fitness room was actually superior to those in many much better hotels. We did not eat dinner in the hotel, but did have breakfast. I found it perfectly fine, but my wife was really put off by the look of the restaurant, again very run down. It didn't help that the person in charge of the room was wearing a jacket that was 2 sizes too big for him and covered in stains. I always read reviews of hotels with a sceptical eye and tend to give the benefit of the doubt to the hotel when I see vastly contrasting opinions. In this case, the naysayers are right. If you want a cheap stay with a decent breakfast, then this hotel is just about OK. Otherwise, avoid. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
