"Average hotel in great area"
We had an average stay for one night at this hotel. The staff was friendly and the room was sufficient. (It reminds me of a Days Inn with some cosmetic upgrades.) The best part was the location- walking distance to many restaurants and bars! It was fine for one night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great idea - Need to see it through"
This hotel is a great concept in an awesome location. The only think lacking is the follow through. The fit and finish of the hotel has yet to be upgraded from the previous iteration of the property. The room themes are great and it's so close to being a "great stay."Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not a good experience"
I stayed here once before the hotel was remodeled and it wasn't as bad. But this time was quite different though. I stayed in one of the business kings on the first floor which ended up being right near the kitchen and maids closet (room 115). First off, the room felt really humid and uncomfortable. Sheets and pillows seemed old and cheap. It was a […] very large room, but the bed was stuffed in the corner and there was a random elliptical exercise machine in the room. Then around 5-6am, it sounded like someone dropped a bunch of plates/bowls right outside the door and shattered them. Then a half hour later they were vacuuming right outside the door (or they just have incredibly thin walls). Then between 7-7:30 a kitchen alarm or microwave kept going off. The rest of the hotel might not be as bad, but I'll never stay on the first floor again. The rate was reasonable and the location was nice. But the parking lot next to the hotel fills up quickly so you might end up parking in the back lot. One good thing is the happy hour from 5-7 which includes two free drinks (domestic beer). Convenient and remarkably cheap place within interesting area of Kansas City. Followed some reviewers' impressions and was not disappointed. Only stayed one night but would not hesitate to come back. Friendly staff. Rooms ok except INSANE FREEZING TEMPERATURE from airconditioner when we arrived. Basic breakfast buffet included. Certainly excellent return […] on the little money. enjoyed the hotel and westport, would stay againGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The front desk ppl were very rude. We paid for a king and r bed was a queen, when we asked about it they said that was their king. Comp breakfast, wifi and printing for tickets and shuttle within 5 miles was nice.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The website for the hotel is deceiving. Rooms are very outdated, smelled musty, and the bed was very old . This is the first time I have taken the time to do a review. The hotel was nothing what I expected.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
We thoroughly enjoyed our staff and room. Great location for visiting Westport and Plaza areas of KC.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Excellent Proximity to Westport"
Stayed two nights at 816 and it exceeded expectations. Staff was friendly and breakfast adequate. The room was an interesting baseball theme, which was unique if nothing else, and we could tell it was recently built/remodeled. Clean, comfortable, and quiet. However, the best feature was definitely its location on Westport...just a short walk down to […] some of KC's best eateries and nightlife! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great hotel and location"
Very clean and comfortable room. They have remodeled recently and the hotel looks great, although there a few small details to be fixed (our bathroom door was cracked all around the edges). The breakfast omelets were delicious! All the staff were helpful and courteous. The neighborhood was fun and lively, with shops, restaurants and nightlife all within […] walking distance. We will definitely be back and would recommend to friends! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Could have been a better trip :/"
I liked the renovations at the hotel. We were hoping for a theme room but ended up in the family friendly Penguin room. We would have preferred a room with a mini fridge and microwave over bunk beds. We didn't like the tiny bath vanity and the tub had no ledge to put your products or your foot if you prefer to shave in the shower. Loved the shuttle […] service, free cocktails and omelets, however my car was broken into and nearly stolen off their lot. Need more security in their lot! Since the hotel was fully booked for the weekend we were turned out with an unworn car. Stressful end to a romantic getaway! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"1st Timer to KCMO"
Loved the hotel location. The KC Theme rooms were pretty cool. This was a mother daughter trip and felt very safe . Downtown shopping was minutes away. Staff had everything waiting for us when we arrived and we were able to go straight to our room. This will be our hotel of choice next time we visit Kansas City!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Location, But damp"
Awesome location. Right near all the action. Room smelled of smoke. Tub in shower was damaged. Room was very damp. My socks felt wet after walking on carpet. Had to clean a very dirty Air Filter in the AC unit myself.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Way better than I expected"
I was in Kansas City to do some research at the National Archives. I picked the hotel because of the location and price. I was way better than I expected. Happy hour, decent breakfast, shuttle service, great room, in the historic Westport part of town. I walked around the neighborhood with out a care. The bars and restaurants were close and varied. "Awesomely surprised by this new hotel"
We weren't sure at first because the price was so low and it was right by downtown. I was surprised by how clean this hotel was and how nice the breakfast was. I loved it. Will definitely stay again!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

I've stayed at this hotel several times. This was the first time i've stayed here since Holiday Inn sold the building and it was rebranded as 816 Hotel. "Be flexible & keep a positive attitude"
A handful of rooms have been remodeled, but the rest show the age of the hotel. Dingy bathtubs, non-working bathroom fans, old mattresses & a musty stench make this place reminiscent of a cheap motel. "Very Nice Stay"
The room was clean, comfortable and quiet, cue to its upper-floor location (our friends on the 2nd floor were not happy with the noise). The breakfast had fresh fruit and what appeared to be home made yoghurt, very welcome additions to the standard breakfast fare, as well as custom omelets. The happy hour complimentary cocktails and the evening fresh-baked […] cookies were welcome, too. I can't say enough about the staff - very friendly and accommodating. Really a lovely stay. We booked our stay with the Hotel during their pre opening sales pitch. This is a great location for people who wish to bar hop in the Westport area of KC. Within walking distance of numerous bars and restaurants. This hotel is a glorified holiday inn express, but still very very nice. The check in was quick and easy and we were given the BBQ, perfect for KC. The room was large and well kept with everything you would need. The bed was comfortable with plenty of fluffy pillows. We had several of the free drinks during the happy hour in the lobby. We enjoyed the free breakfast of serve yourself pancakes, coffee and juice. Fresh made to order omelets were also available.
"Loved the 816 Hotel Concept and Staff"
09/13/14 LucindaVan Beautiful Colorado
We had a brief 1-night stay at the 816 Hotel. We had a great experience with the staff from front desk, to the bartender at the complimentary Happy Hour, and custom omelet prepared to order for breakfast. Location was excellent, close walking distance to fun bars and nice selection of restaurants. We loved the concept of the themed hotel to highlight the history of KC. We didn’t know what to expect about the rooms. Ours was an ordinary room, clean and with a comfortable bed. Breakfast was great with great coffee and the custom omelet was a great touch. We really like that they offer the best rate by booking direct and for returning guests. The only criticism was the bathroom, which was in significant need of maintenance and updating. Overall, we were very pleased with our experience though and would stay there again in a heartbeat – hoping to stay in one of the themed rooms in the future.
"Great Service and host"

This is the second time we have visited Hotel 816. All the personnel were very helpful with any questions or assistance we needed. The theme soccer room was very interesting, had a signed soccer jersey. We had an event downtown and the shuttle service was great. Breakfast and omelets, were the best and a nice variety. The bar tender fixed me a very good drink.
"Unique Experience in Kansas City"
09/11/14 Jane H Minneapolis, Minnesota
Traveling to Branson, we were looking for a place to stay overnight along the way. Although we usually frequent major hotel brands along the highway, we were attracted to the 816, by a promotion offered by a travel site. We were not disappointed -- the 816 offered a unique experience at a very good value. The hotel celebrates the history of Kansas City through its decor and "theme rooms", each highlighting a particular characteristic of KC culture. We were assigned to the "Kansas City Barbecue Society" room. Specially designed wallpaper featured photos of famous individuals enjoying the barbecue. We recognized Julia Child, Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels, and Guy Fieri, among others. The room looked newly remodeled, spacious and clean, and contained other "barbecue" artifacts as well. -- Great Fun! The halls in the corridors were lined with wall-papered murals featuring classic photos of Kansas City sites and events. The breakfast area was in the process of remodeling, but we enjoyed a hot, freshly prepared omelet and fresh fruit. All of the staff members we encountered were extremely gracious and welcoming. We really enjoyed our visit.
"Absolutely love the 816 Hotel"
09/11/14 Lori W Onalasak, WI
My husband and I traveled to Kansas City. Mo for a get away in September. We were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary. I saw the 816 on line and it looked great. We were not disappointed. We stayed in the TWA room. It was very clean and inviting. The manager of the 816 , Mr. Donald surprised us with a bottle of champagne! The 816 is in the great Westport neighborhood. There were lots of shops, restaurants and pubs nearby. The 816 has a courtesy shuttle that will take you/pick you up within a 4 mile radius. Curtis drove us several times and was always friendly and courteous. You can literally park your car and not drive as long as you are their guest. When we arrived Miss Sophia was very helpful. She gave us good ideas of how to spend our days sightseeing and arranged the shuttle for us. Melanie worked at the desk as well. She had several good tips for restaurants and even shuttled us when needed. The 816 has a wonderful breakfast. Brandy makes amazing omelets, and Nikki kept the breakfast room very tidy. Our last morning Brandy's Mom, Rita cooked. During the evening manager's reception Sarah and TJ were wonderful hostesses. I think that Mr. Donald should be very proud of his staff. He truly cares about your stay at 816 Hotel. My husband and I will definitely be return guests. I would love to bring my Dad and Mom. I know my Father would love the WW1 museum. We truly had a wonderful time in KC at the 816.

I enjoyed my stay at 816 Hotel. It is newly renovated and I thought the KC themes are interesting, the staff are super friendly, they are in Westport and the area near them is great for exploring by foot, they have free wi-fi and cocktails (which we always missed during our stay), and they have free breakfast with an omelet bar. The decor highlights Kansas City history, sights and culture -- Pendergast, Boulevard Brewing, Roasterie, the Plaza...these are just some of the things that 816 Hotel showcases. I really loved these at they helped point things out that I really should look more into. As mentioned, the staff are just so incredibly nice. From the front desk to the maintenance guys to housekeeping, everyone just seemed to emanate warmth and hospitality. They seemed to genuinely want to help and make sure that their guests feel welcome and at home. What I really loved about them is that they are in the Westport area. One of my favorite things to do when I am traveling is to explore the area by foot and the area was well-lit and felt very safe. They are near a lot of great watering holes and food establishments so that is also a plus. They are not even that far from The Plaza by foot! But what makes this hotel amazing in my opinion is the charming Ruby, who reigns over the omelet bar like a queen. She is funny, personable, and her omelets are what fueled me during my stay in KC. It felt like saying goodbye to a bosom friend when I left. Seriously, I can't wait to go back and introduce her to my daughter. She is that unforgettable! I highly recommend 816 Hotel and will stay here again when I go back to KC.
"Not as good as I hoped for"
09/07/14 Janet D
Stayed here for three days while working in the area. Arrived late, checkin prompt. I wasn't happy with the room, moved to the only other available one, went back to the first room. Neither of them were what I was expecting. Pictures on site deceptive. Bed comfortable, toiletries nice. Westport area great to be in. Many restaurants within waling distance. Staff very nice. Breakfast good, thought the pancake maker was a better offering instead of the usual waffle maker. Rooms could use some improvement.

Booked it because of the location being in Westport. Parking on a Friday night was a little tight because they share the lot with what seemed a popular bar but we did find a place. It was clean and very well remodeled older building with cool information about Kansas City history all over. Rooms were small by todays standards but comfortable and what you would expect in a more historic area. In room coffee but cheap brand. Breakfast area was tight and very busy. Waited a long time for an omlet and only discovered they had a pan of scrambled eggs when we picked up the omlet which we'd have probably had instead so breakfast area could be layed out better. Signature coffee ran out during breakfast on a Saturday morning so we left without refilling. It may have been an anomoly weekend but it seemed like a party hotel. There was activity, yelling and shreeking girls in the hallways from midnight until after 3AM so I recommend travel with ear plugs or at least be prepared. Seemed a lot of HS or Collage age kids at breakfast so I am willing to say there may have been some special activity and may not be the norm. I would still stay there again because for the location and price which make it an excellent value.
I stayed Wednesday through Friday received two free drinks during happy hour at the bar. TJ is the bartender and she makes some of the most delicious mixed drinks I've tried. The Westport area where the hotel is located has several delicious restaurants for all you foodies out there. Their shuttle service will also transport quests anywhere within about a 4 mile radius. The service beats walking or getting a cab, I did have to wait for awhile to get picked up but I didn't mind. The area is clean and safe. The gym is just down the street and the staff there was pleasant. Breakfast was enjoyable with the omelet bar and there is a breakfast place across the street called Baked which serves breakfast as well. I will definitely be returning to the 816.

This hotel certainly didn't live up to its website description. The location was fine, the price was reasonable, the room we were in was acceptably clean and very spacious. The placement of the furniture was odd; there was a very nice lounge chair/ottoman combo which would have been very comfy for watching television....except, the television was turned at an angle that made viewing difficult. We had booked a room for one night only; our travel companions were booked for three nights. Their room was very small compared to ours and had a distinct "damp" odor as well as spongy carpet. They were given our room the night after we left. This was the first time we've seen a pancake maker instead of the ubiquitous waffle maker at the "hot" breakfast---a nice touch. Another nice idea was the omelet station; sadly, it was severely understaffed. My husband waited about 30 minutes for his omelet. Several names were called out with no takers; more than one person gave up and went to the restaurant a few doors down. We took a chance based on the website; we'll give it a while to live up to its hype before we visit again.
